                      After reveiwing this book, I returned it. Any child who was having difficulty passing the FCAT would not take the time to read through (much less comprehend) the "tips" to passing the test. Your time would be better spent having your child work through problems similar to those on the FCAT.

                      This is a very well written textbook on time series forecasting. This 725 page textbook provides thorough coverage of time series methods from elementary statistics to Box-Jenkins models and transfer functions and intervention models. It is easy to read and includes many tables of actual data which are analyzed. Highly recommended.

                      I reviewed the third edition of this book for the American Statistician in 1994. The book covers most of the important topics for an applied course and has a reasonable list of references. There are many examples and homework exercises. Statistical software packages such as SAS and MINITAB are used throughout in example problems. The early chapters cover the basics of statistical inference and regression (Chapters 2-5). This material can be skipped in a first time series course if introductory statistics is a prerequisite.

                      The latter chapters cover time series regression, seasonal decomposition methods, exponential smoothing and Box-Jenkins methods. But this book does not include nonlinear time series models and it overlooks the recent and popular state space approach to time series modeling. Multivariate time series methods are also left out, though perhaps they are more appropriate for an advanced or second course in time series analysis.

                      The cookbook nature of the text can be found in the guidelines given for Box-Jenkins model identification. The statistical theory that the methods rely on is avoided. Although a number of important probability distributions are used with their relevant statistical tables, the underlying assumptions and distributional theory is completely avoided. Important concepts such as the central limit theorem and the concept of a stationary stochastic process are given only very brief treatment. Other concepts are oversimplified to avoid the need for the development of any distribution theory.

                      This book will serve well for a course in which the student is interested in how to implement exponential smoothing and the general class of Box-Jenkins models through the use of standard statistical packages. However if the instructor wants depth of understanding the text is not adequate. Frequecy domain methods often useful in engineering applications are not even discussed.

                      While the book covers forecasting applications, it does not consider applications to decomposition of variance or discriminant analysis. Time series methods are also applicable in these contexts. Abraham and Ledolter (1984) "Statistical Methods for Forecasting" cover the same topics but in much greater depth. Also Janacek and Swift (1993) "Time Series: Foirecasting, Simulation, Applications" is slightly more advanced and provides broader coverage. Anyone interested in the theory can consult a number of good books including the latest edition of Brockwell and Davis "Time Series: Theory and Methods". Shumway and Stoffer (2000) "Time Series Analysis and Its Applications" is up-to-date, comprehensive and has many good engineering applications.

                      This book covers step by step methodology and theory for the basic time series concepts. It has worked out examples with even the most rudimentary calculations demonstrated for complex subjects like ARMA and Box-Cox decomposition. It is a good book for basic practitioners and those with a basic interest in time series analysis

                              I like reading business books, but some of them are quite dry. That was one of the best aspects of this book. The selling strategies are outstanding. Beyond good. But wow! I don't think I have ever read a business book that was as much fun to read as this one. Each chapter and key point is introduced with a short story from history that is well written and relevant to the point. I felt myself wanting to skip ahead and just read all the history examples. Fantastic Book

                              The DNA Selling Method is unquestionably unique. The fact that it is so simple does rather beg the question "why has someone not come up with this before?"
                              It is designed specifically for the modern high-tech sales environment and I had my entire sales force read the book and go through the training. The difference has been staggering and the training is still fresh in our minds almost 12 months later. It has been just amazing watching my sales team turn into "great listeners" and the imformation they extract from our clients has sent our close ratios through the roof. We are now able to predict our quarterly performance to within 5%, which means we now have one system that enables us to predict where we will finish. This has led to increased credibility for our team and a much more confident management team. If you are a sales professional or manager, this is an excellent methodology to implement (it is also very amusing and a fast and easy read).

                              With so many sales books out there, it hard to know which ones have anything new. A friend of mine recommended this, and I was instantly captivated by both the writing and the tactics described.

                                      This is the first book on negotation strategies that I have ever found that really addresses negotiation from the sales side. There is a full section in the book that completely defines and analyzes every possible buyer negotiation tactic, and then lays out the best seller counter-tactic to deal with it. Brilliant! I wish I had this years ago.

                                                    The book is an excellent resource of E-Business and E-Government literature. Valuable lessons can be learned from the book as it elaborates on E-Commerce initiatives and policy implications in several countries and other topics.

                                                    I like the way the book is organized and find it easy to read through. The book has been organized into three sections: E-Commerce initiatives and policy implications, policy implication for networked SMEs in Supply Chain, and policy push and monitoring.

                                                    Several chapters in the book elaborate on topics related to my current research projects. Reading through these chapters will be very helpful in this regard.

                                                    Professors who offer a postgraduate research course with a focus on e.commerce and SMEs should consider using this book. Like the Burgess book "Managing Information Technology in Small Business" (Stephen Burgess, IDEA, 2002) this is another must read for someone new to IS research in SMEs. The two books complement each other as this book focuses on e.commerce, while the Burgess book covered a broader range of research topics, although about half of it was devoted to e.commerce.

                                                    This is an excellent addition to the literature on electronic business, obviously focusing on this activity in emerging markets. The book contains twenty individual studies of electronic commerce of various kinds (B2B, B2C, electronic banking, electronic brokerage) in emerging markets ranging from India to Egypt to Eastern Europe. The individual chapters almost all provide valuable new empirical evidence on the extent of e-commerce in the different countries, the barriers faced in building up such business in emerging markets, and a number of suggestions about how firms should proceed to take advantage of e-commerce in their own contexts.

                                                    The studies by Sridhar and Sridhar on India and by Pucihar and Podlogar on Slovenia exemplify the careful and detailed analyses in this book. The India study presents a conceptual model of e-commerce adoption and then provides a series of empirical examples of firms and levels of activity that show how e-commerce is growing and what the limitations are in that country. The Slovenia study by contrast uses an interview methodology to study e-commerce activity of 119 large firms in that country. In each instance the authors have given a well-documented analysis of the question of e-commerce penetration of the two countries.

                                                    I was interested to see how on-line job recruitment is growing in Egypt, based on the study by Nahed Azab. It sounded like a parallel to the situation in the US, with the additional restrictions of a lower level of internet penetration, higher costs of gaining access to the on-line job market, and some degree of resistance to this vehicle. The path model tested by Azab is logically structured and appropriately tested to evaluate a series of hypotheses concerning technology acceptance in Egypt. Though it is not clear how the sample of 124 people were chosen to respond to the author's questions, the demographics are interesting, and the responses are certainly useful.

                                                    There are no ultimate conclusions presented in this project. Kamel's introduction summarizes the papers that constitute the book, but he draws no conclusions other than to say that the empirical content of the papers will give us a better understanding of the limitations and opportunities for e-commerce in emerging markets. He is right in making this claim, though I would have liked to see some more detailed thought about the implications of this situation for companies and for government policymakers. The empirical evidence, in any event, really offers a wealth of new information and knowledge to the reader.

                                                    5 out of 5 stars Bridging the e-business divide.......2005-10-19

                                                    This is a long awaited book that fills the gap in books relating to e-business in the developing world. Most of the e-commerce or e-business books would assign a couple of pages to the developing world. They usually include a couple of stereotyped anecdotes describing how e-commerce helped a poor illeterate farmer in the middle of nowhere in Africa export his products to Macy's in downtown San Francisco!!! These couple of pages usually lack the scientific foundation that make them credible. This book: "Electronic Business In Developing Countries: Opportunities And Challenges" is the complete opposite: First it is written by professionals from the field from the four corners of the developing world, this makes their approach a real down to earth one with examples from the REAL developing world. Second, it offers a variety of cases covering diffrent domains of e-business and does not limit itself to e-commerce. Last but not least, it offers to the reader a substantial amount of referenced papers and publications that is on its own merit a fantastic source of information.
                                                    It really deserves the 5 stars not only for the content but also for the guts to go ahead and put the effort to write it, compile it and publish it. I am sure there will be many editions of this bbok published, I just hope that the author, Sherif Kamel, would keep up the effort of identifying more and more research papers and articles covering this forgotten issue of e-business in the developing world. I also hpe that the next editions would have a "chain of thoughts" (un fil conducteur as they call it in French!) that would take the reader smoothly from one chapter to the other.

                                                    I believe this book to be up to date in terms of its ideas, and to stretch the imagination in terms of certain concepts and their practical aplicability.

                                                    As the book is written by IBM personnel, most of the software is slanted toward IBM and thus I would consider a fair reflection of overall developments.

                                                    Very handy CD rom included in the back, although mostly test stuff.
