    Product Description

From inauspicious beginnings in the kinetoscope parlors and nickelodeons to the movie palaces of the golden era, and finally to the pared down multiplexes of today, this is the history of motion picture viewing in the nation’s capital and vicinity. The research is supported by numerous interviews. The book includes a 200-page listing of all the movie theaters in the area past and present, with data such as location, dates of operation, architect, and seating capacity, as well as a summary of each theater’s history and current status. Maps, drawings and photographs (most of which have never before been published) round out this comprehensive study.

                        Book Description

East Asian Higher Education: Traditions and Transformations puts East Asian sociopolitical developments in new light by providing new and little-known materials which will be welcomed by researchers in the field. Nineteen scholars cover Burma, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, North Korea, The Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

One main theme of the book is that universities and the administration and proliferation of higher education provide excellent insight into East Asia's ancient, colonial and post-war history and progress.

The book provides incisive analyses of leading issues such as tyranny versus democracy, state-funded schools versus proprietary schools, elitists versus populists, and quality versus quantity.

                        Book Description

Since its publication in 1983, The Marketing Imagination has been widely praised as the classic, all-inclusive "Levitt on Marketing." Now Theodore Levitt -- renowned as the Harvard Business School's "guru of marketing" -- has newly expanded his original work to recap the developing globalization debate and to respond to his critics. He has also added his famed McKinsey Award-winning essay "Marketing Myopia," and included detailed accounts of how to maximize the product life cycle and achieve the delicate balance between innovation and imitation. As before, this new edition of The Marketing Imagination shows Levitt at his best -- sharp, knowledgeable, erudite, and, yes, as imaginative as ever.

2 out of 5 stars Too Out-of-date to Be Useful.......2007-07-28

This book may have been useful when it first came out 25 years ago but it is too dated to be applicable today. While I often find gems of information in older books, this doesn't happen to be one of them. Save your money or buy it used.

                        5 out of 5 stars Marketing Myopia.......2005-08-22

                        1. The purpose of business is to create and keep customers. Market myopia is a corporate conscious raising experience designed to narrowly direct all energies at satisifying the customer. Marketing is providing what the buyer wants and marketing's purpose is too keep the customer. Selling is mass producing a product. The value is the asset and the asset value is the capacity for it too generate revenue. Selling focuses on production and packaging.

                        2. To do that you have to produce and deliver goods and services that people want and value at prices and under conditions that are reasonably attractive relative to those offered by others to a proportion of customer large enough to make those prices and conditions possible. (Set a price people will buy at and let production efficiency drive down cost)

                        3. To continue to do that, the enterprise must produce revenue in excess of costs in sufficient quantity and with sufficient regularity to attract and hold investors in the enterprise, and must keep at least abreast and some ahead of competitive offerings.

In setting your company goal, always set the standard in terms of production volume, profit, and expanded stockholder equity. Never state them in terms of market factors, customer need fulfillment, customer service objectives, or market targets.

                        4. No enterprise, no matter how small, can do any of this by mere instinct or accident. It has to clarify its purposes, strategies, and plans, and the larger the enterprise the greater the necessity that these be clearly written down, clearly communicated, and frequently reviewed by the senior members of the enterprise.

Market Imagination. Nothing drives imagination like imagination. Imagination starts things going and work makes it happen. Marketing imagination is the starting point of success in marketing. Marketing brings understanding about customers customs and their problems. Marketing provides a means to capture their attention and their customs. Businesses need to findout what problems people are trying too solve. Differentiation represents an imaginative response to the existence of potential customers in such a way as to give them compelling reasons to want to do business with the originating supplier. Marketing provides deeper understanding of consumer behavior. Marketing means asking the customer to do something different than they normally do. The discovery of the simple essence is the essence of marketing imagination. Imagination means constructing a mental picture of what is or not actually present and what has never been actually experienced. Imagination involves intellectual and artistic inventiveness. It means discoverying why customers prefer your product over a competitor and emphasizing the differences through marketing to new customers and existing customers. The essence of competition is providing something different and providing it better than your competitor. These differences weighin strong with customers than price.

Every major industry was once a growth industry. Failure is at the top. One after One company products were runaway substitutes for the products they replaced. The self deceiving cycle includes four factors: 1. The belief that growth is assured by an expanding and more affluent population. 2. The belief that there is no competitive substitute 3. Too much faith in mass production and in the advantages of rapidly declining unit prices as output rises 4. a preoccupation with a product.

                        5. In all cases there must be an appropriate system of rewards, audits, and controls to assure that what's intended get properly done and, when not, that its quickly rectified.

                        5 out of 5 stars A timeless classic.......2004-06-18

Though it was first released in 1983, I still do not believe there is a better book on marketing that The Marketing Imagination. It's not a "marketing fad of the week" kind of book, but rather a practically worded treatise on basic concepts that are more often than not overlooked or ignored by those who chase fads and wonder why they're not more successful. Chapter 4, "Differentiation---of Anything" should be tatooed on the forehead of every marketer.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated, lacks substance, dwells on marketing basics.......2003-07-04

I bought this book based one some of the reviews on this site. Unfortunately, this time they failed me. The book is outdated (as it was published 20 years ago) and lacks substance. If you have little or no knowledge of marketing, this might be a decent intro for you. It is relatively easy to read and dwells on few main concepts. However, if you have taken a marketing course in college or have read much on marketing, you will likely find this book dull and uninformative, as I did. Many of the big revelations in the book seem to me to be common sense. Maybe 20 years ago it was revolutionary, but somehow I doubt it. Also, some of the arguments he makes early in the book have been proven wrong by history...All in all, I would probably avoid this book. I was hoping to get some new insights, but this book sure didn't help. If you must buy it, buy a used copy as it certainly isn't worth [the money].

4 out of 5 stars The Marketing Intangible Products!.......2002-03-26

I first learnt the ¡§Intangible¡¨ when I was in secondary school. Then, I have learnt more about ¡§Tangible Product¡¨ and ¡§Intangible Product¡¨ in marketing course in the university. The course also taught me the strategies of promoting the ¡§Intangible Product¡¨ with its special characteristics.

This book also taught me about ¡§Intangible¡¨. For example, it would teach you the intangibles of the tangible products, such as the quality of salesman, delivery.

But it¡¦s really new for me that, the book explained the marketing intangible products. That is the ¡§promises¡¨. The first thing come to my mind is the ¡§Service Guarantees¡¨. The ¡§Service Guarantees¡¨ have done what is mentioned by the author, to tangibilize the intangible product. It is really important that the ¡§Service Guarantees¡¨ on one hand, gave the customers confidence that they will be satisfied from the service. On the other hand, the ¡§Service Guarantees¡¨ would also remind the customers how they benefit from our product or service. Since people would trend to form the habits after repeat the same behavior for several times. After that, they do continue to do that without pay attention to details. So, I think that it is very important for the marketer to promote benefit that customers receive from our product or service.

                          Book Description

The ISO 9000-3 Guideline is meant to serve as a guide for the application of the ISO 9001 Standard to the development, supply, and maintenance of software. The Standard and Guideline are being used throughout the software industry as a benchmark for software product and process quality. As yet few software organizations meet the process quality required to meet the Standard, but increasingly the industry will seek to ensure that software organizations are certified under the Standard. This book presents senior managers, software project managers and software developers with a simple, concise, step-by-step explanation of the Guideline and a hands-on means to implement practices and procedures needed to meet the requirements of the ISO 9001 Standard and the ISO 9000-3 Guideline. The authors discuss the principles and practice of software engineering and provide templates of engineering documents to accompany the Guideline. As a result, this book will help software companies define their own software engineering processes to develop high quality software products.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling reasons to read this book ..........2001-07-10

If you're a U.S. company that is not doing international business you might wonder why even bother with ISO 9000-3. While I can make compelling arguments for and against software and technical services companies pursuing registration, my stance would be dependent upon a set of conditions. With respect to applying the elements of ISO 9001 in accordance with guidelines for software development, supply and maintenance set forth in ISO 9000-3 I can only argue for.

The book: The first three chapters are brief and take only 24 pages to set the context. Chapter 1 introduces ISO 9000 as an international standard, discusses the relationship between 9001 and 9000-3, and gives good advice on the semantics of 9001's "shalls" and 9000-3's "shoulds". The next chapter provides an overview of software engineering and key elements in which 9000-3 will support. Chapter 3 discusses theory, concept, interpretation and critique of ISO 9000-3.

Chapter 4 comprehensively covers scope and overview, and provides a framework for the rest of the book. The key areas discussed in this chapter are the quality system framework, life cycle activities and supporting activities. Taken together these areas encompass ISO 9000-3. Chapters 5 through 23 are each devoted to a single area, giving you sufficient detail to understand the issues and factors. What I like most is the way the authors skillfully describe the contents of ISO 9000-3 guidelines in a readable manner without introducing ambiguity. Making specifications readable without introducing fuzziness or uncertainty is one of the most difficult aspects of technical writing and the authors manage this well.

An added bonus, and the reason I like this book so much, is the quality handbook that is provided in chapter 24. Including the eleven attachments, each of which in an invaluable artifact itself, this chapter is 50 pages in length (about 20% of the book), and serves as one of the best examples of a quality manual you'll find.

So, why even bother? First, you do not need to pursue ISO 9001 registration to benefit from this book (and if you are, you need to get a book on the ISO 9000:2000 version to get up-to-speed). If you are using the capability maturity model as a goal, the procedures given in this book map nicely to CMM process areas and practices. Moreover, in the "e" world where supply chain management is one of the current buzz words, the focus of 9000-3 might be a good fit into your operational posture (whether as a developer/integrator or service provider) because ISO 9000-3 is slanted towards the customer-supplier relationship, whereas the CMM is more concerned with suppliers. The real reason, however, for using 9000-3 guidelines is they will assure you of attaining repeatability in all of your key processes related to applications or service delivery, and will lay the foundation for any additional quality paradigm or framework you deploy in the future.

                          5 out of 5 stars ISO 9000-3 : Good book to have.......2000-12-23

Very practical, easy to implement the ISO standards, practices and processes. If you are planning to register for this standards, the book will be good hand-book.

                            Book Description

The ISO 9000 quality assurance standards have generated considerable interest and controversy in the business world. This book provides an in-depth, critical evaluation of the effects of these standards, investigating the experiences of both Danish and international firms. Central questions addressed include: Given what the ISO 9000 standards were intended to achieve, to what degree have they lived up to their potential? Do the benefits justify the costs? Why does quality assurance work better in certain firms and organizations than others? Why have the ISO 9000 standards enjoyed more success in industry than in the public sector? To structure the analysis, the book utilizes the economic concept of asymmetric information. For the executive, this book is an instructive introduction to ISO 9000. For the business student, the book places quality assurance in the context of modern managerial economics. Lee Davis is Associate Professor at the Institute of International Economics and Management, Copenhagen Business School. This book represents the culmination of four years of work on ISO 9000, both as a researcher and practitioner.

4 out of 5 stars Communication Skills Review.......2007-04-16

If you would like guidance on how to improve your group or team in your business or organization, this book is excellent. Caroline Brem does an excellent job of explaining the vital communication skills necessary to build a good team. It is very well written and I think one of the reasons this book is so helpful is because Brem is a teacher and a trainer in the communications field. She has first hand experience in this topic and I think it helped me become more intrigued when reading her book because of her familiarity with communication in teams.
I think her book is very organized in the way it is set up, which makes it easy for people to read. Each chapter is set up similarly and I think this is helpful for readers because it creates an easy reading format. Every chapter discusses the necessary communication skills to improve upon in each stage of a team. I think Brem does an excellent job of explaining each chapter because at the beginning of each chapter she attempts to relate the topics to something the reader can understand. She explains things very thoroughly and she even breaks some difficult aspects of communication down so the reader can better understand it.
I really enjoyed reading this book because Brem really goes into depth in each of the chapters. She explains each stage and the communication skills or possible problems of each stage meticulously so when finished reading, the reader is not confused.
Another aspect of the book that I really enjoyed was her use of examples. In most of the chapters Brem sets up a hypothetical situation and goes into depth on the communication that exists in each of those circumstances. I think this really helps people to relate to working in teams and also helps them apply what they have learned in this book to their existing teams.
Overall, Brem set up this book very well and she explained everything in great detail. When I finished reading this book, I felt that I had learned a lot more about communication in teams. I think I am now able to effectively work in groups and teams. This is not only a book for businesses that are reinventing themselves, as the publisher indicates, but I think this book can be intended towards individuals who are looking to improve their group communication skills in their daily lives.

                                    Book Description

The use of advertising by competing firms to achieve and maintain profitable market positions is an important subject of scholarly research and practical relevance. This book reviews previous empirical and analytical research on advertising competition and extends this research in an analytical direction -- by deriving closed-loop (perfect) advertising strategies and comparing them to open-loop strategies -- for duopolistic situations. Three types of models -- Lancaster, Vidale-Wolfe, and diffusion -- are investigated and steady-state analysis shows distinct differences between closed-loop and open-loop strategies. Finally, empirical research is identified to sort out what type of advertising strategy is used by competitors and a methodology is advanced, and empirical propositions are offered, to encourage research in the direction of empirical validation.

For many companies, the past decade has been marked by a sense of turbulence and redefinition. The growing role of information technologies and service businesses has prompted companies to reconsider how they are structured and even what business they are in. These changes have also affected how people work, what skills they need, and what kind of careers they expect. One critical change in how people work, argues Larry Hirschhorn, is that they are expected to bring more of themselves psychologically to the job. To facilitate this change, it is necessary to create a new culture of authority--one in which superiors acknowledge their dependence on subordinates, subordinates can challenge superiors, and both are able to show their vulnerability.

The first chapters of this book examine the covert processes by which people caught between the old and new culture of authority neither suppress nor express their feelings. Feelings are activated but not directed toward useful work. The case studies of this process are instructive and moving. The book then explores how organizations can create a culture of openness in which people become more psychologically present. In part, the process entails an understanding of the changes taking place in how we experience our own identity at work and that of "others" in society at large. To do this, the book suggests, we need a social policy of forgiveness and second chances.

If people are going to bring more of themselves psychologically to work, a new culture of authority characterized by openness must be created. Hirschhorn explores how organizations transition from traditional power hierarchy to this new culture, involving a social policy of forgiveness and second chances. A thoughtful and important work. 3 out of 5 stars A practical guide to 21st century, but not easy to read..........2002-11-05

It is the first time I'm reading a book from James W. Cortada and I can say that it was not an easy reading for me. The author is writing in the preface "The chapters help to catalog and rationalize the changes underway and how work must be done", but too much use of cataloguing and rationalizing is harmful for the reader who is losing his way in all the firsts, seconds, thirds, etc. at quite every page. It makes difficult to follow the thinking of the author.

Main idea developed in 21st century business is that change "is occurring more in an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary manner" and that "we must manage in an environment rooted in the past and yet stepping forward into a new future." This duality gives possibilities to build our future on past sound well chosen practices even if some "old knowledge and practices increasingly are competitive disadvantages as firms move from the Second Industrial Age into portions of the new Information Age."

James W. Cortada is showing us that the Information Age is more than technology and that managers need to understand that the sources of profit are changing. They need to understand how profits are made and to understand the effects of globalization and digitization within a context of emerging political realities. Information is becoming an important part of a new value proposition and must be leveraged by developing networks, learning organizations, and knowledge-workers.

Based on the evolution concept the author develops how to use best practices, benchmarking and process management approaches to give us the assets to understand how waves of change work and to create a virtuous circle for developing learning organizations.

But learning organizations are networks of knowledge workers, which are increasing in number with the emergence of information-based economy. That means that knowledge management is becoming an important part of a manager's job. To understand that knowledge management is operating within a business ecology, which can be described as an environment of enablers, inhibitors, and drivers is crucial to be able to leverage knowledge to generate profits in business or efficiencies and quality of performance in governments.

The use of Internet, which is a low-cost way of moving information around has a big impact on knowledge management, but also on work organization by enabling collaboration and alliances without constraints of space and time. This allows closer partnerships with suppliers, customers and even competitors, making organizations' traditional boundaries more flexible. But Internet is also an interactive tool with the impact on organizations moving from Second Industrial Age mass production to Information Age mass customization, when not made-to-order.

"The most important use of Internet today is in the fundamental redesign of supply chains", which "are making it possible to squeeze out inefficiencies, improving productivity while allowing firms to connect in new ways to suppliers and customers." The author is sharing with us IBM's interesting practical experience in this field.

The final chapter is showing us how we can manage the change to enter in the New Digital Economy, because "we have more control over the future of our enterprises than we realize."

This book is finally replacing the move to the "New Economy" in a context we are leaving in, and wants to convince us that we already have many tools in our hands to enter properly the Information Age. Some Great Reading at the end of the book consolidates the evolution approach demonstrated by giving us roots in the past literature.

5 out of 5 stars The business world as it is today and will be tomorrow.......2001-01-20

I found this to be an insightful read with lots of ideas to ponder. Cortada hits on several hot buttons of the new economy--technology, continuous training and best practices, knowledge workers and knowledge management, the Internet, and supply chain management. He makes the important distinction that the changes going on today represent more than just technology. He talks about the search for the new value proposition, globabilization, how to leverage knowledge workers, the preeminence of the supply chain, and lots more. His book is not just descriptive. In several chapters he includes an "implications and actions" section that is very helpful in thinking about "what now?" The book also includes useful diagrams to illustrate his points.

At under 250 pages, it's a really good summary of what's going on in the new economy, and I highly recommend it.
