Quality Through Design: Experimental Design, Off-line Quality Control, and Taguchi's Contributions (Oxford Series on Advanced Manufacturing)
N. Logothetis , and H. P. Wynn Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0198593953 |
Book Description
From a review by P. D. T. O`Connor in the Journal of Quality and Reliability Engineering: `The authors clearly state their objectives, to explain the Taguchi methods, describing their advantages and disadvantages, and to describe extensions to the ideas, such as the use of simulations driven by computer aided design, and response surface and other optimization methods. They seek to make friends among engineers whilst pleading for mercy from statisticians. In fact they do rather more, since the book covers the general principles of experimental design in some detail, thereby setting Taguchi's contribution in context. The result is a very good book, the best so far on the Taguchi phenomenon.' This important and acclaimed text is not available in paperback. This book describes the theoretical background to the techniques of experimental design and quality control that are now ssen of fundamental importance in the engineering and and process industries. The approach is two-fold; first the authors emphasise the importance of examples - mostly from the engineering industry - to illustrate the principles of Taguchi's methods. Secondly, they draw on methods available in statistics which together with the special Taguchi methodology and philosophy should form the backbone of a post-Taguchi methodology in off-line quality improvements. This paperback edition will be welcomed by the many students and teachers on undergraduate and graduate courses in design of experiments and quality control.

Solid Popular Treatment of Effectiveness Improvement Methods.......2000-07-08
The key subjects of the book include environmental scanning for irresistible forces, value chain analysis for locating opportunities to improve (especially by reducing cycle times for things like new product development and serving customers), continuous improvement methods, better leadership styles, empowered cultures, self-directed teams, and partnership relationships through outsourcing and alliances.
The vision for the future is that environmental scanning will locate the pent-up demand for products and the relevant windows of opportunity. Value chain anslysis will focus on where cycle time can and must be reduced. Continuous improvement will use teamwork to reduce cycle times.
The examples in the book are well chosen. My only complaint about them is that they lean a little too heavily on General Electric as a source. Typically, however, they are actually examples rather than case histories.
I was positively impressed by the fact that the book addressed dealing with irresistible forces and stalls that delay effectiveness and progress in companies.
I rated the book down by one star for two reasons: (1) the thinking was focused too much on the idea of being responsive rather than on being in a proactive cause of irresistible forces and (2) the risks associated with speeding up cycle time were not fully explored. Many people have had serious problems with such efforts.
The book is very well researched and is a good guide to the foundation work that others have done earlier that lies behind the popular versions in this book. You can start here, and then dive into the source books as appropriate to your interests and needs. Starting here will save you a lot of time in scanning the literature of these subjects.
Good luck in turning irresistible forces into your permanent allies!

British Trade Unions since 1933 (New Studies in Economic and Social History)
Chris Wrigley Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521572312 |
Book Description
In reviewing major issues concerning the history of British trade unions in the last two-thirds of the twentieth century, this book discusses many controversial aspects of trade unions. It includes their economic impact (a cause of higher unemployment and lower productivity?) and their influence on government (unelected partners?). The book provides students with an accessible introduction to the recent history of British trade unionism.Download Description
This textbook reviews major issues concerning the history of British trade unions in the last two-thirds of the twentieth century. Even with the decline in membership of the 1980s and 1990s, trade unions in Britain have remained the largest voluntary organisations in the country and the total membership has remained larger than in most other countries. The book discusses many major aspects of trade unionism and many controversies concerning it, including strikes (sometimes seen as a peculiarly 'British disease'). Trade union presence in the labour market has been deemed a cause of higher unemployment and lower productivity. The trade unions have been accused of being insensitive on gender and ethnicity. They have also been accused of being corporatist, unelected partners in government (especially in the 1940-1979 period). Overall, this book gives students a lucid and up-to-date introduction to the recent history of British trade unionism.

A Problem-Finding Approach to Effective Corporate Planning
Robert J. Thierauf Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0899302629 |
Book Description
Following Thomas Fuller's dictum that "a danger foreseen is half avoided," Thierauf has developed a technique called problem finding which allows corporate planners to go beyond problem solving to confront future problems and identify future opportunities. This approach contrasts with typical problem-solving efforts which are based on the "management by exception" principle, that is, things that have gone wrong are corrected after the fact. Problem solving is typically applied to short-, medium-, and long-range problems, which the author terms "operational," "tactical," and "strategic," respectively. In this volume, the author demonstrates how the problem finding approach can be applied to all three types of problems with vastly improved results, and illustrates his points with real-world examples.

Trade Unionism and Industrial Relations in the Commonwealth Caribbean: History, Contemporary Practice and Prospect (Contributions in Labor Studies)
Lawrence A. Nurse Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 031328380X |
Book Description
This study analyzes the critical factors that have shaped the character of trade unionism in the Commonwealth Caribbean, as well as the major challenges that currently confront trade union practice. Particular emphasis is placed on the sociological foundations of labor law and the role of the state, in addition to the shape and contours of future industrial relations practice in the region. This unique analysis is placed within a theoretical framework that sheds light on the role of trade unions in a peripheral capitalist social formation. This approach exposes the contradictions that characterize trade union practice and defines the role of the state in an economy that performs a particular function in the international division of labor. This work compels a rethinking of some important questions in industrial relations, including the character and ideological orientation of Caribbean unions, the nature of and fundamental reasons for state involvement in industrial relations and how the future of industrial relations practice may be shaped. The book will be of interest to scholars and practitioners in industrial relations, labor history and studies, and the economics of labor.

A smattering of ideas but not a battleplan.......2005-01-20
Intro to the series.......2003-09-27
If you really want to build a world class infrastructure look to _IT Systems Management_ by Rich Schiesser. It's also in this series and is everything this book is not.
_IT Systems Management_ does not really cover desktop support/helpdesk issues, its one minor shortcoming. For that look to _IT Problem Management_ by Gary Walker, also in this series.
You'll find both _IT Systems Management_ and _IT Problem Management_ here at Amazon, and they are both highly reviewed and they will be much more helpful than this book.
Really, really bad.......2003-04-02
Maybe the authors knew what they were doing by telling us to go read their other books.
Disappointing. Don't expect insights nor explanations..........2002-09-22
ABOUT ITS VALUE: It seems to me that the author has succeed reorganizing some IT departments and now he wants to write about his experiences. But how would a consultant benefit himself from reading another one's experiences when there aren't explanations, recommendations, choices, roadmaps, deployment guidelines, impact analysis (budget, time, employee morale, issues, risks, etc.). Buy the book only if you want to know what could be going wrong at your IT department, not as a guide for building your new IT infrastructure.
Disappointing. Don't expect insights nor explanations..........2002-09-22
ABOUT ITS VALUE: The author has succeed reorganizing IT departments and he wants to write about the importance of applying mainframe administration paradigm to client/server solutions. The book is helpful only if the reader wants to know what could be wrong at the IT Department. Although there is a proposed model, there aren't specific recommendations, choices, roadmaps, deployment guidelines, impact analysis (budget, time, employee morale, issues, risks, etc.). The model isn't complete. The author doesn't explain how to structure and integrate applications development teams, corporate applications administration, decentralized IT support personnel, and outsourced areas among other important functions. The project management function is mentioned but its explanation is avoided.
