Diversity and Change (Exploring Educational Issues ; 2)
Ben Cosin Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0415137209 |
Book Description
It is not only the UK education system which has recently undergone a process of change, although it has certainly been one of the most dramatically affected. Free market conceptions of played their part in these changes, particularly throughout the European Union. This collection therefore focuses on the economic and social contexts for education both in the UK and internationally, and how these have had an impact on the education systems of different countries. The authors write from a wide range of standpoints, some supportive and some critical of the new paradigms, but all focus on the traditions which have been subjected to ideological attacks, and in the processes and outcomes of those attacks.

Trust Within Global Virtual Teams: Antecedents, Facilitators, and Sustainability Factors
Olivier Chavaren Manufacturer: iUniverse ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 059527577X |
Book Description
“Within our globalized world, how to make men and women with very different cultures, customs, and time zones work together efficiently? This is a piercing question for the corporate world that Olivier Chavaren has perfectly identified. Admittedly, it is almost unrealistic and paradoxical to want to strengthen the bonds of mutual trust between people who globalization sends further away every day, one from another. But the solutions evoked here turn out to be very appealing. Even beyond tools, the professional and personal relationship may first of all depend upon the humanity of the individuals themselves.”—Etienne Leenhardt, Correspondent for FRANCE 2 (French TV) in Washington, DC"A meaningful theoretical framework coupled with a solid survey within global teams. An excellent book that every international manager should read."—Bruce McWhirter, Senior VP, Tax & Treasury, EQUANT (telecom networks, operating in 220 countries)

Hellenistic Egypt: Monarchy, Society, Economy, Culture (Hellenistic Culture and Society)
Jean Bingen Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0520251423 |
Book Description
Hellenistic Egypt brings together for the first time the writings of the preeminent historian, papyrologist, and epigraphist Jean Bingen. These essays, first published by Bingen from 1970 to1999, make a distinctive contribution to the historiography of Hellenistic Egypt, a period in ancient Egypt extending from its conquest by Alexander the Great in 332 B.C. until its annexation as a province of the Roman Empire by Octavian (later Augustus) in 30 B.C., after his defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Ruled by Ptolemaic kings during this period, Hellenistic Egypt was a sophisticated, rich, and fertile country. Its history is intimately bound up with the history of the Mediterranean as a whole, yet parts of that history remain relatively obscure and open to debate. New evidence, particularly from papyri, emerges frequently and shifts our understanding and interpretation of this significant time. For the last six decades Jean Bingen has been a leading editor and interpreter of such evidence. In particular his work on the Ptolemaic monarchy and economy, which illustrates how the Greeks and Egyptians interacted, has transformed the field and influenced all subsequent work. Historian and classicist Roger Bagnall has selected and introduced Bingen's most important essays on this topic.

Economy of the Sacred in Hellenistic and Roman Asia Minor (Oxford Classical Monographs)
Beate Dignas Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0199254087 |
Book Description
This original study challenges the idea that sanctuaries in Hellenistic and Roman Asia Minor were fully institutionalized within the poleis that hosted them. Examining the forms of interaction between rulers, cities, and sanctuaries, the book proposes a triangular relationship in which the rulers often acted as mediators between differing interests of city and cult. A close analysis of the epigraphical evidence illustrates that neither the Hellenistic kings nor the representatives of Roman rule appropriated the property of the gods but actively supported the functioning of the sanctuaries and their revenues. The powerful role of the sanctuaries was to a large extent based on economic features, which the sanctuaries possessed precisely because of their religious character. Nevertheless, a study of the finances of the cults reveals frequent problems concerning the upkeep of cults and a particular need to guard the privileges and property of the gods. Their situation oscillated between glut and dearth. When the harmonious identity between city and cult was disturbed, those closely attached to the cult acted on behalf of their domain.

Profit Beyond Measure: Extraordinary Results through Attention to Work and People
H. Thomas Johnson , and Anders Broms Manufacturer: Free Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 068483667X |
Book Description
Waste has plagued almost every industrial-age firm for the past century. In this powerfully argued alternative to conventional cost management thinking, experts H. Thomas Johnson and Anders Bröms assert that any company can avoid the waste that is generated through excessive operating costs in the short run and excessive losses from market instability in the long run. To gain more secure levels of profitability, management must simply change how it thinks about work and how it organizes work.Profit Beyond Measure details how two extremely profitable manufacturers, Toyota and the Swedish truck maker Scania, have rejected the traditional mechanistic mindset of managing by results that generates waste. Johnson and Broms explain how Toyota and Scania achieve their legendary cost advantage through a revolutionary concept they call managing by means (MBM). Instead of being driven to meet preconceived accounting targets, the production systems of Toyota and Scania are governed by the three precepts that guide all living systems: self-organization, interdependence, and diversity.
Amid a wealth of new insights into Toyota's vaunted system, Johnson and Bröms introduce the tools of MBM to show how design, production, and profitability analysis are done to customer order. They demonstrate that by following the principles that emulate life systems, even a lean and profitable company can organize work to greatly lessen its long-term earnings instability and sharply reduce its short-run operating costs.
Scania has achieved sixty-five years of financial stability and longevity in the face of fierce competition. Toyota has amassed a market value since 1988 that has rivaled -- or sometimes surpassed -- the American "Big Three" automakers combined. The principles that Johnson and Bröms set forth in Profit Beyond Measure can guarantee the same richer, longer life to any company that applies them.

Tom Johnson, financial heretic!.......2001-04-14
Tom Johnson's overview of business thinking is astoundingly clear, the beginning of the revolution that Dr. W. Edwards Deming demanded for so many years.
The Toyota story is told beautifully in chapter 3; now I begin to understand what happens in that Kentucky facility.
Chapter 4 is the weakness of the book; there is no there there. The Scania "secret" is not in the same universe as that at Toyota. What more evidence do we need than the sale of the company?
Chapter 5 is fascinating. Tom Johnson the heretic! A modern day Martin Luther! No one on Wall Street will want to know about orderline analysis. However, if those using it prosper...
The stock market vanish? That is precisely what will happen if Tom Johnson's thinking catches on. And that can't happen too soon. It may already be too late to preserve our culture as we know it. But then, it may be time.
Most in business will not want to hear the last two chapters. But no one wants to hear that they have cancer either, right? This patient (the world economy) has cancer, and no one knows if survival is possible.
I can't wait for the next iteration of this "stuff." The books that Johnson (and a few others, like Dr. Ed Baker) are going to write could make all the difference in our future. Dr. Norman Borlaug and his cohorts are trying to feed the world in spite of potentially deadly water shortages; Johnson and a few like-minded intellectuals are trying to feed the world correct thinking in spite of potentially deadly shortsightedness.
The Book the Business World Has Been Waiting for.......2001-01-19
20th Century Manufacturing Illuminated.......2000-11-15
This is the most important insight into the Toyota Production System which has come my way in the last ten years. Johnson demonstrates why the Toyota Management by Means approach gives superior long term value to customers, shareholders and employees.
Profit without Measure is essential reading for any manufacturer building a strategy for World Class Manufacturing.
At last, a vision of capitalism with heart.......2000-11-15
This book uses some concepts that moved me when I read Fritjof Capra's 'The Web of Life', and applies them to effectively and realistically running a business in a competitive environment.
In integrating living systems concepts with management control issues, this is the most philosophically thoughtful book I've seen written by someone who understands accounting.
