      Book Description

Since the initial publication of this important text, the research support for balanced literacy instruction has continued to grow. This revised and updated second edition incorporates findings from reports by the National Reading Panel and the National Research Council, as well as ongoing research by the author and others. Interjecting a voice of reason into ongoing debates on the "one best way" to teach reading, Michael Pressley demonstrates how effective reading instruction combines aspects of both skills-emphasis and whole language approaches. Topics covered include the various components of both whole language and skills instruction, how the balanced approach is applied in real classrooms, and motivational issues. The second edition has been augmented with new material on phonemic awareness, comprehension problems, decoding and comprehension, vocabulary instruction, development of word knowledge, and "flooding" the classroom with motivation. It also features a new discussion of the place of Reading Recovery within balanced instruction, including an in-depth case study. Ideal for teacher educators and graduate students, reading specialists, staff developers, in-service professionals, and policymakers, the book also serves as a text in reading methods and materials courses.

                Book Description

How can you make wise decisions about your company and your personal future when you have no idea where the economy is headed?
The answer is, you can’t. But you can learn how to accurately predict turns in the economy so that you can see the road ahead. And
BEATING THE BUSINESS CYCLE shows you how.

In BEATING THE BUSINESS CYCLE, Lakshman Achuthan and Anirvan Banerji, the directors of the renowned Economic Cycle Research Institute (ECRI) show how anyone can predict and profit from the inevitable booms and busts of the economy.

Why should we believe them? Because while so many economists and financial gurus have failed to predict recessions in the past, ECRI’s forecasts are known for being uncannily accurate. The institute successfully predicted the U.S. recession of 2001 many months before the economists did; the 1990 recession and later recovery; and most recently, the weak U.S. recovery in 2002. ECRI is in constant demand by corporate America and the media. It is the “secret weapon” of companies from Disney to DuPont, the major fund managers, and many central banks.

BEATING THE BUSINESS CYCLE is the first book to reveal how decision makers at all levels–managers, small business owners, and individuals–can see into the economy’s future when making key decisions. Should a large company search out new clients and build new factories or stores, or should it consider cost cutting and layoffs? Is it the right time for you to splurge on that luxury vacation or addition to your house, or would it be more prudent to cut back on big expenditures and save money for a rainy day?
Written in an easy-to-understand, accessible style, BEATING THE BUSINESS CYCLE reveals which of the hundreds of economic indicators to trust and which ones to trash. It will give you the tools and confidence you need to make the right decisions at the right times–even when the rest of the investing and business world would persuade you otherwise. Whether you are a corporate manager or the owner of a small business, whether you have your money invested in stocks or in your home, BEATING THE BUSINESS CYCLE will give you the edge you need to trump the competition and stay ahead of the crowd.

                Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars More commonplace than it is creative.......1999-04-10

While this book might be useful to stretch the minds of managers seeking alternate ways to "reach out to" customers and employees, the title makes it easy to mistake the book for a guide to INNOVATIVE business WRITING, which it clearly is NOT. It is also not a place to get on the path to creating communications that are really "outside the box." Many of the 399 ideas given are commonplace nowadays and as a reader I found myself getting irritated that I had to spend $14.95 to read about marketing gimmicks I have already been the recipient of many times. To summarize, I felt this book was dated...not particularly well laid-out... and the few illustrations/cartoons peppered throughout were often printed too small to understand easily. I plan to return this book.

From the supplier: An insurance agent should study available excess and surplus (E&S) business facilities and choose an efficient insurer with financial stability. Also, lines of communication should be established, and the agent should check available forms to make sure they include liability and certification issues. To determine whether prices are fare, the agent needs to have access to more than one facility unless the first provides multiple quotes.

                                    Book Description

Which kinds of growth lead to increased employment and which do not? This is one of the questions that this important volume attempts to answer. The book explores the complex relationships between innovation, growth and employment that are vital for both research into, and policy for, the creation of jobs.

Politicians claiming that more rapid growth would remedy unemployment do not usually specify what kind of growth is meant. Is it, for example, economic (GDP) or productivity growth? Growing concern over `jobless growth' requires both policymakers and researchers to make such distinctions, and to clarify their employment implications.

The authors initially address their theoretical approach to, and conceptualization of, innovation and employment, where the distinction between process and product innovations and between high-tech and low-tech goods and services are central. They go on to address the relationship between innovation and employment, using empirical material to analyze the effects that different kinds of innovations have upon job creation and destruction. Finally, the volume summarizes the findings and addresses conclusions as well as policy implications.

This book will be of great interest to those involved in research and policy in the fields of macroeconomics (economic growth and employment), industrial economics and innovation.

4 out of 5 stars Good follow on book to IT Management.......2007-01-12

This book has a lot of material to cover. Also has examples of MS Project.

Not a lot of diagrams to go on-but it is still worth the price.
