4 out of 5 stars From the Author: This Book is Out of Print.......2007-02-28

Hi! Amazon won't remove this listing, so I'll just let readers know... the print version of this book is out of print and has been for years. It became outdated very quickly (many companies went out of business, changed their guidelines, changed contact info, etc.), so I decided to take it out of print. It would be of very limited use to anyone who found a copy of the print version. For now, I still sell it as an e-book through Absolute Write. It was last updated in 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Friendly, practical and very useful.......2003-02-21

"Sell The Fun Stuff" offers a practical, insightful and entertaining look at slogan writing. Written in a friendly style throughout, it provides a guide to getting started with this form of writing, from finding ideas and understanding the industry terminology, to actually submitting batches of queries to companies.

The inclusion of interviews with people already working in the industry, such as writers, illustrators, cartoonists and company presidents, is a nice touch and offers lots of interest. The market section itself is extremely lengthy and includes details of companies worldwide.

The book is perhaps most applicable to those new to slogan writing, rather than seasoned pro's, although it could prove useful to anyone wanting to expand their work to other countries.

As with any publication including market guidelines, it's inevitable they'll change from time to time, but with such comprehensive contact details to follow up, it's easy for readers to check up on the latest situation or get names of new editors. The author has clearly thought of this potential problem, as everyone who buys the publication also gets access to a special forum where new market updates etc are available.

Overall, it's a great read, written in a very accessible manner and is sure to prove useful - and be lucrative - for readers!

1 out of 5 stars Do your own research.......2003-01-22

The copyright on this book is 2002, but many entries have proven to be outdated or plainly incorrect. I purchased this book with the intent of adding to the companies I was already writing for. I sent out a little more than 3 dozen requests for guidelines and have so far received 6 Return to Senders for bad or outdated addresses. At least three companies have responded stating that they DO NOT WORK WITH FREELANCERS. This, with only about a 2/3 response so far.

There was also a bad address that I caught before mailing out the requests. Purchasing this book was a waste, further exacerbated by the postage blown on mailings to useless addresses. I suspect there is a reason the book was self-published.

If you're going to spend the money anyway, put it toward a copy of Writer's Market or Greetings magazine. Don't throw it away on this book.

5 out of 5 stars Anything By Glatzer is Golden!.......2002-12-21

Before Glatzer's work entered my world, I was a stay at home mom who felt like my professional soul had shriveled up and died. Call her Ms. Frankenstein, but I'M BACK, and better and happier than ever. I particularly enjoyed her e-workbook on freelance writing. I didn't want to write the next all-American novel, I just like writing about anything and everything, I wanted to be published, and make enough to pay the cable bill. She provides an amazing amount of mental springboards all in a casual and comforting writing voice that makes you think you're having coffee at Starbuck's with a buddy. What a great find! I'm published! Check out, "Waiting for You: An Heirloom Adoption Journal for My Future Child (ISBN: 0-9723942-0-6)," also available on Amazon.com!

5 out of 5 stars Must Read For Writers Of Greeting Cards And Other Fun Stuff.......2002-11-20

This book has become a regular reference for me. It is worth it's weight in gold with all the tips and especially for all of the contacts listed. It's written in an easy me to you format. You'll learn a lot from this book.

The 2001 National Energy Policy calls for continued reductions in energy intensity (energy consumption per dollar of gross economic output). This study was part of an effort to identify state-level factors that may contribute to efficient energy use nationwide. The authors examined changes in energy intensity in 48 states and in the states' energy-consuming sectors from 1977 through 1999. Some factors that may explain differences in states' energy intensity are energy prices, new construction, capacity utilization, population, climate, tech innovations, and government energy policies.

In his book Cartin covers an amazing amount of ground, in depth and easily read. He provides a lot of graphs and figures, which I like for explaining concepts. Cartin is also a big fan of Control Charts and sigma, which is often given just equal treatment with the other tools in many other books, but as any practictioner knows, is the tool most often used for quality process control.

There are some new elements added from the earlier version (TQM in title), but substantively this is the same book. Good thing, the original book was a classic. I still refer to my copy often. I read a friend's copy of this newer version and decided that the older one was still 99% relevant. However, if you don't own the earlier version, buy this one. It will provide value longer than that car you're driving.

3 out of 5 stars Review of Standardization Essentials.......2001-09-28

Standardization Essentials, Principles and Practice, Steven M. Spivak and F. Cecil Brenner, published by Marcel Dekker, Inc. New York, NY

Review by Ken Krechmer, Technical Editor, Communications Standards Review

Standardization Essentials is an introductory text on the development (standardization) and use of standards that define similarity. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, repetitive manufacturing processes have been used to economically produce similar things. The standards associated with such manufacture may be termed similarity standards. This book clearly develops and explains the economic advantages of creating and using similarity standards to increase the size of served markets and decrease the per unit cost of manufacture. Although the focus of this book is on North American standardization, there is considerable discussion of the value and importance of world wide standardized manufacturing and the international standardization organizations associated with similarity standards. The important issues of conformity assessment (testing to insure conformance with similarity standards), ISO 9000 (quality management system) and ISO 14000 (environmental management system) standards are addressed. There is a good introductory chapter on both ISO standards series, and an excellent contributed chapter on implementing ISO 9000 in a medium size chemical company.

More than half the book is devoted to 18 independent articles (some previously published), 15 from different people with broad experience in the standardization industry and three from the authors. These articles offer a wide view of current aspects of standardization and are quite interesting to read. These articles range over different manufacturing fields: air conditioning, tires, information technology, automotive and chemicals; they address standardization from multiple vantage points: consortia, US Department of Defense, consumer product safety, developing countries, laboratory accreditation, trade barriers and product procurement. Some of the articles are very descriptive and all are helpful to understand the different views of similarity standards and standardization.

Standardization Essentials concludes with a copy of a US Government document: Office of Management and Budget revised Circular A-119 (1998) on the federal use and development of voluntary standards. Considering that such documents are available over the Internet, it is not clear why the authors chose to include it. The book offers a listing of some of the more significant formal standardization and related organizations in North America and some regional and international standardization and related organizations. But only names are provided. no contact information. Considering how rapidly most standardization committees are moving onto the Internet, the lack of web addresses and pointers is quite surprising and reduces the value of the book as a starting point for further study.

In summary, Standardization Essentials only partially fulfills the promise of its title, offering a view (although a good one) of just similarity standards. It does not address unit of measure standards and the related metrology (e.g., calibration) issues, and addresses only slightly compatibility standards and the related communications issues.

          Book Description

This new work takes quality principles and practices in higher education beyond theory by providing practical examples of what happens when these principles are applied. Freed and Klugman conducted an in-depth study of 10 quality-oriented colleges and universities. The administrators, staff members, and faculty members of these institutions candidly share their successes and failures in this book. The authors address the internal and external forces that are driving change and describe the development and implementation of quality systems that will meet the challenges of today's competitive academic environment. They also discuss the barriers to implementing quality principles as well as ways to remove them.

This is an admirable text, which covers every aspect of planning and implementing a successful exit from a privately owned business. It contains flow charts, check lists and technical appendices that cover tax, valuation, a detailed consideration of family succession issues, public float, franchising and other possiblities. It is written clearly and directly, with well set out guidance to all technical issues.
It is written in relation to UK tax and company law and readers in other countries will need to relate the advice to their own laws.

The failure of centrally planned socialism and the serious problems arising with the capitalist system requires a middle way between both doctrines. In this book it is argued that a synthesis of Classical and Keynesian economic theory provides the basis for this intermediate system. A monetary production economy is primarily considered. The author sets up a system of linking political economy with other social sciences, i.e. sociology, law and politics in the traditional sense, thus establishing the unity of the social sciences.

This could have been an excellent book if Bortis(B)had relied on the three major books Keynes wrote-A Treatise on Probability(TP)in 1921,A Treatise on Money in 1930,and the General Theory(GT) in 1936.Unfortunately,B relies far too heavily on the error filled work of Carabelli(1988),Fitzgibbons(1988),and O'Donnell(1989).This results in B arriving at three fundamentally flawed conclusions. The first is that Keynes did not have a general theory that was supported by a specific mathematical model and microeconomic analysis.Instead,Keynes had a vision about a just society based on his moral and ethical views. This "vision" also had extensive connections with Keynes's social, political, institutional, educational and global concerns. The "general theory"is primarily a book that seeks to convince the reader of the necessity of implementing Keynes's vision,a vision, however ,that Keynes himself could not support on the battlefield of technical and analytic competence because Keynes's mathematics was rusty. Thus, Keynes was unable to present a formal model of his theory in economic terms. The main conclusion is that, from an economic standpoint,Keynes's "theory" is very undeveloped and unclear. It needs to be rewritten and updated.Contrary to B,the mathematical model of the GT can be found in chapters 10,20 and 21 of the GT.Keynes then compares his mathematical model with the mathematical model of Pigou in the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT.Chapter 3 provides a brief introduction by Keynes to these later chapters.Second, the three authors that B relies on,listed above ,base their understanding of Keynes's position on the quantitative measurement of probabilities on a misreading of CHAPTER 3 of the TP, combined with the severe misinterpretation of Frank Ramsey in two book reviews published in 1922 and 1926,respectively.Ramsey totally misconstrued the meaning Keynes gave to the terms "nonnumerical" and"nonmeasurable".Keynes's definition ,given in chapter 15 of the TP,IS THAT TWO NUMERALS,NOT ONE(i.e.,nonnumerical means not by one numeral),ARE REQUIRED TO SPECIFY THE PROBABILITY RELATION in general.Keynesian probabilities are primarily intervals(set theoretic)with a lower bound and an upper bound. The third problem is that B ,again, misconstrues Keynes's views on the applicability of mathematical modeling in economics in general by relying on the unsupported claims and speculations of Carabelli,O'Donnell and Fitzgibbons, based, again, on their severe misreading of chapter 3 of the TP and omission of the crucial chapters of the TP,chapters 15 and 17.The view that Keynes did not really understand microeconomics or know how to provide a mathematical model of his theory or provide a general theory of macroeconomics, etc., are canards which are the result of the failure to read what Keynes actually wrote.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Guide to Dreamweaver.......2000-11-30

I have wanted to learn about Dreamweaver for a while because I've produced Web Sites using other programs. This book proved to be a readable introduction to the program. Even when I wasn't on a computer, I could understand what the authors were describing. This book will sit on a shelf near my computer so that I can use it later to reference anything from importing different kinds of files to creating layers in Dreamweaver.

Not only after purchasing this and another frontpage book and toying with the program, have I discovered, not to go with frontpage at all, rather use Dreamweaver for webpage design. If you still wish to use frontpage DO NOT PURCHASE THIS ONE!! I went through 5 frontpage manuals, and out of the five this was the worst!!

5 out of 5 stars Yo this is hella tight.......2001-01-22

This book is bangin'. Yo, my girl and I was on tha outs- you know? My uncle Jimmy was like "Stupid, why don't you make her a web thing that says 'Girl, you know you're hella fly. Come back baby.'" So i was all "Hell yeah." He gave some book, and I made this page that was like tiiiiiiight. She pretty much melted and I was all "Ahhh yeah girl, who's hella dope." And she was all "Yous is Leroy." And I was all like "Hell Yeah."

5 out of 5 stars This is a handy book to have.......2000-12-02

I've never done much with webpages until recently and this book has come in handy. Even if you dont like or use frontpage it covers lots of handy things like how to get search engines to find you and to make a user friendly and consistant webpage. Whats nice is that this book explains all the stuff about making a webpage like tables, forms, image positioning, and all the little things that make good pages that are a pain to work with unless you learn how to use a program like frontpage.

The only drawback is that sometimes the author doesn't go into enough detail on some topics, but overall this book will get you going with your own website.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to building websites with FrontPage.......2000-11-04

The Effective Executive's Guide to FrontPage Web Sites starts from scratch. If you want a good reference book with a guide to building a web site within it, this will work for you. The book includes information on everything from a description of how the internet works, to choosing a domain name, to adding interactivity to your website. The only thing I would have liked more of, was more specific information on how to do different formatting by hand within my website, maybe an appendix with some of the basic html tags.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book for the Experienced Internet User or the Newbie.......2000-10-30

This is a very good book for anyone wanting to develop their own web site, particularly the person with little Internet experience. Once I got to the essence of the book, using the Front Page software, I found it to be easily understood and logical. However, this "meat" was preceded by a lot of information that I didn't really need. If you are an experienced internet user, you may wish to scan through the first 1/3 of the book and start indepth study after that. What you will find then is well worth the wait.

                                  Book Description

There has been a phenomenal growth in autonomous business services, fuelled largely by the internet and e-business. New business architectures are emerging, in which an enterprise is configured as a dynamic network of components providing business services to one another. This is component-based business - "plug-and-play" applied not to hardware and software, but to business relationships. Component-Based Business constitutes a radical challenge to traditional notions of strategy, planning, requirements, quality and change, and tries to help you improve how you think through the practical difficulties and opportunities of the component-based business. As this is a rapidly developing field, more up-to-date and detailed examples can be found on the website associated with this book: http://www.component-based-business.com, which also contains open forums in which your questions can be discussed. "In this work so far, Richard challenges conventional thinking with a sometimes breathtaking series of lateral thoughts that are essential reading for the component architect, designer and their customer. Strongly recommended."

4 out of 5 stars Should you buy this book?.......2001-11-30

By no means dry, the book has a colorful way of exploring topics and then moving on before they have a chance to settle. I suppose this is the author's style and as a consultant one should be good at asking questions and most importantly asking the right ones. In many ways this is the books greatest strength as the author draws on real life examples and then poses questions for further thought. However, the open-ended approach to this all is IMHO the books biggest weakness as the author ends up asking more questions then he seems able to answer. He explains in the afterward that the book is a result of many disjointed notes and their eventual refinement which makes sense because I found no closure upon completing the last chapter. I asked myself what was the point of the book and realized it is what it is: a survey of business and IT, ala Stewart Brand, Gregory Bateson (two highly respected cyberneticists) and others with the resultant hodgepodge of systems theory.

In short I would not recommend this book for people looking for a practical hands-on approach to their business and IT. However, I would recommend it for anyone who likes "philosophising" about business and IT systems as the author has a very good knack at making the mundane exciting and vivid. Bringing software maintenance to the same calibre as development (he argues effectively rarely does pure development exist) was the most important thing I took away, though "great minds think alike" may be just another cliche.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating, lucid book that cuts through the hype.......2001-01-06

This is a must read for business people interested the competitive moves opened up by business components. It is irreverent, witty, fun. It deals with how to spot the components that will win, not this or that technology. It reclaims the streets from the corporate hype about who owns the market.
