      Book Description

Innovation is the key to gaining and maintaining a competitive advantage in the business world. Using multi-functional research from economics, organizational theory, general management and marketing, and strategy literature, Innovation Management, 2/e, provides a systematic approach to the strategies and processes that underlie the financial results of innovation. Designed to meet the increasing number of courses in innovation management, the text provides full coverage of this vitally important area of business. Drawing from his extensive professional and academic experience, Allan Afuah shows the relationship between innovation, a management function, and profitability, a financial function. He creates a framework that encompasses the basic questions of the "who, what, when, and where" of innovation, combining the latest theoretical discussion with abundant examples. In this second edition, Afuah explicitly incorporates coverage of the Internet as a technological change and offers an entirely new chapter, "Strategies for Sustaining Profits." The text takes a unique multi-functional approach that integrates the important contributions of economics, organizational theory, marketing, and finance to innovation management. This approach provides students with a full presentation of appropriate management theory and detailed coverage of practical concerns such as the role of government regulation, choosing a profit site, and the transfer of innovation. The impact of the public and international sectors is highlighted with chapters on globalization, innovation in emerging economies, and the role of government in promoting innovation. In addition to a strong analytical and theoretical foundation, the book offers many pedagogical examples. Most chapters conclude with short practice cases designed to supplement the numerous examples within each chapter. These cases are followed by a list of key terms and questions to stimulate discussion. Innovation Management, 2/e, is an ideal text for business school programs and also provides guidance for executives and managers seeking a better understanding of the value of innovation.

This book was recommended during my MBA at LUISS in Rome as the best possible reference for those who are interested in developing a thorough knowledge about Innovation and Corporate Strategy. It provides a complete overview on the subject, starting from which kind of company is more likely to innovate, how to overcome market uncertainties, what kind of human resources and network relationships you need to use, how to finance innovation and so on. The explanation is so fluid and the terminology so plain it could be easily read in a couple of days. Some useful case studies are also included. The only missing element is the strong emphasis on the IT sector. It would have been absolutely useful to include more cases on manifacturing and services companies. However, it should be considered one of the best available textbooks for Postgraduate students.

"I hate to lose. And what I really hate about it is that it takes exactly the same effort to lose as it does to win. So, if you're going to make that effort, why not make the effort to win?"
--Tom Whidden, three-time America's Cup winner, president of North Marine Group

America's Cup winner Peter Isler shows how the skills and strategies used in professional sailing apply equally well to competition, teamwork, and success in the world of business.

Some of the most prominent and successful CEOs and executives in America are sailors--and with good reason. In both business and sailing, only the best-led, best-trained, most highly motivated teams win. In At the Helm, two-time America's Cup winner Peter Isler translates the secrets of success in the fast-paced world of grand-prix sailboat racing into a series of specific lessons that managers and businesspeople can apply to their day-to-day jobs. In the world of business and sailing, building a successful "team" takes years of planning, training, practice, and cooperation, with an absolute commitment to winning.

Liberally sprinkled with entertaining, insightful, and cautionary stories from the worlds of sailing and business, At the Helm shows why it is essential to be able to change course quickly; how to "stack the deck" in your favor; how to plan for the unexpected. In addition, Peter includes a section on assessing your strengths and weaknesses, and offers suggestions on how to become a better "sailor."

The first book to apply the strategies required for putting together a world-class sailing crew to the world of business, At the Helm is the perfect mix of business and pleasure.

                4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read.......2003-03-15

Overall I enjoyed the book. Different sections focused in on specific events that had occurred in the world of yachting and how the lessons learned could be applied to a business enviroment. While there may not be anything earth shattering in the book, it does demonstrate that there are a core group of values that can be universal.

                4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-02-24

Champion sailor Peter Isler (with help from business writer Peter Economy) shows how victory in sailing's America's Cup race demonstrates lessons that can be applied to success in business. The same practices that contribute to winning the sailing race also lead to business triumphs. Isler distills the principles of good sailing into seven key rules. These fairly familiar rules include making a total commitment, creating a strong team effort, being ready to change, leveraging every opportunity to your advantage, expecting the unexpected, pushing the limits and having the right inner attitude. However, the parallels between sailing and business make the book especially interesting, as do Isler's compelling examples from his sailing experiences. He also includes apt quotes from other sailors with business backgrounds. We at getAbstract.com (who are bravely resisting the urge to make ocean-going puns here) recommend this book not only to top executives, but also to general business readers, especially those who like sailing. Ahoy.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on leadership.......2000-12-31

I really liked this book. I never realized just how much of a business sailboat racing is, or that it costs $60 million to run an America's Cup campaign. That's more money than most small businesses will ever see in a decade! Anyway, the authors have written a great book about some of the world's top businesspeople, who just happen to be some of the world's top sailors, too. Ted Turner, Roy Disney, Elizabeth Myers -- they're all here -- and they all have terrific lessons in business leadership to teach, and for us to learn. Buy this book! You'll learn a lot, and you'll have a lot of fun doing it!

2 out of 5 stars If you don't sail you may not want to read it........2000-10-03

Well it had a lot inspiring teamwork and hardwork ethics sort of stuff that I see in so many sports/business books, but the importance of many events was lost on me. Interesting tales no doubt for sailors.

4 out of 5 stars Sailing is analogous with life.......2000-04-29

This book solidifies many beliefs I have had throughout life that sailing prepares one well for all aspects of life, including the business world. Peter has selected a great group of successful businessmen who have great stories to tell. This book will be used as a gift to several of my clients come Christmastime.

As a Star sailor, my favorite story involves Malin Burnham retiring from a race for hitting a mark even though no one else witnessed the event. It cost him the Star World Championship, yet he never thought twice about doing it any other way. This is a great example of an era when ethics and a man's word was everything. We can only hope that it may become that way once again.

Thanks, Peter for a very good book.

                    Book Description

This is a history of America’s use of wage and price controls from colonial times to Richard Nixon’s experiment with controls in the 1970s. It explores the impact of controls on prices and productivity, side-effects such as the growth of black markets and the expansion of government, and the relationship between controls and monetary policy. The central conclusion is that, contrary to the conventional wisdom, there are situations where the net effect of controls can be positive. In particular, temporary controls may reduce the unemployment and lost output usually associated with disinflation.

                      Book Description

William Castle, for instance, was a master promoter. In one scheme involving The Tingler, Vincent Price warns in the movie that "the only way to stop the monster is to scream. That's the signal to the projectionist to throw the switch. Under ten or twelve seats were some electric motors, war surplus things that Castle got a bargain on. The motors vibrated the seat, in the hope of scaring a scream out of someone. Just in case it didn't Castle planted someone in the audience to get the screams rolling." This book is about flamboyant promotion, the con artist side of the movie world-everything the ballyhoo boys did to separate the customer from the price of a movie ticket-Emergo, HypnoVista, 3-D, Wide Screen, Cinemagic, Duo-Vision, Dynamation, Smell-O-Vision, plenty more. Supporting the text are 107 photos and illustrations, some never-before-published, and a filmography.

Beyond Ballyhoo is a fantastic look at the history of movie gimmicks. The book starts at the beginning with Edison's Kinetoscope and moves on to discuss the emergence of sound films. But it doesn't stop there. Mark Thomas McGee mixes anecdotes and history nearly flawlessly as he focuses on later trends such as CinemaScope, Cinerama and just about everything else imaginable.

3-D is given an entire chapter, filled with the history of the process, as well as fascinating information on the 13 different versions of the 3-D system that were used. Another chapter focuses on the great showmen Kroger Babb and William Castle. And yet another picks up on the odds and ends such as theatrical promotional hand-outs like witch-deflectors, life insurance policies and cannibalistic plant seeds.

One of the best chapters in the book breaks down the cheap gimmicks that appeared in the 50's and 60's in an encyclopedic manner. The histories of gimmicks such as CineMagic, Duo-Vision, PsychoRama and many, many others are explained as are the processes themselves. The many William Castle gimmicks are explained in this chapter, so you'll never confuse Percepto with Illusion-O again.

The final chapter is an interesting yet unsatisfying finale to the book. Here vintage radio spots are fully transcribed presumably in order to give readers a feel for the promotion of the films as they actually occurred. Although interesting, without the manic and melodramatic voice-overs accompanying the text, the feel for these are lost. This chapter doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the book and seems to be filler. The only other drawback to the book is that it could have used a glossary of terms at the back of the book. Although I use this book quite often, it is a pain to have to flip to the index to look up a movie or a gimmick and then have to search for it within the text and an alphabetical dictionary would have made an enjoyable book into a handy reference guide. But aside from these minor flaws, this book is essential to film historians and fans of gimmicky camp classics.

3 out of 5 stars An overly light introduction.......2000-06-19

This book is one of those written for managers, where only a vague explanation is made. In my opinion, a new title is needed since at the end of reading it, you don't know how to make simulations. You get a handle on some uses of simulation and some pitfall and mistakes but in the end, the book is overly superficial.

5 out of 5 stars Introducing engineers and students to simulation.......1999-02-04

This superbly written book provides a cogent and clear introduction to simulation. The authors (Harrell and Tumay, both of broad and deep engineering expertise and practical experience) provide an overview of the concepts of discrete-process simulation, a rich array of examples illustrating the business "bottom-line" reasons justifying simulation studies, an road map to successful use of simulation (with annotations of the pitfalls), and a wide-ranging array of examples drawn from actual business and engineering practice. I have successfully used this seminal book to help both working engineers and engineering students understand simulation, its methods and importance.

                          Book Description

Here is a comprehensive guide to the incorporation of computer simulation in all levels of the planning function of an organization. Writing for managers of planning, planners, and programmers, the author enables readers to gain an overall understanding of the potential role of simulation in planning, to apply simulation to their own particular needs, and to translate planning concepts into computer instructions. Nersesian demonstrates that for manager, planner, and programmer alike, simulation is not difficult in concept nor complicated to put into practice. The author argues that simulation is a necessary activity in a planning environment characterized by uncertain futures and rapidly changing conditions. The book is organized into separate chapters, each of which acts as a case study of an aspect in the use of simulation. The synopsis that begins every chapter provides the manager of a planning operation with an appreciation of the general application of simulation to one facet of planning. The chapters themselves focus on particular situations which might befall a planner within the general application of simulation to the planning process. Special appendices--designed to aid programmers who have not had much previous experience in setting up simulation programs--follow each chapter and provide descriptive material and the applicable simulation program. As a comprehensive yet easily understood guide to the benefits of utilizing simulation in the planning process, this book will be an invaluable resource for planners, corporate executives, and programmers.

This is a very good book on managment. I read this book and enjoyed it.
The only reason I rated it 3 and not 5 is because I'm not very interested in managment. I don't want my recommendations to full of manamgent books.
I'm studying computer science and this was the text for a required class. It is a very good book though.

                                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inofrmative and Accurate........2004-04-30

I am a Computer Science Engineer, This book is an excellent entry level source for data networks. It is easy to read and follow. The writer implicitly knows the subject very well and is able to convey the knowledge in a way it is not difficult for non-technical readers. It provides useful in formation for technical readers as well. I will recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing about data networks from scratch.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Very Good Beginner's Overview.......2003-03-01

This is a very good overview book with enough details to get the beginner going. Takes one from zero networking knowledge to the point where they can understand many aspects of data networking, and leaves them at a point where additional research can be self-directed.

Many of the callers on our tech support hotline would benefit from this one.

If you're already a year or two into networking, this isn't for you... but for a rank beginner, it's great.

A very informative book for beginners and ones like myself that need a refresher course now and again. This was very easy to understand and I have recommended it to my staff to help in their training. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn from the ground up. Five stars!!!!!
