Picking up where he left off in "Competitive Advantage on the Shop Floor", Lazonick deepens his critique of capitalism's self-representation in neoclassical economic theory. Combining the insights of Schumpeter, Marshall and Marx, he convincingly argues that the emergence of large corporations actually displace "free market" "mechanisms" of resource allocation, radically changes the manner in which the pricing of commodities occurs, and transforms the balance of power between workers and the owners of enterprises. Central to his analysis is the various ways in which organizational complexity and planning within large firms leads to an undemocratic politics of knowledge creation and diffusion that determines the division of the firm's revenue into wages and profits. In the process of narrating the emergence of corporate capitalism, Lazonick elaborates on how large enterprises become locked into economies of speed that exacerbate "labor-management" tensions that, in turn, sap firm's abilities to innovate in the face of international competition. When societies fall prey to these problems, economic stagnation and class conflict result and those with the power within corporations use that power to grab a larger share of a revenue-pie that is either growing at a much slower rate or shrinking. For Lazonick, capitalism is a non-equilibrium process that is always political, generative of uncertainty and an "inequality [that] has undermined the incentives for those who participate in the business organization's specialized division of labor to make the long-term commitment's of their skills and efforts that the innovation process requires." Like "Competitive Advantage on the Shop Floor", this one is a must read; and at a fraction of the cost.

BUYER BEWARE.......2001-04-28

Unless you want to spend useless hours searching through thousands upon thousands of scholarships, I would steer clear of buying this book. I bought this book thinking I would find some scholarship opportunities and just found myself fustrated and out of 25 bucks. The book is not organized well and all the scholarships have very strict criteria making it almost impossible to find a scholarship you match for. This book may be good for a school guidance office, but because of the disorganization it is probably useless for a student to sit in the office looking at thousands of scholarships they are not qualified for.

This book really helps you. It gives more opitions than just good grades and also tells you how to do it with good grades. I learned SAT scores can help as well. If you read this book I guarntee will get some type of scholarship, but if you don't know you looked in the right place because now I am so sure that will get some type now and then I did before. The reading is worth every minute.

The book gave an excellent introduction to the formation of the United States bureacracy. The chapters on public participation were valuable. The book was an interesting read and excellent for an overview of democracy from the postion of governing.

Meier's book skims over policymaking in the bureaucracy and focuses mainly on the federal bureaucracy. This slim volume has good examples but one would hope for more depth considering the book's hefty price. In addition, the author's liberal slant can be a bit distracting. However, it does present some interesting ideas for public policy students to consider.

The first chapter--despite its title, "Why you need life insurance"--attempts to define all sorts of life insurance jargon without explaining why someone would need this stuff. After stumbling over the fifth or sixth typo, I gave up on this book. I hope better ones are out there.
