Organising Innovative Research: The Inner Life of University Departments (Issues in Higher Education)
Li Bennich-Björkman Manufacturer: Pergamon ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0080430724 |
Book Description
The major aim of this book is to contribute to the ongoing European debate on the future relationship between government and universities. The volume refutes the wide spread notion presently adopted by several European politicians and administrators, that the most efficient way to meet the threats posed by mass university education to excellence in research and teaching is through government supervision and control, and the introduction of short-term incentives of a monetary nature. Instead this study points to the necessity for the operational units strongly to safeguard and strengthen their own capacities for self-evaluation and willingness to change, mainly through emphasis on the question of academic leadership at the basic level. It also argues strongly for the beneficial effects of continuing the present European experiments with organizing graduate education in a way resembling the graduate-school model. In developing general policy arguments, introduced in the opening chapters and summed up in the concluding discussion, the book examines empirically the "cultures" of four innovative and three stagnant Swedish departments in the social sciences. A second aim of the book is thus to provide empirical insights into what, organizationally, signify innovative research establishments. The third, and final aim, is to contribute to the theoretical discussion on preconditions for social change and continuity, by focusing on factors enabling or obstructing these "micro-structures" to change.

Media Ethics and Accountability Systems
Claude-Jean Bertrand Manufacturer: Transaction Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1560004207 |
Book Description
Over the last few years, the O.J. Simpson case, then the Lewinsky-Clinton affair, and scores of minor scandals have dominated the U.S. press, often taking precedence over important domestic and international issues. Tabloidization of the news media, both here and abroad, proves that "the market" cannot insure media quality. For media to function well in a democracy, they must be free of both political and economic muzzling. Bertrand argues the only solution is to add self-regulation, or quality control, by professionals and public to market and state regulation. In this controversial volume, he defines a set of accountability systems-democratic, efficient, and harmless-to insure true freedom and quality of media. This brief, highly literate volume focuses on what is missing in the philosophical foundations of media ethics. Media Ethics and Accountability Systems zeroes in on the many nongovernmental methods of enforcing "quality control," and on the difficulty of getting the media microcosm to accept such accountability. Bertrand proposes rethinking existing "media accountability systems" and creation of new ones. He observes that existing systems are rooted in four basic approaches: training: education of citizens in media use incorporating ethics courses in journalistic education; evaluation: criticism (positive and negative) not only from politicians, consumerists, and intellectuals, but from media professionals themselves; monitoring: by independent, academic experts over extended periods of time; and feedback: giving ear to the various segments of media users and their needs and tastes, rather than sales and ratings.
Media Ethics will be of particular interest to academics in the fields of communication and journalism, as well as to the general reader with an interest in public issues and a civic concern for society.

Journalism ethics - that's an oxymoron - or is it?.......2001-04-05
Unfortunately, that view may resound today with many consumers of the news media. Recent polls show that respect for the news media in the United States ranked even lower in the public's esteem than did politicians.
I wish that Professor Claude-Jean Bertrand's book had been available then. Students and instructors would have benefited. The book, small in size, packs in original, practical principles. Ethical journalism , the book stresses, means that serving the public's needs must be the news media's foremost role. The name of the game--accountability.
What qualifies Professor Bertrand, a sociologist and a professor emeritus at the University of Paris, to offer principles to guide the news media in the United States as well as in the world's democracies. He has lived in the United States and has written extensively about American journalism reviews. He has been visiting professor and guest lecturers at several universities, among them Stanford University, Syracuse University, and the
University of Missouri.
