      Book Description

How do firms cope with changing environments? Is flexibility really the solution? How can we measure a firm's flexibility? Can a more flexible firm be created? Based on an Igor Ansoff Award winning study, Henk Volberda's Building the Flexible Firm shows how flexibility has become the new strategic challenge for contemporary firms. Although traditional organizational forms have worked well in the relatively stable environments of the past, the globalization of markets, rapid technological change, shortening product life cycles, and increasing aggressiveness of competitors have radically altered the ground rules for competing in the 1990s and beyond. Increased competition forces firms to move more quickly and boldly than before, and to experiment in ways that do not conform to traditional administrative theory. This book offers a wealth of insights into the way firms can increase their flexibility. It is based on extensive interviews with practitioners and supported by many longitudinal case studies on flexibility improvement within large corporations. The author provides a strategic framework which explains what types of flexibility are effective under different organizational conditions and environmental characteristics. He also demonstrates an integrated method for diagnosing a firm's flexibility and for guiding the transition to greater flexibility and responsiveness. The Igor Ansoff Award The Igor Ansoff Strategy Award is an international award given to a person who has distinguished himself by making an outstanding theoretical or practical contribution to the development of strategic management and strategic thinking. The award was established in The Netherlands jointly by Coopers and Lybrand and the Faculty of Technical Business Administration of the University of Twente. Igor Ansoff was professor at the Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, the Vanderbilt University, Nashville, the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management, Brussels and Stockholm, and the US International University, San Diego. He has been appointed Fellow by both the American Academy of Management and the International Academy of Management, and is also Honorary Chairman of the Strategic Management Society of Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Mastering the agility/stability paradox in turbulent markets.......1998-07-26

This exceptional book presents an in-depth, scholarly examination of flexible organizations. It provides a framework (or strategic approach) to guide decision makers in developing an organization able to quickly adapt to hyper-competitive challenges. The author shows that to be successful, organizations require a paradoxical balance between flexibility (viewed as the managerial task) and sufficient stability to exploit change (seen as the organization design task). In other words, firms need to balance creativity, innovation, and speed with clarity of focus, coordination and control. This is an extraordinarily thoughtful work that delves deeply into this complex strategic challenge. It includes a comprehensive questionnaire for measuring the environment and the organization in terms of turbulence, flexibility and other dimensions. Highly recommended to all executives engaged in organizational design and strategic planning, and who are willing to tackle an intellectually! demanding book that is well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Important American Historian of the 20th Century.......2003-03-04

When I was in graduate school Charles Beard was one of the figures that everyone loved to trash, but no one had ever read. Professors and their nodding students constantly pointed at Beard as an example of "determinism" or "reductionism" - someone who used a method of analysis that they politically did not agree with. Unfortunately, the current trend in academic history is to scorn any theoretical analysis at all and instead embrace the fad of "post-modernism." In historical writing this means trying to get the subjects to speak for themselves and not to interject your voice or to pass any judgement or impose a grand theory over events - there is no absolute truth so how can you claim to have a true opinion they argue.

Charles Beard helped to found the American Historical Review and wrote The Economic Interpreation to the Constitution - which has put all books since in its shadow. The books that followed this first classic became widely read best sellers. Beard wrote a grand narrative history of the United States from its founding to the 1930's - something very few historians of today would even attempt.

Beard's work has been misunderstood and mischaracterized by people since the 1950's. Barrow's excellent book does a good job of identifying the real sources of Beard's framework and brings Beard's real thoughts back to life. I know of no other book that does this as well as Barrow's.

Scholars of today will profit from this book, because it will help them rediscover a method of analysis that is a useful tool to understanding not only the past, but today.

Beard's primary source of inspiration for his "economic interpretation" was James Madison's Federalist X. The economic intepretation is simple and logical, and can be summed up as follows:

Economic relations - > class structure -> social actors -> events -> economic relations

Economic relations - form the class structure of society - the social actors grow up inside of this structure - their actions and thoughts create the politics and state of society and also its culture and ideology - which in turn effect and can alter the economic relations

Hardly a reductionist theory - but one that takes on an organic life of its own. I believe this is an excellent theoretical view of social life and goes further than "post-modern" type theories which only focus on culture and ideology and are truly reductionist models, because they go no further than where they start.

If you are interested in serious history - history that goes beyond simply recounting events and biographies - you need a intellectual and theoretical underpinning that can be used as an interprative framework to understand what is behind the events that happen. This book will help you understand the thoughts of one man who did just that and was the most famous American historian of the first half of the 20th century. Hard to imagine a historian being truly famous, but he was. He was bigger than Stephen Ambrose during his time and was probably the most influential historian in American history. Only people close were Frederick Jackson Turner, Alfred Mayhan, or Henry Adams - and they were from the century before him.

This is a good book. Clear and concise.

                        Book Description

The Internet and its different tools have brought momentous changes in the way people think, create, store, disseminate and acquire knowledge. Easier access to Internet information resources, the ability to find timely information from different sources such as online databases, and instantaneous communication with experts worldwide, have helped create innovative learning environments and opportunities for learners. These transformations have been reshaping the learning environment, whether in educational institutions or in professional organizations and have led to the emerging of the new phenomenon known as telelearning via the Internet.

Telelearning via the Internet discusses various aspects, issues and possibilities of using the Internet within an Internet-based telelearning and distance education environment. Telelearning via the Internet also provides an excellent coverage of organizational and managerial issues such as copyright, security, accreditation and cost effectiveness of telelearning via the Internet. It explores many possibilities in planning, designing, implementing and managing different opportunities of Internet technology in learning delivery programs. It is an excellent source for educators and trainers who would like to teach online courses via the Internet.

This is a good book on how to be cost effective in using Information Technology.

3 out of 5 stars Some Useful Information But Generally Too High-Level.......1999-09-04

This book was useful to me in certain respects: the information contained in it about data center and software development metrics (two chapters' worth) was valuable and timely. The rest of the book, however, was too high-level to be put to immediate use. The author also included far too many visuals. I found them distracting and not supportive of the text.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed - not up with the times.......1999-08-29

I have just finished reading this book and was quite disappointed. The book is not sufficiently up-to-date and is fairly IBM-oriented. It does explain what best practices are about but does not offer sufficient help for you to actually apply them usefully. It is very general/high level. It also overstates their usefulness and doesn't sufficiently discuss the dangers of using them - they can be a follow the leader tool.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for business today!.......1997-11-23

The book's structure takes the reader on a wonderful road of understanding I/T "Best Practices" in general, to applying models and concepts for continuous improvement. It's written in layperson's terms so even the executive holding the purse strings can easily understand it, while providing sufficient detail for the I/T professional. The models are beautifully composed and relevant to our continually changing business world. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to know about today's technology and how to apply it for competitive advantage and service reliability. An outstanding effort from Mr. Cortada!
