Ursula Casanova Manufacturer: Corwin Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0803938039 |
Book Description
Nowhere is the role of the secretary more vital to the smooth functioning of the system than in the office of a school principal. But in spite of her importance (over 99% are women), traditional educational researchers have not approached this position as a valid topic of study.Casanova - a former elementary school principal - examines the role of the school secretary, bringing recognition to a person who has been too long under-valued, under-paid and under-appreciated. She has broken new ground with an exploration of an occupation where women are the dominant force and on whom everyone depends, from students and parents to teachers and administrators.

Learning to Count What Really Counts: The Economics of Wholeness
Tom Bender Manufacturer: Fire River Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0967508924 |
Book Description
Values and the sacred may seem to be strange bed-fellows with economics. This book shows that they are not only compatible, but essential elements of achieving immense economic productivity gains that can create a secure, abundant and caring future for all.Advocates for community well-being, ecological health, and wiser patterns of living have long shied away from root issues of economics, because it seemed their ideas were insupportable by rigorous economic analysis. No more. Bender provides clear documentation that economics based on values, ecology, and the sacred out-performs conventional economics by an order of magnitude. In the process, our conventional economic tools such as "future discounting" and "present value accounting" are shown to be what they really are - ways to conceal the real costs of policies that benefit special interests.
Factor Ten Economics, which Bender pioneered in the early 1970s, is already bringing ten-fold improvement in energy efficiency and resource productivity. It has become public policy of many nations, international development organizations and leading businesses. These gains have been well documented in Paul Hawken and Amory and L. Hunter Lovins' best-selling Natural Capitalism that is creating seismic waves in the business world. Bender's new book shows, however, that resource productivity is only one dimension of Factor Ten Economics. Equally immense improvements are simultaneously possible in institutional and financial performance, personal and social well-being, and in planetary health and goals. Surprisingly, values and the sacred are key.
Bender shows that new perceptions, not new technologies, are what is needed to achieve most of these gains. He provides the key tools to obtain them - and perhaps most importantly, shows how totally different personal and community life is within this new economics. He cautions, however, that change of this magnitude may be a one-shot opportunity, and discusses what we can achieve with this wonderful gift.
The aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks has brought significant questioning of the direction our global culture has taken. Disparities of material wealth and poverty, questionable ethics used to maintain economic supremacy, and absence of spiritual dimensions in our culture appear to be central issues behind both religious fundamentalism and recent terrorism. Bender's latest work provides an unexpected path out of this quagmire. It is clear from what he shows us that we have the resources to make the whole world a success - erasing poverty, eliminating starvation, and ending battles over resources. It is time now for compassion and sharing, not greed. Wisely used, they can open a brighter world for us all. This is vital reading for all.

Disassembly Modeling for Assembly, Maintenance, Reuse and Recycling (St. Lucie Press Series on Resource Management)
A. J. D. Lambert , and Surendra M. Gupta Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1574443348 |
Book Description
Industry has grown to recognize the value of disassembly processes across a wide range of products. Increasing legislation that may soon require mandatory recycling of many post-consumed goods and a desire to develop more environmentally benign end-of-life processes has fueled research into this concept. Traditionally, disassembly has been viewed as the reverse of assembly; however, a novel view considers just the opposite, leading to a more optimized disassembly process. Disassembly Modeling for Assembly, Maintenance, Reuse, and Recycling presents this approach in the context of the entire product life cycle. The book examines disassembly on the intermediate level, incorporating design for disassembly, concurrent design, and reverse logistics. In this first text to supply a comprehensive discussion of the theories and methodologies associated with this approach, the authors incorporate real world case examples to explore the three main areas of application of the theory: assembly optimization, maintenance and repair, and end-of-life processing. This is a timely resource for companies that wish to enact environmentally conscious systems efficiently. With an analysis of associated costs, system design requirements, advantages, and expected results, this is also an indispensable tool for researchers, mechanical and industrial engineers, and professionals involved in concurrent design.

Excellent book on Industrial Marketing.......2003-03-19
1) In industry, technicians are the kings. The marketing department is often seen as a cost center. Try to make your roles and responsibilities clear because you do not want to be stuck in limbo - doing endless errands for everyone. (pg 19)
2) Good comments on how to diagnose your situation (the company's marketing maturity, and your personal marketing experience) and create a feasible approach. Key: Don't panic and don't rush. Assess what is expected of you, who you can influence and what you can accomplish. (pg 28-30)
3) "Marketing is sometimes referred to as a matching process whereby we continue to refine our understanding of the market and adapt our product offer accordingly." (pg 47)
4) Make sure you strike the right balance between:
- doing the right things and doing things right
- watching the competitors and watching the customers
5) Four Ps (Supplier's) and Four Cs (Customer's)
- Product = Customer's Wants and Needs
- Price = Cost
- Place = Convenience
- Promotion = Communication (pg 53)
6) Characteristics of Consumer vs Industrial Markets
Clients....Many & dispersed..Few, concentrated
Market....Retail................Long & complex supply chain
Behavior..Personal...........Group decision, high buying power
Product...Standard...........Customized & complex
Price......No negotiation.....Negotiation
Place.....Retail................Direct & made to order (pg 60)
7) Understand the supply chain. Know your customers' customers.
8) Trust is critical. Try to differentiate with delivery reliability, technical service, maintenance and spare parts support and assistance in driving down customer's costs. (pg 67)
9) Create products that customers' want, not technical devices. "Marketing should aim to meet clients' expectations, and not substantially exceed them." (pg 79)
10) Finally, "Reasonable success is much better than glorious failure." (pg 92)
There are also numerous pages on portfolio analysis, product life-cycles, pricing strategies and tips on how to work with sales and technicians.

The U.S. Man-Made Fiber Industry: Its Structure and Organization since 1948
David I. Goldenberg Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275933601 |
Book Description
This work serves as a comprehensive update to Jesse W. Markham's 1952 industrial organization study, Competition in the Rayon Industry. It extends Markham's study to all large volume man-made fibers in a manner that will also be applicable to other industries. David Goldenberg offers new insights into the structure, price and nonprice behavior, and performance of a large and technically advanced industry. This study provides a practical test of industrial organization theory and performance, as well as a real-world examination of many of the issues most crucial to the man-made fibers industry. Goldenberg begins his work with an introduction and general summary that outline the study's major conclusions. Subsequent chapters provide a brief overview of the U.S. man-made fibers industry, and a detailed look at the numerous structural issues. Among the subjects covered are the conditions of supply and demand, the structures of the subindustries composing the larger fibers industry, and the structural determinants such as costs and economies of scale, existence, and integration. Two chapters focus on the price aspects of the industry's behavior, including price trends, cyclical and short-run behavior, price structures, and selling terms, as well as nonprice behavior. The final chapter examines the industry's performance in terms of its overall social benefits, productivity, and workability. This work will be an important resource for scholars and students in the industrial organization and industrial economics fields, as well as for public, academic, and business libraries.
