      Book Description

Melnyk and Denzler have written a text that looks at operations management from a different perspective value. In this text, value is a dynamic theme that brings together the issues of performance, cost, competitive reactions, and customer expectations. By using a value-driven perspective, the authors enable students to view every activity in the operations management system in terms of its ability to enhance value. Students learn to evaluate: who current customers are and who new customers will be; what the customer wants; the degree of overlap between the current operations management system and the demands and expectations of customers; how to structure the OM system to deliver value; and, finally, how to measure performance.

5 out of 5 stars Compleat Guide: How Firms Make & Provide Goods and Services.......2000-05-24

Studying for APICS CIRM (Certification in Integrated Resource Management), I have accumulated a shelf full of books about enterprise management. "Operations Management: A Value-Driven Approach" rises above all the others. It is large book, almost 1000 pages. It covers all the operations management bases (and all the acronyms), including just-in-time, total quality, demand and supply chain, inventory and materials including MRP and MRPII, planning and scheduling, and so forth. It is a well organized and clearly written textbook, with good examples and problems throughout.

The best, however, is this book's point of view: Delivering VALUE to customers and stakeholders is the raison d'etre for the enterprise. If it doesn't do this well - compared to customer expectations and the competition - it won't survive. Moreover, delivering value is dynamic. The enterprise must constantly improve and its processes, products and services, to respond to the constantly changing needs of its customers. This book brilliantly applies this value-delivery critera throughout, putting techniques and frameworks such as JIT and TQM in proper perspective. Published in 1996, this book is becoming a bit dated in this age of the World Wide Web and virtual marketplaces. (A suggestion: revise and expand the book to cover e-Commerce, including business-to-consumer and business-to-business, to maintain, in my opinion, it solid 5-star rating.) Still, "Operations Management" does a good job anticipating new technologies and marketplaces, and the fact that the enterprise must constantly respond to these changes.

This book is a classic. It deserves to be read by every serious student - and every practicing manager - of operations.

        Book Description

The scope of what we call operations management has expanded and diversified in the last 15 years. This growth has affected not only what is covered, but also how it is covered, and how this material is delivered to students. Value-Driven Operations Management is an innovative, modular text that presents an alternative designed to meet the challenge posed by professors of operations management who have voiced the need for an expansive, easily updated, customize-able treatment of operations management content. This "ground-breaking" modular text allows instructors to take total advantage of the many diverse approaches to teaching operations management in the new millennium. This is accomplished by offering modules covering both traditional and emerging topics in operations management, along with an introductory group of modules defining the theme of “value” that serves as a unifying framework for the series. A selection of frequently used quantitative “tools" rounds out the series, offering a complete course solution for virtually any operations management course. The modules are customized via an innovative web-based tool and printed on-demand.

                        Book Description

At one time America's silk industry was the largest in the world. Silk was late to be industrialized, well after cotton and wool. Nonetheless, nineteenth-century American entrepreneurs rapidly built a silk industry with levels of production once unimaginable.

American Silk, 1830-1930 traces the evolution of the American silk industry through three compelling and very different case studies: the Nonotuck Silk Company of Northampton, Massachusetts; the Haskell Silk Company of Westbrook, Maine; and the Mallinson Silk Company of New York and Pennsylvania. The mills specialized in different products, from sewing-machine twist and embroidery threads to mass-produced plain silks and high fashion fabrics.

The case studies span the development of the U.S. silk industry from its beginnings in the 1830s to its decline in the 1930s. Starting in the 1920s with the growth of rayon, the first of the synthetic imitators, the market share for silk shrank, and silk gradually returned to being a luxury at the top of the hierarchy of fabrics. But, for a time, American technological innovations and entrepreneurs succeeded in bringing the pleasure and aesthetic of silk within the reach of more people than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars American Silk - New Family History.......2007-07-25

I went right to the middle section of this book to read about The Haskell Silk Mills in Westbrook, Maine. Why? Because my Great Grandfather Edwin Haskell was the founder. Excellent research by the author and her obvious love of the subject matter gave us, the Haskell descendants, an incredible look at the success and subsequent failure of this local business. I learned much more about my forebears and the operation of the mills than I had picked up anecdotally all these many years. If you have an interest in the textile industry in New England or in fact, anywhere. This is a wonderful read about the days before the synthetics came to town.

Co-authored by a former costume curator, a professor of math and science history, and a costume curator, three top authors create a high-quality scholarly analysis of an industry in AMERICAN SILK 1830-1930: ENTREPRENEURS AND ARTIFACTS. At one time America's silk industry was the largest in the world, so even though it hasn't nearly the stature today, it's an essential piece of American and business history. Here three case studies of silk company production mills span the heyday of the silk industry era and cover the technological and social issues surrounding silk. A key college-level title for any holding serious about American and American business history.

                            Book Description

In this lively and readable book, the authors argue that in recent years far too much has been made of customer satisfaction, and that this has come at the expense of hard-edged consumerism. Whether or not "the customer is king," the first rule of business is to make money. Pragmatic and practical, the book destroys seven key myths about customer management that have gained almost folkloric status, and provides a step-by-step action plan for linking customer service with commercial goals.

This book offers a good alternative perspective on how to build and maintain a data warehouse. It covers more of the political aspects of the process and offers useful tips on many of the less talked about areas of data warehousing, like how to implement upgrades to your software tools. It also covers the business drivers for building a data warehousing in great detail.

This would be a good companion book to Kimball's Lifecycle Toolkit book. This book (and CD which is included) has several very useful checklists and templates as well. All in all, a good reference book for the data warehouse practitioner (consultant, project manager, architect, or analyst/programmer).
