Book Description

Anyone who still believes women are frail, powerless, and incapable of dealing with machinery should read the story of Frances Nunnery, a determined, ingenious entrepreneur whose career and personality defy every stereotype about women. We first meet her as a self-sufficient little girl working on a Virginia tobacco farm, a youngster who, when she got a “lickin,” never cried but “stood there as a matter of pride” and took her medicine. At thirteen she went to work at the Heinz plant in Pittsburgh, and at twenty-one she was shipped off to Colorado to be married to a man she didn't know. In 1921 she escaped to New Mexico in a Model T Ford, settling in Albuquerque, where she worked as a chauffeur, bus driver, boarding house keeper, and night club singer, among other occupations. She never stopped working, living all over New Mexico, ranching, working as a deputy sheriff, and selling real estate.

Cecil Dawkins has made Frances Nunnery's taped recollections into a lively story that sounds as though Nunnery were telling tales to an old friend at her kitchen table. There is something characteristically western in Frances's ingenuity and determination, but you don't need to be interested in the West to enjoy her memoir.

The story of a woman who made her life in New Mexico—a determined, ingenious entrepreneur whose career and personality defy every stereotype about women.

Frances Nunnery was a one-off. She raised cattle, drove buses, bought and sold ranches and other real estate, was a saloon-keeper and restaurant owner. She could shoot, cook, ride, fix cars and trucks, and build houses. She had two husbands, a daughter and friends of every stripe. She lived poor and well-off and she did almost everything by herself. She constantly ran into calamity and adversity and never whined or complained. This book is in her own words and it's a treat and a page-turner. She's an inspiration for just about anyone.

    Book Description

Excerpts from a Family Medical Dictionary is an intimate, exquisite, and true account of what it is to help a parent die. After her mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer, former home care worker and award-winning writer Rebecca Brown cared for her mother during the last six months of her life. This spare, unsentimental book comes out of that experience. In short chapters headed by definitions of medical terms, she confronts anemia, chemotherapy, metastasis, cremation. Brown’s is a poignant and unflinching story of how one family coped with loss and learned about the longevity of love.

The Wisconsin edition is for sale only in North America.

5 out of 5 stars The beautiful stark poetry of death.......2007-01-19

Well I have been a doctor 26 years. My sister dies when I was 20 years. This is almost poetic in its stark Hemingway style of narration of a loved mother's death. I cannot think of anyone who should not read this book. Family, love, pain, compassion, loss, and a beautiful family end.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for all who have a dying loved one..........2006-01-13

Having witnessed two in-laws passing on after terminal illnesses, I came into reading this powerful book with some experiences... but the story EXCERPTS FROM A FAMILY MEDICAL DICTIONARY moved me to tears, made me laugh (during one scene involving two sisters in the backyard) and thoroughly saturated my senses for several hours...until I was completely drained...and satisfied. BRAVO!

5 out of 5 stars Greatly pleasing work on timeless themes of loss.......2005-12-12

I greatly enjoyed Rebecca Brown's work. I had the opportunity to hear Excerpts from a Family Medical Dictionary when the author visited our college campus in September. I found her writing to be poetic and passionate, lingering somewhere between the worlds of prose and fiction. I was greatly moved by her beautiful descriptions of pain and loss. The format of the work as a dictionary also proved interesting.

1 out of 5 stars Did not keep my interest.......2005-10-31

There's no doubt the subject matter of this book is moving.
Everyone has to deal with death. However, subtract the personal anguish intrinsic to the subject matter, and what remains is not so interesting. The conceit of dictionary is used utterly conventionally, literally, without any spins or innovation. I found it odd and overly literal to go thru the whole alphabet just like a regular dictionary, from A to Z, with no attempt to "play." The sentences are clearly written and detailed, but they are not philosophically interesting; they simply reiterate the age old questions such as, why is there pain and death (perhaps there is not much else to ask, unless the writer gets truly creative, and asks such questions very indirectly, like Beckett). This book is a basically a clearly-written diary superimposed upon the form of a dictionary and the material that emerges is not the sum of the products. It is just two forms, diary and dictionary, jammed together for no clear literary purpose.

2 out of 5 stars Frommers Took the Best Ideas.......2005-06-08

This is probably a good book, but if you buy the Frommers Guide to Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque you get the same "hidden" details and more accurate reviews. Brought this book on my vacation and maybe got two bits of interesting info from it once after I got there.

5 out of 5 stars A great travel book on New Mexico.......2001-03-20

We live in New Mexico, and every holiday or free weekend we use this guide to lead us to new exciting and beautiful places. This book is the perfect travel companion for anyone interested in smaller, off the beaten path places. This book led us to discover Las Vegas, NM, a (yet) not so touristy place unlike Taos or Sante Fe. Thanks to this guide, we enjoyed the free road side Hot Springs located in a pristine alpine valley, and delicious restaurants that put the more known places to shame. It has small eateries and interesting museums, parks like the little known Three Rivers Petroglyph National Monument with thousands of drawings, on the way from Socorro to Alamogordo. Yet again, this is a place not mentioned in other tourist maps or books. I would recommend for anyone really interested in traveling through New Mexico to also have DeLorme Topographic Map of New Mexico with them for references and the smaller roads. The general RandMcNally or AAA maps just don't cut it. Those topo maps are only about 16 dollars and will work great with the Hidden New Mexico book or any travelguide. Check out Chaco Canyon National Monument as well, and stay in El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, you will not believe your eyes! That was also a tip from the Hidden New Mexico book. Enjoy the most beautiful state in the nation (I am biased, I know)!

            1 out of 5 stars Doesn't shed much light.......1999-12-23

This book gives virtually no driving directions or driving times - an email query to the publisher was not acknowledged. It claims that the only way to fly in is to Albuquerque - in fact, United flies to Santa Fe, as I discovered while boarding my plane to Albuquerque - giving me an extra hour's drive coming and going. The maps are inadequate at best - few of the attractions/lodgings mentioned are shown. Hotel listings are incomplete, and biased toward the high end. Admission fees to attractions - often as high as $10/person - are not given. Many sights are mentioned (Anasazi cliff dwellings, Mesa Verde) without a description, but are not in the index. No chart of annual temperatures was given - that I could see - I found out the hard way that it gets very, very cold in the winter. In short, using this book to plan and travel was an extremely frustrating experience.

4 out of 5 stars Readable and thought-provoking case studies.......2000-04-30

This book describes eight case studies of companies that have used self-managing teams. Each is different; most are fairly successful, but all are illuminating. The book is written well enough that it is a much more engaging read than most business books.

I was particularly interested by their study of W.L.Gore, which has perhaps the most remarkable structure (or lack of it) of any company in America. They provide enough detail to get a sense of a really remarkable company; most of the other case studies, which involve providing autonomy to small groups rather than completely demolishing the traditional company hierarchy, are both less impressive in their achievements and easier to implement.

The book does a good job of making the case for autonomy, and the authors include the necessary caveat that you can only build a crack team out of good quality employees. The fundamental argument is that people work better and harder when they're given autonomy, and that companies can therefore reap big rewards from doing so.

Readers interested in this area might also like to look at Ackoff's "The Democratic Corporation". Both books, however, in reviewing how to improve a company's performance by changing its internal structure, don't address the ownership issue at all--i.e. whether employee ownership is a necessary or at least valuable part of the mix in creating the right incentives for employees to "behave like owners". That aside, however, I can strongly recommend this book: it's a fascinating survey of some unusual but very powerful management strategies.

                              Book Description

This book examines Keynes's philosophical thinking as it developed from his earliest works through to The General Theory. It explains the role of philosophy in Keynes's later economics, showing how development and change in Keynes's philosophical thinking affected the development of his later economic thinking. The book represents a case study in the philosophy of economics, and unlike other books on the topic of Keynes and philosophy, argues that Keynes changed his philosophical views as he came to think about economics.

Davis bases his view of Keynes's philosophical development primarily on two error filled reviews of the A Treatise on Probability, written by Frank Ramsey in 1922 and 1926 ,plus Keynes's brief 4 page review of Ramsey's work in the New Statesman in 1931.Davis's ignorance of Keynes's logical theory of probability is best illustrated by his unclear, vague and dubious understanding of Keynes's views on induction(Davis,pp.142-146).Here is what Davis should have written.First, for Keynes there are two types of probabilities, imprecise interval(set)estimates that are"nonnumerical" and"nonmeasurable" because they require TWO numbers, not ONE number,to estimate the probability relationship and precise point estimates that require positive symmetrical evidence based on an application of Keynes's principle of indifference(and not the principle of nonsufficient reason). In Part II of the TP,Keynes introduces his theory of approximation in chapter 15 and extends the applications into chapter 17.Keynes gave the readers of his book ample warning by inserting references to chapter 15 in chapters 3,5 and 10.The theory of approximation represents Keynes's formal technique of specifying interval estimates. It is based on the work of George Boole in chapters 16-21 of The Laws of Thought(1854).Keynes then builds on one of Boole's problems by changing one of the assumptions. This modified problem allows Keynes to derive the major result of Part III for induction on pp.235-238 and 253-257 of the TP.This result holds for both precise and imprecise probabilities due to Keynes's definition of "finite probabilities".Now none of this appears in either Ramsey or Davis, who apes Ramsey. This is because Ramsey completely overlooked Keynes's definitions of nonmeasurable and nonnumerical in chapter III of the TP.In fact,Ramsey only read the first 4 chapters of the TP plus another 10-15 pages taken haphazardly from Parts II,III,and V.Ditto for Davis. For instance,Ramsey did not take the time to see that Keynes's axioms for addition and multiplication are defined on sets of propositions and were meant to apply to both precise and imprecise probabilities.Nor did Ramsey look at the extensions in chapters 8 and 15 of the TP.Ditto for Davis. In his review of Ramsey,Keynes completely rejected Ramsey's approach as a foundation for analogy and induction. This slips by Davis.Keynes "yields"to Ramsey what is already implicit in the TP-a rational decision maker will obey the laws of probability when they are strictly applicable and a single unique probability density function is known for certain.Of course, this means that Ramsey's theory is a special case of Keynes's.Davis's claim that Keynes rejected his general logical theory of probability to accept Ramsey's special theory of precise, numerical, subjective probabilities, and then implicitly formulated something called an intersubjective theory ,has no factual support in any of Keynes's writings.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Thoroughly worthless..........2005-04-08

This book is completely worthless. I bought it for a class only because I had to. It doesn't have anything in it that's not already common sense. I didn't learn anything except for a few new-fangled terms for stuff that I, or for that matter anyone who's ever held a job, already know. If you are looking to improve your management skills, don't waste your time with this book.
