Del. Dental records confirm ID of pilot
FAA awaiting tests in N.H. crash case
The identity of the pilot who crashed his corporate plane into his family's new home in Amherst, N.H., Saturday was confirmed through dental records yesterday morning by a New Hampshire medical examiner. The remains of Louis W. Joy III were so badly burnt it was impossible to identify him by other means, said Dr. Thomas Gilson, deputy chief medical examiner. Joy's dental records from Delaware, where he and his wife lived before moving to Amherst last year, matched those of the pilot.
Gilson said the Federal Aviation Administration is conducting tests to determine whether drugs or alcohol were in Joy's system. The results will not be back for several days, he said.
On Saturday morning, Joy smashed his airplane into the second floor of the the 5,800-square-foot house that he, his wife, and 8-year-old daughter moved into four months ago. No one was home at the time and Joy was the only person killed or injured.
Joy died quickly from the cumulative effect of the crash, Gilson said. There was so much damage to his body ''you can't really separate out'' what killed him, Gilson said.
Joy's body was recovered from the cockpit of the plane, which ended up in the basement of the home, said Rick Crocker, chief of the Amherst Fire Department.
Crocker said the plane clipped trees before slamming into the second floor from the east. He estimated that the plane was descending at a 45-degree angle when it struck the house.
A thousand-gallon propane tank in the yard, as well as the high-octane aviation fuel in the plane's tank, made the fire ''extremely hot,'' Crocker said. ''The radiant heat from this fire was tremendous.''
Amherst police served Joy with a restraining order at his home the night before the crash, according to Police Chief Gary Maguire. The restraining order, which temporarily banished Joy from the hillside house on High Meadow Lane also awarded custody of the girl temporarily to his wife, Jo.
The affidavit supporting the order was sealed by a judge Monday morning at the request of Jo Joy's lawyer, David Lauren, who cited concerns about the daughter's age.
Lauren could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Sources who have seen the order said Joy was not accused of physically abusing his wife.
Joy, 43, was a published author, business consultant, and motivational speaker. He had founded the consulting firm Manufacturing Excellence Inc., to which the plane was registered.
Neighbors in Newark, Del., where Joy lived with his family from 1992 until they moved to New Hampshire, said he was a reclusive eccentric who nailed all the windows shut at his home and became angry with a prospective buyer of the house when she asked if he would remove a fence.
With his wife, Joy coauthored the 1993 book ''Frontline Teamwork: One Company's Story of Success.''
The house, which was destroyed by the crash and ensuing blaze, was owned by Jo Joy, according to records filed at the Hillsborough County registrar of deeds. The house was worth about $750,000, the builder said.

            Book Description

The controversy over culture and British 20th century economic performance has raged for many decades. Now, through selecting a control population, the link between British and American cultural values and entrepreneurship is finally unearthed. Using new evidence of Jewish immigration, mobility, and assimilation, Andrew Godley shows that despite similar backgrounds and opportunities, the Jews in London were far less entrepreneurial, preferring to remain as workers. However, in America Jews moved en masse into self-employment creating an innovative, dynamic economy while Britain remained stagnant and conservative.

This book is an absolutely wonderful resource for teachers who feel they might be at the end of their chain or are simply looking for a way of revitalizing their classroom. The ideas are hysterical, practical, and easy to implement in most cases. Just reading the book can make you laugh and get you ready to brighten up your classroom with laughter. We all deserve a little laughter in our day, students and teachers alike - this book is highly recommended! :)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent teacher resource!.......2000-04-20

"If they're Laughing..." was a great read for two main reasons. Firstly, in today's classrooms sometimes there is not a lot to laugh about. This book allows the teacher to find ways to laugh with the students everyday. I believe that students that laugh and enjoy school will work hard to get to school everyday. Secondly, even if you don't use these ideas in class, there are lots of funny stories and anecdotes. I was chuckling to myself as I was reading and relaxing (this is definitely not a typical textbook / teacher guide read). If you are looking to add some fun and humour to your classroom, "If They're Laughing..." is a MUST! END

                          Book Description

Project management can be broadly defined as the process of managing, allocating and timing resources to achieve given objectives in an efficient and expedient manner. The builders of the pyramids in Egypt and the Maya temples in Central America are often cited as the world's first project managers. Without the help of computers or planning software, they managed exceptionally complex projects, using the simplest of tools. Nowadays projects, sets of activities which have a defined start point and a defined end state and which pursue a defined goal and use a defined set of resources, come in many and various forms. The Manhattan project which created the first atom bomb, the Apollo moon program, the construction of the Channel tunnel, the design of the Airbus, the development of new products, the construction of large office buildings, the relocation of a factory, the installation of a new information system, as well as the development of a marketing plan are all well-known examples of projects.

Our objectives in writing Project Scheduling: A Research Handbook are threefold: (1) Provide a unified scheme for classifying the numerous project scheduling problems occurring in practice and studied in the literature; (2) Provide a unified and up-to-date treatment of the state-of-the-art procedures developed for their solution; (3) Alert the reader to various important problems that are still in need of considerable research effort. As such, this book should differ from other project scheduling books in its use of an innovative unified resource scheduling classification scheme, and a unified treatment of both exact and heuristic solution procedures.

Project Scheduling: A Research Handbook has been divided into four parts. Part I consists of three chapters on the scope and relevance of project scheduling, on the nature of project scheduling, and finally on the introduction of a unified scheme that will be used in subsequent chapters for the identification and classification of the project scheduling problems studied in this book. Part II focuses on the time analysis of project networks. Part III carries the discussion further into the crucial topic of scheduling under scarce resources. Part IV deals with robust scheduling and stochastic scheduling issues. Numerous tables and figures are used throughout the book to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of the discussions. For the interested and motivated reader, the problems at the end of each chapter should be considered as an integral part of the presentation.

                          4 out of 5 stars Biased review.......2002-09-04

As a contributor to this book, my review is certainly biased, but I nonetheless found the chapters I did not contribute to very useful. This book covers a wide range of research topics from modeling (E/R, UML) to object-oriented considerations, active databases, semi-structured documents (XML), and the web. Each topic is treated through several thourough papers. I recommend it for both advanced database courses/students and researchers.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Advanced Topics in Database Research.......2002-08-26

As a college professor, I have found a plethora of applications for "Advanced Topics in Database Research". I recommend this book to my students, to aid them in their courses. For example, the UML chapters are invaluable for documentation of object-oriented language applications in my Systems Analysis class. Further, the topics covered on cardinality and object-oriented database benchmarks are extremely useful in my Database class. My students can often find the answers to their questions on database applications within the content of this book series.
