I flunked algebra in high school. Now I'm taking a 095 algebra class at a local collage and now I'm getting A's and B's. It's a great book and ours came packaged with lecture CDs. It maybe the best algebra text book but you still have to do practice problems over and over to get good grades they don't just happen because the book was so good.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect book to reintroduce algebra.......2004-04-07

I used this book in my first back-to-college algebra class, and it is a great book. Easy to understand explanations and step-by-step instructions made algebra way easier than I remembered! Please note: the companion solutions manual has many wrong answers. The book itself, however, is great. If your class is using this book, you will do well.

5 out of 5 stars best math text I have ever used.......1999-10-01

I wish he had written all of my text books. Everything is clearly laid out with examples that are broken down into small steps to make understanding even clearer.

5 out of 5 stars Not afraid of Algebra now !.......1999-01-22

I would really like to thank Mr. Angel for putting together a great book. I have to admit that I was afraid of Algebra until I started studying from this book.

              Thanks !

              5 out of 5 stars a good supplement.......1998-07-26

The book was laid out well and establishes a good flow with the reader. Contains helpful drawings and diagrams. This book is well suited for visual learners.

                          Book Description

Are sick companies destined to fail? Must thousands of workers continue to lose their jobs in downsizing and restructuring exercises? Principles of Corporate Renewal systematically examines these issues and describes a rational approach for dealing with financially distressed companies. It contains the first logical and orderly discussion of a number of modern business issues including outsourcing, turnaround management, layoffs, quality management, and reengineering. These subjects are carefully intertwined with information on important practices such as break-even analysis, failure prediction, and negotiations.
This is the first textbook in the field of corporate renewal especially prepared for students in graduate and undergraduate business programs as well as professional training seminars. Exercises provide students with the opportunity to try their hands at saving troubled companies and refreshing successful ones. Extensive real-world examples and an engaging writing style broaden its readership to include interested lay people, small business owners, bankers, and corporate managers. Other valuable features include a glossary of relevant terms and a comprehensive bibliography. Topics covered include:
the three levels of corporate renewal; cash flows and net incomes; an overview of bankruptcy laws; failure prediction; ethical and legal considerations in financial distress; turnaround analysis; employee downsizing; crafting a plan of re-organization; business process reengineering; Deming and the quality revolution; tax considerations; activity-based costing.
"This is the first publication in the field of insolvency that includes all facets of turnaround and corporate revitalization--from historical statistics and perspectives to failure prediction models. It is much than simply a 'how to' path but does devote sufficient time to turnaround analysis and recovery process. A must-read for everyone in the insolvency field from turnaround professionals to bankruptcy judges." -- Gerald P. Buccino, Ph.D., Buccino & Associates, Inc.

4 out of 5 stars Good Balance of Theory, Finance and practice.......2000-01-09

Dr. Platt in this book offers a balanced mix of academic and practical examples. This book is an excellant first read on many subjects in the turnaround field.

The book offers a good base of data to understand the statistics of companies trouble. It also offers for the academically oriented a wealth of references to explore individual subjects in more depth.

Some topics are so vast (Accounting, Bankruptcy Law, Financial Analysis) that several individual books are written on each subject. However this books hits the major hiighlights of the most important topics.

Dr Platt is also close to the industry and is a leader in the Association of Certified Turnaround Professionals and has personal relationships with many leaders in the industry. He has drawn on the experince to write a book that is also a very useful reference for the turnaround manager to use as a guide and refresher on engagements.

4 out of 5 stars Indispensable Addition to Turnaround Management Literature.......1999-06-14

Up to now the literature of turnaround management has consisted mainly of case studies and the personal experiences of practitioners. Some of the material is widely accepted as good. "Taking Charge" by John Whitney comes to mind. Some is a matter of personal taste. "Mean Business" by Al Dunlap is a recent example.

Harlan Platt has written what may be the first academic textbook for this little understood management genre. It is a considered analysis of the development of Corporate Renewal, which encompasses a set of management disciplines ranging from strategic change management, through problem solving techniques needed to turnaround a distressed company, to the triage of crisis management.

In Platt's book you won't find 'slash and burn" turnaround stories like those popularized in the mainstream media. Most turnaround managers will acknowledge that often layoffs and staff reductions are required in a turnaround, but only after very careful analysis of the distressed operation's remaining value proposition. And as Platt notes, insufficient attention is given to the number of jobs saved when a layoff is necessary.

The book opens with an interesting history of turnaround management research with helpful statistics on the main causes of corporate distress. Following is a comprehensive section on bankruptcy and failure prediction, which clearly plays to Platt's strength as a finance professor. I found the chapters on turnaround analysis and employee downsizing very helpful.

Platt also incorporates overviews of re-engineering, activity based accounting, quality and a very useful chapter on tax considerations in turnarounds.

The Principles of Corporate Renewal seems positioned as a text for the Certified Turnaround Professional exams administered by the Turnaround Management Association. And indeed, Platt has been instrumental in the curriculum development of the program. But the book is just as useful for those who are simply interested in learning more about the dynamic of turnaround management.

My only complaint is that I wish there was a bibliography, or better yet a bibliographic essay, on the current literature surrounding turnaround management. Yes, there is a reference section and the chapters are footnoted. However, it seems to me that at least two published turnaround accounts written by practitioners are missing. But perhaps I missed these in the footnotes.

Citing helpful examples, including those from the rich literature of the military, this book sounds a clear call for us to get on with the important work of building broadly based leadership that will enrich both business and individual lives."—Dr. Curt W. Reimann, former Director, Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Tis is an excellent book for explaining leadership principles, based on the ultimate test of leadership-combat.
The book compiles lists of leadership traits and practices from some of the leading military manuals and strategists to create a terrific reference source. It makes suggestions on how to create a self-evaluation list for measuring one's leadership skills, knowledge and abilities and how to improve them.
As a former Marine NCO, I still use the techniques and understanding from the Corps. THis book is an outstanding refresher course or it stands alone for everyone.

Patrick Townsend and Joan Gebhardt draw on all the available sources (big industry and the military) to create a book full of leadership skills that is in an easy-to-read format and very practical to use. If you are a leader or a follower, this book is a must read. I am a student of leadership (Navy Officer with 17 years experience) and I have never read a finer book. Get it, read it, and then read it again!

Too many people think that leaders can only be born, not trained and/or nurtured. It's a good thing that the US Marine Corps does not believe this. If they had not trained leaders, I would have grown up in New Tokyo, instead of Los Angeles.

Forget the stereotypes and take advantage of 2,000+ plus years experience of studying leadership and training leaders.

                                  Book Description

Activists and pressure groups can present a serious threat to organizations. An activist group intent on creating opposition can do untold damage to an organization`s reputation, sales, profits and share price. While this sort of action can be destructive, in many cases the motives of the activists are worthy. How can an organizer protect itself without creating a public relations nightmare? The author provides realistic solutions and covers important areas like:

                                  •The dynamics of pressure groups
                                  •Assigning responsibility

3 out of 5 stars There's Got To Be More Out There.......2003-09-01

While Managing Activism is a pretty good read from a professional standpoint, I have to admit that I was slightly disappointed that Denise Deegan's (sp?) book wasn't quite the how-to manual of dirty tricks used by corporations and their hired public relations people against activist groups. I think there must be some other books for that. While this book definitely had some clever approaches to dealing with activist pressure, it was a fairly professional approach to the problems that businesses can face from dealing with activist groups and the public. For the most part, her advice was simple: run an accountable and transparent business when dealing with the public, and even if you don't win friends with some activist groups for your practices, e.g. heavy industry or animal testing, you can actually win the PR battle sometimes. Unfortunately, since it seems we are living through a time of some of the greatest corporate hubris since the robber barons, it's not surprising that most companies don't feel the need to follow these suggestions.

I was most interested in the divide and conquer techniques she suggests for activist and pressure groups. By brokering a deal with the least radical of the opposition groups, a business interest can actually marginalize the most committed groups. A lot of this type of strategy was based on the cynical premise that many activist organizations, especially the larger ones, are as committed to fundraising and membership growth as they are to their organizing issues. Like most cynical opinions, this one has a kernel of truth to it. There are plenty of organizations out there who see the pool of support and money as a finite one, and they view every other organization out there as competition. That's why I think organizations with minimal hierarchy and an equally minimal interest in fundraising are the future of activism.

1 out of 5 stars How to forget your grassroots & go to corporate branches........2003-02-27

Yes, after such a read it comes even clearer that money changes everything. Grassroot activists, beware: you are the target here and this is a primer on baseline tactics to defeat nonprofit nature and life lovers.
The receipt is simple and twofolded:
                                  1. Bad guys are noisy and dirty, good boys cooperate and avoid nose piercing, so let's do business with the later as neatly as possible.
                                  2. Money changes everything and breaks any alliance, if allowed.

Polite manners always win, this author says.
But, unfortunately, Hager and Burton wrote the reality-shown book, depicting the greedy, unruled and creepy style (the real one)PR companies use to unfold to "manage" the citizens will.
Don't waste your time with Denise Deegan (a toxic GM cheeseburger), plainly read the Hager and Burton book (a much healtier tofu and sushi with garlic and raisins appetizer).
After 12 years of leading activism to preserve Fire Island subantarctic rainforests against a U.S.A. logging company, believe me a bit: activists life is far darker and tougher than PR use to publish as Mrs. Deegan did.

                                    Book Description

You can't compete and win alone. Today, constellations of firms ally against each other--and the firm that stands alone, may fail alone. Now there's a start-to-finish guide to the opportunities and challenges facing today's extended enterprise. In The Extended Enterprise, authors Edward W. Davis and Robert E. Spekman show why extended enterprises demand radically new buyer-supplier relationships, why traditional business structures inhibit alliances and partnerships, and how to develop the competencies your company needs right now.

Drawing on extensive research and new case studies, you get realistic strategies for planning, building, and managing the extended enterprise. You'll learn how to decide when to partner and who to partner with; align processes to improve information flow; and especially, develop people who'll work well across organizational boundaries. Above all, the authors offer deep insight into the attitudinal and behavioral changes that are needed in order to rapidly achieve results and sustain them for the long term.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Typical Supply Chain Management.......2003-11-27

Davis and Spekman have written an excellent work that that takes two critical points of departure from traditional supply chain management (SCM) literature. First, Davis and Spekman link SCM with strategy, indicating that SCM (or any form of functional excellence) must be valued for its usefulness as a source of competitive advantage - not as an end in itself.

Second, and more importantly, Davis and Spekman emphasize the importance (and challenge) of true collaboration across enterprise boundaries. While supply chain integration is usually treated as a primarily a matter of gaining visibility or improving synchronization throughout a chain (ie, linking IT systems), Davis and Spekman show that true collaboration depends the integration of business processes and the creation of trust outside traditional enterprise barriers. In short, Davis and Spekman have elevated trust to the level of an absolutely necessary condition for true collaboration in the context of SCM.

Davis's and Spekman's message comes none too soon for companies that have been been burned by ERP or CRM system implementations that have failed to produce results or recover costs, or partnerships that dissolve in frustration. Even when the IT or business process aspects of such implementations are handled flawlessly, ignoring the "softer" side - i.e, failing to build trans-enterprise trust - produces predictable results and destroys shareholder value.

As a consultant dealing with issues surrounding SCM and external coordination, I recommend this book to executives, general managers, and other consultants whose clients struggle to integrate and collaborate across enterprise boundaries.

Information, Systems and Information Systems making sense of the field Peter Checkland and Sue Holwell Lancaster University, UK Science-based technology helps to shape our lives, and no technology is more powerful in this respect than that associated with information. But the emerging linked fields of information systems and information technology are still in a very confused state. There is a torrent of technical developments but the concepts which bring structure to the field and make sense of it lag behind. This book seeks to dispel that confusion, and aims to make sense of IS and IT as a whole. Conventional theory bears little relation to the experience most people have with computer-based systems in organizations. Based on real-world experiences in both the private and public sectors, this book from Peter Checkland and Sue Holwell tackles the subject afresh. Information, Systems and Information Systems provides a practice-based approach to the thinking needed to underpin provision of information support in organizations. Starting from fundamentals, the book develops a coherent account of the field. The book is thus a work of conceptual cleansing. It presents a well-argued and tested account of IS and IT which is both holistic and coherent. The sense-making models which emerge can encompass any particular assumptions about the nature of organizational reality and management, whether 'hard' functionalist or 'soft' interpretive ones, though the authors' sympathies are with the latter.

If you want to know all about data, information, organizations and how information systems aply to all of it, then read this book. Checkland and Holwell made an great service fot the IS community.

4 out of 5 stars useful but not insightful.......2006-12-31

This is a good academic book - it reviews the field of information systems (as promised) quite comprehensively and comprehensibly, but doesn't offer much insight. Checkland's own research on soft system methodology doesn't exactly shine here. The chapter on development of radar is interesting (and as far as I know, historically accurate).

What really stands out about this book is that it serves as an excellent literature review - the references are extensive, useful, and on-target. Checkland and Holwell have certainly done a service by writing this book.
