Book Description
Quality improvement: it's an attractive concept on paper. So why do the vast majority of quality improvement efforts fail? William Roth knows from experience: as a Ph.D in systems theory, an ex-corporate manager, a professor-and the designer (with the AQP) of a national program to deliver training for quality credentials in the systems approach. His belief: enduring quality improvement is an "all or nothing" situation-requiring a systemic approach, with all the key components and integrations in place and fully integrated right from the start. Quality Improvement: A Systems Perspective explains the sometimes surprising historic roots of the quality improvement movement, and outlines the systems theory on which successful models must be built. Readers then gain access to the hands-on, nuts-and-bolts, how-to-get-it-done details of the five critical phases. Three case studies (two in industry, one in health care) support this traditional but currently shunned model. Along with his unique unified view of quality improvement, Roth explains why it is shunned, and why alternative approaches usually do not produce the desired results. Key obstacles to success are directly identified-top-level management, local union leaders, management education. The ultimate culprit, though, is culture-to which Roth suggests how to move organizations in the right direction, from a systems perspective. With one of the most comprehensive overviews of quality management essentials in one volume, Quality Improvement: A Systems Perspective balances theory and modeling with the details of real-life implementation and success.
Customer Reviews:
Idealizing the Ideal System.......2004-01-21
Quality Improvement: A Systems Perspective by William F. Roth is a concise and informative book for those considering incorporating quality in business. The author begins by explaining quality improvement and how it can be achieved by modifying areas within an organizational system. Central to the ideas for success of quality improvement involve the full participation of all employees, the continuous interactive planning, and the holistic approach that is crucial to accomplishing a well integrated quality system. The author provides examples of companies where the quality process was initiated through the use of steps and guidelines involving the collective efforts of all employees, from the top to the bottom of an organization. The practical points and issues raised by the author provides the reader with the critical perspectives on achieving successful quality improvement. The text also discusses reasons for the failure and success of quality efforts.
The author includes an analysis of important learning concepts that must be taught in business schools to provide the critical building blocks for effective organizational leadership. Quantitative analysis is extremely useful but for true quality derived from improvement of systems to be achieved, business students must be instructed in the analysis of skills in workers that are nonquantifiable. This book was brilliantly written and exposed the quality process at work at International Paper mills and at the Good Shepherd Rehab Center. These two examples have been provided to illustrate the different way in which a quality improvement process empowered employees.
This text is as brilliant and practical today as when it was written years ago. The ideal corporate American system is embodied in the writing of this book. If one can sit back and idealize the perfect situation in work as in life, as the author discusses, one becomes that much closer to fulfilling his individual potential and the realization of his dreams.

A crash course in getting significant business results from a Web site-at low cost
Web Business Bootcamp focuses on activities that anyone can do to improve their online business, even with little cash and without technical sophistication. Richard Seltzer outlines the tasks that entrepreneurs and e-commerce managers typically delegate to experts without knowing enough to properly set goals, coordinate activities, or monitor progress-and then provides low-tech, low-cost techniques for making informed decisions and getting the hands-on experience needed to do smart business on the Internet. Businesses both large and small can apply his innovative ideas such as "flypaper" and "content-based Internet marketing"-effective strategies he has learned and used with his own Web site-to attract targeted traffic to their Web sites.

Book Description
Conflicting Accounts is the story of the rise, crash, and rebirth of the largest and arguably most significant advertising agency in the world -- Saatchi and Saatchi. Author Kevin Goldman, former daily advertising columnist for the Wall Street Journal, guides us through a lushly detailed account of the feats and foibles of two of the most colorful characters in the ad business: the reclusive Charles Saatchi, a renowned art collector and the creative force behind Saatchi & Saatchi; and his younger brother Maurice, the ever-so-charming rainmaker whose tony lifestyle and questionable management skills eventually led to his downfall.
Customer Reviews:
Readable, but unmemorable.......1998-09-27
From this type of book (business history), I want to come away with more than just history and facts, I want insight and revelation. With Conflicting Accounts, I got little of the latter.

Book Description
Embedded Politics offers a unique framework for analyzing the impact of past industrial networks on the way postcommunist societies build new institutions to govern the restructuring of their economies. Drawing on a detailed analysis of communist Czechoslovakia and contemporary Czech industries and banks, Gerald A. McDermott argues that restructuring is best advanced through the creation of deliberative or participatory forms of governance that encourages public and private actors to share information and take risks. Further, he contends that institutional and organizational changes are intertwined and that experimental processes are shaped by how governments delegate power to local public and private actors and monitor them.
Using comparative case analysis of several manufacturing sectors, Embedded Politics accounts for change and continuity in the formation of new economic governance institutions in the Czech Republic. It analytically links the macropolitics of state policy with the micropolitics of industrial restructuring. Thus the book advances an alternative approach for the comparative study of institutional change and industrial adjustment.
As a historical and contemporary analysis of Czech firms and public institutions, this book will command the attention of students of postcommunist reforms, privatization, and political-economic transitions in general. But also given its interdisciplinary approach and detailed empirical analysis of policy-making and firm behavior, Embedded Politics is a must read for scholars of politics, economics, sociology, political economy, business organization, and public policy.
Gerald A. McDermott is Assistant Professor of Management in The Wharton School of Management at The University of Pennsylvania. His research applies recent advances in comparative political economy and industrial organization, including theories of social networks, historical institutionalism, and incomplete markets to analyze issues of economic governance, firm creation, and industrial restructuring in advanced and newly industrialized countries. As evidenced by Embedded Politics, his current focus is on problems of institutional and organizational learning in the formation of meso-level governance institutions in emerging market and postsocialist economies.
McDermott also works as Senior Research Fellow at the IAE Escuela de Direccion y Negocios at Universidad Austral in Buenos Aires, and he has served as Project Coordinator at the Inter-American Development Bank. He has consulted for the Finance, Private Sector, and Infrastructure Division at the World Bank and advised the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic. In addition he has published many papers and book chapters on entrepreneurship, privatization, institutions, and networks in Central Europe and Latin America.

Excellent Insight into Business Intelligence via the Web.......2002-10-11
There are a lot of books on business intelligence and the web, some of them are better than others. Typically the focus of these books is on click stream analysis and focus on the CRM aspects of business intelligence over the web. While these topics are discussed, there is more to this book.
This book is a bit different and is interesting for both the novice and the experienced system implementer. The book gives a history of Internet, both from a technical and economic perspective. It even deals with how the Internet works. Answering such questions as why an IP address is an unreliable way of identifying customers over the net. The book looks at both collecting data for business intelligence applications as well as how to deploy these applications over the net using Internet technology. It discusses some of the aspects of the Java language that makes it well suited for develop BI applications. It also presents various Java API's developed for business intelligence.
I really enjoyed reading this book. At times reading a heavy technology book can be a bit dry. This book is not like that. At times he will introduce topics with discussions that seem off the topic, but in the`end lead back to main point. In fact, these diversions actually helped my understanding of the subject. While this is certainly a serious book, there were times I laughed out loud. This is a good book for understanding business intelligence over the Internet. If you are interested in this subject, by all means you should read this book.
"Must Have" For Your E-BI Library.......2002-10-04
If you are involved in E-Business Intelligence, then this is a book worth reading. I enjoyed Kimball's "Building the Data Webhouse" and Mena's "Mining your web site", but this book takes a different perspective on the subject. Each of these books provide their own view on how the Internet had affected business intelligence.
There is a lot of detail in this book that would make it of interest to an implementer. It discusses many of the technologies used to build an Internet enabled application, such as XML, CWMI and Java. For example, in the section on Java, the author discusses the Java beans, the OLAP API and the data mining API. The book even provides some discussion on how you can use an application server in a business intelligence system.
I would definitely recommend this to any IT professional interested in the subject.
A good fundation.......2002-10-02
This book provides an excellent foundation in understanding the how to build a business intelligence system in an Internet enabled world. The author makes the point that the Internet has changed a lot about the business world, part of the change is how we do business intelligence.
The beginning of the book was very interesting. It describes the history of the Internet from the early 1960's through the 90's. It also goes into the economic forces formed to create the popularity of the Internet. That is just the beginning though.
Don't mistake this for some soft, "touchy-feely" book on IEBI though. The book digs deep into details. It describes the implementation of three tiered architectures, Java, Java Beans. There is an entire chapter on CWMI and another on XML and XSL. It is a very good read. The final section of the book is dedicated to applying IEBI to CRM. It deals with how and why you would want to use cookies to track customer behavior.
The author makes the point that there is no one book that will cover all aspects of IEBI, but anyone interested in doing business intelligence in an Internet enabled world should read this book.
