Business Process Change Management: ARIS in Practice
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 354000243X |
Book Description
Today's business environment is constantly changing: New customer requirements or products, an evolving competition, new IT solutions like EAI or web services, outsourcing opportunities or changing legal requirements are just a few reasons for this change. Therefore enterprises have to ensure an efficient and effective change management in order to stay competitive and survive on the long term. This is a precondition to achieve and maintain business process excellence.
The book defines business process change management as information, communication, and training that enable people to make change and improvements happen. It shows using case studies from organizations like American Meter, the US Navy, or Amway how this change management is applied in practice using a framework like the ARIS House of Business Process Excellence or software tools like the ARIS Toolset.

Management Philosophy: A Radical-Normative Perspective
Ole F. Kirkeby Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540668926 |
Book Description
This book opens a new field within business science: management philosophy. This discipline gives a thorough and critical foundation of a theory of management and leadership beyond any talk of "value-based" management, and "ethical accounting". It presents an uncompromising picture of the real leader through a set of leadership virtues, focusing on human duties, not on human rights. The book demonstrates that only through philosophy it is possible to establish a genuine science of management, overcoming the pressures of functionalism, opportunism and pragmaticism, inherent in the hyper-modern corporation shaped by high-tech and information advantages.Customer Reviews:
Management phenomenology.......2001-01-19
This book is one of those important books - even if the tradition it belongs to is not structuralism but phenomenology, a certain type of phenomenology to be more specific or as the author himself calls it "radical phenomenology": an original symbiosis of Heidegger's and later Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology and its further development with Plato's and Aristotle's metaphysics and Stoicism to some extent with a basic premise that "postmodernism" has to be defeated by overcoming it on its own premises.
This all comes then down as a treatise which sees a relation between people called management as a common human phenomenon which must however be now turned upon itself to uncover the "virtues of Leadership" in order to liberate management from itself, or from the functionality to "business economics" that the author calls "strategic intentionality". The latter is contrasted with the way to live "good life" that emerges from action (praxis) whose origin and purpose, the good conduct (eupraxia), is in itself. It is exactly here where the book's boldness and originality lie on the one hand, yet on the other, it also points to its Achilles' heel: "phronêsis" (practicing of virtues) belongs to "doxa" (knowledge and experience dealing with the world of senses) and as the origin of Leadership it is not genuinely without a "why" (but let me come back to this a bit later).
The main tool used to open a way to live "good life" is the creation of concepts like "contingency", "event", "will", "transcendent immanence", "principle of translocutionarity", "the fourth" - the author obviously understands what philosophy is - and the framework of "radical normativity" that holds them together. This is carried out mainly in Part I which also discusses rather straightforwardly the relevance of all this to "the success of the modern firm" (has the author given in to the "marketing department" or is this a question of "humour"? - see p.156).
Secondly, the extensive use of Greek (mainly 4th and 3rd century B.C.) terminology functions to open a way to an experience of acting, thinking and feeling not yet upsetted by the often misleading and dubiously connotating Latin translations on which much of our current experience is based - a well motivated strategy not far from Michel Foucault in the History of Sexuality II & III.
Part II explains the author's phenomenological understanding of man as a linguistic, talking and communicating being and draws its epistemological consequences to distinguish from any kind of discursive ethics (business ethics, value-based management, ethical accounting etc.) and its emphasis on rational consensus.
Part III, no doubt the most exquisite part of the book - which is not to forget the excellent treatment of "chôra" in Part IV - explicates how a "virtue", which combines gradually into a "moral character" (hexis), that let the "good action" (praxis) emerge from our "nature" is not realized through rational choice or strategic intention but through action that has no subject outside the passion of acting itself. Part III ends then by outlining six such "virtues" of Leadership: euboulia, enthusiasm and euphoria, hypomonê, prolêpsis, epibolê and maieutic which all unite within katorthôma (the wise person's ultimate good way of acting).
The last Part (IV) discusses "space" and "time" in relation to Leadership through the Greek concepts "chôra" and "kairos" (the right moment).
Though a virtuosic performance, some questions remain. As a conclusion I will shortly point out two - which however (are not so much to criticize the author, but rather phenomenology and) do not in any way decrease the merits of this book. This man must be translated more!
First, the bias of the approach suppresses the separation between the two parts of a knowledge (where any kind of intentionality disappears): seeing and speaking, the visible and the articulable or the difference between light-Being and language-Being (which is not the same thing as Heidegger's "between-two" or Merleau-Ponty's "chiasmus"). This leads to a confusion between the "relation between forms" (knowledge) and the "relation between forces" (power) - as Foucault but also Deleuze and Guattari would have it: the interlacing of the visible and the articulable replaces intentionality with the Platonic model of weaving, but weaving which is a battle; a battle which could not be created if the two irreducible forms did not flow from an element that was itself not of "form": the pure relation between forces. This is the source of the encounter of the two forms (which only collect and solidify its the visual dust and sonic echo) and any experience is caught up in there (i.e. in relations of forces that have no form and are neither bodies or speaking persons): a micropolitics.
Secondly, though management is approached absolutely correctly as a genuine social interrelation and not as a daughter of "business economics", the relationship between Leadership and capitalist valorization is left untouched (and even blessed). Leadership is exemplified as a form of "relating to the presence of others" that operates on the possession of language, on the mood, modality of experience and ability to act, that is, on subjectivity. As such, Leadership functions as a "inner compulsion" indistinguishable from our will and inseparable from our subjectivity itself. Could Leadership not then be characterized as an immanent production of subjectivity, a form of power that resides on the plane of immanence? If so, are we not then dealing with a way of making our "way of existing" function in the production of surplus, and of making the production of surplus function through our "way of existing"? It is through Leadership that the production of surplus tends towards the production of social life itself.

It will also prepare newly appointed leaders to move rapidly into productive leadership.
Not only team leaders, but also all team members can benefit from reading this book. Why? In many teams, members assume sub-team or project leadership from time to time. In addition, more and more organizations are turning to self-directed teams -- teams that have no permanent leader. All members are expected to be ready to lead a project.
This book is not an academic treatise, but a pragmatic guide to team leadership than can be immediately applied on the job. Read it to become acquainted with the many facets of team leadership. Keep this book handy to refer to when special problems arise.
Whether you are an experienced team leader, starting your first job, or you are preparing for promotion, this book will serve as a road map to successful leadership.
Great book, but not what I was looking for..........2000-07-12
Unfortunately, although this book was loaded with so much good stuff, it still didn't have what I wanted. I work in student affairs at a college, and I was looking for a book with activities on team-building to use with student groups. If this is what you're looking for, don't buy this book!
This book has some great stuff for anyone who works with teams, but be careful not to expect any more than concepts and explanations...no activities.

Book Description
The Political Economy of Property Rights investigates the transformation of property rights in post-communist countries and China. Transsexual Workers: An Employer's Guide
Janis Walworth Manufacturer: Center for Gender Sanity ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0966548825 |
Book Description
Here is the second edition of Transsexual Workers, updated in 2003 to reflect the latest changes in corporate practices, legal decisions, and resource materials. Like the first edition, it includes basic information about transsexualism, an explanation of the transition process, illustrative personal histories, information on relevant civil rights and disability laws, tips for managing difficult situations, and a glossary. The book is designed primarily for employers, managers, human resources personnel, implementers of employee assistance programs, and others in a position to make workplace decisions about how to handle a transsexual employee's transition from one sex to the other. It includes suggestions for dealing with coworkers' concerns, uncomfortable clients, the general public, and the media. Common workplace issues, such as pronoun usage, dress codes, restroom use, employee transfers, and health insurance, are addressed. A wider concept of transgender is also introduced as it pertains to crossdressers, transgenderists, intersex people, post-transition transsexuals, and others. A resource section lists helpful websites, national and regional organizations, books, magazines, and videos.Customer Reviews:
A good addition to a transition package...........2004-07-04
They also stated that they were really pleased I had included the books with the package. I believe that it helped ease past the restroom issue, which was taken care of in one day.
Not for an FtM and not for a casual work transition.......2000-12-11
We decided not to use it, as the trans person then becomes some mystical beast who experiences all sorts of horrible internal conflicts, rather than a mature person who made a choice with his life and wants to be treated just like all the other workers.
I think I owe my seamless transition to the fact that I was _me_ throughout the process and not a pathologized idea of a transsexual. My coworkers and employers know me, understand transitioning as mature choice I made, and respect me as a contributor to the organization. Not as someone, as Walworth suggests, to be pitied and understood and sympathized with.
In all, I found that this book undermined both the transsexual's dignity but also underestimated the coworkers' respect good workers. It was also very MtF-centric. (Restrooms are decidedly less of a big deal to the FtM.)
Clear, sensitive, no-nonsense, informative resource........1999-06-24
The resource guide in the back is excellent for going more indepth with various issues.

My thoughts from a Promotion Aspect.......2000-08-27
As someone who has been into and doing web site promotion for almost 5 years 16 hours a day, There is much more involved with getting listed in a search engine than just submitting. There are also many other factors and media outlets that can generate more than enough traffic as well.
I am still undecided on how I like the book. Even with my 4+ years of experiance. I can get my clients listed usually in the top 10 position but I can't write a book about it simply because what I know is just the tips and tricks that work for me. I would never claim to be an expert and even the most highest paid promotion guru's to me are not experts. Search engines are not like riding a bike, Just cause you learn it once, It won't be the same the next time.
Unless the major search engines are sending you an email containing what is needed to get listed, Your going to have a rough time and no book is going to help. You have to learn it on your own like every other Url Submission Service on the web.

Book Description
Exploring Corporate DNA combines two fundamental concepts-corporate pathology and a human renaissance-(1) to explain definitively why organizations and their quality initiatives thrive, age and fail and (2) to explore proven financial strategies that increase corporate productivity, profitability, longevity and market share. While past and current management consulting approaches defend mediocre outcomes (e.g., learning organizations with a 50 percent success rate, TQM with a 40 percent success rate and reengineering with a 30 percent success rate), Exploring Corporate DNA can claim greater than a 90 percent rate of effectiveness.

ASIN: 0195165128 |
Book Description
The mid-1990s saw the rise of an important movement: a recognition that organizational knowledge, in its various forms and attributes, could be an important source of competitive advantage in the marketplace. Knowledge management has become one of the core competencies in today's competitive environment, where so much value in companies resides in their people, systems, and processes. Creating Value with Knowledge: Insights from the IBM Institute for Knowledge-based Organization examines a variety of important knowledge-related topics, some of which has been previously published in such journals as the Harvard Business Review, the California Management Review, and the Sloan Management Review, such as the use of informal networks, communities of practice, the impact of knowledge on successful alliances, social capital and trust, narrative and storytelling and the use of human intermediaries in the knowledge management process. It includes contributions from such leading thinkers as Lawrence Prusak, Dorothy Leonard, Eric Lesser, Rob Cross, and David Snowden. This book synthesizes some of the best thinking by the IBM Institute for Knowledge-Based Organizations, a think tank whose research agenda focuses on the management methods for deriving tangible business value from knowledge management and their real-world application.Books:
