          Book Description

Rarely, if ever, do companies clearly distinguish between or balance the management of today's business and planning for the future. Derek Abell, internationally renowned for his pioneering work on strategic market planning, once again breaks sharply with conventional wisdom to demonstrate how a company can develop analytic marketing modes for not one but two distinct planning horizons. Managing with dual strategies, Abell argues, calls for new approaches not only to planning, but to organizational structure and management control. He makes specific recommendations on how current operating practices need to be adapted, and shows how leading firms are recognizing the dual nature of management as a new way of organizational life.

Planning for the present, Abell shows, requires a vision of how the firm must operate now given its unique competencies and resources. By involving each level within the management team from the CEO to financial planners, to line managers, Abell details how firms can pinpoint market opportunities through careful segmentation and identification of key success factors to "connect" with customers. At the same time, he distinguishes the importance of horizontal relationships for defining and focusing on internal strategies, and vertical relationships for being attuned to changing market realities.

Success today, he warns, does not ensure success tomorrow. Abell describes how world-class leaders such as Nestlé, Caterpillar, and Heineken monitor both internal and external forces for market change, successfully mastering the present, and preempting the future. Preparing for the future requires understanding the full range of activities industry-wide, and anticipating changes in technology, buyer/seller behavior, and product life cycles. Abell explains how companies can develop and implement these co-existing visions and address the real forms of change that vitally affect their future -- today and tomorrow.

5 out of 5 stars Dual planning: Strategy-for-Today and Strategy-for-Tomorrow.......2004-11-27

Derek Abell is an internationally recognized professor at the Swiss IMD business school. He has shown THOUGHT LEADERSHIP on strategy in books like Defining the Business (1980) and Strategic Market Planning (1979).

This book summarizes Abell's complete experience on strategic planning. And I promise you; he has a lot to offer!

This fall of 2004, a leading Danish business school still used this book as curricula for their MBA-level course on business development. I have many newer strategy books on my bookshelf, but I agree fully with their choice.

Abell's core idea is that TO SUSTAIN EXCELLENCE, COMPANIES NEED DUAL STRATEGIES - ONE FOR THE PRESENT AND ONE FOR THE FUTURE.

The distinction between a PRESENT ("today for today") and FUTURE ("today for tomorrow") orientation is not the usual short-term, long-term distinction - in which the short-term plan is simply a detailed operations and budgeting exercise made in the context of a hoped-for long-term market position. Present planning also requires strategy - a vision of how the firm has to operate now (given its competencies and target markets) and what the role of each key function will be. The long-term plan, by contrast, is built on a vision of the future - even more important, on a strategy for getting there.

Planning for today requires a clear, precise definition of the business - a delineation of target customer segments, customer functions, and the business approach to be taken; planning for tomorrow is concerned with how the business should be redefined for the future.

Planning for today focuses on shaping up the business to meet the needs of today's customers with excellence. It involves identifying factors that are critical to success and smothering them with attention; planning for tomorrow can entail reshaping the business to compete more effectively in the future.

Planning for today seeks to achieve compliance in the firm's functional activities with whatever definition of the business has been chosen; planning for tomorrow often involves bold moves away from existing ways of conducting the business.

Planning for today requires an organization that mirrors current business opportunities; planning for tomorrow may require reorganization for future challenges.

IN SHORT, PLANNING FOR TODAY IS ABOUT MANAGING CURRENT ACTIVITIES WITH EXCELLENCE; PLANNING FOR TOMORROW IS ABOUT MANAGING CHANGE.

I've read this book three times since it was published (okay, I may be somewhat slow). And each time, I add to my knowledge on working with strategy. Having worked very much with strategic management in practice over the last 15 years, I find it amazing that I cannot make more people read this book. But I won't give up. If you don't have time to read the full book, then consider reading Abell's article on the same subject in Sloan Management Review, spring 1999. However, the article doesn't include much on Abell's heavy toolbox presented in the book.

                  Book Description

This multi-volume series of modern Japanese economic history encompasses both the institutional aspects of Japanese economic development, and the results of econometric and cliometric research to place the key moments of Japanese economic history in a more general context. Volume one, The Emergence of Economic Society in Japan, focuses on the period from the start of the seventeenth century, when a discernible consumer population begins to form within cities, to the 1870s when the start of rapid industrialization is witnessed. This industrialization was unique amongst non-Western countries, facilitated by the emergence of their market economy. The contributors examine the reasons for these developments, tracing the emergence of a national economy in which agricultural produce begins to be produced specifically for the purpose of sale to the newly-forming urban consumer populations, and considerations of efficiency and competition are introduced into agriculture. Seventeenth century Japan is shown to be a society that was almost immediately able to provide key components of a market economy, such as communications, transport, and currency, so that economic laws began to operate spontaneously. Following its encounters with industrialized Western powers, Japan was quick to embrace their example, and uniquely was able to rapidly industrialize. Focusing on the foundations of modernity laid in this period, the volume explores whether this was a process of 'alternative modernization' to that experienced in the West. Written by leading Japanese scholars, and available for the first time in English-translation, the contributions have been abridged and re-written for a non-Japanese readership.

I am interested in starting a direct marketing business and thought the title of this book was just what I needed. Besides, it is written by a full collection of professionals. But once you start reading it, you realize these guys missed the internet boat. There are a few interisting points, here and there, but you could get them in almost any direct marketing book.

                      Book Description

Today's managers encounter tremendous resistance in getting others to buy-in to change. The ongoing rounds of downsizing and upheaval have taken their toll, leaving a legacy of skepticism. Therefore, managers must not only have ideas, but must be experts at "selling" the correct answers, information, and measurements to address issues of change. Securing the Future uses the Theory of Constraints, a breakthrough improvement methodology, to provide solutions to today's management problems. It documents the step-by-step approach to achieving a strategic vision of long-term competitive advantage, employment security, and customer satisfaction. Using a combination of parable, methodology, and case studies, this book presents an in-depth management road map to exponential improvement in any organization. If you are looking for concrete ideas on how to build the intellectual capital your organization will need in order to thrive in years to come, Securing the Future will show you the way.

                      5 out of 5 stars Practical Knowledge.......2000-06-01

This book provides practical tools to increase profits for your organization. Gerald Kendall shares the criterion to prioritize/choose themes for improving customer satisfaction. He suggests that one should focus on those issues for improvement so that the customer is either willing to pay a higher price or ready to give you additional volume, or this would prevent the customer from switching over to a competitor. Improving those customer dissatisfactions, that would not result in one of the above, would not benefit your organization at all. I find many such tips through out this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to eliminating market constraints.......1999-08-27

I am a Jonah's Jonah focused on eliminating market (external) constraints in a variety of industries. I found this book while taking the External Constraint Course at the Goldratt Institute. While the Eli Goldratt book "Its Not Luck" was inspirational and the Institute class was excellent, "Securing the Future" is what I refer to day by day.

                                Book Description

Researchers and professionals in all walks of life need to use the many tools offered by the statistical world, but often do not have the necessary experience in both concept and application. No matter what your profession, sooner or later numbers need to be crunched, and often you need to understand how to do it, and why it is important. Quality control is no different. Six Sigma and Beyond: Statistics and Probability covers the concepts of some useful statistical tools, appropriate formulae for specific tools, the connection of statistics to probability, and how to use them. This volume introduces the relationship of statistics, probability, and reliability as they apply to quality in general and to Six Sigma in particular. The author brings the theoretical into the practical by providing statistical techniques, tests, and methods that the reader can use in any organization. He reviews basic parametric and non-parametric statistics, probability concepts and applications, and addresses topics for both measurable and attribute characteristics. He delineates the importance of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data not from an academic point of view but from a practical perspective. This is not a textbook but a guide for anyone interested in statistical, probability, and reliability to improve processes and profitability in their organizations. When you begin a study of something, you want to do it well. You want to design a good study, analyze the results properly, and prepare a cogent report that summarizes what you've found. Six Sigma and Beyond: Statistics and Probability shows you how to use statistical tools to improve your processes and give your organization the competitive edge.

This book is the first of its kind to offer readers a comprehensive view of the complex array of executive, operational, financial, human resource, technological and other management issues that collectively impact organizational performance. Utilizing real-world accounts, each section examines one of the major strategic management mistakes that companies have made when trying to resolve problems with their performance.

You will gain valuable insight into the underlying issues in each case, including:

An understanding of the detrimental effect that departmentalized business structures and functions have had on organizational decision-making.

An appreciation of the strategic importance of the Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology functions.

Greater awareness of the competitive edge that your organization's stakeholders (customers, employees, suppliers and investors) can offer.

Above all, you will come away with a renewed sense of urgency. It will compel you to move beyond the outdated ideas and institutions that your department, company, or industry has inherited. It will provide you with the tools and know-how that you need to begin construction on a more promising (and profitable) future of your own making.

                                      Book Description

Why the Bubble Burst provides a comprehensive look at the most dramatic run-up in equity values in US history. Lawrance Evans takes the reader from theory to empirics, illustrating why we need to go beyond the efficient markets hypothesis and the theory of domestic irrational exuberance to fully unpack the unprecedented phenomenon, why the market was destined for a major decline and why the fallout will be severe and protracted.

Quantitative evidence suggests that mutual funds, international portfolio flows, and the decline in the amount of corporate equity outstanding all played an integral role in the stock market boom. These ingredients in the context of a supply and demand-based theory of equity price determination indicate that supply and demand forces unrelated to corporate profitability elevated US equity valuations to unsustainable levels.

The author's conclusions carry implications for economic theory and policy, retirement security and stock market investments in general. Economists, finance professionals and policymakers will find this volume a unique investigation into the stock market boom and bust.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book For Trainers.......2005-10-04

This book is wonderful, especially if you plan to get your CTT+ certification. I am reading it now for the second time. Too many other books on this subject cite rules and techniques without explanation. This book gives you the rules AND clear, actionable methods to follow them to achieve results in the classroom.

4 out of 5 stars Good Prep for CTT exam, but you still need much more.......2002-10-09

This is a very useful book to help prepare for the CTT exam; and considering the fact that it isn't that expensive - I recommend it. However, be aware that it is only a helpful tool and not anywhere close to a complete or comprehensive study guide - although, as far as I know, this is the best thing available. That is because there is almost nothing else available. You can go out to the Comptia site and through them get official materials - however, these materials are EXTREMELY VAGUE & EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE. In my mind, they really aren't worth getting; and I've had both the Competencies Booklet and their nearly useless Videotape.
This book weighs in at close to 400 pages, but it is a really quick read - even for a slow-poke reader like me. And the 2 authors break the book down to analyze the competencies in real human terms, as opposed to the vague generalities that fill the official booklet. They also provide lots of very helpful & useful observations that will help you as an instructor - even if they don't relate directly to the exam.
There are 2 shortfalls with this book however.
ONE, they have quite a number of practice questions in the book. But these will not prepare you in the least, for the real CTT written exam. Their questions are quite good; but way too straight-forward. The CTT exam is the most insane, subjective exam I've ever seen; and as a bootcamp instructor for nearly 3 years; I've taken close to 100 certification exams from about 8 different vendors. Their questions are a good start, but you need to go out to google and search on "CTT practice". I found 2 practice exams when I took this... Both of these practice question sets were wild & flakey; but they got me in the right frame of mind for the insanity that is the: "CTT written exam" - it was much crazier. And without seeing those practice questions, I would not have even scored 25%, let alone pass. There is a certain type of wrong /insane answer that you need to learn how to recognize in order to pass that test.
THE SECOND SHORTFALL WITH THIS BOOK IS THAT IT SAYS NOTHING TO HELP YOU WITH THE VIDEOTAPE YOU MUST SUBMIT AS THE 2ND STEP TOWARDS THE CTT Certification. It does reprint the CTT handbook that was current when the book was published, and that does contain references to the videotape you must prepare - but it is again, extremely vague. The official videotape that you can get through COMPtia, is likewise, extremely vague, and in my opinion
                                      nearly worthless.

4 out of 5 stars Effective Preparation for Certified Technical Trainer Exam.......2001-08-09

Major computer hardware and software vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle, Sun, Cisco Systems, Adobe, Novell, and others demand competency in their instructors. Acceptable proof of competency is a Certified Technical Trainer (CTT) certification.

It's a multiple choice test, and as a holder of 2 Engineering degrees from the University of Illinois, extensive experience in Project Management, and being a Certified Toastmaster, I thought "How hard could this be?"

Frankly, its the toughest test I ever took. Whoever wrote it, was diabolical. And, I had prepared and prepared well. An essential --but not the only-- preparation was thoroughly reading this book and working ALL of the exercises twice.

The book is well organized, well written, includes good exercises, and clear instructions on how to apply for and take both the computer portion of the test, and the video tape submission. However, do not expect to pass the test after reading this book alone. Seek out practice exams, talk to others who have taken the test, and of course, actual class room experience should be part of your preparation.

I would have appreciated citations to additional preparation resources such as practice tests, and websites.

Don't be taken in by the "LDAP" on the cover. The sections on the use of directories for maintaining QoS policy appear to have been cobbled from other sources, are spotty in the coverage and at least a year or so old. This book will provide a basic introduction to several of the different ways of managing bandwidth, but certainly won't help with deployment of directory-enabled network policy management or services.
