A must for all professionals in special education.......2002-01-27

In, It Even Happens in "Good" Schools: Responding to Cultural Diversity in Today's Classrooms, Dr. Obiakor uses pertinent stories/cases that expose real life experiences in individuals and questions what it means to be a truly good school. His stories/cases vividly and painstakingly note the slow progress in systemic changes designed to address the issues of diversity and exceptionality. Essentially, he describes current practices in schools where students are misidentified, misassessed, mislabeled, miscategorized, misplaced, and misinstructed. As he points out, fairness, equity, appropriate treatment, and quality are scarce virtues in today's supposed "good" schools. Dr. Obiakor advances the pivotal argument that "good" schools ought to be learning communities and places where the potential of all students are maximized. In such communities, education takes on a holistic approach by considering each student's academic, social, emotional, and cultural needs. He continues the argument that goodness is defined by how a "good" school addresses "diversity". Indeed, in this book, he advocates the no-one size fits all technique because of intra- and inter individual differences in students.

We find this book to be a great contribution to the field. It details current classroom practices by all educators, and simultaneously calls for a change. This text has several unique qualities and strengths. It is not only an insightful text but also an eye opener with vivid comments, stories/cases, and practical solutions to issues/problems created by diversity. Dr. Obiakor suggests four basic operational dimensions that must characterize the 21st century dream school for the "good" school phenomenon to be a reality. The "good" school must function with a comprehensive support model, be a learning community, a place to master the craft of teaching, and foster a multidimensional teaching and learning process. In addition, the "good" school must not be defined puritanically. Such schools must embrace diversity in all programs and respond to changes in pedagogical methods. In our opinion, perhaps, what is most interesting and enlightening is Dr. Obiakor's use of his personal experiences, events, and that of other real people to capture the essence of the "good" school phenomenon. This easy to read text can be used by all education prgorams desiring to respond to cultural diversity in this century. This will be a great addition to personal, public, private, and/or agency libraries.

A must for administrators, educ. students, and teachers........2001-10-31

Dr. Festus Obiakor has taken previous research and writings of many of the top authorities in the field of education and addressed the problems of the past and the hope of the future within the education paradigm. He examines the cultural and racial impact of previous applications of programing within primary and secondary schools. He addresses teacher effective communication skills when interacting with all children of multiple racial groups, although he does not force this on teachers by calling it "Communications 101." Possibly the greatest and most impressive aspect of this book is that Dr. Obiakor does not only point out the past, and some present, problems in education, but he introduces helpful suggestions in responding to these problems. This is a unique quality of this book.

Dr. Obiakor introduces various real cases to emphasize various concepts and situations that can no longer be tolerated. Then he approaches each situation with suggestions to address similar problems that may arise or presently exist at a particular school. This is a powerful resource that should be on every administrator's and teacher's reading list. With these types of resources becoming available, the "Blame Game" is slowly being discovered as that monster preventing needed change in American education. Another thought while reading this book is Dr. Obiakor's unique and progressive paradigm shift from "thinking in the box" to "thinking outside the box." This is an important approach when addressing many of the problems that exist in public and private education. In other words, if the system is broke fix it! It is obvious that the approaches in yesteryear are no longer the way of the present and future.

In closing I think it is important to point out that this book focuses on the children. These children are from various cultures and racial groups and as such view the world differently. These differences are not so unique that the basic needs in life are unique in themselves, such as, need for interaction with parents, a show of love and affection by significant adults, clothing, food, a "home," a sense of security, etc. Rather, these differences are unique in the way they view authority, systems, and generally the world around them. Dr. Obiakor does an excellent job of addressing these later differences.

My recommendation is that schools of education, teachers, education administrators, and individuals that interact with children as part of their profession should have this book, and review this book on a need basis. This is an invaluable resource.

Excellent snippets - history and economics together.......2007-09-21

I didnt realise how huge a topic this is. Christeen has provided a birds eye view of the landscape, with some tantilising swoops in some interesting areas. For someone new to the area it is enticing them to try to find where to learn more. I found the blend of history, economics, politics and psychology appealed greatly. The language is clear, such that a non-astrologer gets a lot of understanding of the guidance that can be obtained from the astrological study. Biggest problem - too short, have to go find out how to learn more ! Great readable introduction.

Astrological predictions for the decade.......2007-08-11

Whether you are a professional investor or hobbyist, a business person or an ordinary person who likes to look ahead, this book will serve all! It is a very interesting read & does not trip itself up by using astrological technical jargon. For the astrologers, it is a relief to see it is not a cook-book astrology book but an authentic attempt by the author to vision the coming decade in business & financial terms by referring to astrological themes. I could not put the book down wondering what would be unveiled next, until I shook myself realising that the book is dealing with future possibilities on our planet!
By referring back to past events politically & in business, where similar future planetary configurations were evident, the author gives us reinforcement of her predictions & a sense of credibility. They say forewarned is forearmed & if you read this book, you will have no excuses, if you invest in a losing industry or don't gauge the correct timing for lucrative investments.
I was also very excited by the author's predictions around the Internet in the coming years & the concept of the 'global village' becoming a reality. She manages to keep her grip on reality throughout & speaks about both negative & positive implications of events & gains. This is not a doomsday book most importantly, and I felt that I was more informed by reading it.
To quote the author: 'The quest for greater understanding comes as a result of thinking differently. While the final burst of original thinking and subsequent breakthrough correlates, in these instances, with Uranus's movement through Aquarius, it is the movement of other planets that stimulate the imagination. Indeed it may be that, at a later time, it will be recognised by scientists that 'Energy follows Thought'. As yet, appreciation of this important concept is still in its infancy.'
Astrology & astrological information has been isolated by astrological jargon & terminology as have unfortunately astrologers. They are visited by only the enlightened few who are aware of what invaluable information can be gained about the timing of events on earth by looking at the dances in the heavens! The majority of the business community do not access this incredibly helpful information & are often taken unawares by events politically & financially. This book is groundbreaking as it bridges this gulf & makes this information readable & understandable by all. Using the information that 'The Financial Universe' provides will support us in having a smoother ride in any potential bumps we may come across in the coming decade.
The book also deals with sun spot activity & gives very user friendly interpretations that has left me wanting to watch & follow this phenomenon to see how it correlates with happenings on earth. This really whetted my apetite for more information!
I would like to sum up with some quotes from the book:
'The end of the first decade of the millennium offers a platform for change. Global warfare is a distinct possibility, yet this is not the only possible outcome. A fascinating compendium for astrology buffs.......2004-11-05

It deals specifically with using planetary bodies to predict cycles in the marketplace, both positive and negative. Offering suggestions and warnings that potentially reverberate up through the year 2020, The Financial Universe even contemplates the astrological sign of America as a nation, and considers the implications of this birth sign on the future of American finances as a whole as surely as what this means for one's own private investments. A fascinating compendium for astrology buffs, although lacking in economic advice other than astrological forecasting - the reader is already presumed to be familiar with the basics and the risks of the financial market.

Whooeee! Some reading!.......2007-01-08

I'm in a Good Manufacturing Practices environment and my manager, the head of Manufacturing Quality Assurance, kept mentioning this book and referencing it in her Standard Operating Procedure documents. It's expensive, but it is a textbook and a reference book. This book has been the gold standard for 20 years or so. You'll want to read through it completely. Then, after that, it is good reading to keep in your car or work desk for those times when you have a few minutes to spare. Keep reviewing the information to stay fresh. This is a recent edition with update for Quality standards.

Don't talk about it over pizza and beer with your friends on Friday night though. It probably won't help you get a date!!

In the twentieth century there have been five major recessions: two in the interwar period, and three more starting 1973, 1979, and 1989. This book focuses on events in the UK, but sets them in their international context and makes frequent comparisons with other countries. Major recessions happened at a similar time in all major countries, and the lessons are general. Three main conclusions are reached: (1) major recessions reflect abrupt fallings off in demand, not supply; (2) these are due to identifiable demand shocks and by swings in consumer and business confidence which amplify the direct effects of demand shock; (3) major recessions are not predictable. In the final chapter, Christopher Dow puts forward an insider's view on how to avoid future severe recessions: action must be taken to control booms, which if uncontrolled will lead to a period of bust, and once a major recession has begun, fiscal and monetary policy must be adjusted to mitigate the downturn.
