    A nice book to learn about the STAR tests. It gives concise reviews of what the kid needs to know, so you can check her readiness. The test taking tips are very useful for first-timers to raise scores. A very helpful warm-up for both parents and kids. Note that such a thin book doesn't do much to improve math or reading. That requires daily learning in school and study in home. There is a nice web site http://www.beestar.org you can use weekly to assess your child's skill levels step by step. With the fundamentals in place, this book is a nice warm-up.

    This is a guide that helps parents to help their children learn to take the STAR tests. While nothing in this guide will improve the quality of the education the child receives, it will make both the child and parent aware of what types of questions will be on the test, how to use the process of elimination to better scores, and will help the child become comfortable with the standardized testing process. For anxious parents or anxious, test-phobic children this guide could make a bit of a difference. It also clearly explains to the parents what their child's test results mean.

            As a Human Resource Consultant, I am always looking for new ways to help organizations design and manage teams most effectively. In Selling Is a Team Sport, Eric Baron provides practical, applicable information that transcends the "sales team" and can easily be applied to all teams. In a very readable and humorous style, Mr. Baron offers his knowledge-based experience on how to obtain workable skill sets in such areas as: team building, problem-solving, needs assessment, facilitation, listening, questioning, action planning and closing. Each of these areas readily translates to all of our everyday interactions- whether it be in a team setting or on an individual basis. The applicability of this book is readily apparent, for example, the reported facts from focus groups about what "buyers" want. "Buyers" wants can easily be translated to facts about what people want in their interactions. The acronym CREST and its translation presented in Mr. Baron's book is a wonderful mnemonic to strengthen quick acquisition of these sensible approaches to dealing with people. Charts, diagrams, anectodal experiences and text make the lessons being taught by Mr. Baron easily acquired and remembered.             As a professional that has been part of the sales process from a direct sales, sales management, and marketing role I found this book to be very impactful. It offers insightful and pragmatic processes and skills that can be applied by anyone associated with the sales process. Whether you are a sales manager, a technical support professional, a product manager, or the line salesperson I think that you will find some valuable information.

            I thought the processes regarding the successful facilitation of a "team" sales call to be especially interesting.

                Trust and Reciprocity is an exciting compilation of cutting-edge experimental research into the bases of social cooperation. The editors and contributors are prominent and distinguished contributors to experimental and interdisciplinary approaches to modeling cooperation.

                The editors quickly identify the central problem of cooperation: while all gain from cooperating, each individual has an incentive to free-ride on the good will of the others. No cooperation takes place unless the free rider problem is successfully addressed. Ch. 2 presents compelling evidence that face-to-face communication alone is capable of sustaining cooperation in small groups, especially when the task is repeated several times. Moreover, if experimental subjects are allowed to fine shirkers, at a cost to themselves, they do so, despite that fact that purely self-interested subjects would never engage in such activity.

                There is a fine computer simulation (Ch. 7) that beautifully illustrates the capacity of agent-based modeling to generate interesting hypotheses concerning human behavior--in this case, the synergistic relationship between cooperation and conflict. The experimental chapters of of uniformly high quality, and quite illuminating, including a chapter on the development of trust and reciprocity in children.

                The theory side of the book is less successful. Several authors say that the experimental results "contradict game theory." This is simply incorrect. Like mathematics, game theory can be more or less useful in modeling a phenomenon, but it cannot be "wrong." Indeed, all of the experimental results are based squarely on game theory as a tool of experimental design.

                More important, despite ample evidence that trust and reciprocity cannot be explained assuming selfish individuals, the theorists in the book attempt repeatedly to assert just that. According to the authors, altruistic behavior is caused by mistakes in reasoning! The major theoretical chapter in the book (Ch. 4), for instance, is an exposition of Robert Trivers' concept of "reciprocal altruism," which is just long-term self-interest. The experimental results on reciprocity are incompatible with this concept, unless one assumes that subjects simply are ignorant and mistake-prone in their behavior. Numerous experiments show that this is decidedly not the case. In Chapter 6, we are told that subjects are only altruistic because they are afraid that the conditions of anonymity in the experiment are highly imperfect--despite the fact that the evidence for this is extremely weak (one study done in 1994, which has not been replicated, using a dictator game, which is not a social interaction or a social dilemma), and the evidence against which is virtually overwhelming. Later in the chapter we are told (p. 162) that people cooperate in one-shot games because they confuse them with repeated games, with which they are more familiar. This argument is specious, however, because many experiments reveal that people are quite capable of distinguishing between one-shots and repeated games, and cooperate much more in the latter than in the former.

                So this book will not win any awards for social theory, but it is deep and rich with highly insightful descriptions and analysis of human behavior under conditions where trust and reciprocity increase well being. The Russell Sage foundation, which underwrote the research and preparation of the volume, is to be commended for a job well done.

                An excellent collection of thoughful review articles on patterns of ancient trade and exchange. There are nine chapters, covering the Chaco Anasazi (F. Mathien), Northern Anasazi (E. Blinman & C.D. Wilson), Hohokam (R. McGuire), marine shell exchange in N. Mexico and the SW (R. Bradley), Mesoamerican turquoise (P. Weigand & G. Harbottle), Mexico (R. Santley & C. Pool), lowland Maya (P. McAnany), and southern Central America (J. Hoopes). The introductory chapter by Baugh and Ericson provides a good overview of relevant archaeological theory.

At one level, the book discusses the kinds of market structures that would be viable under different socioeconomic conditions. At another level, the analysis questions monolithic approaches to applied economic analysis and policy based on what works under existing conditions. To illustrate the applicability of theoretical modeling, the authors consider two policy areas: economic recovery from a major societal disaster and economic development. The book will be of particular interest to students of applied economics, but it will also be of interest to those concerned with social ecology, economy and society, economic history, economic anthropology, applied sociology, and developmental studies. It will be especially valuable to scholars in Eastern European and socialist economic systems that are currently seeking to establish market economies.

                    Imagine three authors looking at the very basis for a market system of exchange, and finding agreement in sociological, anthropological, and economic literature in defining a universe of exchange structures.

                    Making Markets is not this sort of popularized literature, but an original intellectual discourse on the foundations of the market systems we take for granted. It dispells many of the popular myths of market systems by identifying the true underlying principles at work.

                    The authors had originally expressed their "perspective" in a technical report "Markets, Distribution, and Exchange after Societal Cataclysm;" a study on recovery scenarios of the United States economy after a nuclear conflict. The authors must have written Making Markets in recognition of the far more reaching contribution of their study than the immediate thesis at hand.

                    Making Markets does not discuss nuclear conflict. It focuses on the systems of exchange as exemplified by scenarios that are typical in different parts of the world: 1) the Western "business as usual" model, 2) the third world "wasteland," 3) developing nations "fat of the land", and 4) the "bureaucratic nightmare" of the former socialist states.

                    The text is detailed, and authoratative, with references to both classical and contemporary economic literature. A model of market systems is presented prior to the functionings of the four scenarios that exemplify the elements of this framework. Its lessons are timeless and fundamental. In a word, this is a "classical" work in our time.

                    As an appraiser that had a career discerning value from economic anamolies, this is the sort of insight required for comprehending market problems and supporting the analytical approach. Imagine an indication of value for public property with uncertain title in terms exceptional of precuniary units (i.e., money). This is the sort of real problems that existed with property after the disestablishment of the Soviet Union. Understanding the fundamentals of Making Markets reveals the analytical solution to these sort of economic problems inherent to massive change.

                            This is a book that I read in one evening, that literally pointed out for me the difference between leadership and managers. You cannot lead if you are too busy trying to manage. I also never realized that leadership is situational, and the the definition of leadership is different for each person and each situation. This book clarifies those points, and you have to pass it on to a friend or another leader in your life!

                            This is the story of Mark and his journey from management into leadership, mentored by his boss Patricia. Sam the old man and founder of the group of companies that Mark works for also provides some good tips. Written in a simple narrative style, this small book is actually packed with lots of practical guidance on leadership. Are you ready to lead ? is a question that kick starts the story of Mark's test on leadership to revive a sinking plant, and is also the most appropriate title for this book.

                            The distinction between management and leadership is brought out so clearly and one can take this definition to improve competencies on both. Leadership is about people who have heads and hearts. This book is a story where leadership takes over when management falters.

                            When I finished the book, I got a feeling that the last few chapters could have been little more detailed and also that Mark, a professional manager at times appears to be a school kid asking his teacher for help, too often. Mark has since graduated, with honors. Ready to read ?

IT managers will commonly spend seventy per cent of their time on making the client-supplier relationship work, while thirty per cent of their time will focus on the contract, personnel, and problem issues. Longitudinal research into Xerox's global, British Aerospace's total,ESSO's selective, British Petroleum's alliance, and the UK Inland Revenue's public sector outsourcing deals highlights relationship practices and recurring post-contract management issues that demand careful attention and management. By use of novel cliebt-supplier relationship framework developed from transaction cost, relational contract, nad interorganisational relationship theory, the authors carefully amalyse these five longitudinal case studies and identify what the key dimensions of an outsourcing relationship are.
