    Book Description

In 1995 PAHO launched a project to address violence against women in Central America. Utilizing an integrated approach that calls for action at three levels—health and other sectors, the community, and national policy development—by the end of 2002 more than 150 community networks in 10 Latin American countries had been formed. This book highlights the results of the project's recent evaluation and includes numerous insights by health workers, schoolteachers, police and court officials, women's advocates, and other community leaders regarding the effectiveness of the project's approach. Most revealing of all, however, is the voices of the women themselves, as they describe living with violence and the community's response to their needs.

        Book Description

Modeling Uncertainty: An Examination of Stochastic Theory, Methods, and Applications, is a volume undertaken by the friends and colleagues of Sid Yakowitz in his honor. Fifty internionally known scholars have collectively contributed 30 papers on modeling uncertainty to this volume. Each of these papers was carefully reviewed and in the majority of cases the original submission was revised before being accepted for publication in the book. The papers cover a great variety of topics in probability, statistics, economics, stochastic optimization, control theory, regression analysis, simulation, stochastic programming, Markov decision process, application in the HIV context, and others. There are papers with a theoretical emphasis and others that focus on applications. A number of papers survey the work in a particular area and in a few papers the authors present their personal view of a topic. It is a book with a considerable number of expository articles, which are accessible to a nonexpert - a graduate student in mathematics, statistics, engineering, and economics departments, or just anyone with some mathematical background who is interested in a preliminary exposition of a particular topic. Many of the papers present the state of the art of a specific area or represent original contributions which advance the present state of knowledge. In sum, it is a book of considerable interest to a broad range of academic researchers and students of stochastic systems.

                            Book Description

Let's get real. All of the touchy-feely leadership stuff of the last decade has not really served you nor many others in management very well. Now that downsizing has taken its toll, reality is setting in. Fortunately, you lived through downsizing, but now that it's hopefully over, and you're one of the survivors, you're expected to do more with less. It's called productivity, and while there's no doubt increased productivity will beat the competition, touchy-feeling is definitely not the way to get it.

This book will make the goal of increased productivity possible. Yet it doesn't suggest returning to the old dictatorial style of management. It's all about process based leadership. Process based leadership makes sure you don't subconsciously play favorites. Process based leadership insures that everyone accepts accountability, and that each person on your team pulls his or her own weight. Because empowered team leaders like you can end up doing all the team's work if you don't have a process like this one in place.

Buried Alive! explains a new management system the authors call process based leadership (PBL), which relies on non-negotiable processes to drive focus, urgency and accountability throughout an organization. These non-negotiable processes lead empowered team leaders out of their personal "management dumpsters" and provide them with tangible and auditable systems to insure ongoing business success.

Establishing non-negotiables is step number one. Once these clear ground rules are laid, a leader can build the steps needed to climb out of the dumpster. The first step is communication, which must be face to face. People need to know what's going on and putting it in an e-mail or memo simply won't do. Next is an auditable business focus process using "business scorecards.î These scorecards create urgency, focus and accountability among team members because they are reviewed monthly. The third step is to get everyone to accept accountability. Managers often are at a loss to find a way to do this. But with PBL, it's part of the process. What we called "action registers" are used that go into a team workbook. These record decisions made, who is to take action, and when the action is to be completed. They have the effect of lighting a fire under folks. Fifth is to establish and elevate everyone's expectations. Leaders must tell their empowered team what's expected of them. The team needs to say what they expect of the leader, and of one another. These expectations must be brought out into the open and written down. They become the team's ground rules.

Process based leadership as revealed in this book is a proven system already at work in a number of very successful organizations. Harley-Davidson, Michelin, Boeing, General Mills, O'Hare Airport, and the Department of Defense are just a few. So why wait? Order a copy today and start your climb out of that management dumpster.

I was blown away. This easy-to-read book is a salvation and a demonstration that complicated problems sometimes only require simple answers. The concepts that are described reaffirm your intuition and gently challenge your comfort zone as a manager. I think that if you're willing to be open to change, the changes that are laid out within Buried Alive! are impactful and will achieve nearly immediate results. Outstanding concepts, simple to understand, easy to implement. I'm very impressed and will recommend the book to anyone who wants to improve their organization from top down or bottom up.

                              Book Description

In IEconomic Careers, fourteen senior economists describe their early introduction to the study of economics and their contribution to the development of academic economics in Britain. With experience covering a period from the mid-1920s to the late 1960s, many of the contributors not only provide an insight into the role of university disciplines in the education system, but describe their experience in wartime administration or as government advisors. The result of these interviews is a fascinating picture of the changing shape and role of economics in the twentieth century.

                                      Book Description

This text addresses the question of public service in the context of privatization, with specific reference to the water industry. The notion of public service is examined both theoretically and historically, thereby placing the development of the public utilities in a broader frame than usual. The way in which public services are part of a complicated state relation that has developed throughout the 20th century is systematically investigated, opening up a series of questions of direct relevance for current debates about public ownership and nationalization.

                                            Book Description

The water and power industries, including the most capital-intensive producers of goods and services in our economy, are exposed to financial risks of staggering proportions. With projects that are routinely large and require long-term planning, and with demand and supply often highly volatile, costs regularly defy prediction. Still, there has been little explicit analysis of financial risk in the water and power industries. In this work, C. Vaughan Jones provides a comprehensive discussion of financial risk and risk analysis for these utilities. Writing in clear, straightforward language, he explores the application of risk analysis to construction projects, rate-setting and price effects, and customer characteristics. In developing a method for evaluating risk, Jones brings together material from business, engineering, economics, demography, probability theory, computer simulation, and policy studies. The materials are organized around risk factors affecting costs and revenues, and support a practical analysis with spreadsheet and simulation examples. Separate chapters present findings relating to the variability of construction costs, customer demand, and population growth. Together with qualitative information about risks, these chapters offer suggestions about quantitative representation of relevant patterns of variability of key risk sources. The techniques are integrated in simulation models dealing with contract risk, the evaluation of sinking funds and amortization schedules, and long-run capacity planning. The concluding chapters summarize major findings, consider issues of reliability and validation, and discuss the way in which this analysis can be applied to a variety of infrastructure investments. Finance and investment professionals and students in business and finance studies will find this work to be a useful reference tool. For public and academic libraries, it will represent a valuable addition to their collections.

                                                      * Essential reading for academics, policymakers, donor agencies, and activists involved in water privatization issues around the world

In recent years, as globalization and market liberalization have marched forward unabated, the global commons continue to be commodified and privatized at a rapid pace. In this global process, the ownership, sale, and supply of water are increasingly the flashpoints for debates and conflict over privatization, and nowhere is the debate more advanced or acute than southern Africa.
"The Age of Commodity" provides an overview on the debates over water privatization including a conceptual overview of water "privatization," how it relates to human rights, macro-economic policy and GATS, and how the debates are shaped by research methodologies. The book then presents case studies of important water privatization initiatives in the region, drawing out crucial themes common to water privatization debates around the world including corruption, gender equity, and donor conditionalities. This is book is powerful and necessary reading in our new age of commodity.

It is interesting in today's world to see books that remond us all the present and future value of intellectual capital. It is unfortunate the book does not focus on the de-valuation of intellectual capital when downsizing occurs in an organisation. The cost of replacing the intellectual capital does never figure in anual reports, it is 'hidden' by other standard costs, such as employee related costs, equipments, etc. We need to establish a quantification method, so that intellectual capital replacement is thoroughly investigated.
