Customer Reviews:
Much more a "what" book than a "how" one.......2005-01-29
I expect this book to tell me "how" to spot the trend. Instead, it keeps on telling me "what" (10 chapters out of 11) experts predicted on or before 2002. Today is 29th Jan 2005 and well it's natural for me to comment that it is quite outdated and irrelevant.
In short, not recommended.
p.s. To justify my rating of the book, below please find the ten ways (taglines) to be a better trendspotter from the last and only relevant chapter for your reference.
1. Faddy Trends
2. Note + Phone + Mail
3. Books for the lover
4. This web I am tangled in (websites)
5. News or lose (newsletter)
6. Grassroots trendspotting from our packed files (talk to experts who would be moved by your enthusiasm)
7. Trade Ya! (trade and non-mainstream magazines)
8. Pay attention to little guys (Alan Greenspan would track something as seemingly insignificant as the production and sale of packing paper)
9. Information, please. (newspapers)
10. Anything rhyme with Google?
Great read for beginning futurists.......2004-07-09
Richard Laermer presents a entertaining and informative look at the future in "Trendspotting." Laermer takes a holistic approach to envisioning the future, focusing on entertainment and spirituality as well as technology. This is important, as trends converge and combine in unexpected ways -- which is the central challenge of futurism. "Trendspotting" also strikes a balance between optimism and a wariness of unanticipated consequences, which sets it apart from the Internet-will-change-everything enthusiasm of future guides of just a couple of years ago.
One thing "Trendspotting" is not is in-depth... which is not necessarily a bad thing. The generalist approach makes it a great introductory text for beginning futurists.
The book, however, has two funamental weaknesses. One is Laermer's very clear liberal bias. In of itself, that isn't a problem, but a more politically balanced viewpoint would allow the book to be even more enlightening. The second, more serious problem is not so much the fault of the book or author, but of time. My edition is dated 2002, and it makes absolutely no reference to the most profound events of our time: 9/11 and the subsequent war on terror. Books like this ought to be updated every year or so, as even the most subtle of current events can change the outlook of the future.
Does not deliver on it's promise........2003-12-01
I have read a number of trendspotting books over the years, and this one does not deserve a place in this genre.
There are three major shortfallings:
1. Laermer makes the crucial error of letting his liberal/progressive political bias affect his interpretation of culture. I agree with his politics to a great extent, but introducing it into his research affects his perceptions and make his findings shallow. This is most obvious where he discusses "The Family" and "Spirituality" where he is clearly an outsider.
2. Unlike genuine trendspotting books by Rushkoff, Naisbitt, Toffler and Popcorn, this book does not offer any new thesis in decoding culture. Why is there only one chapter on the "how" of trendspotting?
The book should really be titled "My Trendspotting".
3. The back cover claims "original insights" from various industry insiders. Don't be misled, these guys don't get much input in the book, and they are also hampered by their own interests or bias.
I suggest you use the Amazon browse feature and read a few pages before you make your purchasing decision, and compare it with serious trend spotting books by the authors mentioned above.
Wake up and smell the future guide.......2002-04-01
Clues to the future are right in front of those willing to look for and use them. The author's easy to read prose, personal point of view and down to earth tales, provide often funny examples of how to ride or miss the opportunity boat. This book is a definite read for researchers trying to spot the next "Big Blue."
A true guide to where society is heading.......2002-03-18
Mr. Laermer is a forward thinker with the ability to bring ideas from many different places together. His book gives us insight as to where society is heading over the next few years. This book is your ticket to get on the train.....with out it you may be walking.

An instrument to measure this approach is the European Model for Business Excellence which is well known in many European countries for national quality prizes. The book explains this model in great detail and shows how to implement it in an organisational development process. A description of the most relevant management tools in this context, like self-assessment, policy deployment and benchmarking, will be of particular interest to the reader. The book combines in a unique way the theoretical background of the subject with practical experience in consulting. The reader will understand the necessity of holistic approaches and will learn how the European Business Excellence Model overcomes traditional ways of measuring business results.

Book Description
This book places current and future work team practices in historical context. Researchers from 10 countries have contributed chapters that represent developments specific to their regions and that illustrate the way ideas spread around the world. Some principles of effective teaming were independently discovered in different countries, and some principles emerged from the work of researchers like Trist, Emery, and Lewin and spread around the world. But all of the practices were driven by the dynamic tension between the psychology of the employee and business necessities. Theories and cases describe autonomous work groups, self-managed work teams, cell teams, and other collaborative work structures. Contributions to the design of such structures came from psychology, management, sociology, industrial engineering, and manufacturing. Because of the challenges inherent in reorganising work around teams instead of individuals, organizations are at different stages in evolving into 21st century work systems.

The answers lie in the understanding of business, economics, and political dynamics shaping the emerging markets.
Customer Reviews:
appallingly, utterly banal.......2001-11-17
This is standard political economy, which the author acts like he himself discovered. As such, it heaps banality upon banality in the stuffiest and most pretentious pseudo-English intellectual style. I believe that this is the product of a truly mediocre mind, isolated from the academic mainstream to such an extent that he is unaware that he has NOTHING new to say. His main point is that institutions and politics influence the business environment. DUH. It would be funny if it weren't pathetic. In addition, his writing style is neither elegant nor fluid, but flat and dull. I would not have read this it if I didn't have to for a class.
If you want books on political economy and globalism, look elsewhere.
war of civilisations or boundariless world market?.......2001-09-28
I found this book deeply insightful when I first read it, and I have since returned to its wisdom in the light of the current threat to world economic development posed by the terrorist attacks.
Story is an astute observer of our world, and perspective like this is a valuable commidity in times like these.
If you're wondering what the future holds for world markets, then look no further. Story says that "Politics drives the world economy, because history is made by humans" and observes that economic prosperity and political tranquillity do not always go hand in hand.
There's a great section in Frontiers of Fortune that introduces Story's concept of world and local time; something that helps explain the friction between the instantaneous, future-oriented global time and the inherited cultural and historic sphere of local in which most people live, with its own civilizations, mental landscapes and holy places.
So is our global village heading to a war of civilisations or to a boundariless world market? No definitive answers here, but all the insights to make us wiser decision-makers in the future.

Book Description
Space activities are currently in a transitional phase: the shift from publicly financed to private activities is a result of reduced public funding and increased commercial space opportunities. This leads to an increased commercial space marketing mix and marketing management.
A classical `4Ps' approach is proposed, covering the Product, Price, Physical distribution, and Promotion of space activities. Special emphasis is placed on technology transfer, spin-off, and intellectual property aspects, as well as on aspects of space economy, such as alternate financing schemes like PPP (Public-Private Partnership) and sponsoring. However, space activists require broad public support and the exploratory aspect of space activities, the `Space Frontier' dimensions should not be ignored. For this reason, the philosophical dimension as an integral part of the marketing mix is elaborated in detail.
The approach is illustrated with two case studies: commercialisation of the International Space Station (ISS) and the emerging Space Tourism market.
Book Description
Program evaluation in the public sector has evolved from the status of applied research methodology to become an indispensable component of program operations. The fields of health care, social services, education, and law enforcement now have established their own standards against which program operations are assessed. National accrediting bodies have established systems of rigorous peer review to ensure the quality of program processes and outcomes. The authors address all facets of this standards-based program accreditation in the new Third Edition. This volume clearly details methods of monitoring and reviewing internal processes, as well as systematically conceptualizing outcome evaluations. Planning techniques are facilitated and enhanced by computer-generated project calendars, PERT/CPM applications, and queuing theory/flowcharts. The authors provide concepts and techniques of systems theory, process intervention, research design, and cost-benefit analysis, illustrated with easy-to-understand examples. Hypothetical planning case studies and outcome evaluation exercises provide valuable learning experience to students as they apply the various principles of planning and evaluation discussed throughout the text.
Customer Reviews:
Program Planning and Evaluation for the Public Manager.......2003-06-09
I consider this book to be very informative to program planning and evaluation. The authors included a complete and thorough explanation of system concepts, functions/techniques of planning, internal processes, outcome evaluation, cost benefit analysis and evaluation designs.
I haven't read any other materials dealing with public planning and evaluation but this book clearly pinpointed specific issues to help guide an individual with no prior knowledge.
The book wasn't difficult to read or understand. Chapters 1-7 were in sync from the beginning. Chapter 8 ends with a 10 point checklist for program evaluators. The book contained a wealth of information. However, there could have been more practice exercises and examples of program planning and evaluation. Also, the book could have been longer, it was very short but comprehensive.

ERP - myth, system and organization........2002-10-26
ERP systems are complex and large Information Systems (IS) that tend to need a lot of resources to implement. As such, academics and professionals alike need to ask themselves - why do it?
In this book, several contemporary views are explored, among them mythmaking, ERP as an artifact, cultural aspects as well as potential differences in approaches for large, medium and small enterprises. The different chapters approach the object of interest both in and out of context, each adding different, complimentary perspectives.
I would recommend you to buy this book if you want to find a single resource about ERP that is up to date and that at the same time contain some of the most recent findings in the area.
