No More Darn Buzzwords: Keys To Successful Organized Change by David Chaudron (a Managing Partner of Organized Change Consultancy) is a quite practical and accessible instructional and informational guide for business and organizational planning that warns against overuse of "canned" or pre-prepared approaches and buzzwords, so frequently used by corporate managers when attempting to squeeze their unique structure into a mass-produced stratagem that may not be effectively tailored for their own needs. Individual chapters succinctly address how to develop and implement plans that are geared specifically to what one's individual business requires, successful assessment and measurement, facilitating teamwork, improving training methods, and much, much more. No More Darn Buzzwords is strongly recommended as being an excellent and advantageous resource.

              Book Description

Managing Socialism challenges the theoretical underpinnings of Cuban Studies--the elite/mass perspective. It offers a major reinterpretation of the revolutionary process which focuses on the rise and fall of different types of social actors at the intermediate level of Cuban society. Frank Fitzgerald identifies intermediate level types: the prerevolutionary middle class; the old cadres who in the 1960s attained administrative positions with political credentials; and the new professionals who primarily since 1970 enter these same occupations on the basis of education. Fitzgerald focuses on the transitions from one type to the next and uncovers conflict/cooperation patterns between the three strata of Cuban society. His study offers new insight into the early exodus from Cuba, the problem of scarce skills, and Cuba's educational expansion. Managing Socialism's previously unexplored subject matter and its challenging theoretical approach make it required reading. Focusing on the relationship between social stratification and politics broadly conceived, Fitzgerald examines major changes at the intermediate level of Cuban society resulting from and in turn influencing the Cuban revolutionary process. Thereby dismissing the elite/mass perspective theory, Fitzgerald begins his analysis with an examination of factors leading to the scarcity and misallocation of skills in the 1960s. Leadership responses to this problem are then analyzed as important links to the crisis of 1970 and the emergence of new professionals. The post 1970 rectification process is explored and a study conducted of the decline of the old cadres and rise of the new professionals. A chapter is then given to the problem of bureaucratic centralism and typical patterns of conflict and cooperation between social types. A discussion of the 1986 rectification campaign and a summary of major findings conclude Fitzgerald's provocative work.

                Book Description

Technology Commercialization: DEA and Related Analytical Methods for Evaluating The Use and Implementation of Technical Innovation examines both general Research & Development commercialization and targeted new product innovation. New product development is a major occupation of the technical sector of the global economy and is viewed in many ways as a means of economic stability for a business, an industry, and a country. The heart of the book is a detailing of the analytical methods-with special, but not exclusive emphasis on DEA methods-for evaluating and ranking the most promising R & D and technical innovation being developed. The sponsors of the research and development may involve universities, countries, industries, and corporations-all of these sources are covered in the book. In addition, the trade-off of environmental problems vis-à-vis new product development is discussed in a section of the book.

Sten Thore (editor and author) has woven together the chapter contributions by a strong group of international researchers into a book that has characteristics of both a monograph and a unified edited volume of well-written papers in DEA, technology evaluation, R&D, and environmental economics. The book's emphasis on methods for evaluative ranking the multiple dimensions of research and development makes the book useful for a wide audience of researchers, students, and practitioners. Finally, the use of DEA as an evaluation method for product innovation is an important new development in the field of R&D commercialization.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars Mintzberg's Linchpin.......2007-02-19

Mintzberg would have to be one of the most astute writers on business matters I have ever read. Although there are many other fine authors, Mintzberg seems to stand in a class of his own when it comes to discussions of strategy and organisation, and as I am finding out: business education and practical management.

I was awed by his books Strategy Safari and The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning, but, Structure in Fives (Sin5's) (or the more academically oriented reference text from which it derives: 'The Structuring of Organizations') is, arguably, his finest work.

To understand some of where Mintzberg's views in his later works come from, Structure in Fives is the book to read (although I understand he will eventually be putting out an update called Structure in 7's, with the extra 2 "structures" already alluded to in other Mintzberg works).

The core theme of the book is that any organisation is defined by the interaction of two key parameters: the division of labour and the means by which that division of labour is coordinated. An analysis of these interactions result in the discovery of 5 "ideal" organisational configurations which seem to be the building blocks used to "synthesise" all real organisations.

For me, the true power of Mintzberg's logic is reflected, in particular, in two areas, amongst others:

                1. He creates a diagramatic representation of an organisation which has been repeated in many of Mintzberg's subsequent works. Those who think that the diagram was of artistic value alone will be pleased to read a logical explanation of the forces which create the structure and how that structure is modified as the forces change their relative contributions. Whatever artistry there is, it is about painting the natural rhythm of logic applied to organisations.

                2. The integral relationship between structure and strategy is elucidated with a logic which is difficult to assail. Mintzberg helps you understand that the argument about what follows what: structure or strategy, is a barren one. They are so intertwined, they are indeed two sides of the same coin. To speak about strategy IS to speak about structure, and vice-versa; one cannot exist without the other.

It is a pity I read Strategy Safari and The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning before I read Sin5's. Reading Sin5's first clarifies everything. Indeed, I cannot recommend reading any of Mintzberg's works (on organisation or strategy) without reading Sin5's first (or its more academic precursor). There are quite a few important areas of explanation in Sin5's which are lost in later works as they try to convey the original ideas in summary.

Even more importantly, reading Sin5's will help you understand any other authors' works on organisation and strategy. Sin5's is, arguably, the current benchmark for clarity and depth against which all others are measured - which says a lot given how long ago it was written. None that I am aware of have come close to matching Mintzberg ... yet.

                Excellent. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book that give good insight in how companies work.......1999-03-26

When you have read this very practice book, you can see how organisations work, were the weaknesses en strengths are in the company en how you can give advise to solve the problems.

1 out of 5 stars Good 19 Articles but not a good Book!.......2003-06-15

When you buy a book, you expect to read a book that has integrated chapters with smooth flow from one chapter to another. Unfortunately, this book is nothing but 18 articles written by 18 different authors or more and collected under one thing called book. Articles include: Intranet in US Government, Purchase decision, Using spreadsheets as a DSS, IT for SME, Voting solutions in government, IT acceleration in china, etc.!!

Unless you're looking for such articles, I recommend you to save your time and money by not buying this book.
It's really difficult to find a good book for Managing IT. ...

                        Book Description

Despite roughly 30 years of experience with growth management programs, which are basically land-use planning tools, most U.S. communities do not plan for how best to limit or manage rapid growth; in fact, most communities do not plan at all. In the absence of planning, land-use boards, regulators, and other governing bodies simply react to initiatives from the private sector. The result is predictably haphazard and does not allow communities to achieve such goals as protecting quality of life, attracting certain types of businesses while discouraging others, conserving wildlife or preserving open spaces, and so forth. In contrast, planning by managing growth can help a town or city achieve any number of goals. But it is a complex task. This book brings the benefit of state and local experiences wtih growth management to researchers, students, and particularly practitioners who seek guidance in these matters. Kelly provides a much-needed context from which any community can answer the following questions:
                      • Does growth management work?
                      • Is it appropriate for our community and the particular problems we are trying to address?
                      • Is one type of growth management program more appropriate than another for our community?
                      • Will the program in question have undesirable (or desirable) side effects?
                      • What are the likely effects of adopting no growth management program at all?
                      • This work is invaluable for the citizen volunteers who sit on land-use boards, including planning and zoning commissions and conservation commissions and inland wetlands agencies. In addition, it can aid mayors, city managers, and city councils in interviewing and selecting candidates for town planner. in question have undesirable

                          Book Description

Recent years have witnessed a revolution in the way economies work. The world has moved away from centralized governments and economies, toward decentralized governments and market-driven economies. A pragmatic, non-ideological approach to mixed economic systems is becoming the order of the day, blurring the lines between public and private, and referred to here as the "economy without walls." The purpose of Hamlin and Lyons' new work is to synthesize an understanding of the economy without walls, distill the implications of this economy for local communities, and apply knowledge of those implications to guiding communities' development. The book assumes that the use of intersectoral partnerships is an important part of any urban or regional development strategy. It systematically describes such partnerships, including the philosophical foundations of this approach and the financial and non-financial activities used to implement it. The work then discusses trends in the theory and practice of local community management that result from this economic restructuring. The implications of the "economy without walls" cannot be ignored if urban planners and related professionals are to be effective in the new worldwide environment. This book will be a must-read for scholars, students, and practitioners in urban planning, economic development, and public administration.

                              Book Description

In Managing "Modernity," Rudra Sil examines how institution-builders respond to the competing influences of institutional models and inherited social legacies as they attempt to generate and sustain authority in late-industrializing societies. Through a historical and comparative study of large-scale enterprises in Japan and Russia, the book examines the impact of different institution-building strategies on managerial authority, invoking the experience of postwar Japan to highlight the benefits of a syncretic approach that selectively integrates adaptable features of borrowed institutions with portable norms inherited from preexisting communities.
Managing "Modernity" engages a variety of intellectual perspectives in the social sciences. The theoretical approach represents a conscious effort to overcome the contentious debates in political science and sociology among proponents of historical institutionalism, cultural analysis, and rational-choice theory. The substantive argument draws on, and partially integrates, concepts and findings from comparative politics, economic sociology, industrial relations, organization theory, business management, and the political economy of Japan and Russia.
In light of ongoing debates over the significance and impact of "globalization," the eclectic and integrative approach in Managing "Modernity" offers a fresh and provocative contribution that will interest scholars and graduate students across a variety of disciplines and subfields. It offers compelling insights to anyone generally concerned with the social forces that facilitate or hinder the diffusion of ideas and institutions across national boundaries.
Rudra Sil is Janice and Julian Bers Assistant Professor in the Social Sciences, Department of Political Science, University of Pennsylvania.

                                  Book Description

Urban managers continue to do what they have done for decades: manage conflict, adapt to shifting demographics, balance their own source funds with intergovernmental revenues, respond to federal and state mandates, negotiate with other localities in their same metropolitan area, and deliver goods and services. But managers today are confronted with new challenges in what has become "fend for yourself" federalism. City executives must do more with less while at the same time figure out ways to harness the power of new technologies and react to a globalized world and economy. It is no wonder then that even great managers can fail at urban administration. To succeed, they must understand the nature of community values, the pitfalls of bureaucratic inertia, and the craft of leadership--that is, the politics of urban management.

Morgan, England, and Pelissero offer a forward-looking account of this new urban management environment. In a comprehensive update, the authors have reorganized the book's structure to better fit the challenges facing today's cities, and make even greater use of systems theory as an analytic framework. Featuring discussions of the New Public Management model, the impacts of globalization, changes in service delivery, urban planning, economic development, and program evaluation, they discuss key productivity enhancements that emphasize results and accountability. The authors then focus on the impact of citizen participation, e-government, the events of 9/11, and intergovernmental relations as examples of significant environmental factors that impinge on the management of modern cities. In addition, every case study in the book is brand new and many include information on "Connecting to the Internet" and "Profiles of Urban Practitioners and Scholars."

Services - schools, communications, health, and commercial facilities - are an integral part of the economic, social, and cultural life of rural areas. Their accessibility and quality are a significant factor in the development of the countryside. This survey describes new strategies being implemented in OECD countries to facilitate the emergence of services specifically suited to the new demands of rural areas.
