*Our credit rating codes are indicators of probable ability to pay. They are based on business demographic factors such as number of employees, years in business, industry stability and barriers to entry, and government data. While they do not reflect actual payment history, the ratings are a good starting point. We recommend that these ratings should not be the sole factor used in making a credit decision. You must obtain more information from bank and trade references, local credit bureaus, or other sources before extending credit. We will not be liable for any losses resulting from the use of this information.

                        Book Description

The Researcher's Toolkit is a practical rather than an academic text for all those undertaking, perhaps for the first time, small-scale research. Written by an experienced team of practising researchers, it covers the entire research process - from designing and submitting a research proposal through to its completion. This book is suitable for all researchers, but it particularly designed from those practitioner-based researchers from the fields of education, social work, nursing, criminal justice and community work.

                        Book Description

This book argues that in order to succeed in uncertainty and continual change, organizations need to create new perspectives and learn from the chaos within which they operate. This new edition focuses on this radically different approach to strategic management.

5 out of 5 stars Provoking Us Again.......2000-04-23

There is much new in the latest edition of Ralph Stacey's management text. Of special merit is his challenge to those interested in understanding human organizations as complex adaptive systems to remember that these organizations are comprised of humans, not computer agents or ants. He asks us to be wary of simplistic transfers of complexity principles into the management domain. He then offers the theory of "relationship psychology" as an alternative and explores its implications for understanding the mind and healthy, creative organizational dynamics, putting the human back in the complex adaptive, or as he suggests, responsive, system.

Ralph Stacey has done more than any other management theorist to examine the intersection of complexity science and organizational thinking. He has been intelligently, provocative and challenging all along and has helped this intersection advance. You'll always want to stay in touch with what he is saying.

                              Book Description

Herbert Hoover, as Secretary of Commerce, and Benjamin Strong, as Governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, played a critical role in the formulation of American monetary policy during the 1920s. Yet little attention has been given to the relationship between them--at first cooperative, then increasingly one of conflict and factionalism--or to the impact of that relationship on policy formulation. This book sheds new light on their roles in policy making and relates those roles to larger conflicts over where policy should be made, how the Federal Reserve System should be structured, and the balance that should be struck between international, national, and regional considerations. Focusing on the Hoover-Strong relationship from a political rather than a purely economic perspective, the book's scope includes both domestic and international aspects of Federal Reserve policy formulation. New sources have enabled the author to provide both fresh details and a broader interpretation. Elaborating on the belief that the Depression resulted from policies developed during the autumn of 1927, the author contends that the foundation for those policies was laid with America's decision to underwrite the Dawes plan, the decision to underwrite England's return to the gold standard, and the involvement in European monetary stabilization--all issues over which Hoover and Strong disagreed.

5 out of 5 stars Silvano Wueschner - Genius. Period. .......2005-09-15

Dearest Reader, do not let the negativity of the previous reviews deter you from giving this wonderful tome a fighting chance. Dr. Wueschner's account of the gripping struggle of early economists to accomplish the things that economists should be expected to accomplish is an enlightening tale for all eight people who are interested in the history of monetary policy. Although he may look exactly like Andy Sippowitz from TV's "NYPD Blue," Wueschner is no boorish dunce, and his works are worthy of careful consideration.

Without any rational structure of analysis, this book piles high the trivia. Please, all "academic" authors out there, don't just list facts. Give the reader who has paid for the book some degree of intellectually complex analysis. One gets the impression that books are generated to credential promotions, not the enhance knowledge.

This book is without structure or conceptualization. Monetary policy is an important topic, but the author has not addressed it in a worthy manner. Too many questions are left unanswered. How was monetary policy approached by Strong and Hoover? What were the economic traditions which provided the background for the ideas of each. What are the facts and figures describing what actually was going on in the American economy during the early days of the Fed? The author provides no conceptual framework for the poor reader who has to plow through endless quotations unlinked to any rational argument. This book was totally disorganized.

Wueschner's study of the creation of Federal Reserve monetary policy early in the twentieth century is a carefully thought-out and written exegesis. It is placed in the essential economic context for general readers. Wueschner did not write exclusively for professional economists or professional historians. His work has been widely reviewed in the academic literature. The reviews, as might be expected for a controversial book on a controversial topic, have included both positive and negative comments with nearly every reviewer concluding that Wueschner's work is a contribution to the discipline of monetary history worthy of reading and evaluation by a wide audience. This work has been cited in recent studies that include articles published by the Federal Reserve System. Wueschner's book does not fit into the categories offered by the nameless reviewers who have offered evaluations for Amazon.com to date. It is not the book of the century. Nevertheless, it is not a weakly-written and poorly researched product. The book will stand on its merits and I think it will be part of the monetary history literature when most of what is being published today has been discarded.

The book may lack depth, but the categories that I read had insightful questions and included explanations of the questions' potency, applicable use, follow-up, and cautions. The questions are designed to head-off problems, solve problems, resolve conflict, make your opinion heard, etc. while helping others save face in a variety of situations.

I see a number of negative reviews. I beleive (and some actually say this) that these are because the book simply was not what they expected, and not that it doesn't have something to offer.

I found this book to be a very useful tool in identifying and solving problems. The first chapter on The Magic of Questions puts the rest of the book into perspective. I also like the way that the book is organized around specific types of problems to be solved. Chapters range all the way from dealing with unreasonable job demands to coworkers stealing credit for your work. I teach at a couple of universities and recommend this book to all of my students. Many have come back to thank me after successfully using this powerful technique.

I bought this and one other book written by Mr. Deep and Mr. Sussman. I was very disappointed to find that both books did not cover the topic in a way that relates to real situations that occur in the world of business. I wish I could state otherwise, however this book is not one that I can recommend to any reader interested in the topic of management.

I expected a book that provided a ready question to use in any situation - this is a book that provides you with a list of questions that you ask yourself when the world bites you.

I wanted a list of questions to bite other people as you always answer a tough question with another question. Perry Mason always had the right question to thump the witness that got out of line.

This is a self help book, not a guide to verbal and intellectual war with pompous managers and other fellow travelers. Give it a wide berth unless you are already sinking in your own failure.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading and applying the techniques in this well researched book. They can be broken down into three categories (1) New techniques: social networking, blogging, RSS, etc. (2) Popular techniques: search engine optimization, email marketing, viral marketing. (3) Outdated techniques: Usenet posting, autoresponder, etc. Overall, it's a solid book with up-to-date information. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars SEO Hype vs. Solid Web Marketing.......2005-07-05

It's interesting to note that SEO has become such a hype. There is no silver bullet to getting Web traffic as this book has pointed out. SEO techniques are essentially spamming on different levels. Google, Yahoo! and MSN change their algorithm routinely to combat spamming. So any technique that you use would give you high ranking for a while, then your site ranking would disappear. I like this book because it presents a wide and effective approach. Quality contents, for example, will give your site a high ranking on the long run. Two reasons: 1. search engines like them, and 2. people like them which prompt them to link and that helps raise ranking in search engines.

I recently purchased 3 books through Amazon for the purpose of improving my web site traffic. I purchased this one based on the reviews I read here. Boy! did I get taken.

This book has 10 chapters. Nine of them provide what I would call basic web site common sense and is oriented for an absolute beginner. The one chapter that has a bit of meat in it on how to modify your web pages to improve traffic just doesn't go into enough detail to be really worth while.

If you want a good book, with a lot of meat in it, get "Search Engine Optimization for Dummies." You get a great deal of information right from the first page and plenty of advice on how to help you.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Solid Advice.......2004-07-26

This book is best described as a do-it-yourself guide. Instead of paying someone else thousands of dollars, I'm able to get many more leads after applying just some of the techniques in the book. I find the book easy to understand and use. There is a tendency to think the techniques are too simple to be useful. The key, however, is to test them out. The ones that produce great results are usually the ones that appear to be simple.

101 Ways has helped me optimize my Web pages in a significant way. The advice on the use of Meta tags is a good example. I learn that most global search engines not longer use them. However, for international and intranet search engines, I will still need to set up web pages with meta tags. Solid advice like this is what motivates me to come back and write a good review for the book. So get it, use it, and profit by it!

1 out of 5 stars Less than inspiring content.......2005-01-20

If you have a solid insight into the Web, there's no need to purchase this book. Many of the examples are dated and overly simplistic for readers looking to walk away with greater insights about the Web.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Almost Obsolete.......2004-06-09

Most of the URLs and principles mentioned in the book went back to 2000, and they are no longer valid. I feel that an update is needed. It does have many great ideas, and the book is easy to read. Hope to see a new edition soon.

4 out of 5 stars A complete how-to book to determine the success of a Web sit.......2004-04-05

A complete how-to book to determine the success of a Web site. It clearly explains how to use metrics to quantify business goals. The tools, services, and techniques for measurement described in the book will be helpful for any e-business or other company with an Internet presence. A must-read

4 out of 5 stars A very good Web marketing book.......2002-03-28

This is one of the better books I've read on Web marketing. Some of Sterne's best advice comes in Chapter 1 when he writes, "Having a site that's cool and looks sharp is fine if that's all your target market is really after. The game, though, will go to those who come up with unique services. If you have to choose between fun, interesting, or useful, useful wins. Every time. Hands down."

Sterne starts the book talking about the basic questions in marketing: What are you trying to sell? Who are you trying to sell it to? And, what do they really want? He gives some good advice on working through the process of answering these questions and relates these issues well to Web related marketing. Chapter 3 is a great chapter on usability issues. It's refreshing to see a marketing guy like Sterne give so much attention to usability. There are ample references to Jakob Nielsen's research into usability issues, mixed with Sterne's own good thinking on the subject.

In the middle chapters of the book, Sterne talks about the different ways to effectively use the unique aspects of the Web --interactivity and personalization -- to market to your customers. I particularly liked his discussion of interactivity and flow in Chapter 4. He then goes on to discuss the use of the Web to do customer management and dedicates a whole chapter to partner relationship management. These are probably my least favorite sections of the book. He does give some good examples of companies effectively using the Web for this purpose, but I don't think the chapters on CRM and PRM where very thorough or insightful.

The last few chapters are dedicated to measuring the effectiveness of your Web marketing effort, managing your site, and what the future holds. In the chapter on measuring effectiveness, Sterne talks about the cost to reach and ultimately acquire a customer through your marketing efforts. The following information on Web log analysis was kind of thin, but Sterne does do a pretty good job discussing "The Softer Side of Assessment" like measuring customer satisfaction and reputation management. The chapter on managing your site was thin at best. For site management, I'd recommend Jessica Burdman's book, "Collaborative Web Development: Strategies and Best Practices for Web Teams."

Overall, I'd give Sterne an A on this book effort. The first half of the book is very, very good. The last few chapters felt somewhat rushed. Granted, Sterne picked some chapter topics that should be book topics, but even the summarized information didn't seem well put together. Maybe Jim was getting tired, or maybe I was getting tired. I finished reading this book on a red-eye flight home.

I would question the objectivity of the previous review.

Please also place no credence in my rating of five stars, I have yet to receive my copy.

5 out of 5 stars A clear and practical guide to an often-confusing industry........2001-06-19

The web advertising and marketing is extremely confusing. Almost everything I've ever been told has been a lie. In sharp contrast, Kuegler's book tells hard truths, backed up with very specific examples. He focuses on companies and techniques that have flown below the mainstream radar screen, and delivers information that any marketer or entrepreneur can use.

The book covers both theory and applications of locational analysis (LocAn). The reader will see the power of LocAn models in various real-world contexts varying from communication design, robotics, mail delivery, etc. As such it is a valuable source for practitioners, lecturers and students. The book is divided into two parts: The first part contains chapters in which an overview of some of the LocAn methodologies is given. The second part describes in more detail some selected applications. The book is well-suited as source for a graduate course, but also for students, lecturers and practitioners who want to learn about LocAn through self-study. It gives researchers a state of the art review of available location models.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Rich detail/excellent methodology.......2004-07-02

I'm an engineer, not a literature major, so I've learned to plow through dense text to find the important facts and features of subjects that are useful in my job. This book and the architecture methodology it describes is rich in detail and based on sound principles.

Every major best practice in architecture is included: structure, discreet layering, separation of concerns, technical accuracy, and business focus. The company I word for uses the 4+1 architecture methodology, which is not far off from the methodology given in this book. I've found a lot of ideas in this book that I can use on the job without violating our comoany standards, and I am sure that as time goes on I'll discover more because I refer to this book a lot.

If you want to complain about writing I recommend changing careers to something more suitable like writing novels. If you want to keep current in architecture and best practices read this book.

2 out of 5 stars An "invidious" book to read.......2004-06-22

This tome (scholarly book) may have a great purport (purpose), but the message is hidden in the sempiternity (endless amount)of $5 words. In fact, after reading this book, I feel like I've mastered a study in Roget.

It seems obvious to me the authors had their thesauraus wide open while writing this book, and only for the purpose of impressing us with their vast command of the English language. The author also continually speaks in parantheses (meaning, he slices a sentence in two, therefore distracting the reader from the original intent). Sarcasm intended.

In summary, find a book that is readable. This one isn't.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent secondary text on architecture.......2004-04-13

This book describes the Open Group's Architecture Framework, which is a structured approach to developing an architecture based on a sequence of steps outlined in their architecture development method.

The book sets the context for architecture in general in the first three chapters, covering an introduction to technical architectures in general, addressing specific issues related to architecture with respect to business alignment, technologies, cost factors, etc.; and delving into the business foundation that [should] drive the architecture.

Subsequent chapters cover each step in the architecture development method in detail. Specific steps are:
Phase A: Architecture Vision: Define scope; create vision; obtain approvals
Phase B: Business Architecture: Develop a Business Architecture
Phase C: Information System Architectures: Develop Data and Applications Architectures
Phase D: Technology Architecture: Develop a Technology Architecture
Phase E: Opportunities and Solutions: Checkpoint suitability for implementation
Phase F: Migration Planning: Prioritize work; Select major work packages; Develop migration plan Phase G: Implementation Governance: Provide architectural oversight of the implementation
Phase H: Architecture Change Management: Establish procedures for managing change to new architecture

Although this book covers an approach to architecture that is not mainstream, it is viable and well developed. I especially like the clearly articulated description and detail, which are reinforced with illustrations that bring the text to life. Moreover, the authors pay attention to all life cycle factors, particularly maintenance and post implementation support. Additional information about the Open Group Architecture Framework can be found on the sponsoring web site (ASIN B00006G0R7).

This book is, in my opinion, a secondary text on architectures and more suited to seasoned system and technical architects who are seeking to expand their knowledge of architecture methods. The approach set forth can be applied to the development and implementation of any architecture, making this book an asset to the discipline's body of knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for the Practicing Enterprise Architect.......2004-04-05

While this book is written around the TOGAF, its impact is wide ranging. I read this book together with HANDBOOK OF ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE by Bernus et. al. Both form great text books for Graduate Level courses aimed at practitioners rather than theoreticians. Go for it, its steep price is justified...

                                    5 out of 5 stars Golden book..........2003-07-08

This book is worth more than its weight in gold! More and more books I read for research, less and less new things I learn and this indeed is frustrating. This book is a rare exception to this experience. I generated much more awareness about what an electronic enterprise can be and learnt much more about strategy for going about it and implementing the architecture. For any one desiring to do so, studying this book is a must. The most important strength of this book is that it offers an ocean of knowledge in a nutshell. Excellent models are presented explaining difficult concepts. Best investment for the time and resources spent on it.

Large organizations no more need to become dinosaurs! This book teaches them how to become agile and dance to the tune of changing environmental factors and serve the mankind! Not only that. The large or aspiring organizations also can make impact on environment. Author's communication skill is so excellent that this book is good both for a novice or an expert in the field of management or in the information technology. No matter how much of expertise an expert may have on the subject, may still learn at least a few new pragmatic things about electronic enterprise!

Despite this book presenting so many ground breaking academic concepts it easily grabs the interest of reader right from the start and retains it till the end. What amazed me the most reading this book is that it discussed concepts in electronic enterprise not in isolation but in totality of the whole world scenario which is only the right thing to do in this global village business that the electronics has helped create!

A must read and study book for all FORTUNE 500 companies and those desiring to become one!

5 out of 5 stars Electronic Entreprise: the Power of Metaphors.......2003-07-08

The use of metaphors is definitely the most powerful tool to have people understand the intertwining between enterprise structuring and organization and the role of IT in enterprise's processes. Andrew Targowski's book provides with a lot of metaphoric explanations and examples, which are, moreover, consistent all along the book. It also provides with a comprehensive model and representation which highly clarifies the understanding of how IT is impacting the enterprise's strategy, organization and functioning. A very strong pedestal on which one can built advanced teaching, learning and implementing. The writing style of Andrew Targowski is very efficient, clear and pleasant. He provides us with a lot of drawings and diagrams, thus making it highly suitable and reusable in teaching and learning.
