3 out of 5 stars Not very helpful.......2005-03-24

Does not deserve a high rating. The content is pale and weak. Most of the suggestion the author gives are really plain rules of thumb. For example, the book suggests the use of Pareto analysis. The topic is done in around 100 words.

Not a book for people who search for a serious discussion of planning skill.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-04-24

All books that promise to teach you how to manage your time and your tasks more efficiently must be judged by one simple measure: Do they offer techniques that you actually can implement into your life? In the case of Powerful Planning Skills, the answer is an unqualified yes. Although the slim book at first looks simplistic, don't be deceived. Peter Capezio has written a nuts-and-bolts guide that essentially is a straightforward, interactive workbook. The text zeros in on strategic and personal planning styles, while also offering information to help you understand why your past efforts to become the world's best planner might have gone astray. Like most books on time management, this one includes much that you've heard before, but if you're looking to walk away with few new planning tricks, we [...] recommend this book to you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidance in a concise format!.......2000-04-09

I was just placed in charge of a large project and I was looking for a book that would give me some level of comfort that I was on the right track in planning what needs to be done. This book delivered exactly what I needed.

The book addresses different types of planning -- such as strategic, tactical, personal, etc., and steps you through the basics of developing a sound plan -- from defining your purpose or your goal to setting objectives, on through implementing your plan.

The book not only tells you what you need to do, but it tells you how you need to do it. It does this by providing a list of questions you should ask yourself about your project as you move from one phase of planning through to the end. There's also a case study that you follow from beginning to end to make sure you understand the concepts and the impact good planning has on achieving your goals.

You're given the information you need without having to wade through hundreds of pages of boring text to find it. Everything you need to know is provided in an easy to read concise format.

I highly recommend this book if you want to make sure you're developing a thorough plan that will lead you to success.

      Book Description

Manufacturers have been struggling for years with the necessity to produce high quality products that do not fail once they have been delivered to the customer. Auditing for stated reliability expectations can create a good product - but exceeding these standards will create a superior product. HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Test), HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screen), and HASA (Highly Accelerated Stress Audit) are intensive methods used by the world's top manufacturers to expose products to extreme environmental conditions, improve design and process weaknesses, and improve product quality - all before the product is introduced to the market. HALT, HASS & HASA Explained was written to aid organizations in this quest to implement these methods and produce highly reliable products without getting bogged-down in equations.

Written by a renowned teacher and practitioner of these techniques, this resource book is all that is required to implement a successful accelerated reliability program for your organization. Use it to help your company dramatically reduce failure rates in the field, assure a mature product at introduction, add to profitability, and greatly increase customer satisfaction.

HALT, HASS & HASA Explained is the perfect resource for developing an accelerated reliability program for your company. With an actual example of a company that transitioned from a traditional reliability program to a HALT and HASA program, the author guides you through instituting and equipping the proper accelerated reliability program for your company's products to selling these concepts to top management.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on the subject.......2001-12-08

Being new to the subject and the first book I've read on HALT testing, I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know what HALT, HASS and HASA testing is all about, how they relate to one another and the advantages of having these tests done on a product. This book isn't going to hold your hand and help you set up a HALT testing program. The book will explain what types of equipment are involved and gives suggestions as to how to perform these types of tests and who should be involved. I've seen one other book on the subject and it's thicker and more theoretical with many formulas and such. It's a big turn off and very dry reading. This book is completely the opposite. Very practical knowledge explained in easy to understand language, as if a co-worker who's an expert on the subject is explaining the whole process to you.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject so far.......2001-05-10

In this book Harry goes into hands on detail and doesn't just reiterate the theory. His explanations are complete and his guidelines are short and easy to follow. I especially found interest in his use of sigma values to determine the levels of energy a product MUST be able to endure, this gives us an educated guess into when you should fix a weekness without question and when you should take into acount cost and technology factors.

Purchasing this book is easier then compiling a library of published papers on the subject. It is worth the purchase price if you are working in the industry.

          Book Description

Managing in the New Team Environment is essential reading for all managers in contemporary business organizations who are attempting to work productively in today's challenging economic environment. As the organizational model based on hierarchy and conformity has increasingly revealed its inability to meet competitive challenges, a new team environment has evolved. Larry Hirschhorn's Managing in the New Team Environment presents an overview of the skills and techniques required to manage successfully in this new environment and focuses in particular on the ways in which the manager's role should change in response to changes in the nature of the team.

The book, which includes extensive case studies, is designed to help managers understand the social and psychological realities that shape their choices and behaviors. The manager in the new team environment is at once a member of the team and the leader of the team. Hirschhorn presents guidelines to help the manager adapt to this dual role, to become a "learner" as well as a "controller," and thereby ensure that the team functions at optimal effectiveness. Divided into five chapters and a summary, the book introduces the manager to the nature of the new team.

            Book Description

Over the last several decades, improvements in software development tools and methods have allowed geographically and culturally diverse groups to come together in global software development teams. Team members bring diverse expectations and goals that make the task of virtual product development considerably more complex than the most complex in-house projects.

Global Software Development covers the delicate tasks of managing diverse cultural expectations, establishing responsibility, implementing accountability, and defining process and product ownership. Subtle changes in the cost, schedule, and quality issues involved in normal product delivery are also examined. Although focused on global development projects, the book discusses issues that apply to most distributed software development environments.

Following the life cycle of a typical software development project, the text examines the growing need for global software development and the foundations of its strategy. From setting up the initial environment and project team, the book progresses through every development stage emphasizing the differences between traditional and virtual management. The final chapter presents three case studies illustrating the principles and activities described in the preceding chapters.

Dale Karolak's goal is to make it easier for managers to understand what to consider when managing a virtual project and offers a broad spectrum of information that enhances the reader's understanding of global software development.

                    Description:
Creative performance in R&D is of vital importance to organizations. Because R&D usually is organized in teams, the management of creative performance inherently refers to the team level creative performance. Over the last decades, R&D teams have become increasingly virtual. In this article we argued that the level of a team's 'virtuality' can be described by three factors: the proximity of team members, the communication modes used, and the manner in which the team task is coordinated. An exploratory empirical study in 44 R&D teams reveals that the creative performance is affected by each of these factors. The results of the study indicate that the more variable R&D teams are in the manner in which they employ these three factors, the higher is their creative performance. Virtuality of R&D teams is neither generally positive or negative for their creative performance: the creative outcome is a function of how virtuality in these teams is managed.

                        Book Description

Designed to be a practical guide for managers, this book gives the reader a comprehensive overview of the practice, culture, and methods for functioning in a team environment. Most managers are accustomed to the premise that they are to plan, organize, lead, and control. They are now being asked to facilitate their people in teams that plan, organize, control, and often lead. To be prepared for the new workplace realities, managers will need to be familiar with a whole new set of methods for leadership. This book helps engender the necessary knowledge and skills to make the transition to leading teams. It also makes clear the distinction between hierarchical and team environments. Tools for team-centered planning, work control, meetings, and decision making are presented in detail. Ample examples, academic resources, and specific recommended actions are provided to help the manager understand, utilize, and thrive in the new workplace. Issues that will challenge front line supervisors who are becoming team leaders are addressed, and issues that will impact middle managers who discover that they now manage a collection of teams are also examined. This book is a unique combination of field research, academic studies, case study data, and practices from one of America's best companies.

                            Book Description

It is the contention of this book that industrialization in Britain (and elsewhere) occurred first and foremost within regions rather than in the nation as a whole and that attempts to understand the 'first industrial revolution' as a fundamentally important economic, social and political process are best undertaken with the regional perspective at centre stage. In Regions and Industries a team of distinguished historians contribute a series of interconnected essays illustrative of the richness and variety of fundamental change at regional level. Each essay is focused around a set of clearly articulated themes, concerning the relations between agriculture, population, resources, communications and cultures, and the changing national and international context within which regional economies functioned. The volume provides a comprehensive analysis of the existing theoretical and empirical literature, and emphasizes again the need to evaluate aggregate studies of 'national' variables in the light of contrasting regional experiences.

It's a business truism that knowledge is a company's best source of competitive advantage. And in our heavily touted Knowledge Age, why is knowledge management still thought of as an abstract concept, rather than an integral part of a company's strategies and processes?

Reaching for the Knowledge Edge shows executives and managers how to trigger strategic learning across an organization. Its seven breakthrough approaches include:

                                          * Action alignment--to gauge how well customers are being served
                                          * The do/contract decision--to forge smart alliances with outside partners
                                          * The 3C test for strategic balance--to identify critical gaps in competencies
                                          * The knowledge ignition process--to make "knowing" a living reality.

Packed with original models and case examples, Reaching for the Knowledge Edge helps a company stretch beyond the comfort zone of its known customers, capabilities, and competencies--to gain a strategic advantage over its competitors.

John Brown, CEO of BP Amoco stated that: "To generate extraordinary value for its shareholders, a company has to learn more than its competitors and apply that knowledge throughout its business faster and more widely than they do." Hatten and Rosenthal make a valiant effort to layout a framework for testing the level of organizational knowledge in a corporation. They discuss the impacts of not having the necessary knowledge and establish a strategy for improving institutional learning.
However, it is not clear to me whether this is indeed a book on knowledge management or rather one on business systems. While it addresses the ephemeral and doughy subject of organizational knowledge it does so in a very mechanistic fashion using best practice techniques out of Business Process Analysis and Performance Metrics. It links these together in a consistent methodology for improving the long-term performance of the modern enterprise. But only in passing does it refer to other factors required for success, such as compensation systems, and it does so in one sentence without painting the full picture of needs. Hatten and Rosenthal outline a model using the 3Cs (Customer Relationships, Process Capabilities and Organizational Competencies) to assess the effectiveness of the enterprise. After describing how to assess the level of each dimension, how to identify gaps, and how to overcome those gaps, they go on to discuss how to use the model to assess future ventures being considered by the business. They consider the "stretch" that needs to take place in each dimension and whether the existing organization can handle the stretch by itself, or whether new capabilities and competencies need to be acquired through capital programs, recruiting or new partnerships.
The book then goes on to discuss the use of corporate experimentation and performance metrics to expand the corporation's knowledge. Finally, "Reaching for the Knowledge Edge", ends by discussing how individuals and corporations can move towards institutionalizing the learning process and becoming "knowing" organizations.
Throughout, Hatten and Rosenthal illustrate their points with real life examples from corporations that include HP, IBM and Laura Ashley. They also provide an abundance of diagrams, tables and lists of questions to clarify the text and provide a resource to the practitioner. Unfortunately their style lacked flow, and at times the text was hard to follow, particularly when discussing stretching the 3Cs.
In spite of neither providing a major breakthrough in thinking nor covering the whole space adequately, "Reaching for the Knowledge Edge" provides a valuable update to existing practice. A book that should definitely be included in the practitioner's library!
