1 out of 5 stars The Marxist speaks out ?.......2005-12-20

In his last book, Andrew (Andy) Hargreaves takes us through the dark alley of modern education. At the end of the alley, shines his promised land of Marxism. Hargreaves political views are cleverly disguised, but still obvious. He never speaks of a Marxist society, but instead uses jargons such as "beyond the knowledge society", "social mission" and "cosmopolitan identity".

The kowledge society and related terms, such as knowledge worker and knowledge economy, were created by Peter F. Drucker and appeared in his 1969 book "The Age of Discontinuity". In his 1999 book "Management Challenges for the 21st Century", Drucker has following to say:

"Knowledge workers are rapidly becoming the largest single group in workforce of every developed country. They may already comprise two-fifths of the U.S. workforce - and a still smaller but rapidly growing proportion of the workforce of all other developed countries. It is on their productivity, above all, that the future prosperity and indeed the future survival of the developed economies will increasingly depend." (page.141).

Drucker is absolutely right, that the knowledge society aready exists, but Hargreaves eyes are focused on the society beyond, which in his opinion clearly belongs to the Marxist ideology. Following quotations make this abuntantly clear:

"Teaching beyond the knowledge society means developing a cosmopolitan identity that can build chains of caring for those who are out of sight but should never be out of mind." (page.48).

"Teaching exclusively beyond the knowledge society cultivates caring, develops character and builds cosmopolitan identity." (page.52).

"We have seen that standardized educational reform has made it almost impossible for many teachers to teach either for the knowledge society or beyond it as part of a broader social mission." (page.162).

What is the social mission of the teaching profession ? Hargreaves emphasizes this aspect of teaching:

"Teachers and others must now dedicate themselves to bringing together these two missions of teaching for the knowledge society and beyond it - making it the pinnacle of their professional purpose." (page.52).

"The standardized reforms of Ontario education offer only disincentives and discouragement to those who see their work as being about teaching beyond the knowledge economy and about creating values for good. They are squeezing the social mission out of teaching." (page.96).

As previously noted, one of the expressions that Hargreaves uses instead of Marxism is "cosmopolitan identity". In true Marxistic fashion, he keeps on striking the hot iron:

"This is what teaching beyond the knowledge society must address: developing cosmopolitan identity and humanitarian responsibility at home as well as abroad." (page.35).

"Teachers and others, therefore, must think not only of how to teach for the knowledge society, but also of how to teach beyond it, so we address other compelling human values and educational purposes in addition to those that make a profit - purposes concerned with character, community, democracy and cosmopolitan identity." (page.43).

It is disturbing, that Hargreaves goes so far out on the Marxist limb, that his book is more of a political declaration, than an analysis of education. I believe that John Locke (1632-1704), Auguste Comte (1798-1857) and John Dewey (1859-1952) would have agreed with me.

5 out of 5 stars The best Andy Hargreaves yet!.......2003-06-08

Andy Hargreaves's new book is a best seller.

I am always impressed by that uncommon trait of commonsense in Hargreaves's writing. In the 1990s writing on learning organisations was very topical. However at the turn of the century learning communities and learning societies took precedence.

Pearls of wisdom abound throughout the book:
In the Introduction Hargreaves draws the links between living in a knowledge economy and a knowledge society.
The knowledge economy primarily serves the private good. The knowledge society also encompasses the public good. Our school have to prepare young people for both of them (Hargreaves, 2003, p.1)
Hargreaves also points out that the term "knowledge society" is a misnomer and argues that a more appropriate term is learning society (Hargreaves, 2003, p.3).

Hargreaves describes teaching as a paradoxical profession where teachers are expected to help create a knowledge society and at the same time right the wrongs that pervade modern western communities. In a very quotable section Hargreaves discusses the different approaches of his dentist and teachers towards professional development.

In dealing with insecurity and Hargreaves notes that loyalty between the worker and the company has been replaced with contracts.

Hargreaves's warning that curriculum standards compromise teachers' options:
The micromanagement of standards-based reform has deleterious effects on teachers' teaching, on teachers' students and on teachers' relationship to their work and with one another (Hargreaves, 2003, p.90).

This is a great book. It is well written and eloquent. Leaders should be readers, and Andy Hargreaves's new book makes professional reading engaging and interesting. Well done Andy Hargreaves.

Teachers College Press is to be congratulated on adding Andy Hargreaves to their list of authors. This book will help put TCP back into a field of educational excellence alongside Jossey-Bass and Corwin Press.

          Book Description

This law book is a more comprehensive, practical approach to the subject of mergers and acquisitions than the highly theoretical or confined approaches taken in previous works. Principally designed for law school students, Business Planning for Mergers and Acquisitions presents a thorough treatment of the merger and acquisition process from the perspective of a practicing attorney. It will also be helpful to attorneys and investment bankers practicing in the merger and acqusition area, as well in business school courses dealing with mergers and acquisitions.

The text considers numerous topics arising in the business of mergers and acquisitions, including corporate, securities, antitrust, pre-merger notification, federal income taxatation, accounting, and valuation. Thompson integrates the consideration of these topics while focusing on various types of merger and acquisition transactions.

A significant number of problems are used to illustrate the many varied and interrelated principles, and each chapter begins with a problem designed to present a real life setting for an examination of the topics covered in that chapter. The approach is intended to help the law student or other reader gain both a practical and theoretical understanding of many of the legal problems a business attorney will likely encounter in practice. The deals presented offer some of the most challenging and intellectually reewarding work for attorneys.

To better illustrate many of the transactional principles, reference is made throughout the book to the 1989 acqusition by Time, Inc. of Warner Communications, Inc. Business Planning for Mergers and Acqusitions offers a thorough and engaging course for law students who may plan to practice in business law.

                Book Description

Although business history has been recognized as an academic subject since the 1970s, the insights of scholarly business historians in the UK have not been widely accessible to students. This book is designed to fill that gap by serving as a suitable textbook on which a one- or two- semester
course might be based. The text draws on recent research and key debates to clearly outline the major aspects of business behavior in 20th-century Britain. Moreover, it presumes little prior knowledge of history, business, or economics on the student's part. Each chapter is clearly structured,
containing objectives, contents, learning points, discussion questions, and tips for further reading. The book is highly accessible, and the use of tables, "key idea" boxes, charts, and maps results in a lively presentation of data.

                    Book Description

Since its first performance on Christmas Eve, 1951, Amahl and the Night Visitors has taken its place with A Christmas Carol as a holiday classic. Peformed on every continent and in many languages, it has been seen by more people than any other opera in history.

The story tells of the night the Three Kings, following the star to Bethlehem, stop for shelter at the home of Amahl, a poor, crippled shepard boy who lives with his widowed mother. Inspired by the Wise Men's tale of a kingdom "built on love alone," Amahl offers his own simple gift to the Christ Child. And then a miracle happens. . .

In this warm and compassionate story, Gian Carlo Menotti has captured the essential spirit of Christmas. At its premiere, The New York Times called Amahl "rare art. . . tender and exquisite." Now brought to life in glowing watercolors, Amahl and the Night Visitors is a feast for the eyes and heart, one readers of all ages will want to return to again and again.

This gorgeously illustrated storybook has become the favorite part of my Christmas, since I found it 8 years ago. As an elementary music teacher I found this to be a fabulous way to introduce opera to my 4th grade classes. Each year I read the story to them inserting selected vocal works from the opera. This allows the children to hear the words spoken first, preparing them for the selections from the opera.
I would encourage anyone who wishes to teach their children about opera to purchase this book along with a quality audio recording. Enjoy!

Of course, performance rights and other instrumental orchestrations must be obtained through the publisher, but the info. that you need to do that is included in this book. If you're looking to get started into "Amahl", this and the video are the way to do it!

5 out of 5 stars Lame boy meets Wise Men.......1998-09-21

This lovely Christmas book is based on Menotti's own cure of lameness as a child in 1911 Italy. In this book, Amahl, the lame boy, meets up with the Wise Men on the way to Bethlehem. His poor mother and he give the Wise Men a place to bed down for the night and Amahl is repaid for his faith by being cured and going with the Wise Men to meet the Christ Child. This delightful Christmas story is full of mystery and awe, reinforced well by the full color illustrations. This book belongs on every child's bookshelf and makes an excellent Christmas gift for six to eleven year olds. I am a church librarian and bought this book for our church library.

                    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful holiday treat.......2001-07-19

When my sisters and I were small children, my mother began to read us this story just before Christmas. We heard it read aloud each year as we grew up, and it became an important and special part of our holiday celebration. Now as a middle school teacher, I read this book to my students each December. It's a charming (and true!) tale of a loving family who experience a very special holiday. Simple but sincere, heartwarming and gentle, Lion in the Box is a book to treasure. Sharing this story each year is a wonderful tradition to start in your own family.

                    5 out of 5 stars A "Living" Book.......2000-09-07

This book is about a poor family in New York. It is what Charlotte Mason referred to as a "living" book. When I read this book to my children, they were 6 and 7 years of age. They were spellbound and I wound up reading it in one sitting because they "begged" me to keep going! There is also a neat craft idea for making a Christmas star.

This book charmingly deals with a child's fear of being away from home when the Easter Bunny is due to visit. How will the Easter Bunny know where to find him? It's a dilemma handled with grace and style by author Kay Winters. This is a reassuring, satisfying read for young kids and their parents.

This book is a must read for anyone familiar with Lebanese/Syrian immigrants to the US in the last 100 years.

The characters and customs in the book are so much like the people and things I remember as a child.

If you are of Lebanese/Syrian descent, you should read this book to your children/grandchildren. It's a great way to keep the values and customs alive of our parents and grandparents.

5 out of 5 stars A touching tale about a young girl and an old legend.......1999-12-22

Although I read and reread all of the author's Betsy-Tacy books as a child, I had never heard of "The trees kneel at Christmas" until it was rescued and rereleased by Abdo and Daughters several years ago.

The story was inspired by a legend the author heard from a Lebanese immigrant woman while living in New York. She kept the legend -- that the cedar trees in Lebanon kneel down at midnight on Christmas Eve -- in her mind for quite some time, until a visit to a local school matched the face of a young girl with the story.

The story is told quite simply and timelessly. Young Afify hears the legend of the kneeling cedars from her grandmother and wonders if the trees kneel in Brooklyn, too. The remainder of the story follows her as she sets out in search of a miracle.

                      Book Description

After the fire burned through Carla and Mama's apartment, all Carla had left was her beloved book, "A Pilgrim Thanksgiving." Carla read the book over and over. She pretended to be the smiling Pilgrim girl sitting at the feast table, surrounded by family and friends. A year later, when they were finally in a tiny apartment of their own, Carla asked Mama if they could have a Thanksgiving feast. "Fat chance," said Mama, who thought there was no room--and no extra money--for a big dinner. But Carla didn't give up. She and Julio, her new neighbor and friend, decided the building's lobby would be the perfect location for Thanksgiving dinner. And couldn't the residents all pitch in and bring the food?

5 out of 5 stars Multicultural Thanksgiving story.......2004-02-24

The narrator's dad is a long-haul truck driver who sends a live baby turkey to his son, who lives in New York City with his grandparents. Along with the turkey, he sends instructions to fatten him up for Thanksgiving Day. But by the time dad returns for Thanksgiving, the bird has become a pet, not a meal. The story is quite fun, with just a little tension, but no scary bits. There is a sprinkling of Spanish words throughout the text, and a bilingual glossary at the end of the book. Altogether, the book has about 1300 words.

5 out of 5 stars N.Y. Hispanic family has turkey for dinner!.......1999-11-21

I use this book with at-risk 2nd and 3rd grade readers. It is wonderfully multicultural, and involves a multigenerational,Hispanic family living in New York city at Thanksgiving time. Miguel's father is a long-haul trucker who sends him a live turkey to raise for Thanksgiving dinner. Papa will be home to share it with the family. The predictable happens: boy and turkey fall in love. Miguel tries to reach his father in time to spare Gracias' life. At this point, I have my students write a letter, too, as if it were their pet they wanted to keep. The suspense builds until Gracias follows Miguel to church, and gets blessed by the priest! The grandparents are wonderfully supportive, and Tia Rosa is predictably pessimistic. Gracias comes to Thanksgiving dinner, but not in the way expected. My students make written predictions about how Papa will react, and what will happen next. This book is written by Joy Cowley, who writes many of the books we use in the Reading Recovery Program for at-risk readers in the United States. I really love it as it inspires poor writers to write, and gets everyone involved in the enfolding drama.

If you have small children, their first encounter with the lion can be the stuff bad dreams are made of. Our 16-month-old son was both frightened and intrigued by the lion that came to the Chinese restaurant where our friends' son was enjoying his first birthday. The book follows Ernie Wan through his preparation to his first lion dance one Chinese New Year's day in New York's Chinatown. You see the customs and rituals that lead up to his debut. More important, you see the closeness of his family and the value of rites of passage in gathering people together. My family is not Chinese but my wife and I have immigrant parents. If you are trying to demonstrate why maintaining your cultural heritage is worthwhile, Lion Dancer will support your cause. My son literally drools on the pictures of the Chinese dishes and the kung-fu kicks of the lions amid the firecracker smoke. If I have a single criticism, it's that the pages of this paperback will fall out after repeated reading. And if I'm entitled to menion one mature indulgence, the book includes a section describing the personalities of the various animals in the Chinese lunar year. You might agree that the year you were born is more telling than the month.

5 out of 5 stars our favorite book about Chinese New Year!.......2006-02-21

This is a great non-fiction about Chinese New Year, for ages 4-12! The text is simple enough for younger children and detailed enough to really be informative for older children. Following a young child through his preparations for the celebration immediately brings young readers (and listeners)into the story. Vivid photographs of familiar and novel scenes help children to relate to Ernie Wan while learning about a significant aspect of his culture. Rather than lecturing the reader, this book invites the reader to share in one boy's celebration of the Chinese New Year while teaching about the holiday at the same time. This book has been well-loved by my children (now ages 8, 10, 12) for many years. We are now on our second copy of the book! It comes out every Chinese New Year, and even some other times through out the year. My children often ask to take this book to school to share at Chinese New Year. (Bonus: inside the back cover is an explanation of the Chinese zodiac with years and personality traits.)

Follow Ernie Wan and his family throughout a traditional Chinese (Cantonese) New Year Celebration! Colorful photos and detailed text provide good insight to a fascinating and beautiful culture! Photos of New York's Chinatown and Chinese schools are accompanied by cultural facts. From kung fu school to New Year traditions, this book is more than I expected. The Lion Dance is covered very well, but is certainly not the sole topic of this outstanding book! Ages 4 and up.

For my preschool class, I am pairing this book with an 11' long paper dragon and a stuffed dragon puppet. The children will be making paper lanterns and sampling various Chinese foods. They should really enjoy the unit on Chinese New Year!

She loves cats so it appealed to her - but its a very sweet tale about how the cats work together to grow and harvest their food and then how they prepare it and share it; all done in a rhyming mannner. This is a great story.

                        Book Description

Innovative in perspective, this book emphasizes the extremely close connection between communication and the traditional functions of management. It explores both the objective elements of communication (sender, message, channel and receiver) and the subjective elements (assumptions, purpose — intention/audience, and interpretation. It recognizes — and emphasizes — that human communication is complex and that communication is not the message sent, but the message received. Describes how communication works. Discusses the basic communication skills in listening, public speaking, writing, and networking. Explores communication in relation to management and leadership -- and the communication climate. Addresses specific types of communication that managers need in motivating people, helping teams function, conducting meetings, and managing conflict. Considers special topics in management communication, including ethics, organizational change for total quality, and relating to the wider community. Outlines alternatives for explaining information to diverse audiences. Offers a table of Manager's Tips in each chapter. For managers, directors, and department heads of all types, in all functions, at all levels.

I never had a book like this, this book uses a model that doesn't make sense and you have to have a Ph.D. to make sense out of something so simple. The whole class of 80 students hated this book. There is gotta be a better book for use!

                              Book Description

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) refers to large commercial software packages that promise a seamless integration of information flow through an organization by combining various sources of information into a single software application and a single database. Today, businesses are striving for integration. Not only is accurate and current information needed; success in business today entails a seamless flow in supply chain, excellent customer relationship management, and capabilities to carry out e-commerce. Traditionally, separate units were created to carry out various tasks, and these functional areas would create their own information systems, giving rise to systems that were not integrated. ERP strives to provide a solution to these problems, and this book provides a clear picture of the best methods and practices related to this application system.

From the supplier: There are a number of reasons for the failure of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution in the food and beverage industry. One of the problems that must be addressed prior to investing in an expensive ERP package is the failure to recognize that IT is not the solution to productivity inefficiency. Other problems include not having enough IT-trained personnel, very little input from the plant floor and gaps in corporate communication regarding ERP implementation.
