                        Book Description

A practical, hands-on reference to the latest tools and techniques of demand forecasting

Presenting an up-to-date overview of demand forecasting, this comprehensive primer is an ideal resource for those who need in-depth information and hands-on training. Covering the latest developments in field techniques—and featuring software that includes helpful short-term forecasting models and inventory control scenarios—Demand Forecasting and Inventory Control includes complete details on:

forecasting is a crucial method for managing inventory control. It is an essential skill for all operations and manufacturing professionals, as well as those professionals in distribution and logistics. This practical reference offers an up-to-date and thoroughly accessible overview of this key concept, covering both theory and practice from current demand forecasting methods. The author, a seasoned expert in the field, provides complete details on the links between forecasts produced by analyzing demand data and the various methods by which this information—in conjunction with cost material on stocked items—is used to establish workable parameters for the most commonly used inventory control systems.

In Demand Forecasting and Inventory Control, Colin D. Lewis takes an in-depth look at the family of short-term forecasting models that are based on the exponentially weighted average and its many variants. With sample data that includes calculations necessary for hands-on applications, Lewis takes you step by step through a variety of essential processes, among them how to forecast in stationary demand situations, plus how to relate forecast and demand data to specific time periods. You'll also learn how to assess the validity and accuracy of selected forecasting models. In addition, Lewis examines a group of medium-term forecasting models based on a time-series, curve-fitting approach. The group encompasses, among other key topics, regression analysis, straight-line trend forecasts, and seasonality.

Additional sections on inventory control investigate the re-order level policy and re-order cycle policy, illustrating how they can be operated at minimum cost while offering a high level of customer service. Special consideration is given to the hybrid (s/S) inventory control policy and to the situation characterized by such items as slow moving spares—where the demand for a single unit can be expressed by an average interval between issues as long as 20 years.

To aid your understanding of the techniques and methods described, Demand Forecasting and Inventory Control contains a user-friendly computer learning package called OPSCON (Operations Planning and Control). Aimed at practitioners, as well as students who want to understand the processes behind the software they use, OPSCON features a number of short-term forecasting models and inventory control scenarios that enable you to establish solid policy parameters using either your own data or demonstration data.

Packed with helpful examples, easy-to-read graphs, and sample calculations, Demand Forecasting and Inventory Control is an indispensable primer for everyone who needs to get a firm grasp on the principles, fundamentals, and applications of this increasingly vital concept.

1 out of 5 stars Buy a General Operations Textbook instead.......2002-03-21

While the back of the book jacket claims this book is a practical guide, it is not. All of the formulas are there, but there is no discussion of the business processes that surrround the tools. There are no real world examples from any industry. Furthermore, based on my experience with forecasting in a variety of industries, the author's statements as to acceptable errors for useful forecasts are not realistic. One chart in the book contains a plot of twelve years of demand. TWELVE YEARS! In todays marketplace who has twelve years of demand history for a product? My advice, buy a general purpose operations textbook instead - You'll get just as much out of the forecasting section.

                              Book Description

Money, Markets, and the State provides in-depth explanations behind the various successes and failures of the economic policies of social democratic governments in five Western European countries: Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands. Dr. Notermans examines these economic systems from the inflation of the early twenties, through the Great Depression of the thirties, and then continues his analysis up to present-day mass unemployment. Drawing on a wide range of historical and statistical sources, Dr. Notermans argues that the fate of social democratic economic policy hinges critically on the political and institutional success of maintaining price stability.

                                    4 out of 5 stars "Excellent subject--Lacks punch & expediency".......2001-08-08

This was a very enjoyable read, and did a fair job of covering the aspects of charisma--and how to raise our levels of it. Charisma is a real thing. It is an eviable attribute of actors, athletes, musicians, wealthy business people and others. Are we born with it? Possibly--however, I, as well as the author believe each of us can increase our level of charisma. This book was chock-full of very useful information. My only complaint was, after each example the author threw in an anecdote. An example or explanation of the topic presented is an excellent way to write--when done tastefully. The author embellished each and every topic discussed. The only problem with writing in this manner is, it sidetracks the reader rather than focusing on the topic. After reading hundreds of self-help books I have come to the conclusion that the best of their genre focus on direct principles rather than stories about the author or others. It is very true that with a high level of charisma each one of us would accomplish more than we could imagine. I applaud the author on addressing this topic--and do highly recommend this book.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A very wise book.......2000-06-24

Not only is Operation Charisma a thorough review of many aspects involved in the development of charisma, it is also a highly insightful manual on the underlying events that occur in human interaction. There is wisdom in the numerous examples which illustrate life situations where a more charismatic approach would have created a big difference. This book has truly helped me overcome my shyness and lower my anxiety level when addressing others.

The results are in. The evidence has been analyzed. Research shows that the lack of enterprise-wide training is the biggest reason for ERP implementation failures. It is the single most important precursor to achieving success. Integrated Learning for ERP Success is the first resource to offer a specifically defined, comprehensive method for planning, delivering, and evaluating ERP training efforts. It even includes formulas for determining training return on investment. The Learning Requirements Planning (LRP) process presented involves a six-step enterprise-level instructional design model that when implemented correctly assures success. If you would rather have a root canal than oversee an ERP implementation, you are not alone. But like avoiding a root canal, avoiding ERP implementation only causes more pain. This book eases the implementation pain. It shows you how a formal plan for learning will increase the productivity of the ERP implementation team, shorten overall implementation time, and substantially decrease implementation costs. It also provides a discussion on how an ERP implementation can be used as a catalyst for lifelong organizational learning. Implementing an ERP system can cost three to ten times the actual software purchase price. You can't afford to waste money or time in the areas of ERP education. Integrated Learning for ERP Success shows you how to create learning-focused ERP implementations that provide substantial savings and the competitive advantage.

                                        Book Description

Inter-firm relations are not new. But fast developments in technology and globalization have led to increased opportunities for international alliances, and an upsurge in the interest in inter-organizational relations. With the time ripe for a unified theory of collaboration, Inter-firm Collaborations surveys the current field, connects differing perspectives and answers questions about who should collaborate, why, and how.

Emphasizing learning and innovation, this book offers an integrated account of the key issues in the design and management of inter-firm relations and networks. It takes a uniquely interdisciplinary approach, bringing together perspectives from economics, sociology and management to offer a new kind of book on this subject.

Supporting theory, the book includes illustrative case examples taken from a variety of firm, network and industry types.

Coherent and wide-reaching, Inter-firm Collaborations provides students and academics in economics, business, sociology, social psychology and economic geography with the tools required to understand this topical and highly relevant subject.

                                        Book Description

The authors set out to take mathematical modeling a couple of steps further by emphasizing the decision making process and the communication of results. They approach each topic via a narrative of a business situation and illustrate the model building process, taking great care to emphasize the model's assumptions and limitations. Each chapter is then organized around a clearly defined set of pedagogical features designed to guide the student through the management science process.

Used this book as part of a MBA computer class. The website makes it easy to work on different computers since Excel files can be downloaded from website or taken from the CD included with the book.

Exercises were good and followed most of the material in the book. Almost all the material applied to "real world" situations.

This is a nobel effort. to try to do a very hard thing. The author however is very hard to follow and at times the explanations drifts into incoherance. Also, I think the author may be too brilliant to write for the average student. He might be better served by having a grad student or military trained person break down the book into coherant steps. This book has some gems of useful info, trapped in some bad explainations. The next version of this may be a truly great textbook. My advice to the author is to simplify and go step by step. Delete text and runon paragraphs where possible. If you take a class based on this book, insist on a lab and a helpful grad student.

I was a student at Cal State Fullerton, where these professors teach. This is the worst textbook I have ever read. The text is poorly written. The book doesn't read well and has many typos. I would have expected more from the Management Science Department Chair.

                                        Book Description

Based on a profoundly important six-year study by the Center for the Quality of Management (CQM), "Integrated Management Systems" shows how successful organizations accomplish something unbelievably powerful: Creating their own particular ways of executing the scientific method. The authors worked with the cooperation of some of America's largest companies - Teradyne, Hewlett-Packard, Eastman Chemical, Ritz-Carlton -- and of non-profit organizations including top hospitals and the U.S. Navy. They were surprised to find how radically successful systems differed from one organization to the next.

Yet the core of each was universal: Each organization had designed a system that gathered data about the organization's particular problems, developed theories, tested the theories, and finally documented and shared the results throughout the organization. Each successful organization's methods were unique much as the methods of each successful discipline within the sciences are unique. But less successful organizations had nothing comparable. And the processes through which the leaders in these organizations had gotten them on the right path had a great deal in common.

If you read this book in conjunction with Kent Bowen's Harvard Business Review article 'Decoding the DNA of the Toyota Production System (Sept. Oct. 1999) you will get more out of both. The language and case studies are a little different, but the purpose is the same: to develop a system to utilize the scientific method in problem solving at every level of the organization. This book can take you through this complex world and tie together all the fragments we've been studying for years. Whether it's called lean manufacturing or operating systems or TQM, they are all systems that tie tools together in a common purpose. Understand: (1) how to tie it together, (2) how to teach and learn about it, and (3) how to implement it. This isn't a book with just one idea rehashed over and over; the devil is in the details, and this is filled with useful details that have been tested and proven effective. Before you set about trying to change or design your organization, read this book first. The only thing that I would have liked to see to make it better is a chapter on Toyota, the most benchmarked Integrated Management System in the world.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction for beginers.......1998-06-06

This was a carefully considered and well balanced introduction the the subject of Strategic Management and the role that Information Systems can play in an organisations approach.

The concepts are brought up from basics and although an understanding of organisational behaviour, management theories and change management concepts are helpful they are not required to understand Robson's book.

She introduces the major players int the field well, and puts their work clearly and easily within the reach of beginners. An example of this is Porter's five forces of competition, Robsons cuts through his waffle to outline the theory clearly.

Although the examples used are primarily relevant to the UK the concepts are put so anyone could understand them.

The book is well laid out and uses diagrams and charts wherever possible.

This book/text is one of the most complete treatments of the total Information Systems environment from the strategic management perspective. It answers the question: What tools are available to IS/IT managers to evaluate, analyze, monitor, and manage Information Technology to achieve sustainable strategic advantage? An extensive use of tables and diagrams makes it a wonderful reference book. Also, the format is straigtforward - simple paperback, black & white with line drawings. This makes for a compact, but easy to navigate reference book. The current 1993 edition is somewhat dated and I hope a new edition is in the works. I am using this as a reference book for an accelerated Information Technology Management program I am in currently developing for Daniel Webster College in Nashua, NH, USA.

                                          Book Description

This fully revised and updated second edition of Information Systems Strategic Management continues to provide an accessible yet critical analysis of the strategic aspects of information systems. The second edition continues to provide a working text for Information Systems Strategy (ISS), covering the relevant practical and theoretical material supported by extensive case studies, student activities and problem scenarios. The ISS issues will be fully integrated into current thinking about corporate strategy, addressing the fact that a range of emerging strategic issues are often ill-addressed in IS strategy books, which also fail to differentiate between IT (the application of technology) and IS, the participative, human-centered approaches to information and knowledge management. Specific changes include; Expansion and internationalization of case studies Broader focus beyond social and critical theory New chapters on Strategy and e-business; Strategic Management as a technical or social process; Strategic implications of information security; Applications portfolio and technology management The focus on strategic issues and the integration of IT and IS issues will ensure this text is ideal for MBA students studying MIS, as well as being suitable for MSC students in IS/IT.
