"Revivolution" is the term coined by San Diego University management professor James A. Belasco and 30-year technology-industry veteran Jerre Stead to describe the process of "renewal through revolution" that they believe is mandatory for those hoping to compete successfully in a corporate universe where monumental change is now the rule rather than the exception. Soaring with the Phoenix is the pair's call to action, in which they spell out their provocative prescription for maintaining equilibrium and achieving gains amidst a rapidly shifting economic reality that could otherwise wreak havoc on the unprepared. "Tomorrow arrives too quickly for most of us," they write. "Stuck in the mire of today's rules that no longer work, we flail around in our search for security. But the answer is right before our eyes. Invent a new tomorrow and change the rules!" Basing their advice on five overarching principles (create your own future, utilize your connections, help others learn, help others succeed, and take ownership of your company and your life), Belasco and Stead offer readers a way to use these strategies to revitalize themselves and their organizations. --Howard Rothman

More often not, companies launch series after series of change initiatives which result in greater and greater failures. Why do these change initiatives fail? The authors of this book argue that it is because companies attempt to make a series of small changes. They see these series of small changes as simply tweaking hey present and therefore doomed.
The authors argue that in the new economy, companies are faced with radical and constant global, technical, social, and for many, personal change. With these sweeping changes, the authors argue that a company must also make drastic changes or encounter the failures of those that have opted for small incremental changes. How does a company make these sweeping changes? Can it be done?
The authors are consultants that had great success reviving the NCR division of AT&T. They draw on the knowledge gained from their success to deliver a step-by-step guide to what they call "revivolution," the process to renew in a revolutionary way the management, team, or organization.

The steps are grounded in the following principles for the "revivolution:"

            · Self-renew is Job 1.
            · We are all part of interconnected, interdependent networks
            · Create successes for all of your connections
            · Learn more in order to contribute more to others' success.
            · Take ownership of your company and your life.

James A. Belasco and Jerre Stead use the metaphor of the mythological phoenix to underline the need for a leader to embrace change. They suggest using the phoenix to create a new vision for yourself and your company. Their "phoenix principles" include personal renewal, recognizing your connection with others and promoting their successes, committing to learning and to taking "ownership" of your life and your company. While the book is easy-to-read, and uses a nifty new metaphor, the ideas are a familiar restatement of Principles of Marketing, Management, and Organizational Behavior 101. We [...] recommend this book to those who haven't taken the basic course lately, or to those whose spirit needs a little old-style renewal dressed in fancy feathers. If you have employees whose focus is flagging, give them a flight on the phoenix.

5 out of 5 stars first good statistical treatment for general distributions.......2001-05-24

The quality movement in the US in the 1980s and 1990s has led to a great deal of quality efforts that stress statistical measurements of process capability. These indices are intended to answer the question "How often will a manufactured part fall outsided specification limits?" Certain standards and tests based on capability indices have validity when the process variation has a normal distribution.

However, it has been my experience in the medical device industry that many processes are non-normal and that the application of the normal theory in these cases can lead one astray. Others have found this to be the case in the automobile industry as well as in other industries.

Also some people treat these indices as though they are known constants when in practice we almost always use sample estimates of means and standard deviations in our calculation of the index. This means that the "index" is itself an estimate of the capability parameter.

These issues are recognized and emphasized by Kotz and Johnson in this wonderful little monograph. It was the first book to address many of these issues and to summarize what it known based on the scattered literature. They treat all the major indices and present normal theory and bootstrap alternatives among others. It is very authoritative and is an important reference for anyone dealing with these quality control issues.

                  Description:
Variability reduction and business process synchronization are acknowledged as key to achieving sharp and timely deliveries in supply chain networks. In this paper, we develop an approach that facilitates variability reduction and business process synchronization for supply chains in a cost effective way. The approach developed is founded on an analogy between mechanical design tolerancing and supply chain lead time compression. We first present a motivating example to describe this analogy. Next, we define, using process capability indices, a new index of delivery performance called delivery sharpness which, when used with the classical performance index delivery probability, measures the accuracy as well as the precision with which products are delivered to the customers. Following this, we solve the following specific problem: how do we compute the allowable variability in lead time for individual stages of the supply chain so that specified levels of delivery sharpness and delivery probability are achieved in a cost-effective way? We call this the variance pool allocation (VPA) problem. We suggest an efficient heuristic approach for solving the VPA problem and also show that a variety of important supply chain design problems can be posed as instances of the VPA problem. One such problem, which is addressed in this paper, is the supply chain partner selection problem. We formulate and solve the VPA problem for a plastics industry supply chain and demonstrate how the solution can be used to choose the best mix of supply chain partners.

                    Description:
Using process capability indices to quantify manufacturing process precision (consistency) and performance, is an essential part of implementing any quality improvement program. Most research works for testing the capability indices have focused on using the traditional distribution frequency approaches. Cheng and Spiring [IIE Trans. 21 (1) 97] proposed a Bayesian procedure for assessing process capability index C"p based on one single sample. In practice, manufacturing information regarding product quality characteristic is often derived from multiple samples, particularly, when a routine-based quality control plan is implemented for monitoring process stability. In this paper, we consider estimating and testing C"p with multiple samples using Bayesian approach, and propose accordingly a Bayesian procedure for capability testing. The posterior probability, p, for which the process under investigation is capable, is derived. The credible interval, a Bayesian analogue of the classical lower confidence interval, is obtained. The results obtained in this paper, are generalizations of those obtained in Cheng and Spiring [IIE Trans. 21 (1), 97]. Practitioners can use the proposed procedure to Cheng and Spiring determine whether their manufacturing processes are capable of reproducing products satisfying the preset precision requirement.

                      Description:
Process capability indices (PCIs) can be viewed as effective and excellent means of measuring product quality and performance, but they are not sufficient for evaluating an entire product with multiple characteristics. [Chen, K.S., Huang, M.L., Li, R.K., 2001. Process capability analysis for an entire product. International Journal of Production Research 39(17), 4077-4087] proposed the process capability analysis chart (PCAC), applied indices C"p"u, C"p"l and C"p"a to evaluate the integrated process capability for a multi-process product. However, as noted by [Pearn, W.L., Chen, K.S., 1997. Multi-process performance analysis: a case study. Quality Engineering 10(1), 1-8], when we take into account the asymmetric tolerance, C"p"n reflects the process capability more accurately and is superior to index C"p"a. In this paper, we select C"p"n to replace C"p"a, and reconstruct a process capability monitoring chart (PCMC) for evaluating process potentials and performance for an entire product, which consists of smaller-the-better (with C"p"u), larger-the-better (with C"p"l), nominal-the-best (with C"p"n) specifications, respectively. Meanwhile, an integrated product capability index is proposed, and the relationship between the index and the process yield of an entire product is described. A PCMC, which reasonably and accurately indicates the status of all process capabilities for the silicon-filler product, is designed for practical applications.

                        Description:
Process capability indices have been widely used in the manufacturing industry providing numerical measures on process potential and process performance. Capability measure for processes with single characteristic has been investigated extensively, but is comparatively neglected for processes with multiple characteristics. In real applications, a process often has multiple characteristics with each having different specifications. Singhal [Singhal, S.C., 1990. A new chart for analyzing multiprocess performance. Quality Engineering 2 (4), 397-390] proposed a multi-process performance analysis chart (MPPAC) for analyzing the performance of multi-process product. Using the same technique, several MPPACs have been developed for monitoring processes with multiple independent characteristics. Unfortunately, those MPPACs ignore sampling errors, and consequently the resulting capability measures and groupings are unreliable. In this paper, we propose a reliable approach to convert the estimated index values to the lower confidence bounds, then plot the corresponding lower confidence bounds on the MPPAC. The lower confidence bound not only gives us a clue minimum actual performance which is tightly related to the fraction of non-conforming units, but is also useful in making decisions for capability testing. A case study of a dual-fiber tip process is presented to demonstrate how the proposed approach can be applied to in-plant applications.

                            Book Description

A basic question asked in many quality oriented organisations is--are we capable of meeting our customers' expectations? And if so, how capable are we? The difficulty encountered in answering this seemingly straightforward question has sparked an avalanche of research and debate around the world. One method that has gained widespread industrial acceptance is the use of process capability indices to describe the relationship between the process output and the product tolerances. This book describes all of the various indices and shows how to use them in a format that is easy to use and understand. Using process capability indices to express process capability has made the setting and communication of quality goals much simpler, and their use is expected to continue to increase. This book will therefore become essential reading for quality engineers and applied statisticians who are interested in maximising process capability. The authors are world experts in the field and they have combined academic rigour with a lively and entertaining written style that conveys their enthusiasm for the subject.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful text on process capability.......2001-05-24

The objectives of this text are very similar to the objectives in the Kotz and Johnson treatise of 1993. Written 5 years later this text can be looked at in part as an update to that volume.

However, that book was more of a reference manual for process capability whereas this book reads more like a course text including many more illustrations and examples. Also there is an attempt here to include both the theoretical and applied aspects of capability indices.

It covers the available distribution theory results for processes with normal distributions and non-normal as well. The effect of non-normality is carefully analyzed and alternative methods including the bootstrap are considered. This has all the attributes of Kotz and Johnson book but is more current, more detailed and has more references.

                                Book Description

Ian Gazeley's comprehensive study examines changes in the definition and measurement of poverty in Britain during the first 60 years of the 20th century. Commencing with Rowntree's social survey of York in 1899 and ending with Abel-Smith and Townsend's Poor and the Poorest in 1965, Gazeley shows how the causes of poverty changed over the course of this period. Using the results of recent re-examinations of the social surveys of the period, Poverty in Britain, 1900-1965 also evaluates the extent to which the reduction in poverty is due to the actions of the State or to increases in real income.

PRINCIPLES OF ADVERTISING AND IMC, 2/e by Tom Duncan explains the principles and practices of advertising and the other marketing communication functions within an integrated context complete with an integrated planning process. Duncan’s text presents the new ways companies communicate with business-savvy customers. It also shows how and why top management demands accountability of how advertising and promotion dollars are spent. PRINCIPLES OF ADVERTISING AND IMC provides students with a basic understanding of all the major marketing communication functions, the major media alternatives, and the processes for integrating these activities in the most effective and efficient way in order to develop long-term, profitable customer relationships that build brands and create brand equity. Based on feedback from reviewers, author Tom Duncan has increased the 2nd Edition coverage of key advertising concepts (like channel marketing, customer service, direct response and personal selling) to ensure a well-rounded approach to the Principles of Advertising course.

AdSim is an Advertising Simulation set in the consumer electronics industry where students are required to make decisions about Agency selection; Brand positioning and messages; Media Selection, including traditional and non-traditional; Market Research, both ordering and interpreting; and Budgeting. This simulation, created by SmartSims, provides a highly engaging means of developing a real understanding and appreciation of the fundamentals and dynamics of communications, advertising and promotion in business. AdSim challenges students to apply recently learned concepts, principles and explained practices in development of overall communications, advertising and promotion campaigns, whether against the computer in the Single-Player version or in direct competition with their peers in the Multi-Player version.

AdSim for Duncan incorporates an Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) approach as promulgated in Principles of Advertising and IMC, 2/e by Tom Duncan. AdSim for Duncan has been modeled on the contemporary US Digital Camera Market. Using this simulation, students will develop: • A better understanding of how to implement an IMC approach in the development of an overall advertising and promotion plan. • Insights into selecting different media for specific communications goals and target markets while being constrained by a fixed budget. • Insights into the influence of brand awareness and the importance of on-going measurement. • A better understanding of implementing promotion campaigns for existing customers, including the use of customer relationship management (CRM) applications. • Critical decision-making and team participation skills in an interactive learning environment.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent "how to" on Critical Chain.......2006-11-23

This book really digs into the "how to" of critical chain, and even how to use it alongside critical path when you've got stakeholders that make it necessary. It's very clear and has some good illustrations of the concepts via scenarios and lots of figures. I think the novels "The Goal" and "Critical Chain" by Goldratt should probably be prerequisites to this book so the concepts are clear, or maybe just "Critical Chain". If you start out with those books, which are both written as novels, you'll have some easy reads and a way to become immersed in TOC concepts before diving into the details.

5 out of 5 stars Which ToC PM book to choose?.......2004-09-03

If you're looking for a good introduction to Theory of Constraints project management, you really have only three choices: this book, Lawrence Leach's "Critical Chain Project Management", and Goldratt's original "Critical Chain" explanation cum novel. Leach can be dismissed out of hand -- his book only marginally discusses ToC PM and it's the most expensive of the three to boot. Goldratt is "the source", but making practical sense of "Critical Chain" and converting it into usable techniques is a chore. That leaves Newbold's "Project Management in the Fast Lane", and it's the star of the group. Newbold clearly describes the various techniques needed by a project manager to actually USE ToC PM. In addition, he addresses the equally thorny issue of how to introduce these concepts to an organization. And all from a very practical, down-to-earth perspective. If you get only one ToC PM book, it needs to be this one.

Do not bother reading "Critical Chain" novel. This is the book to start with. Read it twice: it has so much new thinking against traditional thought that unless you already has TOC concepts it requires a second reading (as good movies). It is a little conceptual book, but if you want more practical advice, you can continue with books like "Critical Chain Project Management" by Lawrence P. Leach; Advanced Project Portfolio Management and the PMO: Multiplying ROI at Warp Speed by Gerald I. Kendall, Steve C. Rollins; and if you are interested in Software Engineering: Agile Management for Software Engineering: Applying the Theory of Constraints for Business Results by David Anderson.

5 out of 5 stars Proactively deals with inaccurate project estimates.......2001-09-20

The achilles heal of project management, especially in product development, are the estimates of time and resources. Traditional project management approaches do a lousy job of solving this. For example, although traditional PERT was developed to do this, it is not used. (In fact, in most environments PERT is not defined as the tool but as a network diagram because of this.) Finally, there is an effective approach to proactively dealing with inaccuracy in estimates. The critical chain approach can accomplish this, and this is the best book for defining what critical chain is.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but disappointing.......2001-07-10

Newbold covers the basic TOC concepts and applies the thinking processes to project management. He also has several helpful insights into implementing TOC in an organization. It is good information, but Newbold can't seem to decide what he is trying to accomplish with the book - teach project mgmt or implement TOC in an organization. There is lot's of good information and worth reading, but the information is a bit fragmented. I get the sense that Newbold has taken a set of isolated lectures and tried to make a book out of them. The materials need a class room discussion to really sink in. As it is, the concepts are rather isolated and disconnected. It probably makes perfect sense to an experienced TOC consultant, but was a bit over my head with only having read two TOC books prior to this one.

                                      Book Description

This book introduces an original and far-reaching industry technology: Business Services Orchestration. BSO is the art of orchestrating the interactions between business services that may represent internal business processes of organizations. Waqar Sadiq and Felix Racca show how BSO enables information technology professionals to develop and design efficient business systems. In Section I they describe an in-depth architecture and methodology for modeling the BSO. Section II focuses on technologies, ranging from component models to programming languages to various kind of protocols. A case study in Section III explains how to apply orchestration to an actual business process.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A 'Must Have' book.......2003-04-03

This book fills the gap between the paradigm of 'business processes/EAI' and the real system integration world. Provides a pragmatic yet general approach with plenty of examples using a commercialy available tool. In other words, it gives you the right balance between technology, methodology and business processes.
It also walks you through a comprehensive methodology that shows a level of maturity not seen in other books. It is not coincidence that the author is a pioneer in this field.
A must have if you need to 'orchestrate' business applications.

I give a 4½ plus. This book is good to have as human service providers are gradually being replaced by digital ones and many enterprises are desperately searching for some loosely-coupled-yet-organized way of "running the show". The authors seem to have a deep knowledge of technology, standards and infrastructure, yet they focus on business benefits ahead of "strong-opinions".
As the boundaries between "proprietary development" and off-the-shelf systems are disappearing, "orchestration" of a variety of components becomes even more important.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compendium on how to leverage BPM technology.......2003-03-03

The book starts out with a high level overview of what technology allows today in terms of automating the orchestration of business services through executable business process models. It goes on to explain the architecture of the BPM tier (Hyper-Tier of IT). It actually describes a full-fledged Methodology to create Orchestrations with a real example. The methodology includes the estimate of the ROI of the projects being analyzed! After the Methodology Chapter, the authors get into substantial detail of the different components of an Orchestration Suite. Very Technical. Finally in the last chapter it all comes together from a technical perspective. It made me re-evaluate my judgement on BPM. I now know that Integration, Orchestration, Workflow need to be one and the same thing under a single process model. The book can be challenging for non-technical audiences after chapter 4. But Business People should not miss chapters 1 through 3.
