    Book Description

This is the first of two volumes celebrating Keynes's contribution to economics, and the development of post Keynesian economics in recent years. It reinstates the importance of Keynesian economics and its revival since the end of the 1980s, and the book's authoritative chapters are presented by an outstanding group of international contributors.

Divided into two parts, this volume concentrates on microeconomics and econometrics. In the first section on microeconomics, the contributors address issues such as the division and coordination of knowledge, innovation, equilibrium and welfare, as well as transactions costs, imperfect competition, trust, and the theory of the firm. The second part focuses on econometrics within a post Keynesian framework and addresses issues such as realism, the use of empirical evidence, and the case of conflict in wage and unemployment determination.

This book will be welcomed by post Keynesian economists, microeconomists and those interested in the development of econometrics.

If you are looking for the perfect stocking stuffer for your favorite teenager or "tween" this season, then this is it. I am currently a mentor for troubled girls at a local youth center in Baltimore and can't think of a better gift to share. There's no better feeling than helping someone discover their untapped potential, and giving them the wings to fly. Kudos to the author for helping to fulfill a critical unmet need!

If it wasn't for this book, I would be working in Starbucks, or worse, Texaco. "Applying to College: A Planning Guide" by Casey Watts lays it out clearly and ingeniously for someone planning to attend college. My parents didn't even have to intervene. I did it all by myself. Applying to UPenn couldn't have been easier, and I got in! There should be more useful books like this out there. Casey Watts should write another book on "How to get your Boss' job" or "Becoming a US President". More books like that would make a difference in this country. I highly recommend this book for anyone planning to apply to college or any other institution of higher education. She knows what she's talking about, and she knows it well.

Um, my mom bought this book for me because she tells me I have to go to college. She tells me I can't live at home like my uncles, who still live in their house and who are in their 40's.
Anyway, I got this book to get her off my back but, it has lots of cool stuff in it about applying to college and stuff like that. It tells you lots of helpful things you have to think about before applying to college so hopefully, I won't make a big mistake. All kids in HS should read a book like this so they know what they are doing, and it keeps your mom off your case.

After leaving the armed services, I did not plan on attending college. In fact, I never intended to go to college. The process seemed daunting. And, after what I had seen in my life through various tours in the Marines, I could not fathom how book-learning and course-work could be relevant to my life.

Truth be told . . . I was scared. Applying to college required organizational skills I simply did not have. So, rather than pursuing this challenge, I preferred to think of it as a non-option, a waste of time. Nonetheless, I found myself coaxing my friends to send away for brochures and applications. I experienced college vicariously through the smiles and comaraderie depicted in the pages of Beaver College, State University of Alabama, and Boomerton College. It was exciting and I got hooked.

Hooked with no where to go. No plan for how to tackle the task of a college application. No plan for how to make my dream a reality.

That's where Ms. Watts' book stepped in. A clerk at the local bookshop pointed me in the direction of books geared towards helping people like myself tackle the application process. He offered no recommendations, but Casey Watts' book caught my eye. A quick skim revealed this book to be a treasure trove of knowledge, a compendium of wisdom. Casey Watts is to the planning and organization industry what Martha Stewart is to home decorations and gourmet cooking . . . though, from what I know, Casey has never been, and hopefully never will be, incarcerated.

If the doors to opportunity ever seemed closed to you in your life, turn to Ms. Watts. She has the key.

5 out of 5 stars Demystifing the College Application Process.......2004-11-13

When my little sister was applying for college, I gave her this book. I certainly wish I had it when I did my college applications. Not only was the book informative, helpful, and easy to read, it was also fun and interesting. Casey Watts is a masterful writer, and the book reflects her witty and wise style. I would recommend buying it for anyone who is applying to college or knows someone who is!

5 out of 5 stars Great information for everyone!!!.......2005-06-15

This book is a great read! It lays out the rules for having credit cards and checking accounts that I wish I had when starting out with my personal finances. I finally found out how checks are used by banks and department stores. And I like the ways to protect myself from getting my personal information ripped off and my credit ruined. And the ways to get out of financial trouble if your in it are wonderful.

This book also has many ways to get free money in the form of grants for college and starting a business that I find useful. Many foundations and the government have a lot of money they give away every year. There is a lot of free money out there that I didn't even know about, like credit cards and special financing deals for cars and furniture.

I always thought that a budget was about counting pennies, but I was wrong. The way to create a budget in the book is easy and makes sense. And there is a lot of good information about easy investing for the future. I loved it!

        Book Description

For the past four years, a committee of professional interests representing industry, academia, consumers and governments has been meeting to develop a definitive standard to take Quality Systems into the 21st century. In July 1994 ISO 9000 was announced to the world. This is the ISO 9000 Family (9001/2/3) as it tends to be called. There is now an even greater demand from companies to gain formal accreditation — particularly since the standard has worldwide recognition. The Quality Systems Manual is a detailed and definitive guide to the installation and maintenance of an ISO 9001 Quality System within a company. It is an intensely practical guide, laid out to follow the exact format of the 20 clauses of ISO 9001. It explains in plain English exactly how they should be applied to your business. The official ISO 9001 paper provides only a slim seven-page statement of the basic requirements that have to be met by a Quality System; it supplies none of the required methodology. It tells you what but not how. The missing link between the rules and successful registration comes from knowing how to take the 20 clauses and apply them to everyday business situations. This is where The Quality Systems Manual is so valuable. It is relevant for every industry, whether manufacturing or service, and will be used by Quality Managers, and those assigned to implement and maintain this new standard. Because it is designed as a practical guide to enable companies to register, there is a special section called Preparing for Assessment which covers all the nuances needed to optimise the chance of success when being formally assessed. TickIT (ISO 9000-3), the equivalent standard for software development, is also examined in detail and shows precisely how it integrates with ISO 9001. It has been calculated that a third of the cost a company incurs in achieving registration is spent on fees for consultants to help explain the rules and prepare for assessment. For the cover price of The Quality Systems Manual you could buy yourself about one hour of a consultants time.

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but very expensive!.......2000-04-21

The book is a good logical guide to anyone guiding a company towards an ISO9000 certification. It assumes nothing on behalf of the reader. It's based around a practical example of a fictitious UK Company, and presents example documents, forms and many UK based references.

The section on TickIT (ISO9000-3) at just 23 pages is disappointingly small, given t he prominence in the title.

It makes a good framework for someone contemplating an ISO9000 certification, but be prepared to find supporting literature for the detail.

Watch out too! Once the ISO9000 version 2000 standard is published this may no longer be the most relevant book to buy.

          Book Description

The field of Strategic Management has explored a range of new questions regarding technical change, firm capabilities, and executive decision-making, producing insights into the development of firms and unfolding of competition over time. These insights point to the importance of industry context and technical change, but little research deals systematically with the interaction between such contingencies and strategic choice.

This volume explores the relationship between business strategy and the industry lifecycle competitive interaction. The contributors to this volume ask, "What kinds of firm capabilities are required to compete effectively in the various stages of the industry lifecycle?". Rather than focusing on generalized principles of interaction, they ask, "How do firms build these capabilities, and where to they come from?". Their answers expand our understanding of the relationships between industry evolution, technical change, and business strategy, as well as industry life cycle itself.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Easy to Follow!.......2001-04-11

The things that I found to be the most helpful in this package was the fact that it was very thorough and there were multiple examples for each section along with a wide range of topics dealing with everyday situations in the business world. This package helped me in understanding some of the key aspects in training and development such as self-assessments and proper ways to construct agendas. It also outlined a development plan for improving supervisory ability. The thing that I appreciated was that it is possible to use this program with managers, supervisors, or can be done with employees and supervisors. This book is very complete and could be very beneficial to any supervisor, manager, consultant, or employee if the program is used properly and taken seriously.

            4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-02-23

Definitely designed more like a textbook than a manifesto, this volume bills itself as the only supervisory training book you'll ever need to deal with today's issues and skills. Consultants Brad Humphrey and Jeff Stokes' punctuate their book with illustrative graphs, chapter wrap-up questions and lots of notes in highlighted bold type. Their tone of voice would fit well into many classrooms as well as corporate offices. This wide-ranging book covers the basics and offers very complicated productivity analysis, worker evaluation protocols and even an initial primer on how computer applications can help your productivity. For the manager or supervisor who's just testing the deep waters of management theory, we... recommend this fairly easy first step into the deep end. The authors suggest that an organization's supervisors should all read a chapter and then deal with the questions and exercises in a discussion group. That's the supervisory skill equivalent of "Okay, everybody in the pool!"

3 out of 5 stars Expecting Much More!.......2000-08-29

The book is not very stimulating to read, and you will find yourself putting it down because of lack of interest. The author hits on many key points throughout the book, but rarely excites or intrigues the reader with the subject matter of supervision. Many bullets, charts and information; but not very engaging!

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2000-07-06

The 21st Century Supervisor was inspirational. I know that sounds a bit over-the-top but I really liked what it had to say. It was more about developing supervisory skills which will help establish a synergistic work environment. It described the art and science of supervision as a worthwhile end in itself rather than a step up the corporate ladder.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging, original, comprehenive and articulate........2000-02-04

The 21st Century Supervisor: Nine Essential Skills For Frontline Leaders is designed to show anyone charged with a managerial or supervisor responsibility how best to carry out their obligations regardless of the size or nature of their company, corporation, agency, or organization. The 21st Century Supervisor shows how to improve skills of communication, coaching, business analysis, computers, project management, and resource management to meet goals, deal with senior leaders, subordinates, and even customers. The 21st Century Supervisor comprises the equivalent of a complete self-study training program in management for the new millennium.

If you are like a lot of managers that don't know how to achive the promise of TI's (the right information, at the right time, to the right place), then it is for you. Through some of the most important concepts of the business world like "strategic intent", "core competences" and "competitive forces", the authors show how to link the information with the business strategic and enable the companies to be informed. This book is one of the 90's classical (or should be:) strategic-business literature.
