        Book Description

Nowhere is the role of the secretary more vital to the smooth functioning of the system than in the office of a school principal. But in spite of her importance (over 99% are women), traditional educational researchers have not approached this position as a valid topic of study.

Casanova - a former elementary school principal - examines the role of the school secretary, bringing recognition to a person who has been too long under-valued, under-paid and under-appreciated. She has broken new ground with an exploration of an occupation where women are the dominant force and on whom everyone depends, from students and parents to teachers and administrators.

        Book Description

Values and the sacred may seem to be strange bed-fellows with economics. This book shows that they are not only compatible, but essential elements of achieving immense economic productivity gains that can create a secure, abundant and caring future for all.

Advocates for community well-being, ecological health, and wiser patterns of living have long shied away from root issues of economics, because it seemed their ideas were insupportable by rigorous economic analysis. No more. Bender provides clear documentation that economics based on values, ecology, and the sacred out-performs conventional economics by an order of magnitude. In the process, our conventional economic tools such as "future discounting" and "present value accounting" are shown to be what they really are - ways to conceal the real costs of policies that benefit special interests.

Factor Ten Economics, which Bender pioneered in the early 1970s, is already bringing ten-fold improvement in energy efficiency and resource productivity. It has become public policy of many nations, international development organizations and leading businesses. These gains have been well documented in Paul Hawken and Amory and L. Hunter Lovins' best-selling Natural Capitalism that is creating seismic waves in the business world. Bender's new book shows, however, that resource productivity is only one dimension of Factor Ten Economics. Equally immense improvements are simultaneously possible in institutional and financial performance, personal and social well-being, and in planetary health and goals. Surprisingly, values and the sacred are key.

Bender shows that new perceptions, not new technologies, are what is needed to achieve most of these gains. He provides the key tools to obtain them - and perhaps most importantly, shows how totally different personal and community life is within this new economics. He cautions, however, that change of this magnitude may be a one-shot opportunity, and discusses what we can achieve with this wonderful gift.

The aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks has brought significant questioning of the direction our global culture has taken. Disparities of material wealth and poverty, questionable ethics used to maintain economic supremacy, and absence of spiritual dimensions in our culture appear to be central issues behind both religious fundamentalism and recent terrorism. Bender's latest work provides an unexpected path out of this quagmire. It is clear from what he shows us that we have the resources to make the whole world a success - erasing poverty, eliminating starvation, and ending battles over resources. It is time now for compassion and sharing, not greed. Wisely used, they can open a brighter world for us all. This is vital reading for all.

5 out of 5 stars "Factor 10" economic principles pioneered by the author.......2002-03-27

Learning To Count What Really Counts: The Economics Of Wholeness by award winning economist Tom Bender is a serious and profoundly instructive look at the economic "bottom line" from a fresh, important, insightful perspective: that of "Factor 10" economic principles pioneered by the author. The critical thread is that economic principles and sustainability can have a groundwork in compassion and sacred values, and furthermore, without this groundwork comes the inevitability of modern religious fundamentalism and terrorism. An at once both disturbing and hopeful analysis, all the more powerful because the original manuscript was completed just days before the events of September 11. Learning To Count What Really Counts is above all about the importance of getting more true enjoyment out of less clutter and waste, and finding true meaning and harmony in life rather than attempting to fill the void with mindless consumerism. A truly seminal and ground breaking study, Learning To Count What Really Counts is strongly recommended to students in the field of economics and an important, core title for economic studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

4 out of 5 stars If You Are A Start Up..........2001-06-26

I thought that this book would only be for big companies, such as Intel, but I was wrong. If you have a start up company and you want to enable yourself for future growth, don't hamstring yourself by leaving the composition and dynamics of your top management team to chance. Personally, I know of only one start up company that has actively used the kind of techniques and instruments such as the ones in this book to actively reflect on "how we work together". That company has survived the "bust" and is still expanding because of better decision making. This book is a roadmap for top management team building. It has useful tools, diagrams and chapters which are well laid out and easy to follow. The book is based on best in the world reasearch in this area and the writers have hands on experience in real world, leading edge companies. If there is one thing above all others that I found this book can give you, it is "awareness". Once aware of these issues, you can do something about them.

One of the biggest problems I run across as a Marketing Communications Manager is how people define their marketing and advertising goals. Often they mix marketing and advertising objectives and strategies. This book not only helps clarify these but gives excellent examples. In addition, it shows why setting specific goals is paramount to your success. How many times have you received a brief from marketing with the goal of increasing sales? Or decreasing churn? This book will help you prove your successes (and failures).

This book touches on some great areas - but can be quite vague.
It could be improved with further examples, and a straight forward description of ideas - then move into the more theoretical information.
There are a lot of details on the process/ reasoning behind the research degrees.
I have found other books to be more useful, though this is a reasonable source of information.

Concise, reader friendly, and useable. Many research method books manage to lose or confuse the reader within the first few chapters. This book deals with most of the major issues of social science research while maintaining a practical focus. Of particular use to research masters and PhD students.

This is an excellent book on research methods. I would recommend that any business school Ph.D. not think a second time about buying this one. An extensive literature review at the end was very useful, although some URLs mentioned are rather wimpy and no longer working.

                    Book Description

The nation's leading opinion makers converge to address technology and its impact on society and business
The Forbes ASAP annual Big Issue is the most important magazine special in all of high technology. It has been hailed as "the last great bastion of the essay" by author Stanley Crouch. It is historian Stephen Ambrose's favorite publication to write for, and Tom Wolfe has made it the home for more of his original essays than any other publication in the last decade. Each of the five Big Issues has tackled a burning social question as it relates to technology, including the new meaning of work, the changing nature of time in the digital age, the great convergence (work/play, public/private, science/religion), and what is true. And each issue brings together the best writers and thinkers in search of answers. Big Issue contributors have come from business (Bill Gates, Andrew Grove), science (E. O. Wilson, Stephen Jay Gould), literature (John Updike, Reynolds Price, Elmore Leonard), history (John Keegan, Jacques Barzun), politics (Gore Vidal, Peggy Noonan), sports (Muhammad Ali), and religion (the Dalai Lama). Sixty-three of the best essays from the first five Big Issues are complied in this new collection, with an original foreword by longtime Big Issue fan Peter Jennings.

Being a fan of Forbes and ASAP makes me somewhat partial. Oftentimes business books tend to wonder off into their own world of advice and author tainted views. Not so with Big Issues. It takes you to places you want to visit and places you never knew existed. Like "Lessons from the Top," by Thomas Neff and James Citrin, Big Issues offers advice and wisdom from many perspectives.

It's a book full of forest and trees on how the Internet has wedged its way into all our lives. Key chapters abound like Screw's Al Goldstein's `Cybersex Leaves Me Limp,' and Andy Grove's `Only the Productive Survive,' offer insight hard to find elsewhere. It's one of those rare books you can take with you and just open up to any point and read with interest. Like fine music, I will enjoy this read over and over again. I loved this book.

                      Book Description

Industry has grown to recognize the value of disassembly processes across a wide range of products. Increasing legislation that may soon require mandatory recycling of many post-consumed goods and a desire to develop more environmentally benign end-of-life processes has fueled research into this concept. Traditionally, disassembly has been viewed as the reverse of assembly; however, a novel view considers just the opposite, leading to a more optimized disassembly process. Disassembly Modeling for Assembly, Maintenance, Reuse, and Recycling presents this approach in the context of the entire product life cycle. The book examines disassembly on the intermediate level, incorporating design for disassembly, concurrent design, and reverse logistics. In this first text to supply a comprehensive discussion of the theories and methodologies associated with this approach, the authors incorporate real world case examples to explore the three main areas of application of the theory: assembly optimization, maintenance and repair, and end-of-life processing. This is a timely resource for companies that wish to enact environmentally conscious systems efficiently. With an analysis of associated costs, system design requirements, advantages, and expected results, this is also an indispensable tool for researchers, mechanical and industrial engineers, and professionals involved in concurrent design.

                        Book Description

Imagine a peaceable place of learning, where the total focus is on teaching and helping students learn. From superintendents to classroom teachers, this is what all education professionals want for their schools. Making School a Place of Peace gives you details on how to make nonviolence and peaceable behavior the norm in your school. The authors have included real-life examples and forms for assessing the culture and values of the school. They have included practical ways you can incorporate lessons about peace into the curriculum such as using examples from children's literature. Particularly useful are the resources for helping to promote peace as a way of life not just at school, but at home and in the community as well. Involvement of parents, teachers, and children is stressed as a key factor in bringing about these changes. The book contains such valuable resources as how to: * Get started on the road to a peaceable school * Work with your students' parents to make peace a plan for home * Confront the reality of teaching peace and use it as an element in your curriculum * Find help for your school in your community * Use children's literature in peace curricula * Expect peace as a way of life in your school Bey and Turner see peace not as the absence of conflict or violence, but as the practice of social harmony, cooperation, tolerance, and mutual respect. Written for practitioners at all levels as well as professors of education, this timely and thoughtful book can guide you in making school a place of peace.

                              3 out of 5 stars 1001 Ways to be a bit bored.......2007-08-26

I hate to say this since I have most of Lilly Walters' books and absolutely live by them in my consulting/speaking business, but this book held very few surprises or new ideas for me. For me, though, the best part and worth the price of the book was the Glossary of Terms. Totally invaluable.

1 out of 5 stars you can't tell this book by its title.......2005-10-18

This book is a major rip-off. Its title leads you to believe you'll get ideas that you can immediately put into action to generate relatively immediate sales. Allow me to quote some random examples:

#385: Focus your marketing efforts on those companies and industries that can afford to pay for your services.

#393: Market to your best bets first--those you are fairly sure will buy.

#766: Keep a map of your country and world map with time zones, zip codes, and telephone area codes.

                              #1189: Get it in writing.

She even includes a couple of tips on what to do if you receive a suspicious parcel -- a bomb, I presume.

The bomb is this book. Her tips are not about making more money. They're about walking and chewing gum at the same time. It's a great book for rank beginners. But she should change the title. The only reason why it gets any star at all is because Amazon won't allow us to give zero stars. I suppose she gets a star for good spelling.

5 out of 5 stars Public speaking your way to wealth.......2005-04-06

A terrific read. Lilly has compiled a detailed list of tips and tricks that would be helpful to anyone in the communication game. Experienced speakers will certainly find something in this book for them. I know i did, all that is left to do now is to public speak my way to wealth.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Brainstorming Profitable Ideas.......2003-12-24

Lilly Walters has assembled a collection of terrific ways to create new income streams, get more bookings, generate publicity and more. The book is a series of short tips and ideas that got my brain popping. A quick perusal left my copy dotted with sticky notes marking pages containing ideas I can use now and in the future. I am currently working through the book, a section at a time, putting the tips into action.

Although absolute beginners may want more detail for some tips, wherever you are in your speaking career you will certainly find some gems to help you become a better, more successful (and profitable!) speaker. Book Description

Industrial or business-to-business marketing places very specific demands on those responsible for it. Yet all too often the strengths of these managers are technical, founded on expertise and product knowledge. There is seldom any formal understanding of marketing principles and the business benefits they can bring. In such conditions perspectives are narrowed, opportunities are missed, and marketing remains a functional support activity rather than a strategic resource. Building on a basis of recent Cranfield research and their own extensive work with experienced practising managers, Paul Millier and Roger Palmer have devised the perfect solution. A complete reference and toolkit for managers in the field, Nuts, Bolts and Magnetrons showcases a wealth of examples from European industry, and provides the information and guidance industrial marketers need to develop and prosper. Readers will learn how to be not only functionally efficient, but also effective, by managing relationships within and outside the firm. If you are involved in industrial marketing then you must be properly equipped. Blending insight, information, and inspiration in equal measure, this book offers all you need for success - the Nuts, Bolts and Magnetrons of modern marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Industrial Marketing.......2003-03-19

This is an excellent resource for people just starting out in marketing of an industrial products (vs. fast moving consumer goods FMCG) company. Not only does it give you the right tools and models, it also give practical advice on simple steps to build influence and adjust smoothly to a new company.

                              1) In industry, technicians are the kings. The marketing department is often seen as a cost center. Try to make your roles and responsibilities clear because you do not want to be stuck in limbo - doing endless errands for everyone. (pg 19)

                              2) Good comments on how to diagnose your situation (the company's marketing maturity, and your personal marketing experience) and create a feasible approach. Key: Don't panic and don't rush. Assess what is expected of you, who you can influence and what you can accomplish. (pg 28-30)

                              3) "Marketing is sometimes referred to as a matching process whereby we continue to refine our understanding of the market and adapt our product offer accordingly." (pg 47)

                              4) Make sure you strike the right balance between:
                              - doing the right things and doing things right
                              - watching the competitors and watching the customers

                              5) Four Ps (Supplier's) and Four Cs (Customer's)
                              - Product = Customer's Wants and Needs
                              - Price = Cost
                              - Place = Convenience
                              - Promotion = Communication (pg 53)

                              6) Characteristics of Consumer vs Industrial Markets
                              Clients....Many & dispersed..Few, concentrated

                              Market....Retail................Long & complex supply chain
                              Behavior..Personal...........Group decision, high buying power
                              Product...Standard...........Customized & complex
                              Price......No negotiation.....Negotiation
                              Place.....Retail................Direct & made to order (pg 60)

                              7) Understand the supply chain. Know your customers' customers.

                              8) Trust is critical. Try to differentiate with delivery reliability, technical service, maintenance and spare parts support and assistance in driving down customer's costs. (pg 67)

                              9) Create products that customers' want, not technical devices. "Marketing should aim to meet clients' expectations, and not substantially exceed them." (pg 79)

                              10) Finally, "Reasonable success is much better than glorious failure." (pg 92)

There are also numerous pages on portfolio analysis, product life-cycles, pricing strategies and tips on how to work with sales and technicians.

                                Book Description

This work serves as a comprehensive update to Jesse W. Markham's 1952 industrial organization study, Competition in the Rayon Industry. It extends Markham's study to all large volume man-made fibers in a manner that will also be applicable to other industries. David Goldenberg offers new insights into the structure, price and nonprice behavior, and performance of a large and technically advanced industry. This study provides a practical test of industrial organization theory and performance, as well as a real-world examination of many of the issues most crucial to the man-made fibers industry. Goldenberg begins his work with an introduction and general summary that outline the study's major conclusions. Subsequent chapters provide a brief overview of the U.S. man-made fibers industry, and a detailed look at the numerous structural issues. Among the subjects covered are the conditions of supply and demand, the structures of the subindustries composing the larger fibers industry, and the structural determinants such as costs and economies of scale, existence, and integration. Two chapters focus on the price aspects of the industry's behavior, including price trends, cyclical and short-run behavior, price structures, and selling terms, as well as nonprice behavior. The final chapter examines the industry's performance in terms of its overall social benefits, productivity, and workability. This work will be an important resource for scholars and students in the industrial organization and industrial economics fields, as well as for public, academic, and business libraries.
