            Book Description

The control and organisation of the flow of goods in the supply chain is of vital importance to industry and commerce, including manufacturing industrial enterprises, where the timely and efficient delivery of their output at an economic cost is of great concern. This book considers the out-bound supply chain and the associated out-bound logistics ie the flow of goods from the point of production or manufacture to the point of consumption. In doing so, it has to cover a range of management topics and techniques, including measures of performance, order management and forecasting, stock management and management of the supply chain.

Written in clear and jargon-free language, this book, whilst intended primarily students of engineering and manufacturing, at 3rd year undergraduate and postgraduate level, would also be of interest to logistics and operations management students. Typical examination questions are included.

5 out of 5 stars Outdated?- Hardly! Pure Brilliance!.......2002-06-16

This book had everything I was looking for. Moriarty and Klassen are simply geniuses- by laying out the facts and standards so easily. For years, I've been leading my company with the outdated forms of commonly accepted e-commerce procedures. Moriarty and Klassen opened my eyes to fresh and logical ways that I had never thought of. As for Sculley and Woods, with their B2B Exchanges & Evolving E Markets titles, those were horrid. I repeatedly asked myself, "Why am I reading this?" But then Power Play grabbed my attention. Frankly with the PTRW having its standards as they are, it's hard to believe that someone would be motivated to write such a great book. I happened to get my paws on a limited-edition, autographed copy; I can only imagine what it will be worth in a couple of years.

5 out of 5 stars A solid view of the future.......2001-11-20

I have been disappointed in the past because everything written about the internet is based on exceptions or breakthroughs or "killer apps". This book presents a solid reasoned view of the future and how internet-enabled commerce will be conducted. Perhaps the authors' best insight is that these technologies *must* be internalized by companies if we are going to enjoy the benefits. And the problems there have nothing to do with technology--it's all people problems, or training, or the way we do things.

I really believe that technology is not the issue, but how well people can use the information that internet-enabled systems and processes put in front of them. This book addresses how to deal with those kinds of problems very well, too.

Finally, it's an interesting book to read. I'm used to business books petering out after 15 pages, when the ghostwriter takes over. This book has a consistent and well-crafted message.

5 out of 5 stars Very clear and relevant!.......2001-11-19

I think this book is very well written and relevant for a person like me who is responsible to develop strategies implementing internet in our company. Our problems and needs are different than the problems and needs of the internet dot-com companies and this book is written to help us. There is so much written today in magazines and books that is unnecessary details that are not strategically important that it is excellent to read this book which emphasizes the structure and reasoning for investments in internet. It is also very interesting to read about the full range of opportunities these net markets can bring. We have implemented most purchasing functions, but are only at the start of other applications such as product designing and package designing.

5 out of 5 stars Happy to be back.......2001-11-19

I love this book. I went back to a"Power Play" employer after an 18 month dotcom holiday, and this book hits it right on the head. We like to think of ourselves as pretty advanced, but the way the authors think about how the big, established companies are going to internalise internet-based technologies is spot on. It's not as exciting as my earlier job, but it's also not as wierd and paranoid, either--and it's nice to have 24 months as a medium term horizon rather than 24 hours. And the best thing is that now I'm moving hundreds of millions of dollars of transactions rather than millions (or thousands...)--and even though our P/E is "only" 20, the stock price value is still a big deal. In addition to all the content and structure these guys put together, what I love is how they talk about the internet--it's exactly the way I have to talk about it so that the top guys in my company understand what we're trying to do. It may take us three years, but I know we'll get there. I'm going to go back and read it again.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Insight Into Net Markets.......2001-11-15

Mike Moriarty and Bruce Klassen met - and exceeded - every expectation I had for this book. It's must-have reading for anyone looking to leverage value from the supply chain and streamline business processes. Particularly insightful were the chapters on creating stickiness with content and setting the global standard for standards.

              Book Description

Israel Kirzner is the foremost proponent of the modern Austrian theory of the market process. Although this theory concurs with many of the major policy implications of neo-classical economics, it sharply diverges from much of the substance and methodology of neo-classicism.

Austrian economists criticize the "tight equilibrium" approach of the mainstream and emphasize the crucial role of ignorance, uncertainty, and the passage of time. By introducing the role of the entrepreneur and of entrepreneurial discovery--an innovation in which Kirzner's earlier work has played a central role--modern Austrian economists believe that it is possible to steer a middle course between those who believe the world to be always in full coordination, and those who believe it has no important coordinating properties at all.

The Meaning of Market Process offers new substantive insights in support of this Austrian position, and new historical interpretations of how the ideas of the modern Austrians have emerged. The essays focus particularly on the pioneering work of Carl Menger, the contributions of von Mises and Hayek, and the famous interwar socialist calculation debate--issues which are especially relevant at a time when the economic failures of socialism have become widely recognized.

                Book Description

For twenty years, Israel Kirzner has been one of the foremost proponents of the modern Austrian economics in the United States. In The Meaning of the Market Process, he extends his analysis of the implications of the Austrian approach while comparing it to both neoclassical and radical subjectivist approaches. This theory, while concurring with many of the major policy implications of neo-classical economics, sharply dissents from much of the substance and methodology of neo-classicism. Emphasising the crucial role of ignorance, uncertainty, and the passage of time, Austrian economists criticize the `tight equilibrium' approach of the mainstream. Yet the Austrians refuse to conclude that the major conclusions of economics are to be rejected. By introducing the role of the entrepreneur and of entrepreneurial discovery (an innovation in which the author's earlier work has played a central role), modern Austrian economists believe it possible to steer a middle course between those who believe the world tobe at all time

This is a great resource. It's a great collection of exercises that draw upon a wide variety of arts modalities. Each exercise is described in enough detail to be able to easily implement them.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight and fascinating exercises.......2007-09-21

This book was one of the first and best to explore using arts-based techniques and processes to address organizational issues. The introduction is a superb distillation of some of the reasons why the arts work in the business context and the exercises themselves are generally well thought-out and easy to use - they should be, as they come from some of the leading practitioners in this ever-growing field. The book may be expensive, but it is worth every cent for any trainer or facilitator who wants to take a more creative approach to their work.

                      Book Description

This book analyses recent developments in international sustainable development law (ISDL), a field emerging at the intersection between international economic, environmental, and social law. Hundreds of new bi-lateral, regional, and global treaties have been negotiated in the areas of trade, environment, and development over the past two decades, yet most of them face profound problems in implementation. At the same time, disputes over human rights, environmental protection, and economic development are increasingly common. This book provides a long-awaited coherent approach which can address conflicts and overlaps between international economic, environmental, and social law. It surveys the international law related to sustainable development; discussing proposed principles, offering case studies that examine innovative aspects of key international instruments, and reflecting on future legal research agendas. Part I (Foundations) surveys the origins of the concept of sustainable development, identifying and discussing the foundations of its legal aspects. It also analyses the main results of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. Part II (Principles) examines the emerging principles of international law related to sustainable development, based on the International Law Association's New Delhi Declaration. Part III (Practices) provides case studies of legal instruments and regimes that integrate economic, social, and environmental aspects, illustrating the challenges and innovative methodologies of recent years. Part IV (Prospects) proposes cutting-edge research agendas in six priority areas of intersection between international social, economic, and environmental law, and examines the new international architecture of sustainable development governance in light of the outcomes of the 2002 World Summit for Sustainable Development. Sustainable Development Law is a guide, resource, and reference for scholars, policy-makers, negotiators, and practitioners, and provides students of social, economic, and environmental law with a coherent introduction to the newly emerging law of international sustainable development.

                            Book Description

Designed for use in undergraduate and graduate courses in Information/Library Science, Telecom, Business, Engineering and Medical Infomatics programs, this textbook offers nonexperts an accessible, thoughtful introduction to the applications and infrastructure in networked computing, providing information to make the right technological and organizational decisions in working with developers to design or acquire effective computing solutions.

Understanding the rich conjunction of networking and computing is essential for anyone involved in the formulation and implementation of new application ideas, whether in business, education, or government. Most non-computer science students entering the IT profession today have not been adequately prepared to work with, let alone take advantage of the computing infrastructures they'll encounter in the real world. The only courses that currently discuss aspects of this environment in any detail are in Computer Science departments, and are at a level that is considerably too advanced for their needs and backgrounds. And these courses are not likely to cover the economic, societal, and governmental issues that are also important for them to understand.

This is probably the first book in computing that takes a top-down approach, starting with applications. The focus is on explaining core concepts and terminology, getting into technical detail only where necessary. Example and analogies from everyday life help students to better understand concepts such as object-oriented programming, data mining, encryption, firewalls, etc. which might otherwise seem intimidating. Peppered throughout are sidebars that contain anecdotes, more detailed explanations, and additional examples that give students a refreshing break from the running text.

                            * Takes a functional, top-down approach, moving from application opportunities to a forward-looking view of the possibilities and limitations of networking and computing technologies.
                            * Uses plain English to explain important networked computing terminology and concepts, such as security, middleware, and electronic payments.
                            * Offers frank and enlightening discussions of general application categories, hardware and software infrastructure, up-and-coming communication technologies, and policy issues--social, economic, and governmental--affecting the future of networked computing.

                            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction for Non-Technical professionals.......2000-06-01

The book is well and clearly written, does not presume any background knowledge, and is filled with analogies and illustrations that make fundamental computing concepts clear to the novice. Each chapter contains an excellent bibliography of additional (mostly technical) sources.

I purchased the book as a non-technical professional who is involved in the design of Internet applications and the adaptation of traditional business processes to the Internet. I wanted a broader appreciation for the technical issues involved in creating networked (especially Internet) applications in order to serve more effectively as a bridge between business unit managers and software engineers. I found the book to be an excellent point of departure from which to start deepeing my understanding of a wide variety of issues in application design.
