Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource!.......2001-12-06
When I decided to quit my job and go travel the world, a friend suggested I buy this book. I did just that and after I got my EFL teaching certificate (with a school listed in this book) I landed a job in Taiwan using the contacts in the "CELT Guide". Many of my colleagues found their jobs using this book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have the adventure of a lifetime -- and get paid for it!!
Best resource for wannabe ESL teachers.......2001-12-04
Okay, there are some good books on the market for people who want to travel the world and teach English as a second language. Susan Griffiths' book has some great anecdotes but it's for Brits. Jeff Mohamed's book has some good points but there's not enough contact information. Nope, my advice is to save your $$$ and buy this book. "CELT" is the most comprehensive title in this area. There's detailed information on teaching in more than 130 countries around the world and the lists of employers are endless. Even more, there's a great section on coming back to the States and finding a job here. This book is well worth the extra wait in ordering it.
Good but not great.......2001-11-30
I read the book and thought it was generally okay but not really great. It seems like a combination of the British 'ELT Guide' and Susan Griffith's 'Teaching English Abroad.' So it has a lot of information about visas and other legal issue and a lot of anecdotes. These might help new teachers to decide which countries to consider teaching in.
Where the guide falls down is in not giving enough specific advice on how to find and secure jobs. For practical advice on job searching and on things like how to choose a training course, I think Jeff Mohamed's 'Teaching English Overseas' wins hands down.
But the CELT guide is definitely worth looking at.
Packed with tips and considerations.......2001-08-16
Those who want to teach English and travel will find Careers In English Language Teaching to be a 'must' guide which covers everything on how to obtain such a job. From training requirements and choosing a program to applying teaching in the field both domestically and overseas, the American Language Press Careers In English Language Teaching is packed with tips and considerations.
Brilliant contribution.......2001-06-15
I have to say that the CELT guide has been the answer to my prayers. I have been wanting to teach English overseas for so long but did not have the information to aid my job search... until this guide came along. I intend to go to Thailand and thanks to the CELT guide I have been able to contact the schools there, and I now understand the visa hurdles I have to jump over. I believe that the CELT guide has been put together really well, is concise, and acts as a great point of departure for all of us wanting to teach away from home. Great job Mr Ward!

Book Description
Building on a clear presentation of the psychological factors that determine whether individuals embrace or resist change, this far-reaching work describes how to identify the source, intensity, and focus of a person's resistance to change in organizations and provides the tools for overcoming individual resistance and increasing team effectiveness.
Customer Reviews:
Making Change Irresistible by Ken Hultman.......2001-10-29
There are a lot of books on change. It takes a lot for a book about change to stand out from the growing crowd of books on this increasingly important topic. Making Change Irresistible by Ken Hultman stands tall. The book starts right off by focusing on the primary reason why leaders have difficulty in making change happen in organizations-the failure to really understand human beings. He says that leaders who have crunched the numbers, laid out meticulous plans, and positioned organizational resources are often surprised by resistance and tend to see something malevolent or irrational in the resistance, rather than a natural human response that can be addressed in ways that do make change irresistible. My favorite chapter is the one on the practical ways of building trust-a pivotal topic that seems to be left out of most of the other books on change. I also appreciated the liberal sprinkling of self-assessment inventories and checklists because they made the book so specific and practical.
A first class behavioural guide to change management.......1999-12-08
"This book is intended to serve as a strategic and tactical manual for battling resistance to organizational change." Covers the key concepts in understanding human behaviour and change and provides tools for diagnosing and overcoming resistance. First class. It uses a simple but powerful framework and offers several useful 'instruments' to diagnose core issues in gaining acceptance of change. The book is intended for anyone whose job it is to lead others through change. It is a useful, clear and well-organised resource and the instruments contained in it are also clear and well explained.
Excellent.......1999-12-04
"Making Change Irresistible" is an engaging book with proactive tools and effective strategies that can help executives and managers alike through the murky waters of organizational transition. This book is the most comprehensive work available on the subject of organizational resistance to change. It led me to discover and rethink my assumptions about corporate change resistance. It presents a fresh perspective on a topic of concern to all of today's organizations, and is applicable to both academicians and practitioners. The Change Opinion Survey and The Psychological Need Fulfillment Inventory provide practical methods of preventing, diagnosing, and minimizing the impact of resistance to change in organizations. Both tools are essential for anyone in the process of managing change. Through an in-depth analysis of human behaviour and with techniques that promote personal growth, this book enables readers to become adept at diagnosing resistance to change. The book also helps readers to develop a more positive attitude toward change, while building a concrete plan of action to overcome resistance to change. In short, "Making Change Irresistible" is a must-read for those who study change, and for anyone whose job it is to lead others through the challenge of organizational change.
Must reading for persons or organizations undergoing change.......1999-10-29
Ken Hultman has written a brilliant and very practical book on dealing with change. His work on motivation updates Maslow and concentrates on ones sense of worth. The change tests and exercises can be used directly and will assist any organization undergoing change. The work on values is also brilliant and gets to the heart of the matter instead of working around the edges.
This book explains in simple language why and how people get their needs met and how that affects change processes. This book is must reading for any organization that truly wants to change and needs to understand the process.
Best book I have seen on how employees can change.......1999-10-18
Ken's background includes: PhD in Counseling Psychology; staff and line manager; university professor; counselor for individuals, families and groups; and trainer and organizational development consultant to 100 Fortune 500 companies, including major effort with General Electric.
He provides the best analysis of the reasons change is so hard (for most humans), and a fairly good prescription of what can be done to "make change irresistible". The following are a few of the concepts from his book:
Unmet Needs table spans pages 24-27 Unmet Need for Mastery Unmet Need for a Sense of Meaning and Purpose Unmet Need for Acceptance Unmet Need for Respect Each unmet need is followed by 10-20 Symptoms, Consequence, and Potential Solutions
His unmet needs survey encourages a quick assessment of the group and individual attitudes toward change. 60 Statements are assigned a 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0: 4 = strongly disagree down to 0 = Strongly agree People in my organization: Expect too little from themselves Malign each other's character Judge each other on the basis of personal characteristics Disagree about goals/methods Lack opportunities to use their skills Withhold information from each other Discriminate against others Disagree with each other about priorities Lack the necessary knowledge or understanding Try to make each other look bad Subtly make others feel excluded Etc.
He states that there are 4 combinations of Willingness and Ability to Change (pg 97) 1 - Both willing and able to change = best 2 - Able but unwilling to change 3- Willing but unable to change 4 - Both unwilling and unable to change = worst
His strategies for overcoming resistance span pg 171-175 Establishing a positive climate Encourage and interest in improvement Show people how overcoming resistance to change can help them Help people increase their competence Involve people in decisions Cultivate value for teamwork Don't react emotionally Avoid inadvertent mistakes Concentrate on factors within your control
The explanation of his strategies span pages 181-4 15 Strategies aimed at Thinking 10 Strategies aimed at Feelings 12 Strategies aimed at Deciding 10 Strategies aimed at Doing
He has 5-10 strategies for each way of Overcoming the Common Causes of Resistance (pg 188) Which depend on the current their beliefs: They believe their needs are being met already They believe the change will make it harder for them to meet their needs They believe the costs outweigh the benefits They believe the change is unnecessary to avoid or escape a negative situation They believe the change process was handled improperly They believe the change will fail They believe the change is inconsistent with their values

Book Description
This book provides a step-by-step approach to successful negotiations. Many people view negotiations as a complex, daunting process, full of surprises. Based on more than 25 years of training negotiators in the U.S. and abroad, the authors say it doesn't have to be that way. The secret is to carefully structure the entire process. Negotiation: Six Steps to Success shows how to enter a negotiation well positioned to succeed, by analyzing the situation in advance, and building a plan that reflects reality. The authors then present clear guidelines for evolving a plan during the course of negotiation, so the negotiator stays in control and can successfully achieve the desired results. Case studies are used throughout the book, which offers a unique and needed counterpoint to the mythology and folklore that all too often surround the process of negotiation. Anyone who negotiates -- in either professional or personal contexts.

Insurgent Cuba: Race, Nation, and Revolution, 1868-1898
ASIN: 0807846929
Release Date: 1998-08-26 |
Book Description
Though Cuba was among the first countries in the world to utilize rail transport, the history of its railroads has been little studied. This English translation of the prize-winning Caminos para el azúcar traces the story of railroads in Cuba from their introduction in the nineteenth century through the 1959 Revolution.
More broadly, the book uses the development of the Cuban rail transport system to provide a fascinating perspective on Cuban history, particularly the story of its predominant agro-industry, sugar. While railroads facilitated the sugar industry's rapid growth after 1837, the authors argue, sugar interests determined where railroads would be built and who would benefit from them. Zanetti and Garc'a explore the implications of this symbiotic relationship for the technological development of the railroads, the economic evolution of Cuba, and the lives of the railroad workers.
As this work shows, the economic benefits that accompanied the rise of railroads in Europe and the United States were not repeated in Cuba. Sugar and Railroads provides a poignant demonstration of the fact that technological progress alone is far from sufficient for development.
Customer Reviews:
Should be read as one eats Fuji fish with due respect to the poison.......2007-03-06
Zanetti Lecuona, Oscar and Alejandro Garcia Alvarez 1998 Sugar & railroads: a Cuban history, 1837-1959. University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill and London, (translated by Franklin W, Knight and Mary Todd from Caminos para el azucar 1987 Editorial de Ciencias Sociales, Havana) ISBN-10 0807823856 ISBN-13 978-0807823859.
This is an interesting book with much useful information on Cuban railroads and Cuba in general. However, it should only be read as one eats Fuji fish with due respect to the poison. This work is a product of an official Cuban government press and thus infused with communist propaganda and factual distortion. For instance the discussion of Horatio S. Rubens completely omits reference to the work Rubens did for Cuban Independence as lawyer for the Mambi Independence fighters (see Liberty: The Story of Cuba (Hardcover) by Horatio S. Rubens ISBN-10 0404006337; ISBN-13: 978-0404006334). In this Zanetti and Garcia volume the section on Cuban president and then dictator Gerardo Machado (pp. 309-337 and others) much emphasis is given to labor conflict, and yet on p. 337 the tolerance of Machado for the Cuban Communist Party (Stalinist) is strikingly out of context, and the collaboration of this party with the increasingly dictatorial Machado is finessed e.g. p. 321 "With Varona murdered and the Hermandad handed over to traitorous yellow leaders, the railroad proletariat was helpless against the Machado dictatorship" (page numbers are taken from the hard cover edition). And then there is the almost comical ideology of the statement on page 306 "Since the victorious October (Soviet) Revolution had sown panic among the exploiters..." Still the book is useful to track down details of Cuban history such as the map on page 230 which emphasizes the importance of the (Victoria de las) Tunas station in the 1917 Chambelona War (e.g. The New York Times. March 8, 1917, Thursday p 1. "Pablo Menocal, brother of the President and commander of the militia forces in Oriente Province, telegraphed today that General (Calixto Garcia-Iñiguez) Enamorado, hearing that a band of rebels were burning the cars at Dominguez Station, attacked, killing eighteen, including their chief, Capitan José Pantoja."). Thus until, as a historian friend points out, the Cuban files are again open to general inspection one cannot expect objective histories from inside the island. Therefore when one seeks information on the highly developed Cuban railroad system, one must by present necessity refer with great caution to this very flawed book.

Book Description
The task of Knowledge Management (KM) is to capture explicit and tacit knowledge of an organization in order to facilitate the access, sharing, and reuse of that information. KM must be guided by a strategic vision to fulfill its primary organizational objectives: improving knowledge sharing and cooperative work inside the organization; disseminating best practices; improving relationships with the external world; preserving past knowledge of the company for reuse; improving the quality of projects and innovations; anticipating the evolution of the external environment; and preparing for unexpected events and managing urgency and crisis situations. One approach for KM is to build a corporate memory or organizational memory (OM), for which several techniques can be adopted. The choice of a solution depends on the type of organization, its needs and its culture, and must take into account the organization's people and technology.
Knowledge Management and Organizational Memories presents models, methods, and techniques for building, managing and using corporate memories. These models incorporate knowledge bases, ontologies, documents, FAQs, workflow systems, case-based reasoning systems, multi-agent systems, and CSCW. The book is divided into five parts: methods; knowledge-based approaches; ontologies and documents; case-based reasoning approaches; and distributed and collaborative approaches.

Description:
Collective memory has been characterized as a socially articulated and maintained reality of the past-one form being organizational memory. The collective memory concept can also be specialized to a group level and used to support work groups engaged in repetitive decision-making activities. The advantages of capturing collective memory are many, including simplification of the process, codification of decision strategies, carryover of knowledge when group composition changes, etc. While there has been substantial research in group decision-making, the explicit use of collective memory to support repetitive decision-making has received less attention. This paper describes the development and implementation of a collective memory based environment for support of a multi-attribute, iterative decision process. The environment utilized hypermedia, groupware, and Intranet technologies. Results of its use are encouraging.
