Chessie Racing: The Story of Maryland's Entry in the 1997-1998 Whitbread Round the World Race
George J. Collins , and Kathy Alexander Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0801864135 |
Book Description
This book records the history of the racing yacht Chessie, the first ever entry from the Chesapeake Bay in the famous Whitbread Round the World Race. Skippered by Baltimore businessman George Collins and named after the Chesapeake's equivalent to the Loch Ness monster, Chessie became a focal point of regional and national pride when she competed in 1997-98. That year was also the first time that Baltimore and Annapolis were included as a combined stopover in the nine-leg, 31,600-mile race, beginning and ending in Southampton, England. After a neck-and-neck race up the bay against famed skipper Dennis Connor, Chessie entered Baltimore's Inner Harbor greeted by the cheers of thousands of fans. During the stopover, over a half-million visitors came to the Whitbread Race Village in Baltimore and an additional sixty thousand toured the Race Village in Annapolis, giving Baltimore-Annapolis the highest attendance of any of the nine ports visited by the race.
While racing, the boat also served an educational purpose through a two-part curriculum developed by the Living Classrooms Foundation, a Baltimore nonprofit educational organization for at-risk children. Children from five hundred schools in twenty states and seven foreign countries participated through the Whitbread Education Project, a curriculum package augmented by an Internet component, the Chessie Chase, which explored academic subjects such as math, science, social studies, geography, and literature and tackled such practical issues as vessel design, ocean currents, changing weather, and the principles of navigation. Classes competed in a virtual race against each other in the multifaceted program for a chance to visit Chessie and meet her crew when she reached Baltimore. The children also exchanged e-mails with Chessie's crew throughout the race. When President Clinton and Vice President Gore visited the Living Classrooms Foundation in Baltimore, students helped them write an e-mail to the boat saying, "Have a great race."
This book contains chapters on the race, boat construction, crew selection, and the Living Classrooms Foundation Whitbread Education Project. Personal experiences and memories of the crew bring the sailing adventure to life and reveal the educational purpose of the boat. Sidebars feature useful charts and information, special observations, and a few human-interest e-mail exchanges between individuals and the crew. A large Mercator-projection map marks the race course and individual legs. Numerous photos document racing action as well as the hoopla on shore.

Completing Graduate School Long Distance (Surviving Graduate School)
Darrel L. Hammon , and Steven K. Albiston Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0761904867 |
Book Description
Completing Graduate School Long-Distance is a comprehensive guidebook for earning a graduate degree without ever setting foot on a campus. While long-distance graduate education initially began in the western states as a geographical necessity, it is gaining popularity throughout the country due in large part to significant advances in telecommunication technology. Now, more and more graduate institutions are offering degree programs that students can complete via the Internet, over the telephone, and through the mail. Pursuing an advanced degree long-distance has its own inherent difficulties, and the authors offer valuable advice based on their own personal experience to help students through them. They raise important issues to consider when contemplating earning a degree long-distance, from the many factors that come into play when selecting an appropriate institution to the essentials of obtaining and utilizing necessary resources and technology. The authors also offer tremendous support for students who have already begun long-distance programs. They outline key strategies for time management, selecting graduate committees, developing support groups, and meeting thesis/dissertation and graduation requirements. In addition, they have compiled useful appendixes that include a listserve of graduate schools that offer long-distance programs and the Globewide Network Academy Catalog.

Perspectives on Business Modelling: Understanding and Changing Organisations
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540652493 |
Book Description
How can established models and methods be employed for the understanding and change of organisations? One of the key issues presented in this book is bridging the communication gap between business leaders and IT experts in companies and public services. This is facilitated by combining different models for the development of corporate strategies, business processes and information support. The leading idea behind this book is to present different perspectives on business modelling, based on established theories and practical experiences. The book offers advanced knowledge and relevant information on the key issues in business modelling for today`s organisations.Customer Reviews:
For experienced business modelers - short on technques.......2002-06-19
Each paper is written by a subject matter expert, and each exposes key factors that need to be considered when selecting and using a particular modeling technique. Techniques are not addressed in detail; however, as an analyst who uses both UML and IDEF0 I found that the book supports those two widely divergent methods. This is because of the focus of the book, especially with respect to organizational change and business-to-IT alignment that are addressed in Section II, and the tools and checklists provided in Section III.
The ideal audience for this book is someone who is experienced in one or more modeling methodologies, with a good understanding of business processes and technology integration. Readers who are new to business modeling will be frustrated by the diversity of the topics and the absence of techniques. The experienced modeler, on the other hand, will find this book to be a treasure trove of facts and information.

Statistical Models and Control Charts for High Quality Processes
Min Xie , Thong Ngee Goh , and Vellaisamy Kuralmani Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402070748 |
Book Description
Control charts are widely used in industry to monitor processes that are far from Zero-Defect (ZD), and their use in a near Zero-Defect manufacturing environment poses many problems. This book presents techniques of using control charts for high-quality processes, and some recent findings and applications of statistical control chart techniques for ZD processes are presented.
A powerful technique based on counting of the cumulative conforming (CCC) items between two nonconforming ones is discussed in detail. Extensions of the CCC chart are described, as well as applications of cumulative sum and exponentially weighted moving average techniques to CCC-related data, multivariate methods, economic design of control chart procedures, and modeling and analysis of trended but regularly adjusted processes.
Many examples, charts, and procedures, are presented throughout the book, and references are provided for those interested in exploring the details. A number of questions and issues are posed for further investigations. Researchers and students may find many ideas in this book useful in their academic work, as a foundation is laid for the exploration of many further theoretical and practical issues.

States of Inquiry: Social Investigations and Print Culture in Nineteenth-Century Britain and the United States (New Studies in American Intellectual and Cultural History)
Oz Frankel Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0801883407 |
Book Description
In the mid-nineteenth century, American and British governments marched with great fanfare into the marketplace of knowledge and publishing. British royal commissions of inquiry, inspectorates, and parliamentary committees conducted famous social inquiries into child labor, poverty, housing, and factories. The American federal government studied Indian tribes, explored the West, and investigated the condition of the South during and after the Civil War.
Performing, printing, and then circulating these studies, government established an economy of exchange with its diverse constituencies. In this medium, which Frankel terms "print statism," not only tangible objects such as reports and books but knowledge itself changed hands. As participants, citizens assumed the standing of informants and readers.
Even as policy investigations and official reportage became a distinctive feature of the modern governing process, buttressing the claim of the state to represent its populace, government discovered an unintended consequence: it could exercise only limited control over the process of inquiry, the behavior of its emissaries as investigators or authors, and the fate of official reports once issued and widely circulated.
This study contributes to current debates over knowledge, print culture, and the growth of the state as well as the nature and history of the "public sphere." It interweaves innovative, theoretical discussions into meticulous, historical analysis.

Demographic Behavior in the Past: A Study of Fourteen German Village Populations in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries (Cambridge Studies in Population, Economy and Society in Past Time)
John E. Knodel Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521892813 |
Book Description
This book provides a detailed examination of the demographic behavior of families during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in a sample of fourteen villages in five different regions of Germany. It is based on the reconstituted family histories of vital events (births, deaths and marriages) compiled by genealogies for the entire populations of these villages. The book applies the type of micro-level analysis possible with family reconstitution data for the crucial period leading to and encompassing the early stages of the demographic transition, including the initial onset of the decline of fertility to low modern levels. The analysis explores many aspects of demographic behavior which have been largely ignored by previous macro-level investigations of the demographic transition. These include infant and child mortality, maternal mortality, marriage, marital dissolution, bridal pregnancy and illegitimacy. The core of the study, however, deals with marital reproduction, examining the modernization of reproductive behavior in terms of the transition from a situation of natural fertility to one characterized by pervasive family limitation.

At last, a text my students like! That's a victory........1999-03-04
I am writing as a reviewer, consultant and university instructor. I use this text in teaching my introductory compensation course at UCLA's School of Business and Management. I have tried many texts that my students bemoaned as too technical, boring, and somniferous. But my students find this text highly readable, understandable and interesting. That's a victory, especially when my students are mostly working HR professionals who drag themselves to class through the clogged freeways of Los Angeles. The least I can offer them is a good textbook; this is it!
