1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY.......2007-06-08

This book only pulls out the definitions from the text, no outline information as indicated is provided. May be if you buy the additional internet sample tests it could be more useful, but I was not about to waste more money with this book or company.

5 out of 5 stars The best on research methodology for business.......2003-08-03

One have to think on scientific research. There are lots of good books on research methodology for social sciences, engineering and other technology related sciences. But for business and management this one is the best I found. Comprehensive, logical and easy to follow. Very suitable for undergraduate students.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but way overpriced.......2002-08-09

This is a good book for the business student or consultant that has to frequently perform research and data analysis. Several methods and concepts are outlined. The topic of "research methods and data analysis" is not the most exciting; so don't have your expectations high that it's going to be interesting reading. On the other hand, if your objective is to learn how to apply certain techniques in data analysis, research, or conducting surveys, you'll find this book helpful....
I had bought this book...(used, but in excellent condition) so it was a great buy...

3 out of 5 stars Long tarded explanation, but lots of examples.......2001-04-11

Now, I bought this book for my degree requirement. The explanation might be long winded at some time, but the examples given are really good. It make me able to comprehend it easily. The graphics in this book is not too good as the publisher tends to use only one colour which can make reading become boring. This book can be used as a good reference as it explains steps about conducting research and how to present written report. This book can be more interesting if simple, direct explanation is used.

5 out of 5 stars Good elementary overview of research methodology.......2000-10-25

This book is not as advanced as the PhD level, but it is a good supplement to PhD material. If you've ever been there, you know Cook and Campbell can be hard to understand, and Sekaran explains most concepts at a very easy level.

    Book Description

Today we are in the information age. Many of the principles of the art of war that were born of agrarian times and honed during the industrial age are hopelessly outdated. It is already past time for radical change.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The author rates 5 stars as an antagonist, the book 3 stars........2001-02-12

"The Principles of War For the Information Age" is an ambitious book seeking to not only redefine but replace the traditional MOOSEMUSS (maneuver, objective, offensive, surprise, economy of force, mass, unity of command, simplicity, and security) principles of war. The book consists mainly of the author's thoughts with only a few weak historical examples given as evidence. The book does not provide a compelling case for change, but serves well as a thought-provoking essay. One finds enough material to keep the readers' interest to complete the book with an occasional nugget of gold. One has to admire the author's courage in writing the book as an active duty officer. The Army should assign the author to a prestigious military research center or college.

    4 out of 5 stars Unique perspective.......2001-01-20

What really impresed me about this book was Leonhard's application of physics terms to modern warfare. Using quantities like "velocity", "momentum" and "mass", he distills modern warfare to its most basic components, and by so doing, offers the foundation for the proper application of maneuver doctrine in 21st century arms.

While perhaps not as engaging as "The Art of Maneuver", "The Principles of War for the Information Age" is another significant contribution to military theory by an outstanding author.

    2 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment.......2000-12-20

There are some tidbits of wisdom in the soup offered up by Leonhard. Following his excellent The Art of Maneuver, and Fighting by Minutes, Principles begins as a much needed critique of the classical principles of war. He shows with great gusto that many are mutually contradicting, like mass, security, and maneuver. You can't hide a large force, or make it move very quickly. Nor can you hide a moving force.

I suppose Leonhard hoped that his new principles of war would take off, and generate whole new doctrines and policy for the "information age." His Three Laws of War are an excellent step forward in anthropology and psychology, but whether they will be much use on the battlefield or policy centers is unclear.

Rather than scrap aging principles for a new way of thinking, as I had hoped, Leonhard appends several new "principles" to his three laws. Having read his other books with much enjoyment, I was shocked to see him actually state that the quintissential fog of war would be lifted in the information age, especially after the derision he heaped on just that idea in The Art of Maneuver.

Frankly, I would recommend this book to anyone who blindly subscribes to the touted "Principles of War," if only to see more innovative thinking. The latter part of the book, on the "new" principles of war remain to be demonstrated in reality.

    5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking discussion of modern warfare principles........2000-09-05

What are the new ethical and military principles for fighting a war using today's modern machinery and equipment? Principles of War for the Information Age provides a thought-provoking discussion of modern warfare and the new principles of such battle, discussing implications of precision warfare, objectives in war, and civilian and military concerns alike.

5 out of 5 stars Army New thinking is better than old false thinking.......2000-08-07

LTC Leonhard is a brilliant tactician who examines the past, the present and the future simultaneously--a coup d-oeil---creating an understanding of everything far better than cowardly copying the Germans or someone else. He takes what he knows to be true as a current U.S. Army battlefield Commander and applies this experience to fresh thinking far better than any arm-chair wannabe who praises another service that has not done its homework and thought very deep about the issues, but is deep in platitudes. The 9 Principles of war (MOOSE MUSS) as we remember them are actually derived from Clausewitz if another reviewer had his wits about him. They are a guide to thinking no more divinely inspired as the writings of Big Al or the wannabe tacticians of America's sea-based posturers.

LTC Leonhard is one of America's and the Army's best and brightest thinker-warriors who refuses to succomb to the platitudes of the past or the present Germanophiles, who omit in their discussions that maneuverism died in the fortress cities of Tobruk, Stalingrad, Bastogne when it met the defense-in-depth fueled by a nation at total war. We need new thinking not new wine in old wine bottles!

    Book Description

This text provides a modern comprehensive survey of the principles and applications of forecasting methods in the world of commerce, public and private. The text includes all necessary theory for a rigorous statistics approach, but all basic content is presented in an intuitive style supported with applications drawn from a wide variety of real sources. The text is appropriate for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in Business, Economics, or Engineering, as well as `time series' or regression/forecasting in statistics departments where an applications-oriented approach is desired. Coverage ranges from a review of basic statistics, to thorough discussions of basic methods such as smoothing, trend, and regression, up to advanced techniques such as ARIMA, MARIMA, Neural Networks, Econometrics, and Intervention Analysis. Modern Data Analytic techniques are included. Over 300 time series data sets are included on disk and `continuing' minicases help student understanding, short `interest' boxes are included for motivation, and each chapter includes a thorough collection of problems for assignment.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and text.......2000-10-04

I have a recent PhD in mathematics and some knowledge of basic statistics, but I had never learned any forecasting techniques.

I needed a good reference tool and a textbook for selfstudy. Mr Delurgio's book fits both. I have used many textbooks over my extended student life and this textbook fits all the requirements to be a well-used and often-consulted volume.

It is clearly written. There are many exercises for a simple spreadsheet program -- even if you have lost the enclosed data diskette, all the information is available for downloading from Mr Delurgio's website (accessible from the publisher's website). The index is clearly organised and exhaustive, and each chapter has a quick reference page of formulae and concepts -- perfect for review or for reference.

I strongly recommend this book for working on your own, and if you have to take a class in forecasting, you won't be disappointed if this is the text your instructor has chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on business forecasting.......1997-12-22

I had the oportunity to use this book as part of a graduate level business forecasting class. I found it to be very good with emphasis on the applications and understanding of forecasting. It does include mathematical theory, but only as it is necessary to explain the topic. I highly recommend it for people with an interest in learning forecasting and quantitative methods. I have read several books on statistics and quantitiative methods, and this books does excel.

              Book Description

The problems they face are more complex than ever. The pressure to deliver the right solutions more intense. So how do teams in today's rapid-fire business environment keep up?
According to John Redding, today's teams need a new approach to achieving their goals-a radical approach. And he should know. Redding, after all, headed a five-year research project, the result of which was the radical teamwork method, a method proven to be eminently more effective than any traditional approach to teamwork. Among other innovations, the radical team method is designed to generate creative thinking, encourage risk-taking, and greatly bolster team learning to produce exceptional results. In this book, Redding translates the findings of his project into a hands-on guide you can use to create radical teams for your organization and put them to work.
You'll learn how to identify the projects in your own organization that require the radical team approach. You'll use checklists, exercises, and worksheets to master a series of action steps for applying this approach to some of today's toughest business issues. And you'll get the tools you need to implement radical teamwork throughout your organization, from selecting and training team members, to leading and coaching radical teams, and assessing their effectiveness.
Throughout the book, case studies drawn from radical team experiences in a variety of organizations bring home the practical aspects of the approach-an approach that promises to become the standard by which all organizations will tackle their most important strategic challenges.

                  Book Description

In this unique anthology, Steckel and Floud coordinate ten essays that bring a new perspective to inquiry about standard of living in modern times. These papers are arranged for international comparison, and they individually examine evidence of health and welfare during and after industrialization in eight countries: the United States, Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia.
The essays incorporate several indicators of quality of life, especially real per capita income and health, but also real wages, education, and inequality. And while the authors use traditional measures of health such as life expectancy and mortality rates, this volume stands alone in its extensive use of new "anthropometric" data—information about height, weight and body mass index that indicates changes in nations' well-being. Consequently, Health and Welfare during Industrialization signals a new direction in economic history, a broader and more thorough understanding of what constitutes standard of living.

                          Book Description

In recent years job training programs have suffered severe funding cuts and the focus of training programs has shifted to meet the directives of funders rather than the needs of the community. How do these changes to job training affect disadvantaged workers and the unemployed?

In an insightful and comprehensive discussion of job education in Canada, Cohen and her contributors pool findings from a five-year collaborative study of training programs. Good training programs, they argue, are essential in providing people who are chronically disadvantaged in the workplace with tools to acquire more secure, better-paying jobs. In the ongoing shift toward a neo-liberal economic model, government policies have engendered a growing reliance on private and market-based training schemes. These new training policies have undermined equity.

In an attempt to redress social inequities in the workplace, the authors examine various kinds of training programs and recommend specific policy initiatives to improve access to these programs. This book will be of interest to policymakers, academics, and students interested in policy, work, equity, gender and education.

                              Book Description

Introduction to Management Science, 2e offers a unique case study approach and integrates the use of Excel. Each chapter includes a case study that is meant to show the students a real and interesting application of the topics addressed in that chapter. This most recent revision has been thoroughly updated to be more “user-friendly” and more technologically advanced. These changes include, a completely new chapter on the art of modeling with spreadsheets. This unique chapter goes far beyond anything found in other textbooks and are based on the award winning methodologies used by Mark Hillier in his own course. The technology package has also been greatly enhanced to include, Crystal Ball 2000 (Professional Edition) a Management Science Online Learning Center, and an Excel add-in called Alver Table for performing sensitivity analysis. Crystal Ball is the most popular Excel add-in for computer simulation and includes OptQuest (an optimizer with simulation) as well as a forecasting module. The Management Science Online Learning Center (website) includes several modules that enable students to interactively explore certain management science techniques in depth. Solver Table is an Excel add-in developed by the author to help perform sensitivity analysis systematically, as well as substantially expanded coverage of computer simulation, including Crystal Ball. We now have two chapters on computer simulation instead of one, where the second chapter features the use of Crystal Ball.all.

5 out of 5 stars Great book and professor, maybe don't try this at home alone!.......2006-04-28

Echoing another reviewer this is a great book and M Hill is a great teacher. Couple of minor glitches however - some of the software should be obtained from the web not the CD as there were production problems with (some of?) the CDs - this is not a problem as most of the software has free albeit limited educational software licenses. I would be cautious about trying this stuff at home alone as a beginner however - some minor errors in spreadsheet construction can lead you badly astray. Human instructors are still value added and here especially so! However I cannot imagine a better book to use under any circumstance for someone wanting to learn about this material. Optimization is the closest thing you will ever find to getting a free lunch and this is a first class introduction

5 out of 5 stars Great Professor... Great Book!.......2005-12-20

I was a student of Professor Mark Hillier and truly enjoyed both his class and his textbook. His ability to break concepts down to their simplist form is an excellent teaching tool. I recommend this textbook for all MBAs and anyone interested in optimizing a process in their life. Linear Programming is easy with this book. [...]

4 out of 5 stars One of the easiest books to understand!.......2005-10-08

This book is overall very good for graduate studies. Its language is simple and explains the concepts very well.
I personally found some minor issues like:
                              1) Example given are too much lengthy and it takes time to come to a point.
                              2) Sometimes you cannot understand the questions being asked.

Overall, I recommend this book to everyone.

                              2 out of 5 stars Non-user friendiness.......2004-05-18

Factors that contributed to a low rating for this book include, a lack of user-friendliness and lengthy case studies. The blue colored wordings (black would be better) can be quite glaring under the lights making it not smoothing to the eyes.

Furthermore, it uses long case studies which could have been shortened by cutting down on the introductions to the companies it made reference to. More focus should be given to concepts at the earlier stage of every section, instead of making the reader running through a lengthy introduction before focusing on the concepts.

Important concepts could also have been left out. One example would be the omission of 'Reduced Cost' under the chapters of Linear Programming and Integer Programming.

However, this book is certainly catered to users of MS Excel. It has in-depth discussions of Excel in areas of Management Science
