      Book Description

Most children engage with a range of popular cultural forms outside of school. Their experiences with film, television, computer games and other cultural texts are very motivating, but often find no place within the official curriculum, where children are usually restricted to conventional forms of literacy.

This book demonstrates how to use children's interests in popular culture to develop literacy in the primary classroom. The authors provide a theoretical basis for such work through an exploration of related theory and research, drawing from the fields of education, sociology and cultural studies.

Teachers are often concerned about issues of sexism, racism, violence and commercialism within the discourse of children's media texts. The authors address each of these areas and show how such issues can be explored directly with children. They present classroom examples of the use of popular culture to develop literacy in schools and include interviews with children and teachers regarding this work.

This book is relevant to all teachers and students who want to develop their understanding of the nature and potential role of popular culture within the curriculum. It will also be useful to language co-ordinators, advisers, teacher educators and anyone interested in media education in the 5-12 age-range.

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Solution To Information Overload.......2000-08-18

I found the worksheets alone in this book worth the price. When you follow the step-by-step instructions, the worksheets cull out only the data you need. With all the extraneous data out of the way, it's easy to pinpoint critical problems that you might miss otherwise. And it makes developing key indicators and reports easier as well. I think any CEO who wants to keep the company's accounting and human resource managers on top of things at all times should give them this book tomorrow...if not sooner.

I recommend this book to my coaching clients because it gives them a real system to develop strategy and then measure performance. Everyone wants a simple way to stay on track with their goals, and this book offers organizational planning advice, suggestions on how to effectively communicate the plan with employees, and then reports to make sure there is accountability for results.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute necessity!.......2000-08-06

Whether you work in a large company or small, are new to business or are a long-time professional, you will find something invaluable in this book. I bought the 1st edition, and this 2nd edition adds several new sections: there is a whole new chapter devoted to Human Resources, and great sections on holding a strategic planning meeting and writing a business plan. This book should be on every business person's bookshelf - you'll use it again and again.

                              Book Description

The "self-made" man is a familiar figure in nineteenth-century American history. But the relentless expansion of market relations that facilitated such stories of commercial success also ensured that individual bankruptcy would become a prominent feature in the nation's economic landscape. In this ambitious foray into the shifting character of American capitalism, Edward Balleisen explores the economic roots and social meanings of bankruptcy, assessing the impact of widespread insolvency on the evolution of American law, business culture, and commercial society.

Balleisen makes innovative use of the rich and previously overlooked court records generated by the 1841 Federal Bankruptcy Act, building his arguments on the commercial biographies of hundreds of failed business owners. He crafts a nuanced account of how responses to bankruptcy shaped two opposing elements of capitalist society in mid-nineteenth-century America--an entrepreneurial ethos grounded in risk taking and the ceaseless search for new markets, new products, and new ways of organizing economic activity, and an urban, middle-class sensibility increasingly averse to the dangers associated with independent proprietorship and increasingly predicated on salaried, white-collar employment.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is No Bust.......2001-05-19

Early in 2001, two big economics stories crossed paths and received vastly different coverage. The meltdown of the "dot-coms" dominated the front pages. Meanwhile, congressional passage of a new bankruptcy law that threatened to establish more favorable terms for creditors passed mostly under the radar screen.

Edward Balleisen's engaging social and economic history of bankruptcy in the mid-19th century United States anticipates today's trends, both noisy and quiet. It is a lively yet thorough chronicle of the kinds of booms and busts to which capitalism is prone. When a New Yorker of 1837 ruefully remarks that fortunes "have melted away like the snows before an April sun," it is easy to believe that his cruelest month is ours as well.

One of the book's many virtues lies in reminding readers that lesser-known stories-such as the passage of bankruptcy laws-may have a bigger long-term impact than panics and crashes themselves. Liberal bankruptcy laws have been and remain important for many economic and cultural reasons. Some of the characters in this book-and they are truly characters, a tribute to Balleisen's skills as a writer-yield to disappointment and become the security-seeking cadres of corporate capitalism. Others take the "double or nothing" pledge and become even more reckless entrepreneurs.

This is historical writing at its best: by opening a window on crucial but little-known episodes in the nation's past, it lets through rays of insight that illuminate the present.

It makes a perfect complement to the book called "101 of the best Corporate Team-Building Activities we know!" since there are no overlapping activites and the "101" book is focused on problem-solving activites.

                                  Book Description

Only practice makes perfect -- especially when it comes to selling products and services on the telephone. But very few people working in the fast-growing field of telesales understand what they should be practicing.

The fact is that there Is a unique set of techniques and methods that work best on the phone, and Teleselling Techniques That Close the Sale is the first book to clearly and completely outline the rules of the game.

Based on the author's vast experience in telesales, the book explores the differences between in-person and on-phone selling. And it supplies practical guidelines for using the six ingredients of a successful sales call:

                                  ** exuding energy and enthusiasm
                                  ** qualifying the call
                                  ** talking to the decision-maker
                                  ** setting objectives
                                  ** investigating thoroughly
                                  ** closing the sale

                                    Book Description

The issue of international antitrust enforcement is high on the agenda for both developed and developing countries. Bilateral cooperation between antitrust agencies, in particular the EC and US agencies, is the focus of this new work. It first shows how bilateral cooperation was developed as a response to the limits of the unilateral and extraterritorial application of national competition laws, and how it has evolved from an instrument initially designed to avoid conflicts into a tool aimed at coordinating joint investigations of international competition cases. It then considers how bilateral cooperation could be used optimally, by analysing two forms of advanced cooperation: the exchange of confidential information, and positive comity, which is the only satisfactory answer competition law can provide to market access cases.

                                      Book Description

Innovations are adopted when users integrate them in meaningful ways into existing social practices. Histories of major technological innovations show that often the creative initiative of users and user communities becomes the determining factor in the evolution of particular innovations. The evolutionary routes of the telephone, the Internet, the World Wide Web, email, and the Linux operating system all took their developers by surprise. Articulation of these technologies as meaningful products and systems was made possible by innovative users and unintended resources. Iterative and interactive models have replaced the traditional linear model of innovation during the last decade. Yet, heroic innovators and entrepreneurs, unambiguous functionality of products, and a focus on the up-stream aspects of innovation still underlie much discussion on innovation, intellectual property rights, technology policy, and product development. Coherent conceptual, theoretical and practical conclusions from research on knowledge creation, theory of learning, history of technology, and the social basis of innovative change have rarely been made. This book argues that innovation is about creating meaning; that it is inherently social; and is grounded in existing social practices. To understand the social basis of innovation and technology development we have to move beyond the traditional product-centric view on innovations. Integrating concepts from several disciplinary perspectives and detailed analyses of the evolution of Internet-related innovations, including packet-switched computer networks, World Wide Web, and the Linux open source operating system, the book develops foundations for a new theoretical and practical understanding of innovation. For example, it shows that innovative development can occur in two qualitatively different ways, one based on evolving specialization and the other based on recombination of existing socially produced resources. The expanding communication and collaboration networks have increased the importance of the recombinatory mode making mobility of resources, sociotechnical translation mechanisms, and meaning creation in communities of practice increasingly important for innovation research and product development.
