Insightful information and good examples of essays and recommendations. I also liked the directors of admission's quotes. It is pretty much the same advices you hear when you go to the School's info sessions but on the book the advices are clearly linked to how you write each part of your application.

Great book, but nothing new from previous editions.......2007-08-31

Needless to say, this book is now the Bible of MBA applications.

What works:

1. Lots of advice, starting from the basics.
2. Tons of feedback from Admissions Committee Members
3. Essay samples

What doesnt:

1. Essay samples are limited to people who were leaders, consultants, etc etc. I dont believe these form the majority, Instead, I think the majority applicants are engineers, investment bankers and people from Asia. So the examples should have been chosen to fit that demographic too. I am more interested to see how an engineer represented himself well to get into a B-school, rather than read an essay of someone who was in the Army asa Lieutenant. It doesnt help much by publishing essays of people who're inherently different because of a very rare background.

2. Nothing much has really changed over the 2002 edition of the book. So, if you have the old one, I dont think this is worth buying. You could just use the library.

Fantastic Guide, we call it the MBA admissions bible.......2007-08-15

This is a fantastic book. I used it while in the Peace Corps to write my application to a top 5 MBA program. It has great advice on how to organize your application and your thoughts. It is not a 'shortcut' to getting in, but helps you put yourself together and show all of your background and your ambitions in the best light possible. If you're looking at even a top 10 program, this book is required reading. I can safely say probably 80% of us here used it to help us write our apps.

Wrong Title.......2007-08-10

I just think this book's title is misleading to someone who has already decided to get an MBA, researched schools, and selected the top schools to which apply. I was looking for something that was going to help me AFTER all these events have taken place as the title suggests. If you're saying: "I already know exactly what I want to do, now give me some tips to make it happen;" then this book is not for you. I found SOME tips, while skimming this tomb, and I think they're all common sense, widely available on the web, or easily obtainable simply by looking at the MBA schools' websites.

A complete guide to readying yourself for an MBA.......2007-07-07

Immediately upon receiving this book, I was shocked at it's sheer size. When I ordered it, I had neglected to notice how many pages it includes, and I assumed it was going to be relatively short since it is not expensive.

Then, I wondered how much there could be to say about the MBA admissions process, and if the book would become too repetitive. Well, as it turns out, the book doesn't repeat itself and Montauk takes advantage of every page to guide you through what it takes to get into a good MBA program.

I am still in the process of applying, but what I have found is that this book has given me a great outline of what I should be doing to prepare myself, and provided detailed steps of how to navigate each step. Studying for the GMAT, getting letters of recommedation, writing the schools' essays, interviewing, it's all covered in great detail.

I continue to use this book as a reference guide as I am going through the application process, and I find that whatever I am confused about, the answer is provided in the book.

Due to a severe water shortage and increasing salinity of natural sources, Israel is currently undergoing an intensive program of both large seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant construction and desalination of a number of wells shut down due to an increase of water salinity. There are some such wells in the vicinity of the planned large seawater desalination plants. Therefore, a proposed alternative of desalination of these sources is to use them to blend SWRO product whose salinity content has been reduced to a very low level by a second desalination pass. The foreseen specification of the desalted water regarding the upper limit of chloride and boron content in the coming international bids of large SWRO plants will probably be 70 mg/L chloride and 0.3 mg/L boron. Since a partial second pass for the SWRO is needed to achieve this specification, increasing the second pass to treat the entire or almost all the capacity of the first pass permeate can achieve product suitable for blending with some brackish source water. However, this option has to be competitive with direct desalination of the brackish water source. The comparative economics of these two alternatives is obviously dependent on the additional cost of reducing the SWRO permeate salinity vs. the cost of desalting the equivalent capacity of brackish water that could be blended with the permeate. The aim of this work was to analyze the comparative economics of these two alternatives for various types of brackish water sources.

Results are presented of a completed R&D project to develop a new process for solar seawater desalination. The central idea was to use the sun for heating air flow and to humidify that hot air by contact with seawater. After loading the air flow by a large amount of vapour, the water content can be easily recovered by cooling the humid air in dehumidification equipment. A main feature of this desalination process is to conduct the heating/humidifying procedure in several stages in order to load the air with a high amount of humidity and to reduce the volume of circulating air. Several pieces of equipment had to be developed in order to use this desalination process. Suitable and economic collectors, humidifiers and dehumidifiers were designed, manufactured and tested. Design guidelines for the new equipment and calculation methods to predict its performance are provided. This enables future construction of desalination plants working according to the new process. Furthermore, methods for pre-calculation of the optimum operating conditions of the complete process were developed. This research was based on a modern computation code as a tool. A further procedure could be derived to optimise the operation of the plant not only from a thermodynamic point of view but also from an economic one. Here the effect of multiple-stage operation on the economy of the plant could be investigated. The new equipment as well as the process were tested in two different pilot plants. The results obtained from several tests verify the applicability of the process and the reliability of the developed prediction, calculation and optimisation methods. Based on these results, an optimised design of a complete desalination plant for a small community to produce 10 m^3/d of desalted water is presented. A summary of the engineering data of this plant, a process flow sheet and a plan view are given. A preliminary study on further R&D actions and possible measures to enhance plant economy are also discussed.

This paper presents experimental data using Dewvaporation towers. The data was collected as a function of temperature and then compared against the theory for both brackish (1000 ppm) and sea waters (42,000 ppm). Based on experimental data, an overall heat transfer coefficient was determined. It was concluded that the effective heat transfer area was 25% of the total 7.9 m^2 (85 ft^2) with h"g= 15.3 W/m^2) K (2.7 Btu/h.ft^2^oF). This reduction was proven, using flow visualization experiments, to be the result of the unbalanced air streamlines on either side of the heat transfer wall. The purity of the distillate was less than 500 ppm for 42,000 ppm feed. A desiccant heat exchanger was proposed as a potential enhancement technique for energy consumption in the Dewvaporation operation. Mathematical modeling showed that the energy reuse factor could be improved by a factor of 3/2 using desiccant heat exchanger. Nevertheless, initial experimental data provided support for the desiccant concept. Finally, economics analysis was performed based on 3.8 m^3/d (1000 gal/d) production for different designs. Capital cost ranged from $1646 to $2814 and operating cost per day ranged from $3.82 to $3.43.

Description:
Dewvaporation is a relatively new technique for seawater desalination. This technique uses air as a carrier gas to evaporate liquid from a saline solution, using cross flow configuration, at atmospheric pressure. A mathematical model was developed which related the production density (kg/h.m^2) to the energy reuse factor. However, an approximate solution was established that could be used instead of the rigorous model to predict the energy reuse factor at a given production density. The cross flow was also modeled to evaluate the effect of such flow on the energy reuse factor. It was concluded that with passes greater than 15, the cross flow effect was negligible. Mylar, polypropylene, and twin wall plastic materials were used in studying the Dewvaporation technique. Different designs were constructed and tested which varied from counter flow to cross flow with spacers and without spacers on the evaporation and/or dewformation sides. Different attempts were made to maintain air streams balanced on either side of the heat transfer wall to obtain the maximum heat transfer area. The final design included cross flow with twin wall polypropylene plastics and spacers on the evaporation side only.

Assesing the book as a source for learning about the subject.......2003-04-27

By reviewing the book title and the Editorial Reviews From Book News, Inc. appearing on the website, it appears that the book offers good base of information for learning about Saline Water Processing.

A better assessment of the book would have been possible had the table of contents (Title of articles included) been given for better knowledge of covered topics.

Of particular interest is the fact that those who contributed are practitioners rather that just individuals with theoretical backgroung. Most important is the fact that there is mention of "Plant Design and Operation.

The question remains if it would be possible to have the table of contents of the book to allow a better and more specific review.
