            Book Description

The Practice of Making Strategy takes the student through the process of making strategy with a management team. This is a highly practical book based on a wealth of organizational applications in large and small organizations, public and not-for-profit as well as commercial settings. It presents techniques that can be used to develop a business model, and manage key strategic issues. The techniques are used to develop strategies for units, departments and operating companies, as well as for a complete organization.

For those teaching strategic management the book provides links to the major texts in the strategy field. The material making up this book has been used successfully with new practitioners - consultants, and practising managers. Many managers use the material to guide the development of a strategy for their own group within a larger corporation.

The book reflects powerful theories from the fields of strategic management, social psychology, psychology, operational research, and organizational behaviour that are brought together in Eden and Ackermann's Making Strategy: the Journey of Strategic Management (1998, 2nd Edition forthcoming). The Practice of Making Strategy extends this material into a step-by-step process with examples and real cases. The book includes chapters on: how to get started with a management team; surfacing and structuring strategic issues; developing a goals system; working with patterns of distinctive competencies; developing and testing the business model; achieving closure.

This book will be set reading for MBA students, to be used alongside the main textbooks in strategy courses. It will also fit perfectly with managers wanting to do their own strategy making, and with consultants working in this field.

4 out of 5 stars Become productive in Making Strategy.......2005-05-30

With their book The Practice of Making Strategy Ackermann, Eden and Brown have written in my opinion a very useful extension to the book Making Strategy (The Journey of Strategic Management) Eden and Ackermann published in 1998.

When coming across Making Strategy in 1999, I was very pleased by both its' conceptual richness and practical starting points. After this I started applying "the Journey approach" in various settings; as a strategy facilitator (facilitating clients), as an entrepreneur/manager (being part of a management team being facilitated by others) and as a teacher (introducing the approach to others). My enthusiasm for the realm of this approach has been affirmed ever since. However, I gradually concluded that the core technique of cause mapping, and the various specific stages and ways in which it is applied, require attentive mastering. As I tend to symbolize it; more comparable to gradually learning coastal yacht racing in contrast to learning how to handle a small motorboat on a lake. Furthermore, I noticed that the conceptual richness of the book Making Strategy for some people worked out as a barrier to start getting to grips with its practical application. Especially so for professionals being given, or giving themselves, days rather than weeks for getting sufficiently familiar in order to start adopting a new approach.

The Practice of Making Strategy really helps overcoming the two remarks I set out above. It offers a clear step-by-step guide to students and professionals. Following this guide, within 3 to 5 days one gets a good understanding of, and taste for, the method while making a practical start applying it (e.g. by completing the build up of exercises). After this first walk through, and becoming a well prepared novice, the book remains valuable as a book of reference during the subsequent process of developing expertise when applying it. Not least because of the very practical and nicely detailed descriptions of cases where the authors applied (parts of) the method. Furthermore, for getting started I would strongly recommend the additional material referred to in the book, such as; a (free) demo version of cause mapping software and an instruction CD (with movie) on cognitive mapping.

I think that The Practice of Making Strategy discloses as much of the expertise of the authors as is possible through a medium such as a book. Relative to further dissipation of a practice of Making Strategy I have two suggestions I would like to express. The first one is that, in order to address the dynamics and situation specificity of applying a rich method such as Making Strategy, a suggestion could be to somehow stimulate and/or facilitate the formation of communities of 8 to 10 frequent practitioners exchanging experiences and hints & tips. (anyhow, if you are such a frequent practitioner and have the same need, I'm interested in hearing so and give it a try). The second one is that after having first laid out a theoretical framework for a scientifically oriented audience and now this step-by-step guide for a professional audience, the authors could probably consider concluding a trilogy by working out an introduction of Making Strategy to an audience of those responsible for the initiation and consequences of strategic decisions within organizations.

            5 out of 5 stars A real practice book!.......2004-12-14

One might think that there is already a sufficient amount of "how to"- strategy books on the market. Normally I would agree, but the book of Colin Eden, Fran Ackermann and Ian Brown positively stands out from this crowd in a very distinctive way.

The authors have accomplished the most difficult task in writing a practical guide on a complex topic, something that is easier said than done. Without over-simplifying the challenging process of strategy making or neglecting theoretical insights, they created an easy-to-read book that guides its reader through a clear series of process steps in a comprehensible manner - using insights, interventions and techniques which are well grounded in practice. That already makes it the most substantial practice book in strategic management available, at least of what I am aware of.

This book perfectly matches "Making Strategy: The journey of strategic management" by Colin Eden and Fran Ackermann (Sage, 1998) which provides the theoretical setting for the proposed strategy making process in this piece of work. Despite their academic background, the authors took the practice claim seriously and structured the book in a target-oriented and user-friendly manner. The text is neither abstract or academic nor loaded with academic references. All chapters are quick to the point and include clear descriptions of tasks as well as helpful examples and exercises. The five case studies are well chosen, create real images about the practical processes by their narrative style and support comprehension at the right point. But most importantly, each chapter provides practical "hints and tips" on top of "commentaries and issues" on the tasks in order to avoid typical pitfalls in strategy making processes. Especially these commentaries and tips were extremely useful to keep a focus on real important issues and they were very helpful for my own practical work. Discussing issues in working with consultants/facilitators or how to manage incomplete processes underline the consequent practice orientation of this book. The way the whole book is written, its sound understanding of strategic change processes and its accentuation on common difficulties in practice demonstrate the extensive practical experiences of the authors. In all, the book nearly always comes right to the point and meets its aim to guide the reader through the process of strategy making in practice. This book really deserves to be called a "practice book".

After you have read this book, you will immediately ask yourself when, where and how you could apply this strategy making process within your own organization. This is not only a good indicator that this book has practical relevance in general but also that it has encouraged you towards "I can do, too!" That's what a good practice book is about and the reason for me to give five stars.

              Book Description

Coping With City Growth assesses British performance with city growth during the First Industrial Revolution by combining the tools used by Third World analysts with the archival attention and eclectic style of the economic historian. What emerges is an exciting and provocative new account of a very old problem. The debate over Third World city growth is hardly new, and can be found in the British Parliamentary Papers as early as the 1830s, in treatises by political economists, and in the British Press. This book should change the way urban history is written in the future and influence the way we think about contemporary Third World cities.

                  Book Description

This timely book addresses the important issue of the negative effects of anticompetitive regulation on industry and the massive economic harm it causes. The distinguished contributors, including economic and legal scholars, advocate the need for a review of all anticompetitive laws and address several industry and country case studies with the ultimate aim of providing recommendations to eliminate the impact of anticompetitive regulation.

The first part of the book considers regulations affecting private business and professions, part two covers public utility and public services regulation, while part three discusses the role of institutions and competition authorities in relation to anticompetitive practices. The authors draft guidelines, based on economic evidence and legal arguments, which would provide a starting point for the European Union to address the problem. They go on to propose possible implementation strategies for these guidelines from both an institutional and legal perspective. The book also includes a historical perspective on the evolution of anticompetitive regulation complemented by an overview of the actions currently being implemented to address and reverse the problem in other jurisdictions.

Although primarily designed to aid and assist policymakers, the multidisciplinary perspective adopted by the book means it will also become an essential companion for economists, lawyers and academics whose interests lie in the areas of regulation, deregulation and liberalization.

                  Book Description

The corporate market is now embracing free, "open source" software like never before, as evidenced by the recent success of the technologies underlying LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP). Each is the result of a publicly collaborative process among numerous developers who volunteer their time and energy to create better software.

The truth is, however, that the overwhelming majority of free software projects fail. To help you beat the odds, O'Reilly has put together Producing Open Source Software, a guide that recommends tried and true steps to help free software developers work together toward a common goal. Not just for developers who are considering starting their own free software project, this book will also help those who want to participate in the process at any level.

The book tackles this very complex topic by distilling it down into easily understandable parts. Starting with the basics of project management, it details specific tools used in free software projects, including version control, IRC, bug tracking, and Wikis. Author Karl Fogel, known for his work on CVS and Subversion, offers practical advice on how to set up and use a range of tools in combination with open mailing lists and archives. He also provides several chapters on the essentials of recruiting and motivating developers, as well as how to gain much-needed publicity for your project.

While managing a team of enthusiastic developers -- most of whom you've never even met -- can be challenging, it can also be fun. Producing Open Source Software takes this into account, too, as it speaks of the sheer pleasure to be had from working with a motivated team of free software developers.

5 out of 5 stars In my case, five stars is an understatement.......2007-07-27

Just yesterday I was talking to a friend about this book and we discovered each other very glad with it. First of all, the author has a lot of experience with the theme in question. Furthermore, Karl Fogel is very compelling with words. He knows how to write down his experience in a way that is pleasant, certainly due to a lot of writes he had made through plenties of open source projects.

With this book you will be in touch with topics like the needed infra-structure to setup open source projects, the dinamics of the open source community, strategies for packaging and releasing software, common issues that arise in open source daily development and how to workaround then, a brief about licenses (with properly links for more information on this topic); just to highlight some aspects.

This book was the first hand someone land me into the open source world. It's helping me in three ways: to extract more from open source softwares that already exist, to start my own open source project, and to look at software development through a new, different, and till now better perspective.

                  Hope this review helps you!

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for Open Source project leaders.......2007-06-19

If you have already read pretty much everything that there is to be read about why you'd want to start, manage, fund or participate in an Open Source project, but want to know everything about how best to do it, then Karl Fogel's Producing Open Source Software is the book for you.

Drawing from his extensive experience with the Subversion project, Fogel provides in this book a comprehensive overview of all aspects of Open Source software development, covering technical, social, political, economical, legal, and managerial aspects.

While the book is more aimed at medium-to-large scale projects, especially those involving some kind of corporate entity, there is much in it that is applicable to most projects, excluding maybe only those little, one-man efforts that rarely become successful. But if you are the originator of one of the latter and, should it suddenly attract a wide following, you'd better be prepared to face the unavoidable problems that popularity brings. This book will come in handy in this case.

Here are, in my opinion, the strong points of the book:

                  * Providing a concise, yet comprehensive, overview of all aspects of Open Source development. This is really the manual of open development.

                  * Demonstrating that there is much in open development that is similar to more traditional, corporate-style software development (you cannot always rely on good will and volunteers), but also much that is different, in motivation, rewards and objectives.

                  * Putting the accent on the human aspect of development: mutual respect between participants is often the deciding factor in determining whether a project will thrive or fail. Since even the best of intentions sometimes are not enough to foster a peaceful, productive and collaborative environment, Producing Open Source Software contains a lot of useful, practical advice that you can follow if you want to keep developers happy and motivated.

5 out of 5 stars "Must Read" for Open Source Participants.......2007-04-29

It's easy to make the mistake of viewing this book as "too fluffy" or perhaps too soft to be of any use to the practical user or developer of open source software. Nothing could be further from the truth: in a classic open source way, the author has compressed man-centuries of OS community experience into a practical working guide for anyone who wants to do something serious in this area.

5 out of 5 stars Gives you a feel for the why, not just the how.......2006-12-27

The book impressed me by the breadth and depth of the thinking that must have gone on before it was written. Mr. Fogel being an active open-source developer, I was at first suspicious that he might just be presenting his way of doing things as gospel. Quickly, though, he convinced me that he reflects his ways more profoundly than most other people I know, myself included. Maybe that, in itself, is a consequence of open-source development processes?

5 out of 5 stars Project Management Analysis.......2007-06-11

I've read a previous printing of this book from 1997 or around then...I found this book to be very helpful in assessing and analyzing the parts of the project and making sure I don't run into the pitfalls of each phase. It was a great followup for me after Steve McConnell's book on project surivial. After reading this book, I was able to drill down in more detail each portion of a project before I was undertaking it to make sure I handled the project in the right ways.

5 out of 5 stars Effective techniques and easy reading.......2002-06-19

I've read more than 50 books on project management, and have reviewed a good number of them, but this is the first one that was fun to read. The author manages to keep the tone light and conversational, yet touch all of the important aspects of successfully managing software projects. While I am one of those die hards who doesn't believe in silver bullets--those elusive shortcuts to accomplishing complex tasks--any more than I believe in the tooth fairy, I think that the approach in this book comes close.

Although the tone is light, the techniques are solid. I like the way the author strips away non-essential tasks and focuses on what is essential to successfully managing a project. He starts with visualizing the goal, which is an exercising in defining project objectives, and introduces a key concept that will be used through the book: Probability of Success Indicator (PSI). These indicators are checkpoints for ensuring that all critical success factors are satisfied and are closely tied to risk management. I especially like the common sense way projects are approached - develop a checklist, emphasize leadership and teamwork, carefully plan and manage expectations and communicate. These are the essence of project management, regardless of whether you are using the U.S. standard set forth in the PMBOK or the UK PRINCE2 approach. In fact, all of the techniques, including the 10-step methodology given in the book, will work with both the PMBOK and PRINCE2 approaches.

Chapters I especially liked covered assessing project plans, issue resolution and how to shorten projects using accelerated analysis and design. I found some of the appendices valuable as well, especially Appendix 1 (ISO 9000 Estimating Procedure) and Appendix 2 (Structured Project Management, which summarizes the 10-step approach. If you use MS Project (which I do not), Appendix 6, Learning Microsoft Project 2000, may be useful.

The only shortcoming is the lack of earned value as a project control tool, but for small projects this isn't a major issue. Overall this is an excellent book for new project managers for software development projects and it is also full of tips and techniques that an experienced project manager will appreciate.

The author provides a Ten Step process that certainly sounds workable. I have no doubt that it DOES work. It would have been nice to see more rationale and discussion of why this particular method is "necessary and sufficient" to run a project. He never really talks about why this method is sufficient. Proof by repeated claim doesn't count. It was still pretty good despite that flaw.

5 out of 5 stars My preferred project management book........1998-04-01

This book provides an excellent project management process that is simple and easy to put in place. I read the first edition several years ago and find the new one to be even better. The dry wit and anecdotes also make it a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Best practice project management for practioners.......1998-01-10

This book presents a very practical project management approach based on 10 steps covering project planning and implementation. In addition, a variety of useful practical tools, advice and lessons learned are presented.

The book is clearly written and thanks to many examples and interesting real life stories fun to read. As an experienced project manager I regard this Structured Project Management Approach as best practice in project management and have decided to introduce this concept into my work environment.

This new book offers you practical, real-world steps to creating a Structured Project Management (SPM) system throughout your organization. Based on the ten steps in best-selling author Fergus O?Connell?s previous book, How to Run Successful Projects, this book expands on that concept in order to keep today?s high-tech companies competitive, on budget, and on schedule. Using SPM company-wide, you create a system wherein unforeseen challenges or problems occur on a localized level where they do not affect the system-wide enterprise. All project tasks are clearly described as being both unique and part of a larger scheme, giving definition and a sense of importance to individuals, departments, divisions, and an entire company. This approach aligns an organization?s strategic goals and daily operations along a single path. Offering real-world examples and practical, immediate lessons, How to Run Successful High-Tech Project-Based Organizations is a dynamic tool for business leaders, IT managers, project managers, and other executives wanting to run their organizations at maximum efficiency.

A very entertaining read. Wonderful writing style. Chapters tend to be short and begin with a short quiz. The author interjects humor into what is often a boring subject. The final portion of the chapters consist of templates for use in your own work.

Very useful from a practical point of view as well. The focus of this book is on the big picture ideas. The author lays out the important conceptual steps which are vital for success. The more technical details (such as using software) are well covered in other books and this one does not go into those in detail.

Some of the great take aways from this book include; estimating the probability of success of a project, practical strategies for saving projects gone awry, how to review proposed projects before the expensive work begins.

I am glad I bought this book.

5 out of 5 stars Shows service companies how to attain world-class status.......2001-04-25

After working for various consulting companies I have discovered that the best have established processes that are based on project management and customer satisfaction, and the worst have no processes at all. This book provides a recipe from going from worst to best.

This is the second of Mr. O'Connell's books that I have read. The first was Running Successful Projects, in which he provides excellent advice on how to effectively and skillfully manage projects. In How to Run Successful High-Tech Project-Based Organizations he extends these practices to organizations, and does so by providing a step-by-step approach and a performance model that is the basis for company-wide processes.

He gives ten steps that every consulting or service company needs to incorporate, and does so in a clear and methodical manner. The steps themselves are easy, the barrier is leadership and management from the top. Unfortunately, Mr. O'Connell doesn't address how to get management on board, but that is outside of the scope of this book. My personal view is Mr. O'Connell advises and the wise will abide.

I thought that the two strongest chapters in this book were the organization-wide status report, which is sorely missing in too many companies, and the program for project-based organization. The organization-wide status report is the key to achieving teamwork because it communicates to the entire company and makes everyone a stakeholder in the company's success instead of relegating them to a cog in an impersonal machine. This, by the way, is one of the most basic tenets of good leadership, and the lack of leadership is why too many consulting companies are in chaos, have abysmal records for execution, and poor client satisfaction.

Part three of this book offers the real roadmap to success: treating your organization as a project. This is a unique approach and is really an excellent foundation for strategic and tactical planning. I saw how this aspect of Mr. O'Connell's approach provides the essence of a vision, mission statement and values.

This book, if read and taken to heart at the right level in a consulting company (or any other kind of company that delivers services), can make the difference between achieving world-class status and extinction. There would be less material for Dilbert cartoons if everyone read this book and applied the information.

                  5 out of 5 stars How to run successful high-tech project-based organizations.......2000-04-06

Really it is a great book to read. All High-tech Project managers should read it. Easy to read, well organized, direct to the point approach, makes it an useful book.

From identifying project boundaries, calculating the reward of projects completed early, and building Work Breakdown Structures? to conducting risk analysis, monitoring and controlling a plan, and selling a plan, this book will help you cut project time while improving effectiveness. A fully-worked, industrial-strength example of the planning and execution of a software project is included.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its title - highly recommended.......2001-07-08

This book is a condensed, fast paced approach to managing projects. Don't be misled by the title into believing that the theme is about managing web projects - it's about reducing the cycle time involved in initiating and managing projects, and the steps you need to take in order to ensure both speed of delivery and overall success of the project.

The approach is presented in informal style. I actually felt as though Mr. O'Connell was mentoring me through a project. He starts with a discussion of project management in general and some key issues, such as how much planning is enough, ensuring the project is valid and cost-effective, and setting scope. When he moves into the planning stage of the project he starts off with a work breakdown structure (WBS). I definitely like this approach because, in my opinion, any planning that does not start with a WBS is doomed to almost certain failure. He also covers estimating, and who should be doing it. Again, I'm in complete agreement with his advice that the best estimators are the people who will be doing the actual work. He also covers risk management, schedule optimization and all of the "due diligence" steps a good project manager would accomplish. Project execution and control is treated in the same methodical manner as planning. All of the key items are addressed, such as continuous monitoring and schedule refinement, resource allocation and status reporting. In this section the methods Mr. O'Connell proposes are reinforced with a week-by-week description of an example project. This adds a lot of credibility to how approach and also makes learning project management from this book relatively easy.

There is much to like about this book: Mr. O'Connell's engaging writing style, a sensible approach to planning, scheduling and controlling projects that leaves nothing out, and the worked examples that are provided in every chapter. Most importantly, though, is the fact that the book lives up to its promise of showing you how to run *successful* projects in web time, because the approach that is presented contains no fluff, and eliminates a lot of rework or lost efficiency by doing the right things the right way - the first time.
