Practical look at why capacity building is difficult.......2004-04-01
Like many others, I assumed that building nonprofit capacity was a wise investment. Blumenthal describes how easily capacity building efforts can go awry, using both research and examples from real programs. She goes on to describe a number of interesting capacity building programs that avoid some of the pitfalls. While the problems described are very common, this is the first analysis I have found that offers alternatives.
This book offers important insights for foundations interested in funding capacity building work, consultants who work with nonprofits and nonprofit executive directors and trustees.

Customer Reviews:
Some good summary information.......2001-10-21
The book covers most facets of modern day manufacturing, from change to cost containment, maintenance strategy, and human capital. A significant portion delves into the impact of the "new economy" and in particular how B2B, B2C, and "B2B2B2B2C" influence manufacturing operations. Of particular note are the "12 requirements of success for the future capable company," a discussion of the synthesis between lean, agile, and cellular manufacturing, the value of simplicity, the "25 requirements for effective maintenance leadership," and analysis of Gallup's "Q12" method for retaining human capital.

Book Description
The place of money capital in the theory of the firm has remained a relatively neglected question in traditions of economic analysis. In this highly integrative work, issues in production, pricing, capital investment and financial theory are brought to new levels of interdependence. Developing a three-part argument, Money Capital in the Theory of the Firm deals successively with the theoretical issues and analytic motivation, the neoclassical tradition and postclassical perspectives. In doing so, it presents a self-contained foundation in the basic structures of microeconomic analysis relating to optimize decision making in the firm and in the accounting concepts and statistical apparatus of probability theory relevant to the neoclassical aspects of the argument. Additionally, the book provides the essential mathematical development of such advanced topics as utility functions defined over stochastic arguments, the equilibrium theory of financial asset prices and yields, the cost of money capital, and investment decision criteria. This book makes an important contribution to the formation of new and analytically richer perspectives in the important area of economics it addresses. It will be of particular interest to those working in economic theory and microeconomics, and their advanced students.
Customer Reviews:
Vickers,like Shackle,has his own definition of uncertainty.......2004-11-13
Vickers' definition of uncertainty, used over 120 times in this book,is the same as the definition given by G L S Shackle repeatedly for over 50 years. It goes something like this.Anyone who claims that they have any knowledge of probabilities that they intend to apply to unknown future outcomes can't be talking about uncertainty. This is because knowledge(certainty)is the polar opposite of uncertainty(un knowledge or no knowledge). This definition is problematic and ambiguous.Individuals who find such a definition applicable will be well served by reading this book. The main criticism that I have occurs when the author implies that J M Keynes had the same definition of uncertainty as the definition given above. In fact,Keynes's definition is much broader than Shackle's and includes the Shackle definition as a special case that is not generally applicable in the real world. For Keynes, uncertainty is a range which extends from the Shackle case of complete or total uncertainty(what Keynes called the case of ignorance)through intermediate cases of partial uncertainty ,where the probability estimates or set of possible probability distributions or the size of the probability interval is regarded as being more or less reliable ,to the case of complete or total information ,where one unique probability distribution would be defined.Keynes's definition of risk requires this last case, where the weight of the evidence,w,would be equal to 1.Keynes would assign the Shackle case a w equal to 0.INTERMEDIATE DEGREES OF WEIGHT REFLECT INTERMEDIATE DEGREES OF UNCERTAINTY.Only in the case of investment in long lived capital goods subject to being made obsolete by future technological innovation and change do the approaches of Keynes and Shackle-Vickers merge. Here, the ignorance of the future can lead to extremely high liquidity preferences on the part of manufacturers and hence increases in the amount of involuntary unemployment. While this case is very important,it can't sustain the generality of application claimed for it by Shackle-Vickers (to extend to decision making in general).

Customer Reviews:
Paying it forward . . ........2005-11-30
I had the honor of working with Ole Carlson at a recent workshop. At first I didn't really connect Carlson with the book I had just finished reading prior to the workshop. About an hour into the meeting I realized that the speaker was advocating some of the very principles from the book that I had so heavily marked up and reread several times.
What a delight! And what hard work - Carlson walks the talk, and he definitely put us through our paces. And this book will do the same for those who take the time to read it. Beneath the Armor is filled with straight forward talk about the leaders at the top of Business. At the end of each chapter is a review and a list of actions to take based on the information we just read. It is a practical, put it to work book for CEOs.
Chapter titles give us an idea of the clarity this book will bring to the serious leader: 1. Be Authentic - it is easier to Remember; 2. Take Care of Yourself First - then others; 3. Lead the Organization - Let Other Manage it; 4. Value Resiliency over Brilliancy; 5. It is All About the People; 6. Understanding Your Numbers is Not Optional; and 7. Have a Well-Lubricated Reverse Gear. Written in deceptively easy and conversational style, each chapter turns out to be chock full of solid strategy and finishes with a call to action. Reading this book did in fact change the direction of my consultancy.
More importantly, this book in conjunction with spending four days in a workshop with Ole Carlson changed my life - for the better. This is a must read for leaders and those who coach and/or consult with business leaders. To quote Mr. Carlson, "The message in this book comes from you and your peers and I am simply paying it forward."
Beneath the Armor.......2005-06-26
This is a great book, and it is a must read for all CEO's of small to mid-size companies. The author is at home with the subject, and the reader will feel as though Ole is writng directly to you. His message is simple, but the simplicity is its magic. This book made me laugh, think more deeply about my role, and shed tears of joys and struggles as I reflected upon my own journey.
I will read this book annually to keep myself fresh and to remember my role as a CEO.
Practical Leadership Lessons.......2004-07-14
Ole's book really underscored, for me, the primary lessons of leadership. I especially appreciated his writing style and approach that actually made these seven strategies seem do-able for once. The stories about how these played out in real life companies has the recommendations really hit home. I plan to give Ole's book as a gift to my clients and busines associates. I feel certain this will be one book gift they will actually read and put into action!
Practicle ahds on advise.......2004-07-11
A very credible and practicle book which is fortunately based on real experience with multiple CEOs of medium size companies throughout the world. I learned a great deal, enjoyed reading it and bought several copies as gifts for my friends.
Very much recommend it!
'Armor' Makes Running A Business Visible.......2004-07-06
Ole Carlson's `Beneath The Armor' makes running a business visible. Finished reading the book about 5 weeks ago- started putting to work the sage perspective, real world experience and relevant challenges for life, leadership and making a difference. Seems to me this is an owner or CEO handbook for the new and tenured- however it readily applies to any person seeking to become more effective in life, business, in the role of leading. Make sure each of your key reports reads a copy and start transforming your organization by putting the key points that resonant to work in your culutre and behavior. Each of the seven chapters clearly presents the focus, the key points, supports with 'believable examples and stories', and concludes with a key point summary and specific steps to put the points to work. `Armor' is like having seven 1 to 1's with a skilled, experienced mentor. Read it to learn, to remember, to set the bar higher, to refresh, to put into action. Clearly written- like having a conversation that really matters.
Book Description
"This searing confessional reads like a novel and is just as suspenseful... Any female athlete would be interested in this story." -- Library Journal Lisa Whitsett grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she began the first of 27 years dedicated to sports and athletics. Her experiences as a mental health counselor and her adventures as a business consultant motivated her to write about development, change and transformation. Beneath the Armor of an Athlete was inspired by her own experiences of personal growth as well as her clients'. While many sports books contribute to a reader's athletic development, this book also focuses on the private, personal development of the athlete. Beneath the Armor of an Athlete is the story of a female Olympic Freestyle wrestler. Her love for the sport and striving for success expose her to rare challenges, all of which introduce new experiences in her life. From all-male wrestling camps and tournaments to the competitive ranks of national and international women's freestyle wrestling, this athlete learns that her sport is the gateway to learning more about who she really is and what she is capable of becoming.
Customer Reviews:
Finding a Balance.......2005-01-04
Beneath the Armor of an Athlete was a very enjoyable, quick read. Please don't be misled by the word "quick," though; some readers associate that with fluffiness of content. This book's content is anything but. In fact, it occurred to me that this book might be useful in school curricula in the areas of sociology, psychology, and even writing adaptation. Its significant social issues and the author's cinematic style of storytelling make it a good candidate for many academic outlets.
A friendly word of warning: some of the lessons divulged and issues raised might make you angry. They did me! I threw the book across the room a few times. Isn't it funny how easy it is to see what we would change in others, and how difficult it is to change things in ourselves, even when we want to?
And that's part of the beauty of this book: the themes running throughout it are universal and timeless. For example, the fear of "not being good enough" and how that fear can become a pattern of behavior causing us to forget who we really are and how we want to be takes on a character all its own in this book.
The search for peace and for what makes each of us truly happy is a path each person must experience for her-/himself. The author seems well on her way to discovering her own peace through this effort. I enjoyed Beneath the Armor of an Athlete and plan to read it again in a few years just to see how timeless it really is.

Not (necessarily) about wrestling.......2004-04-23
I am not a wrestling fan - in fact, I know nothing about the sport. Never-the-less, I found Lisa Whitsett's book amusing, well written and entertaining. Within a few pages I was drawn into her easy to read narrative, and was impressed by the honesty and emotional intensity with which she tells her story.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an enjoyable and easy way to fill their time - whether they are a fan of wrestling or not.
A Great education for any parent of a Wrestler!.......2003-05-30
As the parent of a very competitive 1st grade boy, I am so glad that I read this book. Being new to the sport, it really gave me insight into wrestling and the many potential ways that it can experienced by the wrestler. I recommend this book for any Mom or Dad with a child in the sport. Reading this will surely make me a better "Wrestling Mom". Once you start reading, you won't want to put this book down...so, find a comfortable chair!
An excellent book.......2003-05-28
Hi, I am Marc Anderson and I have enjoyed the development of women's amateur wrestling for years now. I have recently read the book BENEATH THE ARMOR OF AN ATHLETE Real Strength on the Wrestling Mat by Lisa Whitsett. Lisa is an accomplished amateur wrestler and has made her mark on the sport. Her book details her life in the sport she loves and it shows that she fears no one except herself and the possibility of failure. It shows how she battles her inner demons to become the best wrestler she can be and is an honest and frank appraisal of her efforts. I highly recommend this book to any young person who is interested in becoming a wrestler, especially females. It is my hope that Ms. Whitsett will write a second book about her life in the sport that will bring the reader up to date on her current efforts to advance women's amateur wrestling.
The many faces of "Courage".......2003-05-22
All too often we hope to catch a glimpse of something worth our attention, and this is definitely one of those times.
This original and revealing book certainly packs an astounding punch, especially in the descriptive style for which the author takes.
In allowing us into HER mind (and the unique world of many amateur wrestlers), Lisa Whitsett transforms herself into an "educator extrodinaire", by ultimately giving us a first hand lesson on what it's like to face ourselves, and the inner demons that forever attempt to cripple us from within.
Tremendous introspective to the very "soul" of a grappler!

Such a collection of international experiences and expertise offers policymakers, legislators, researchers, and to professionals insight into addressing the significant issues that are importance to the small business sector and ultimately will lead to the depiction of a more effective regulatory frameworks that will lead to the long-term success of EC in SMEs in countries around the world.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Moh'd Radaideh's Testimonial Statement.......2004-04-21
The book is an excellent resource of E-Business and E-Government literature. Valuable lessons can be learned from the book as it elaborates on E-Commerce initiatives and policy implications in several countries and other topics.
I like the way the book is organized and find it easy to read through. The book has been organized into three sections: E-Commerce initiatives and policy implications, policy implication for networked SMEs in Supply Chain, and policy push and monitoring.
Several chapters in the book elaborate on topics related to my current research projects. Reading through these chapters will be very helpful in this regard.
Al-Qirim - E Commerce in SMEs.......2003-12-17
This is a remarkably international text in an age dominated by Western views of eCommerce, presenting an astonishing array of national and cultural perspectives on eCommerce in SMEs.
It provides an excellent introduction to the topic for students and researchers alike.
It should also be of significant value to eCommerce practitioners who seek to learn more about eCommerce opportunities.
Challenge your understanding.......2003-12-14
This book will challenge your understanding of the role and value of e-commerce for small and medium-sized business as it generates as many new questions as it answers. I recommend this book as essential reading for anyone who really wants to learn how to help SMEs innovate with e-commerce, but without the hype!
new research on e-commerce in small firms.......2003-11-05
Professors who offer a postgraduate research course with a focus on e.commerce and SMEs should consider using this book. Like the Burgess book "Managing Information Technology in Small Business" (Stephen Burgess, IDEA, 2002) this is another must read for someone new to IS research in SMEs. The two books complement each other as this book focuses on e.commerce, while the Burgess book covered a broader range of research topics, although about half of it was devoted to e.commerce.
