    Book Description

Paul Dale Bush has been an imaginative and important contributor to the neo-institutionalist economic literature in the United States for over three decades. This is the first of two volumes presenting a tribute to this highly influential scholar. The majority of Dale Bush's recent scholarly writings have addressed the clarification and refinement of the pragmatic instrumentalist model of inquiry. This book first reviews Dale Bush's main contributions to academic life and to neo-institutional scholarship. Internationally recognized contributors - Phillip Anthony O'Hara, Erkki Kilpinen, Geoffrey Hodgson, Kurt Dopfer, Warren J. Samuels, Edythe S. Miller, Ann L. Jennings and William Waller - then provide a penetrating analysis of the Veblen-based neo-institutionalist theoretical approach to inquiry and its reflection in social value theory. This book will be of great interest to postgraduate students and scholars in the field of institutional economics, political economy, history of economic thought, methodology and social value theory.

        Book Description

In recent years there has been an emerging interest in the process by which operational research is carried out in organisations. This has been driven by the rapid developments which have taken place in the discipline throughout the 1980s. During this time Operational Research (OR) has undergone a period of significant reappraisal and as a result a deeper understanding of OR and its use in an organisational setting has been gained. This book provides a broad historical context within which these recent developments can be evaluated and future change can be anticipated. Paul Keys brings together a collection of 19 readings drawn from the 1940s to the 1990s. Arranged in four chronologically ordered sections with introductory essays providing a thematic structure, this material acts as signpost to the major steps in the developments and understanding of OR as it is practiced. The book provides an opportunity for students who are not quantitatively oriented to appreciate the and strengths of the OR approach and will provide undergraduates and graduates with complementary reading to the standard techniques-based OR texts.

4 out of 5 stars Very Practical Approach.......2004-01-24

The phrase "Six Sigma" derives from assuming a Normal distribution of some random variable that you are measuring. This distribution has a standard deviation, sigma. Then, if you measure the area under the curve that is greater than 6*sigma from the mean, you get something like under 10^-6. So the idea is that if you make something with a property that can vary from item to item, you want to reduce the deviation so that all items within 6*sigma of the mean are acceptable. And thus, unacceptable items are less than one in a million.

Of course, if the distribution is not Normal, then this is not necessarily true. In this case, Six Sigma is used metaphorically. The basic idea is the same.

The Six Sigma approach has been widely publicised in recent years. Perhaps the best known proponent in the United States is Motorola, who claimed that they successfully applied it to their manufacturing operations. Especially those for cellphones and microprocessors.

Perhaps its greatest merit is that it stresses hard numerical criteria that are easily and economically measurable. So that you can conduct these measurements on a large subset of the items you are making. Or indeed perhaps on all the items.

                Book Description

Rivalry is an attempt to understand facets of entrepreneurial societies by integrating the economic analysis with historical, political and psychological considerations, customarily shunned by economists. The author argues that decisions to make new business ventures, and readiness to take risks are both related to concepts of ranking hierarchies on local, national or international levels. He then constructs a theory of business enterprise and of rivalry supported by evidence on entrepreneurship, innovation, advertising, all examined with their historical, political or organisational concerns. This notion of rivalry among businessmen is used to derive guidelines for anti-trust legislation. Instead of pricing, profitability, concentration ratios and other criteria used today to infer non-competitive behaviour, he suggests using a measure of a firm's relative rate of innovation to infer it. By extending the notion of rivalry to the political sphere, national and international, guidelines are derived to evaluate the performance of state-owned enterprises and to examine policies related to free trade.

4 out of 5 stars A really funny, entertaining read!.......1999-01-20

It's about time somebody wrote a book lampooning trade shows! I've been going to high-tech trade shows for years, and was thrilled to find some kindred (and extremely funny) spirits who could see through all of the hype to find the humor in these overblown events. This book is filled with wry observations and laughs. It's really more of a humor book than a traditional "how-to." It's also more of a take on the computer industry as a whole, with all of its huge egos and wacky marketing schemes. Therefore, although specific information on some shows may be dated, the essence of what makes these shows tick (and sometimes frustrate) remains true. The satire in this book is right on!A funny, entertaining read. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Might be useful for naive travelers paying their own way........1998-12-15

This book reads like the review of your hometown, where you know the reviewer has passing familiarity with the subject, but the information comes across as a pay-by-the-word exercise rather than a useful guide.

Much of this comes across as stating the obvious. Do you really need to pay to have someone tell you that if the phone line is long, go across the street and try another one; or sillier yet, go check the "restricted access" area of the hotel for a phone? Or that if you're carrying a lot of SWAG (i.e., stuff we all get) you might not want to walk back to your hotel because it might be awkward and your bag might break?

As to travel arrangements, is there really a big audience of attendees who are paying their own way and can't figure out just to call a travel agent and ask for the cheapest fare and leave it at that?

The "gonzo tours" were lame. Las Vegas, for instance. "Drive out to Red Rock Canyon". Any possibility of adding a little more descriptive information so someone would actually have a reason to check it out? The main tour consists mainly of trolling the boulevard in a pimp mobile. What about rating (or even mentioning!) the rides, for example, and maybe suggesting the best time to go for the shortest lines. Or mention why you might actually want to spring for expensive tickets to Cirque du Soleil. Or if you have a day off, one of the most spectacular places on earth, Zion N. P., is 3 1/2 hours away. And the largest (or one of the largest) roller coasters in the world is about a half hour away. The Las Vegas tours section looks like 5 minutes was spent on the web before writing it.

It seemed like every chapter I read left me waiting for real substance. For example, under the heading "Wear Comfortable Shoes", there isn't one helpful tip to elaborate. The authors should have stopped while they were ahead, i.e., after the heading. Maybe that was the point; it wasn't really written to be useful. It's really some guys' version of a humorous take on trade shows.

The other thing that really started to grate on me was the fact that they didn't even bother to use a spell checker or editor (apparently). A few examples: "PRESENTAION", "Freemont St." (It's FREMONT!), and "steady gate" (as opposed to steady gait).

In summary, you'd really do better with your own common sense or advice from a co-worker than you would spending your money on this mass of verbiage. "Hot tips" is really false advertising.

                  5 out of 5 stars A must for high-tech trade show visitors!.......1998-08-24

A wonderful, funny guide to those big technology shows that populate Las Vegas. If you're going to Comdex as a visitor, get this one!

This book isn't designed to help exhibitors get more out of their show, but exhibitors will learn ways to keep themselves entertained after the show closes.

While the book uses the title "Guerrilla", it's not part of the series of Guerrilla Marketing books by Jay Conrad Levinson.

Get the book and get ready to laugh!

5 out of 5 stars A wickedly funny and useful book for business travelers!.......1996-08-29

The Guerrilla Guide to High-Tech Trade Shows uproariously unmasks the world of high-tech industry conventions, while showing you how to get everything you want at a show with a minimum of hassle. It's packed with lacerating ovservations and outrageous tracks of the trades discovered the hard way -- through years of promotional dinners, complimentary hotel suites and easy press passes. This book shows in a very entertaining way how ancient Chinese warfare strategies still apply in the new China of today .

The stories described offer an excellent illustration of the often bizarre and difficult to grasp Chinese behavior patterns and realities of a very complex society and country in transition.

At the same time the reader is taught one major , indispensable ingredient for success and survival in China : a deep sense of humor !

                            Book Description

In this era of global competition, the demands of customers are growing, and the quest for quality has never been more urgent. Quality has evolved from a concept into a strategy for long-term viability. The third edition of Principles of Total Quality explains this strategy for both the service and manufacturing sectors. This edition addresses the theme of reliability against the backdrop of increasing litigation in the area of product performance. New chapters also introduce and provide a historical perspective for Six Sigma, and discuss practical applications of the concepts of service excellence within healthcare organizations. The book also expands its analysis of management of process quality, customer focus and satisfaction, organizing for TQM, control charts for variables, and quality function deployment.

This book is a college text, for sure, but it is easily read and understood without enrolling for the course. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting both an introduction and a useable reference to the subject of Quality. A better investment than spending almost as much for a trendy "fluff" book, of which there are many. Also, many of the other books on the subject tend to focus mostly in manufacturing settings. This book deals equally with the service sector as well. Particularly good case studies at the end of the book, treated in depth.

Balance of methods, cases, and even a little history thrown in. Keeps it from being too boring.

                                Book Description

Attempting to reveal the real causes of the 1929 stock market crash, Bierman refutes the popular belief that wild speculation had excessively driven up stock market prices and resulted in the crash. Although he acknowledges some prices of stocks such as utilities and banks were overprices, reasonable explanations exist for the level and increase of all other securities stock prices. Indeed, if stocks were overpriced in 1929, then they more even more overpriced in the current era of staggering growth in stock prices and investment in securities. The causes of the 1929 crash, Bierman argues, lie in an unfavorable decision by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities coupled with the popular practice known as debt leverage in the 1920s corporate and investment arena. This book extends Bierman's argument in an earlier book, The Great Myths of 1929 and the Lessons to Be Learned (Greenwood, 1991), in which he discussed and refuted seven myths about 1929 but could not explain the crash. He now believes he has a reasonable explanation. He also examines the actions of Charles E. Mitchell and Sam Insull and their subsequent unjust criminal prosecution after the crash of the 1929 stock market.

5 out of 5 stars Best Auction Introduction.......2004-03-27

This book is quite useful if you want and/or need an overall introduction to the Auction Process both in the Business field and in the private management of eBay auctions.
I used it for understanding how companies organize their e-procurement.In particular this book is among those few dealing with Covisint, which is a common auction platform for automotive brands.
It starts with very simple concepts and classifications of auctions and ends up with real examples. I would rather advise "The Auction-App" only for those who want to get in touch with B2B approach to auctions. It does really worth its price.

3 out of 5 stars Too basic but full of examples and references.......2003-05-25

This book is too basic if you're counting on it to earn big bucks. It does touch a few aspects of opening a online auction business - finding the right marketplace, marketing, etc. However, the lessons are too basic which I think most of us already knew it without reading this book.

The biggest benefit of this book is lots of examples & reference. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the book is case studies, resources/reference. So you're already know how to run online acution business but just lack of information, this is it. If not, better look somewhere else.

I only recommend this book to people who know about online auction business but just don't have time to collect information themselves. This is an easy solution.

5 out of 5 stars Increase Profits: Small or Large Companies.......2002-07-26

Harden does it again. Mr. Harden, the Internet Marketing expert and author of "Net Results" and "Net Results 2" (books that set the standard for setting up company web sites and THE primer of Internet Marketing), has focused on the niche, but growing, Internet segment of Auctions. Whether you're a "consumer buyer," the owner of a "Mom & Pop" store (who might sell trading cards, comics or antiques) or the Sales executive of a manufacturing company who needs to move excess inventory, everyone can learn how to make auctions build revenue and increase the customer base for their enterprise. With the Internet, and company, large or small, can gain worldwide attention (and business) through advertising their products via various auction sites. From one-time customers those companies can now develop on-going relationships and referrals. Thinking of starting your own home-based business? Look at what you can advertise and sell via Internet auction sites. Did I mention the minimal cost of auctions "advertising" vs. the more traditional forms of newspaper ads, yellow pages, direct or co-op mail, etc.? Harden leaves nothing out. Auctions provide one of the most cost-effective marketing media available; lower cost marketing = greater profits. As a Vice President of a sizable regional company, I'm glad I've got "The Auction-App" on my "refer to again and again" book shelf.

This is one in a series of several dozen volumes which comprise the "Harvard Business Review Paperback Series." Each offers direct, convenient, and inexpensive access to the best thinking on the given subject in articles originally published by the Harvard Business School Review. I strongly recommend all of the volumes in the series. The individual titles are listed at this Web site: www.hbsp.harvard.edu. The authors of various articles are among the world's most highly regarding experts on the given subject. Each volume has been carefully edited. Supplementary commentaries are also provided in most of the volumes, as is an "About the Contributors" section which usually includes suggestions of other sources which some readers may wish to explore.

In this volume, there are eight in-depth interviews of current or former CEOs: Jacques Nasser (Ford Motor Company) on "Driving Change"; Roger Sant and Dennis Bakke (AES) on "Organizing for Empowerment"; John Browne (British Petroleum) on "Unleashing the Power of Learning"; Michael Dell (Dell Computer) on "The Power of Virtual Integration"; Sir Colin Marshall (British Airways) on "Competing on Customer Service"; John Sawhill (the Nature Conservatory) on "Surviving Success"; Krister Ahlstrom (The Ahlstrom Corporation) on "Governing the Family-Owned Enterprise"; and Michael Eisner (The Walt Disney Company) on "Common Sense and Conflict."

No brief commentary such as this can do full justice to the rigor and substance of the interviews provided. It remains for each reader to examine the list to identify those subjects which are of greatest interest to her or him. My own opinion is that all of the interviews are first-rate. For me, one of this volume's greatest benefits is derived from following the thought processes of each interviewee. Although no doubt edited to some extent, the responses never seem "canned." Having observed most of these executives in person or being interviewed on television, I can attest to the natural flow of the conversations. This is how the subjects think. This is how they express themselves. It should be noted that the interviews are conducted by Suzy Wetlaufer, Steven E. Prokesch, Alice Howard or Joan Magretta. (The interview of Sawhill was co-conducted by Howard and Magretta.) Even those who already subscribe to the Harvard Business Review will greatly appreciate this series because each volume gathers together separate but related articles (previously published in the HBR) on the same general subject. The cost of each volume in the series is relatively modest; the value provided is substantial.
