Book Description
Business enterprises are transforming their core practices in the digital age. The emerging imperative is to become super-flexible, in order to thrive, or, at least survive, in volatile environments. Super-flexibility refers to the ability to be agile and versatile, like an entrepreneurial company, coupled with the capacity to remain robust and resilient, much like an established company. Super-flexible enterprises move swiftly, manage for the moment, and ride successive waves of technological innovation, while providing a few enduring anchors of stability and cohesion.
This book details how knowledge enterprises can harness uncertainty by becoming super-flexible. Based on over 20 years of practical experience in Silicon Valley, the authors present conceptual frameworks, illustrative examples and practical lessons for strategizing, organizing and managing knowledge-based enterprises in turbulent settings.
Features
* Combines theoretical concepts with practical lessons
* Addresses the challenges facing the new generation of entrepreneurial, knowledge-based companies
* Details how established enterprises can learn from Silicon Valley in order to adapt to new realities and how they can harness emerging opportunities
* Distills 20 years of field research and practical experience with a diverse range of tech companies in Silicon Valley.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent in both style and substance.......2005-05-17
This is a crisply written, elegant book that analyses and describes the practices of silicon valley in a way that is at once readable, informative, and inspirational. In less than 200 pages, the authors describe (with entertaining and instructive examples interspersed) the silicon valley ecosystem. This ecosystem has been resiliant through the ups and downs of the past 20 years, and has been the engine behind the productivity of the US economy.
It is said that if you really know your stuff, you can describe it simply and clearly. Bahrami and Evans know their stuff. They have lived and breathed with the creators of silicon valley for 20+ years, and the book is peppered with insights and personal anecdotes, and quotes from personal conversations with some of the legends of silicon valley.
This is a book that would be equally applicable to the academic, the educator, and the entrepreneur. This is a must read for communities outside silicon valley that have wrestled over how to create entrepreneurial energy in their midst (European and Asian governments come to mind). The formula for success is spelled out (though how to get there is less clear).
I found the book to be particularly good at surfacing broadly applicable principles. The phrase they coin, super-flexibility, is expressive and right-on. The impressive bibliography shows they have done their homework.
This book is a good read: well-written, fast paced, analytical and anecdotally rich. It fills a real need. Though I have lived in silicon valley for almost 3 decades, I learned a lot by reading it, and would recommend it broadly.
A rigorous conceptualization.......2004-12-23
This is a mind-blowing book, bulit on the authors 20-years experience. I would recommend this book to those with a research orientation. Read it, and u will find it really offers an integrated view of flexibility better than any one else. The only drawback lies with weak applications of managerial mechanisms.

Book Description
This study investigates the concept of customer-focused performance and its key determinants in China, integrating service marketing literature with that of strategic management.
Book Description
Moving towards the zenith of the technological age brings with it an ever-increasing amount of uncertainty, change and flux. Academic, business and consultative commentators around the world have for years been speculating on the divergent courses we may take through the information maze, and on the different possibilities we may attain when we get there. What is needed now is not another set of possibilities, but an entirely new way of looking, seeing and responding. The worldwide turbulence will require different perspectives on organizations, different styles of leadership, and perhaps most important, the strategic flexibility on which this volume focuses. This is summed up by Gary Hamel and C. K. Prahalad: "Developing a program of ideas new ideas, new theory, new applications, new concepts that are relevant to a manager facing the new millennium To do that we need to escape old constraints, old thinking, old questions, and address everything that is new. We hope that we can work together to help set the research agenda for the field of strategic management in the year 2000 and beyond. Lets break out of old paradigms; lets challenge received dogma; lets have the courage to ask new questions; lets rekindle our passion for relevance."

Book Description
Many companies refuse to face the reality that their businesses are in trouble or that their strategic positions are wrong. Whether a product line is no longer profitable, foreign competition has slowed growth, or technological changes have left them behind, many otherwise well-managed companies hang on for too long to the status quo. In this inflexible posture, managements time and talent go to waste, assets grow sterile, and technology falls behind.
This book will help managers overcome the exit barriers that hamper strategic flexibility. Based on innovative studies of 192 firms within Sixteen industries, the ideas presented here are applicable to almost any industry and any type of firm. Harrigan discusses the major strategic decisions facing executives today, including guerrilla strategies of underdog competitors, entry and exit barriers, the use of joint ventures to cope with the uncertainties created by erratic growth, and the management of change. She focuses on the shortcomings of vertical integration, developing a framework for better make-or-buy decisions. The effects of exit barriers on firms' strategic flexibility are detailed, and managerial tools to cope with high barriers and declining businesses are introduced.
Strategic Flexibility is organized to provide easy reference for managers seeking to find out what strategies have worked and why. This book offers practical, proven ways for managers to expand the flexibility and responsiveness of their companies to new competitive conditions.

From the supplier: This article discusses various and alternative forms of corporate strategy developed with respect to current industrial restructuring and transition towards flexible production. Corporate strategies are distinguished according the size of firms and their organizational structure. The point is not to establish an exhaustive typology of strategies but to elaborate the concept of variety in flexible organization of production and markets. For each type of corporate strategy four major options are analyzed: interfirm networks, internal organization of production, labor market, and innovation. The article concludes that the strategic choices made by firms are influenced more by local socioeconomic factors than by global models which apply to all firms' sites and operations. Description:
The past decade has witnessed an increase of interest in flexibility, which bestows on a firm the ability to respond promptly to market opportunities and changing technologies. The development of capabilities to be flexible rests on the mandate of top management, helps firms manage environmental uncertainty, and tends to enhance firm performance. This research paper aims to establish an analytical approximation that considers how the determinants of manufacturing flexibility at the system level affect the desired strategic change in organizations, as well as subsequent performance. We propose the hypotheses that both environmental factors and internal resources affect flexibility, this latter aspect influencing the organization's performance. The problems that stem from measuring manufacturing flexibility in terms of fit were also analyzed. In order to do this, we have made a wide-ranging trans-national study, within the framework of the European Union, using data from 403 European firms. The Structural Equation Model (SEM) technique has been used to contrast the hypotheses. The results show that manufacturing flexibility at system level can be a critical factor in the process of strategic change, which means that it can have an impact on the desirability of strategic change or on the more specific strategic fit.

Book Description
This book is the first comprehensive treatment of the history of British science and technology in relation to economic performance. Using a wealth of previously unknown statistical data, David Edgerton draws new and controversial conclusions about British innovation and technical training since 1870, and provides a unique guide to the debates around the subject. This book will be of interest to economic historians and political scientists, as well as scientists and engineers, and will be invaluable to students approaching the subject for the first time.
Book Description
An exploration of the cultural background of modern Britain's economic malaise. Traces the development of a pervasive middle and upper class frame of mind hostile to industrialism and economic growth from the mid-19th century to the present.
Customer Reviews:
'England is the country and the country is England'.......2004-02-10
Martin J. Wiener does an excellent job describing England's lack of committment to the industrial spirit and the very real economic impact such a philosophical malaise engendered.
The author logically begins his thesis by pointing to 19th Century English cultural and political elites from across the political spectrum who decried the mechanical horrors of the Industrial Revolution. From the 'philosophical radical' JS Mill to the pragmatic Conservative Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin (ironically, the son of an industrialist), Wiener displays a general consensus among the ruling and influential elites of England that industrial development is, essentially, not right for 'Little England.' Other Conservatives at the turn of the century, such as Lord E. Percy, felt that laissez-faire was best left with America as the U.S. 'was more favorably placed for her less noble experiment of unrestrained growth.'
I disagree with previous Reader's (Silicon Valley) judgement that Wiener fails to provide 'provide any evidence that this diffuse anti-industrial sentiment led to government policies or economic decisions'. This is simply wrong. Chapter 6 (Images and Politics) provides a very real example of how the elites' disdain for industrial reform/innovation led to unfortunate legislative consequences: Joseph Chamberlain (Colonial Secretary of the Conservative Party) failed to pass much-needed tariff reform legislation (part of a sweeping economic program to re-energize England's fledgling industrial economy) because of ingrained political resistance to 'strenuous' economic resurgence. Further in the same chapter, Wiener points to policies for rural preservation and revivalism made by Conservatives in power. Such policies and, more importantly, deep-seeded mentalities hindered England's economic modernization as other industrial nations around her moved forward.
Wiener does a great job illustrating how romantic notions of pastoral 'purity' have very real economic consequences when political leaders espouse to such views to the detriment of modernization. England's ultimate failure to fully embrace industrialism allowed other industrial nations (ie Germany, U.S., France), with no such qualms, to move forward to the top of the heap.
Good cultural history, but it falls short of its goals.......2001-04-20
In this book, Martin J. Wiener attempts to explain Britain's general postwar economic decline by a pointing to a decline in the "industrial spirit" of English culture. This decline, he suggests, began in the nineteenth century, not long after the industrial revolution itself was in full swing. By examining literature, art, poetry, political statments, philosophy, social habits, and other cultural documents (even song and music), Wiener seeks to outline the decline of this industrial spirit over a 130-year period and thereby explain Britain's economic decline.
In fact, what Wiener ends up tracing is not really a "decline in an industrial spirit", but rather the *growth of an anti-industrial spirit*. This is not quite the same thing. It's one thing to note that many people in England were (and still are) critical of the ugliness, exploitativeness, and money-mindedness of modern industrial capitalism-- and that many of them came to feel a strong nostalgia for Old England, with it's rural, pre-industrial way of life. It's quite another to show that people actually became less interested in investing in industrial enterprises, in building factories, etc. To Wiener's credit, he does show that this anti-industrial spirit was *not* limited to working-class movements or romantic poets, but that it was actually shared by some bourgeois industrialists themselves-- at least to a certain degree. (I'm not 100% convinced, though, that the millionaire factory-owner who lives in a country estate to be away from the ugliness of the industrial cities, and who lets others direct the 'grubby' details of business management and financial investment can trulybe said to have embraced an 'anti-industrial spirit'). However, Weiner fails to show that any of this led to an actual decline in enthusiasm for-- or actual investment in-- industrial enterprises. Nor does he provide any evidence that this diffuse anti-industrial sentiment led to government policies or economic decisions by anyone that would stifled economic growth and led to an economic decline (which was, of course, the whole point of the book).
When all's said and done, Wiener doesn't provide a compelling explanation of Britain's economic decline. I'm convinced that this anti-industrial sentiment is very real in England, and I'm willing to believe it could be a factor in explaining Britain's postwar decline-- but I just don't think Wiener makes the case here. That said, he does provide an excellent account of the growth of anti-industrial sentiment in English culture, and as such, this book is well worth reading as a work of pure cultural history.

Book Description
This book examines the decline of the once great British shipbuilding industry in the twentieth century. Drawing on recent developments in behavioral economics and industrial sociology, the author argues that the decline can be explained by British management's uncertainty over the need for
reform of management methods following the Second World War, and the lack of trust between labor and management.

Book Description
Reading Ads Socially argues that advertisements are an ideal site for observing how the logic of the commodity form expresses itself culturally and socially. The aim is to produce a study of visual ideology which will move students to consider the deep ideological structure of ads. The fixation on whether ads are deceptive or subliminal diverts us from the real material and ideological impact of ads in modern society. The material impact of ads lies in producing and reproducing a currency of sign values that can be joined to commodities. Ideologically, the number of ads that we process numbs us into an acceptance of the social logic imposed by the framework of the commodity form. It is here that mystification takes place and here that we are encouraged to embrace reified social logic as if it were natural.
Robert Goldman examines how advertisements frame meanings, and how these frames help to organize the ways we see the world. By dissecting these frames, advertisements can be madeto locate the meaning of hegemony in relation to commodity culture. The book shows how ads modify meaning. It tracks the cultural contradictions of consumer advertising and examines ad campaigns which attempt to distance themselves from the rhetoric of the commodity self, pseudo-individuality, and commodity fetishism. Original, powerfully argued, and full of illuminating examples, this book will fast become a benchmark in the study of advertising culture.

Book Description
Driven by high tech foreign investment, the "Celtic Tiger" economy in the Republic of Ireland was one of the economic "success stories" of the 1990s. This book argues, however, that the state played a central role in developing the Celtic Tiger economy as well, and particularly, the increasingly important Irish high tech industry. Typically seen as an example of successful market-led globalization, high tech growth in Ireland has actually been promoted by a new form of state intervention in the economy--one that fosters local networks of support through decentralized state institutions drawing on extensive local, national and global resources.
Product Description
Ideas about social structure and social networks are very old. People have always believed that biological and social links among individuals are important. But it wasn't until the early 1930s that systematic research that explored the patterning of social ties linking individuals emerged. And it emerged, not once, but several times in several different social science fields and in several places. This book reviews these developments and explores the social processes that wove all these "schools" of network analysis together into a single coherent approach.

Sociological Imagination.......2005-02-10
Freeman's book, The Development of Social Network Analysis, brings hope for sociology. Much of sociological thought in recent years defies empirical verifications and mires in political correctness. Freeman shows what the mainstream intellectual discipline could be in sociology. For sociologists who consider their field a science, "the study of social structure has come of age." It is time to bring network concepts into the classroom starting with the introductory courses. Freeman deserves the highest accolades for bringing the imagination and credibility to sociological inquiry.

The Social Network of Social Network Analysts.......2004-10-10
The first impression after completing the book is that it is thorough in content, rich in detail, and well organized for summarizing the growth of the intellectual tradition that leads to today's elaboration of social network analysis.
Freeman develops an analytical model that he uses to analyze contributions from Compt (structuralist) to Wellman (unification) to the development of social network analysis. The four components of this model are:
"1. Social network analysis is motivated by a structural intuition based on ties linking social actors,
2. It is grounded in systematic empirical data,
3. It draws heavily on graphic imagery, and
4. It relies on the use of mathematical and/or computational models" (p. 3).
He finds that early structuralists contributed mostly at intuitive, empirical levels of analysis, leaving graphic representation and mathematical treatment to later generations. These early structuralists included Compt, Tönnies, Durkheim, Spencer, Cooley, LeBon, and Simmel. More systematic early contributions were made by Morgan, Macfarlane, Hobson, Calton, and Watson.
Freeman continues with the rise and decline of two schools of thought spearheaded in the 1930's by Moreno and lead by W. Lloyd Warner at Harvard. These schools began to contribute at the more formal graphic levels of analysis. After this period of awareness, in the Dark Ages (the '40s, '50s and '60s), twelve nearly independent schools of thought reemerged, blossomed for a time and then withered. They emerged both in parallel and in sequence. It was the Renaissance at Harvard led by Harrison C. White and his students who contributed to the diffusion of social network analysis by their academic moves and associations.
Freeman follows this trail meticulously through associations, academic meetings, creation of an organization, and a journal. This trail leads to the modern integration of social network analysis.
"There seemed to nave been eight ways in which various individuals and institutions acted as integrators: (1) Some moved from place to place and in so doing, bridged diverse collections of social network scholars. (2) Some produced computer programs that standardized the analysis of social network data. (3) Some organized conferences designed explicitly to bring previously separate groups together. (4) One created an organization designed explicitly to link social network researchers worldwide. (5) One started a journal aimed at centering the literature in the field. (6) One arranged to use an early kind of internet to connect people doing social network research. (7) Working together, some established a series of regular annual meetings. (8) And finally, UCI, the University of California at Irvine, played a special role in unifying the social network community" (P. 136).
Noteworthy is Barry Wellman whose energy brought about this integration. He organized INSNA, The International Network for Social Network Analysis, active since 1981; begun publishing its newsletter, CONNECTIONS; and in association with Freeman, the first editor, began publishing the Social Networks: An International Journal of Structural Analysis on August 1978.
Freeman further organizes this vast volume of material in the development of this tradition into a multidimensional social network both crossectional to a particular decade and longitudinal over the duration of 170 years. He follows the links of who associated with whom, who taught whom, who moved where, who cited whom, who met whom at professional meetings, and who were the independent inventors. This small book is large in scope. It provides a rich source of names, publications, and institutions for anyone interested in becoming knowledgeable in the diffusion and evolution of social network analysis.

Strong Internal Support Manager's Guide.......2003-03-18
Bruton provides a particularly incisive look at the management and marketing of internal support. This book is especially worth while reading for help desk managers. Bruton's British English and college vocabulary (the words obfuscation, ubiquitous, and emasulated all appear on page 51) are a minor stumbling block, but the content makes it well worth the effort.
* How to see the help desk as a purely business/financial entity. Bruton is masterful at expressing business concepts and realities to the help desk manager with a distinctly technical background. I don't find myself agreeing with him at every turn, as he tends to exaggarate and use cynicism to make points. Nonetheless, he brings up many ideas that bear consideration.
* The common structures for internal support are analyzed for strengths and weaknesses.
* Understanding and managing reactivity and proactivity in user support.
* Managing the work including work queue, work flow, delegation and escalation.
* Measuring and reporting. Bruton covers what is important and why.
Somewhat out of date now.
