This is an excellent introductory text for Operations Management(OM). I highly recommend this book if you are starting to learn OM.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, most practical book at college education.......2006-05-08

I am using this book for my business class. This book will teach you in-depth principles and skills on how you can manage business operations with a lot of mathmatical skills.

I feel that this book is great because it is very well organized and easy for readers to read. It has graphs and visual aids all over and CD materials for students to go through problems.

By learning this book, readers can not only gain the knowledge on business operation, but they can also have actual skills in operation management.

Buy this book if you are interested in this subject.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but mostly common sense.......2005-11-22

This is a good book, but it mostly presents common sense ideas. It's weak at explaining how you can truly measure the risk in your project. "Identify the risks, rank them in terms of likelihood, develop a contingency plan..." I think this is good advice, but I also believe that you can't manage what you can't measure. And this book doesn't provide you with an objective methodology to calculate risk. I was hoping to find a mathematical formula, or at least a model I could consistently apply across projects. Something like the equations presented in Excessive Project Schedule. Personally, if you want to buy a book on Risk Management, I'd recommend Rapid Development by Steve McConnell instead. There's a good chapter on Risk Management, and lots of valuable information about other project management related topics.

3 out of 5 stars Functional and simplistic..........2005-09-25

If you are new to the topic of Risk Analysis - this is an excellent beginners book. It covers the topic from several different angles, and especially for a Project Manager - it is a wonderful guide.

Personally, I found the book somewhat lacking in depth - overall. Where it tried to go deeper - the explanations were rather brief and not easy to follow.

There are several topics related to risk that could have been included or discussed in depth - such as what constitutes Failure, Accident, and why events get classified the way they do.

Lastly - in the foreword the book is referred to as a hand book. That is a stretch for sure. I would still recommend it for those engaged in managing Projects.

5 out of 5 stars Project managers book to keep.......2003-09-01

This is a good book about project risk and how to manage it and transform it into opportiunities.

3 out of 5 stars Good overview, but more recent publications available.......2003-02-27

The book provides a good, high level general overview. For more and better detail, I like Carl Pritchard's Risk Management Concepts and Guidance. Wideman's book is good, but it is from 1992 . . . Pritchard had the benefit of 9 more years of development of the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Well written introduction to probability and risk management.......2001-03-23

My mentor and colleague is fond of chiding me to "roll the dice". However, he is well versed in probability and risk management, so what he is really attempting to get me to do is to take *calculated* risks. I hate math, but knew that I had to overcome that if I wanted to take the next step in my ongoing professional development. I selected this book because it was short, and well written and illustrated.

This book is a bit light for experienced project managers who are well-versed in risk management, but I found it to be a perfect introduction to probability and risk management. It's structured in a logical order, with each chapter building on the other. It starts out with a general approach and definitions associated with risk management. It then covers how to identify risks, assess them using quantitative methods (no blindly rolling the dice here). Assessment is important. Risks are a part of our everyday life, and this part of the book shows you how to prioritize risks based on not only the impact, but the probability. Impact x probability is the basis for indexing and prioritizing risks. You are also shown how to either eliminate, mitigate or transfer the risk that you identify and assess.

Because I am a consultant and live in the world of statements of work and contracts I thought the brief section on dealing with risks in contracts was a highlight. I also liked the chapter on managing contingency allowances.

This is a valuable book for new project managers who need to get quickly acquainted with risk management, and for anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of probability and how to calculate and control risks. It is straightforward and gives you an awareness of what risks are and how to effectively manage them. My mentor would say, "a risk is an opportunity in disguise." I never appreciated or fully understood that until I read this book.

                Book Description

This collection of interdisciplinary essays is the first to investigate how images in the history of the natural and physical sciences have been used to shape the history of economic thought. It documents the extent to which scholars have drawn on physical and natural science to ground economic ideas and evaluate the role and importance of metaphors in the structure and content of economic thought. These range from Aristotle's discussion of the division of labor, to Marshall's evocation of population biology, to Hayek's dependence upon evolutionary concepts, and more recently to neoclassical economists' invocation of chaos theory.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Motivational Research.......2006-08-30

This is the centerpiece of MR, Dichter's method of discovering the motivations behind consumer behavior. A protege of Stekel, and therefore an indirect descendent of Freud, Dichter was another Austrian emigre who polished American consumerism with continental sophistication in the years following WWII.

The Strategy of Desire explores the anatomy and etiology of motivation as a whole, with interesting sub-studies on specific commercial issues. With the revival of MR under the guise of deep qual and "neuromarketing" and the meteoric careers of Rapaille and Zaltman, it is astonishing that so much of what Dichter explored as early as the late-1930s has come back into vogue.

That said, there is a good deal here that renders large chunks of his argument locked in the 1950s of Ike's baggily pleated golf trousers and soaring silliness of sweeping tailfins. Speaking of tailfins, don't deny yourself the pleasure of reading Dichter's 1939 Plymouth study; it appears as an appendix. There may be portions of the picture that have been brought into closer focus, but it was he who painted the landscape.

My professional interest in this material -- as principal and founder of Applied Iconology, Inc. -- lies in how one uses knowledge of emotional drivers to effect more pwerful brand, package and advertising design. Dichter was one of the very first to suggest the lineaments of a neuroscientifically-inspired design imagery. Depsite the enormous strides in research technologies and methodologies in the last decade alone, Ernest Dichter still has a good deal to teach us about a commonsensical approach to crafting meaningful, emotionally resonant messages for consumers!

                          Book Description

One of the fastest growing industries in America is the outsourcing of information systems, with huge and small companies alike employing contractors to manage their powerful information networks. But how effective is it for executives to hire outsourcers to administer the complicated information systems that are so critical to today's organizations? As Kathy M. Ripin and Leonard R. Sayles point out, what may seem to executives like the proverbial free lunch--outside experts taking responsibility for the endless vexations associated with information systems management--is far from free. Often, new systems that are supposed to respond effortlessly to managerial commands are over-priced, clumsy, and sometimes useless. Insider Strategies for Outsourcing Information Systems offers executives and managers experience-based guidelines that will enable them to avoid the seductive myths and illusions that distort contractor selection and new system planning decisions. At the heart of the book are three extended cases studies--a famous specialty retailer, a financial services company, and a European telecom company--that highlight the most frequent sources of new system failure, as well as how a client's measured involvement in the process of fine-tuning a new system can bring superb results. In clear and precise language, Ripin and Sayles make explicit the skills and solutions that have proven effective in outsourcing a wide variety information systems, from new application software to enterprise-wide networks. Today, insatiable corporate expectations, an unforgiving stock market, and a brutal global economy have made it imperative that managers at all levels effectively administer their information networks. Insider Strategies for Outsourcing Information Systems is the book that will help them insure that their businesses survive--and thrive--in the information age.

                          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Essential reading for buyers of custom software.......1999-10-01

This book prepares buyers of custom software for the pitfalls inherent in developing a system. It explains why there must be give and take between buyer and developer, and why "tough" contracts offer little protection. I suspect this will come as news to many first-time buyers.

5 out of 5 stars Insights into why Systems Development Projects succeed/fail........1999-04-11

I have never seen such pithy insights into why major development projects fail - and succeed. Rarely does anyone speak to management with such candor about their mistakes. And provide such clear and well founded examples of both success and failure. Anyone in a position to make decisions about new systems development should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Bible for life with information systems outsourcing........1999-04-06

As a consultant involved in strategy change and training, I have seen the fruitless internal conflict over who is to blame when new systems are late or clumsy to implement. Any company involved in or considering new systems development will find Ripin and Sayles an invaluable resource for negotiating with potential vendors and facilitating IS development projects. They stress what is so often forgotten: the critical role of line manager and user participation ... including more realistic trade-offs between costs (and failure risks) and ambitious client wish lists. Their vivid case studies illustrate how client managers obtain new skills by project participation that enable them to make more effective use of these costly new technologies and even to fine tune applications. Outsourcer professionals and client staff and line managers will find Ripin and Sayles an engaging, well documented, and widely useful book on developing and implementing new information systems. A must read!
