      Book Description

This book draws on a survey by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that sets out to identify innovation and good practice in school management in nine of the world's most industrialised countries: Belgium, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and the USA. The issues are explored with regard to the underlying question- to what extent can school leaders fulfill today's requirements as a semi-autonomous manager, instructional leader, and developer of human resources?

        Book Description

This book attempts to synthesize contemporary research on school-to-work transitions from a number of different disciplines in the social sciences, including economics, industrial relations, sociology and education. It does this in a way which should be comprehensible to education and training practitioners, applied economists and sociologists, advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in the aforementioned disciplines and civil servants concerned with education, training and employment issues. Following this brief introduction, the book is structured into three main parts. Part I is concerned mainly with descriptive analyses and draws on recent experiences of the school-to-work transition, reform ideas, policy successes and failures in the United States, Sweden and Switzerland.

Part II consists mainly of applied work and outlines the crucial role of, amongst other things, formal qualifications and on-the-job work experience in the United Kingdom, Germany and Norway. One chapter spreads the net more widely and undertakes a broader analysis to examine the link between formal qualifications and employment, whilst the other two chapters focus on particular educational levels, i.e. vocational training and higher education, respectively. The final part of the book takes a closer look at the role education and training can play to overcome the problems of unemployment and social exclusion. These chapters highlight the social policy angle of education and training by drawing on empirical material from the Netherlands, Finland and Northern Ireland. Particular issues of concern include educational mismatch, long-term marginalisation and social exclusion on the grounds of economic, social and religious equality.

        Book Description

Following in the successful vein of Managing for the Future (1992) and Managing in a Time of Great Change (1995), the incomparable Peter Drucker is back with fresh thoughts, insights, and knowledge about the ever-changing business society around us and the ever-expanding management roles required of us all-chiefs, executives, managers, and knowledge workers alike. Two main themes are explored in many of the chapters in Managing in the Next Society: the rapidly expanding information shock wave that had its Internet Big Bang as recently as 1995; and the changing shape of our society to come-six major trends that are rapidly transforming our world into what Peter Drucker calls The Next Society.AUTHORBIO: From his first book, The End of Economic Man (1939), to this his most recent, Peter F. Drucker has been hailed in the United States and abroad as the seminal thinker, writer, and lecturer of our time on the twentieth-century business organization in all its for-profit and non-profit guises and forms. The recipient of many awards and honorary degrees, Mr. Drucker since 1971 has been Clarke Professor of Social Sciences at Claremont Graduate School in California as well as a frequent editorial page contributer to The Wall Street Journal.Earlier he taught at Bennington, Sarah Lawrence, and New York University.Mr. Drucker and his wife, Doris, live in Claremont, California.

3 out of 5 stars Milking the "Drucker" Cow! .......2007-05-10

Peter Drucker was the father of the post war business revolution. And his every books will stand the test of time as he shaped modern business practises from Watson to Ford to Gates. With due respect, this book is just a reflection of the genius who still sparkles sporadically with his genius thoughts and this book is mediocre..by the standards that Drucker set in his haydays...

A compilation of articles and Interviews, each chapters and sections have no relationship to the title of the book and excessive importance given to Japan and hardly any reference to India and China makes it irrelevant..And US's foreign policy messups /Sep11 did not exist then.Yet think about his predictions on Japan on many fronts ( ex:Bureacracy) and replace Japan with India/China and you have the answer..

Skip this book and go on to other Drucker's book written 25 or 30 years earlier when he was still relatively young.Read Ram Charan, Prahalad's book for latest business wisdom as well

2 out of 5 stars Collection of Exerpts.......2006-11-14

This book is an interesting collection of chapters, interviews and ideas by Drucker. There are a handful of good ideas, but as a whole, the book is disjointed and no clear point or argument is raised. While it is good fodder for quotes, don't expect to emerge with any great ideas or new perspectives.

5 out of 5 stars The book is about our future, as it is clearly seen by a brilliant visionary.......2005-11-18

In this book, Peter F. Drucker provided his assessment of social, economic, and organizational developments of the near future. It might be tempting to discount this important work as just another set of predictions. Yet, coming from Drucker, the insights contained in this book are realities rather than possibilities. The book is about our future, as it is clearly seen by a brilliant visionary-the future, which is described to us with the patience and repetition of a great teacher, so we can internalize and begin to act on its implications even before the rest of us are able to distinguish its features.

4 out of 5 stars The grimm perspectives for Latin America.......2004-05-11

What makes me think deeply from this book is the criticism Mr. Drucker writes about the first world modern states. According to his point of view, they are already lagged in the race for being fitted to the new society and the social changes coming up from the new technological wave. If this is the present situation of the best national states, what could we say about the perspectives of the latin american nation-states?.

The globalization creates ties among many firms and people who don't have their national states as a major intermediation. But the other face of the same process is the fragmentation that happens inside the countries. Mr. Drucker does not outline ideas about the fragmentation process, the other side of the coin, the shadow of the globalization process. This reality does not include all people. The exclusion of some from the benefits of the new model of creation of wealth has political consequences. In the fisrt world, with their bureaucracies, long stablished political parties and rich welfare-states, it will be possible the handling of all undesirable consequences of globalization. With the political ground stable enough, the first world should be able to continue allocating its resources, public and private, well, in an ever changing environment. But what about the latin american nation-states?, they don't have political systems with sufficient legitimacy to produce major consensus and improve the performace of the public policies, at the same time that petty private interests are hold back. And, in addition, they lack the financial resources that come from a fully industrialized economy to face the same kind of problems, but at a higher scale.

I recommend this book to every top latin american politican. The future of business and society will depend more than ever on good enough national states and public policies.Every latin american political elite has the opportunity to show how useful they are. And please, don't blame markets, nor selfish and shy investors, neither unfair trade policies. We know that there are some troubles about them, but they are not as important as the flaws of our national states.

3 out of 5 stars Good, solid book........2004-04-22

This book is the second full text that I have read from Drucker. During my MBA days I was also exposed to/emersed in many of his articles and theories. I have always found him to be insightful and thought provoking. For some reason, particularly with this text, I found his style and delivery to be long-winded and somewhat arrogant. Reading between the lines, his message is clear -- we are at the beginning of the revolution...there is so much more to come.

Good book -- a step above most authors. Middle of the road for Drucker however.

A comprehensive code for homebuilding, this book brings together all building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical provisions for one- and two-family residences. I was shocked to recieve the Code book at least two weeks before I expected it and it was in perfect shape. The service is excellent and I could not be happier with the material.

                  4 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2006-10-06

I liked the fonts used quite a bit, but the story was slow at times. There was almost no charicter development and the plotlines were dated. Still, the surprise ending does what it intends.

3 out of 5 stars Codes are Codes but Your Service is the Best.......2006-07-17

IRC Codes are as the say "standard". It is good to have a single code book for residential building. However, the ability to go to one location, click on what I need when I need it, and have it delivered at a reasonable price where I need it...is the best.

                  5 out of 5 stars Building Code - 2003.......2006-03-14

Very good reference book for understanding the details of what the building inspector is using for acceptance criteria. Not for the novice, unless you have a good dictionary available. It does leave some of the minute details in the referenced industry standards (National Electric Code, ANSI standards, etc.). Provdes an excellent way to communicate specifics with the general contractor/builder.

3 out of 5 stars Would you like to purchase the corrections supplement, too?.......2006-02-11

Ask yourself why you want your own code book. Do you want instant access to the same information as your city building inspector?
I have a fourth printing (March 2004) and have found dozens of mistakes, items where my code book differs from the one adopted by my state and city, the first printing (January 2003). You would think that given the stated goal of the building code to standardize building practice, that the ICC would either be more careful, or they would put corrections in the public domain. For sure, you shouldn't have to proof the copy and then go looking for corrections. If you want a compendium of all of the known mistakes in all of the ICC code books, you can purchase the bound volume for an additional $13 directly from them. You just have to then figure out which changes go with your edition. It's too bad the ICC doesn't make the corrections edition available at Amazon so that it can be sold "Better Together". My advice? Find out what edition your city uses and get that, it's probably the first printing. If you can't get the same book, wait a couple of years for your city to adopt the next new code (2006?, 2009?) and get a first printing. That way you can borrow your building inspectors' corrections.

                                      Book Description

For the past century, economic analysis has been wedded to the idea of equilibrium, in spite of the evident fact that most economic relationships are in flux. The theory of transformational growth in this work replaces equilibrium with history. The role of the market is not to allocate resources, but to generate innovations, which are "selected" by competition in an evolutionary process. These innovations in turn change the way markets work and how they adjust, thus creating new problems and new kinds of pressures to innovate. The core relationships provide the foundations for a theory of monetary circulation, which makes possible a revised Keynesian approach, based on Classical foundations.

3 out of 5 stars Nell believes Keynes was a poor mathematician by 1927........2005-04-01

The goal of this book by E.Nell(N)is to write a new general theory of macroeconomics with clearly defined non neoclassical microeconomic foundations based on a new view of what the equilibrating mechanism in the economy is.Nell argues that relative market prices(and a neoclassical anaysis relying on marginal product, cost and utility functions)have no substantial role to play.Instead, the equilibrating mechanism comes into play as society attempts to deal with and coordinate a continuing series of technological innovations and changes over time. The dynamic interplay that occurs in society and between different sectors of the economy, like the consumption and investment goods sectors, creates both positive and negative feedback effects that generate changes in the structure of the economy over time. These changes result in changes in the basic structure of society. This general overview is one with which the reviewer has some agreement with. However,it is not necessary or correct to argue that neoclassical price theory has no use or valid or sound application. It has to play second fiddle to the first fiddle of technological change and innovation,as argued by both Schumpeter and Keynes. It is in Nell's dismissal of Keynes's theory of effective demand that Nell drops the ball , fumbles, and never recovers.Unfortunately,Nell simply accepts as the gospel truth the canards told to him by Richard Kahn and Joan Robinson about Keynes being a poor mathematician by 1927 who never mastered microeconomic theory and was thus unable to formalize his theory of effective demand, based on aggregate demand functions and aggregate supply functions(and not the single aggregate demand and supply function postulated by Nell). This is most evident whenever Nell discusses Keynes's modeling(Nell,1998,pp.373,449-453,545-557,613-622,especially pp.618-621).Nell examines only chapter 3 of the GT and ignores Keynes's analysis in chapters 19,20,21 and the appendix to chapter 19 .Any competent mathematician will be able to derive Keynes's major result, which was that w/p= mpl/(mpc+mpi).Unless mpc +mpi =1,a series of multiple equilibria can result that results in some level of involuntary unemployment. The single equilibrium of neoclassical theory requires that mpc+mpi =1,where w/p= the real wage, mpl= the marginal product of labor ,and mpc and mpi equal the marginal propensities to spend on consumption and investment goods, respectively.Nell is not likely to ever succeed in his search for a new general theory until he realizes that Keynes's analysis,as given above, applies to both the short run and the long run(i.e.,both the static and the dynamic production possibilities curves).

Business writer Stuart Crainer's The Ultimate Business Library: 50 Books That Shaped Management Thinking offers an excellent overview of some of the most significant books ever written on the art of management. The selections--alphabetically from Igor Ansoff to Max Weber, and chronologically from 500 B.C. to 1994--are books Crainer feels have the greatest impact on management thought and practice. His insightful summaries of each work, which include Robert Townsend's Up the Organization, Henry Ford's My Life and Work, and Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline, are preceded by a bio of the author and a commentary by London Business School professor Gary Hamel.

                                          Book Description

Many people can't find the time to read the books of major business thinkers. But managers and others in business do need to be knowledgeable about important ideas if they want to keep their careers on track and make worthwhile contributions to their companies. This unique book provides exactly the help they need, with:

** summaries of 50 influential business books, from 'The Art of War' to 'The Fifth Discipline,' with stops at Dale Carnegie, Peter Drucker, W. Edwards Deming, Tom Peters, Philip Kotler, Charles Handy, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, and others along the way
** commentary on each book by Gary Hamel (a major business thinker himself!)
** biographical sketches of each author and mini-descriptions of 50 additional business books (the "runners-up")

The summaries are written in a crisp, lively style that helps clarify the concepts of the original works (no matter what time period they are from). Hamel's commentaries provide readers with context and valuable insights.

This outstanding collection of outstanding ideas provides critical help for managers who crave knowledge but are short on time.

4 out of 5 stars Introductions into 50 great management and business classics.......2001-08-05

Stuart Crainer is business and management writer, who quite often appears in The Financial Times. Gary Hamel is a top business writer/management guru, fellow at Harvard Business School, visiting professor at the London Business School, and chairman of California-based consulting firm Strategos. Both have written several business-related books.

The book starts with an introduction by Gary Hamel, who lists the books featured per issues - management, leadership, complexity, people, customerd, global, the future, renewal, competition, efficiency, strategy, and fun. Then, Stuart Crainer describes 50 management and business classics in alphabetical order of the authors. The classics featured range from Sun Tzu's Art of War (500 BC) and Machiavelli's The Prince (1513) through to modern works from Gary Hamel, Michael Porter, Peter Senge and Tom Peters. I do not think that anybody will argue the author's selection, since all books are truly greats. Since the complete book consists about 300 pages, each classic receives about 4-6 pages (introduction by Gary Hamel, biography of author(s), and a description of the main ideas and issues). This is enough for a quick insight and description, but do not expect to become a specialist in any of the issues.

The breakdown into issues makes it easy for readers to choose a subject/books. You can then have a quick flick through the particular summary/summaries. If you like the summary/summaries, you will still require to purchase or borrow the book(s) since the summaries are not that detailed. I used this book during my MBA-course (in particular during the earlier part), where I used it as a type of tool since it pointed me to the best book(s) for a particular subject. (I must admit that I also bought Stuart Crainer's 110 Ultimate Book of Business Gurus, but I do much more prefer/use this one.) The book is simple to use and is written in simple US-English.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough meat.......2001-07-09

I like the concept of this book and I have no problem with its selections. However, I find that there isn't very much said about each of these business books. While historical context is provided for each, there is little that gives me a new perpective on things or provides me with something that I can apply. It is like viewing historical documents in a museum without there being a description of why they're relevant or how they impact the present day. I prefer the more vibrant discussion found in "The Guru Guide."

5 out of 5 stars 50 Books That Changed the World.......2000-11-28

This book gives you a tantalizing sense of business history and a context in which to hone your own wisdom. Few books give you the opportunity to sample the nuggets of the time-tested thought of 50 mentors like this one. One or more of its trains of thought could be just what you need to help you grow the roots of solutions and grease your strategic and visionary gears.

5 out of 5 stars Great historical review.......2000-06-01

This book can be seen as a great condensation of management literature. The selection can obviously be discussed but the beaty is to be able to get the main points from 50 milestones in management thinking. Moreover, some books could be a discovering and prompt you to read them. The only weakness is that some books are out of date (which doesn't mean old but overcome by time) and I would have prefered 50 "still alive" books.

4 out of 5 stars Many of these books are must reading for MBA students.......1999-12-29

This is a very useful book for anyone interested in the study of management. While the books listed are personal selections of the author, I think he did a respectable job given the enormity of the task. I applaud the author for including popular and academic works both new and old. One could challenge some of the entries, but again, they are personal selections. Some titles are out of the mainstream literature and new finds to me--I'm sure anyone will find some useful books they were previously unaware of. One notable omission, in my opinion, is lack of any works on EVA. This is an important topic for any manager and should have at least made the "2nd 50" listed in the appendix. Overall, a very useful book for anyone wishing to pursue the literature on management.

                                          Book Description

The Internet Revolution has been broadly advertised-yet despite the onslaught of warnings about what companies need to do to transform themselves, most corporations, large and small, remain completely unprepared for the long-term demands of the digital economy. While they publicly embrace e-everything, most managers have done little more than patch Web initiatives onto their existing business structures as online start-ups boldly claim the electronic marketspace.
In Unchained Value, Internet expert Mary Cronin argues that these corporations will fail at e-business as long as they continue to use the traditional value chain as the strategic model for the enterprise. She introduces a radically new model for organization she calls the digital value system-focused not on static, internally focused "chains" but on dynamic, external webs of relationships that take full advantage of the power, flexibility, and opportunity of the digital arena. According to Cronin, four factors define the new value system of digital businesses: (1) collaborating with multiple players outside the firm based on real time information pooling; (2) mastering dynamic pricing for digital marketplaces; (3) establishing customer trust and lifetime increasing returns through a proactive balance of privacy and personalization; and (4) providing essential, relationship-based online services that can be delivered to customers on the fly.
Using compelling data and case studies from dozens of online companies and innovative multinational corporations, this book identifies the new realities every company has to reckon with in the shift from internal value chains to Internet-based value systems, and illuminates who wins and who loses when processes traditionally controlled within the firm are optimized for an open, networked digital environment. Examining core business functions from supply chain management to product design and production, from sales distribution to customer support, Cronin describes how companies must align the entire business with the Internet, and details the challenges and rewards of implementing and expanding a digital value system successfully.
Whether a company is dealing in bits and bytes or bricks and steel, Unchained Value offers a much-needed framework for assessing the impact of the Internet on sources of business value and competitive advantage. Helping managers at all levels develop and analyze e-commerce strategies, this invaluable book will provide readers with the strategic firepower to totally rethink their businesses and benefit from the opportunities of the new economy.

While the New Economy has forced businesses, large and small, to re-evaluate their core value proposition, few have been able to truly leverage the internet to enable greater economic value. It seems that managers are promoting all things "e", but internet initiatives rarely yield any added value. In Unchained Value, Internet expert Mary Cronin argues that these corporations will fail at e-business as long as they continue to use the traditional value chain as the strategic model for the enterprise. She introduces a new model based on the Traci model for organizations which she calls the digital value system -focused not on static, internally focused "chains" but on dynamic, external webs of relationships that take full advantage of the power, flexibility, and opportunity of the digital arena.

But for those who have read most of the books around on the e-revolution , skip this one you won't learn much new.

                                          1 out of 5 stars A Great Disappointment.......2000-12-05

This was a great disappointment. It says nothing new, it is a rehash, boringly written, and uninteresting in the way the book is laid out. It made me angry that I had been duped by the publicity. I would have returned it if I could be bothered. To be avoided!!
