5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend if you want to boost your business.......2004-12-01

This author has written two books about process assessment; this one looks at how process assessment can be used - in other words the practical aspects. It is written in a way that should appeal to businessmen and managers, as well as quality specialists and assessors.

The author starts by looking at the cost of poor quality - billions per year and writes 3 business cases for the use of process assessment - a good way to convince management to invest in quality activities such as process assessment. The author obviously has worked in highly capable organizations and provides the reader with some very thought provoking facts and questions. The first half of the book should appeal to any technical or management trained reader (e.g. MBAs) - explaining in a clear way how to use assessment results for determining the capability of your suppliers, or how to improve your own business. The author has provided various ways to improve the organization, both based upon the standard and upon methods he developed, including agile improvement methods and team-based methods. He addresses people aspects in several sections, including some cultural aspects in order to help readers who face organizational politics (and who doesn't sometime run into that!). He describes how various industries are using the standard - which throws light on how much the standard is being used in Europe. The book also has some very detailed help for process assessors in 3 chapters on planning, running and performing assessments.

The book presents information, using lots of illustrations and tables to ease the reader's understanding. Overall I found the approach very readable and the advice practical and very useful. It makes a good complement to the Reference book written by the same author.

I highly recommend this book to readers looking for help in improving their business.

                Book Description

Fortune magazine has called ISO 9000 "the hot new seal of quality...a standard of quality management, hugely popular in Europe, that is rapidly taking hold in the U.S. -- and around the globe." This step-by-step guide to ISO 9000, the first by a manager who has actually been through the certification process, will be invaluable to companies in a wide range of industries.

Developed from seminars Kenneth Arnold has presented to the top training and quality groups in the country, The Manager's Guide to ISO 9000 reflects the hands-on experience gained in successfully implementing certified programs. Drawing on his experience with the five-phase certification process, Arnold explains the twenty elements of the ISO 9000 standard, detailing both the intent and the requirements. He shows how ISO 9000 is a unique standard that can be implemented in almost any type of business without modification, one of the few that allows for innovation and progress.

As more and more companies such as Du Pont, General Electric, and Eastman Kodak urge suppliers to adopt the standard, an understanding of the standard's underlying principles becomes increasingly important. Arnold discusses these principles in detail and presents practical strategies for successful implementation, adaptable to a variety of industries -- from chemical manufacturing to banking. A quality evaluation form, a checklist for internal audits, and answers to thirty questions most often asked about certification are also provided as an added resource.

Whether a company's goal is the attainment of ISO 9000 certification, or whether it is the development of an improved quality system for better business practices, this book provides the information necessary to facilitate the process. It is required reading for all types of organizations in all varieties of industry seeking higher standards of quality.

This digital document is an article from SAM Advanced Management Journal, published by Society for the Advancement of Management on September 22, 1995. The length of the article is 4380 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

From the supplier: The Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was formed in 1946 to create a common set of standards for quality control practices in manufacturing, trade and communications. Its most popular contribution to the business world is the ISO 9000 Standards Series, a set of quality systems standards that any organization can use for quality management and quality assurance. Although ISO 9000 certification can be costly, many organizations are pursuing it because it promotes global trade, improves production and facilitates customer satisfaction. Companies that want to have ISO 9000 certification should simply register and convince third-party registrars that their quality system is acceptable and complies with ISO 9000 system guidelines and requirements. They should keep a quality manual because it is an important evidence of the company's quality system.

                            Book Description

Teams have been hailed as the workplace revolution of the decade. But what happens when the team's ``honeymoon'' ends? When troubles arise and interest wanes? Never fear, says teamwork troubleshooter and motivational speaker Ron Archer. In this book, Archer compiles the team remedies he has prescribed to the City of Coral Springs (Florida), Hillside Rehabilitation Hospitals, CHI Heist Corporation, and NFL football players to lead their faltering teams to success. On Teams features: several quick, easy-to-digest guidelines for improving teams, including the six-step empowerment initiative, the three phases of team implementation, and more; ways to successfully coach not manage a team to its highest potential; expert advice on avoiding team failure.

                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is not your average Flavor-of-the-Month "how-to" book.......1997-11-08

Ron Archer is a true believer, and it shows. For all the hucksters peddling their own versions of convivial redemption in the workplace, occasionally the real McCoy comes along.

Mr. Archer lays out the challenges awaiting team-directed managers with evangelistic fervor and delphic clarity. It's the next best thing to sitting around the author's den.

                              Book Description

In the decades before 1914, the City of London was the premier international financial centre. However, this position was not long maintained, other industrial nations quickly and effectively challenged the influence of Britain, and following the disruption of the world markets caused by World War I and the Great Depression of the 1930s, international hegemony slipped away for ever. The relationship of bankers and industrialists has often been cited as a key factor in this decline. Critics of the banks claim that, even before World War I, there were serious deficiencies in the financial provision provided by banks to the domestic industrial sector, and that these deficiencies handicapped Britain's competitive advantage in world markets, leading to the decline of their influence and power. This book examines these claims, and bringing to bear important new data that presents the debate in a novel and revealing framework, expounds an economic rationale for historical bank behaviour. Using a rich source of contemporary records, it presents a series of micro-economic studies into commercial bank assets and liabilities, financial crises, bank mergers, the professionalization of banking, the organization and conduct of the industrial loan business, and the nature of bank support given to industrial clients. The result is a new, authoritative interpretation of bank-industry relations in the half-century before World War I.

4 out of 5 stars How global is advertising?.......2000-08-03

A very interesting book, written by many authors that have lots of experience in different fields/countries. It all comes down to the questions "how global or local shall we advertise?", "what are the success factors for global advertising?" and "how global are our consumers?". There is no black and white, but the book gives tons of examples, hints and suggestions about the different levels of grey, how they can lead to success or failure. Overall I can recommend the book, although it will not give you the simple answer you are looking for, simply because there is no simple answer.

                                      Book Description

This text offers a comprehensive and original introduction to organization theory and is designed to provide an even handed, balanced appreciation of the different perspectives that have contributed to our knowledge about organizations. The text's approach is pluralist, reflecting the diverse nature of organizational theory as a field of study influenced by thinkers from a variety of academic disciplines. Specifically, perspectives described as `modern', `symbolic-interpretive' and `postmodern' frame the analysis. Students are encouraged to `adopt' these perspectives to expand their own view and to enhance their understanding. A key question addressed throughout the text is the nature of the relationship between organizational theories and the reality these theories describe. Organization Theory is in three parts: * Part 1 introduces the multi-perspective approach * Part 2 explores the ways in which organizations are analysed - as entities within an environment; as subjects of strategic action; as technologies; as social structures; as cultures; and as physical structures * Part 3 covers topics of central importance in organizational theory including decision-making, power, conflict, control and change within organizations. To aid learning the text offers many diagrammatical and conceptual models and each chapter includes a summary, a list of key terms and pointers to further reading.

I'm not sure how attention grabbing org theory can be, but this book was very informative and understandable. The chapters are a nice size, and the summaries are useful.

Hatch writes in a consise and informative manner. It is not the type of writing that you wonder what you just read. Her writing holds the reader's interest by keeping her style uncomplicated in word and thought. The breath of orgainzational information is outstanding and the depth of each topic seems to be at a level to keep you reading but not overloaded and bored. Highly recommended for org research.

5 out of 5 stars How to look at organizations?.......2000-10-24

The book is an academic level state-of-the-art of organization theory. Definitely the best contemporary book in the field - suitable for all the students, but also for academics and practitioners. It covers both historical and current issues. Though pretty comprehesive, still comprehendable. In lay man language Hatch writes about most difficult issues of organization theory - structure, environment, culture, etc. are all covered, usually with some alternative perspectives (e.g. 'organizational culture' is described also from postmodern and symbolic perspectives, current books and papers are referred etc.).

                                      Book Description

Organization Theory offers a clear and comprehensive introduction to the study of organizations and organizing processes. It encourages an even-handed appreciation of the different perspectives contributing to our knowledge of organizations and challenges readers to broaden their intellectual reach. Organization Theory is in three parts: BL Part I introduces the multi-perspective approach. BL Part II presents many ways in which organizations can be analyzed - as entities within an environment, as social structures, technologies, cultures and physical structures, and as the products of power and political processes. BL Part III explores applications of organization theory to the practical matters of organizational design and change, and introduces the latest perspectives on the horizons of organization theory, including complex adaptive systems, organizational identity theory, critical realism, network theory, aesthetics, and organizational learning. Online Resource Centre For lecturers: PowerPoint slides, exam questions, teachig suggestions, a discussion forum, case studies and exercises with instructor's notes. For Students: annotated web links, and discussion questions.

This book is very readable. Some of the books and papers on organizational theory are so dense that they are practically unreadable. This one effectively conveys the information the author wants you to understand. This is not a pointless book. I can't say that about most of the others I've had to read on organizational theory.

This book is required reading for a graduate OD course I completed this summer. Using the organizational theory perspectives of modernist, symbolic and post modernist, the author carefully guides and builds on theories that support these perspectives. In the end, it give professional change experts a foundation for recommendations. I will continue to use this book as a reference for my internal and external OD/OT work.

A book writen in a German style, very well structured. Exemples only when you need them, not a book of case studies but withot help.
The single bad thing is that even if the translator tryed his best, it is in finaly a German -English language, so quite hard to red it sometimes.
But if you want to understand a lot about BPR, you can count on it. It is not a "learn bpr in 24 hours" or a beginer's book.
