5 out of 5 stars Easy To Understand! Great To Have!.......2005-07-14

I have heard it said, "You don't need God until you need Him," time and time again, and I think this statement applies to this work. No, not the God part, just the concept. "How to Write Proposals, Sales Letters & Reports," is one of those books that you are sure glad you have handy when the situations arises in these areas and you have no clue what to do.
Here is an example I will use about myself. I am looking into writing grants. Now if any of you have gone down this road, you know it can be unsettling to say the least. I was absolutely thrilled to find some help in this work. the author took the confusion out of the process and gave me some great insight into how to proceed; and that's just a small part of this book.
It is basically a business guidebook, written in a clear concise easy to understand way that all can followed by all.
In all reality, when dealing in this area, knowing how to prepare and write a good report, sales letter or even a grant request is something we all will be required to do sometime in our lives.
Do it right the first time and achieve the results you desire., this book will certainly help you with that.

      Book Description

Today's business environment is constantly changing: New customer requirements or products, an evolving competition, new IT solutions like EAI or web services, outsourcing opportunities or changing legal requirements are just a few reasons for this change. Therefore enterprises have to ensure an efficient and effective change management in order to stay competitive and survive on the long term. This is a precondition to achieve and maintain business process excellence.

The book defines business process change management as information, communication, and training that enable people to make change and improvements happen. It shows using case studies from organizations like American Meter, the US Navy, or Amway how this change management is applied in practice using a framework like the ARIS House of Business Process Excellence or software tools like the ARIS Toolset.

      Book Description

This book opens a new field within business science: management philosophy. This discipline gives a thorough and critical foundation of a theory of management and leadership beyond any talk of "value-based" management, and "ethical accounting". It presents an uncompromising picture of the real leader through a set of leadership virtues, focusing on human duties, not on human rights. The book demonstrates that only through philosophy it is possible to establish a genuine science of management, overcoming the pressures of functionalism, opportunism and pragmaticism, inherent in the hyper-modern corporation shaped by high-tech and information advantages.

      5 out of 5 stars Management phenomenology.......2001-01-19

Gilles Deleuze finished an article called "How ro recognize structuralism" published in 1972, by saying that the books against structuralism do not strictly speaking have any meaning. They can not restrain the fact that structuralism is the productivity of our time. Not one book against something has any significance. Only those books that are "for" something and books that can produce something new are important.

This book is one of those important books - even if the tradition it belongs to is not structuralism but phenomenology, a certain type of phenomenology to be more specific or as the author himself calls it "radical phenomenology": an original symbiosis of Heidegger's and later Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology and its further development with Plato's and Aristotle's metaphysics and Stoicism to some extent with a basic premise that "postmodernism" has to be defeated by overcoming it on its own premises.

This all comes then down as a treatise which sees a relation between people called management as a common human phenomenon which must however be now turned upon itself to uncover the "virtues of Leadership" in order to liberate management from itself, or from the functionality to "business economics" that the author calls "strategic intentionality". The latter is contrasted with the way to live "good life" that emerges from action (praxis) whose origin and purpose, the good conduct (eupraxia), is in itself. It is exactly here where the book's boldness and originality lie on the one hand, yet on the other, it also points to its Achilles' heel: "phronêsis" (practicing of virtues) belongs to "doxa" (knowledge and experience dealing with the world of senses) and as the origin of Leadership it is not genuinely without a "why" (but let me come back to this a bit later).

The main tool used to open a way to live "good life" is the creation of concepts like "contingency", "event", "will", "transcendent immanence", "principle of translocutionarity", "the fourth" - the author obviously understands what philosophy is - and the framework of "radical normativity" that holds them together. This is carried out mainly in Part I which also discusses rather straightforwardly the relevance of all this to "the success of the modern firm" (has the author given in to the "marketing department" or is this a question of "humour"? - see p.156).

Secondly, the extensive use of Greek (mainly 4th and 3rd century B.C.) terminology functions to open a way to an experience of acting, thinking and feeling not yet upsetted by the often misleading and dubiously connotating Latin translations on which much of our current experience is based - a well motivated strategy not far from Michel Foucault in the History of Sexuality II & III.

Part II explains the author's phenomenological understanding of man as a linguistic, talking and communicating being and draws its epistemological consequences to distinguish from any kind of discursive ethics (business ethics, value-based management, ethical accounting etc.) and its emphasis on rational consensus.

Part III, no doubt the most exquisite part of the book - which is not to forget the excellent treatment of "chôra" in Part IV - explicates how a "virtue", which combines gradually into a "moral character" (hexis), that let the "good action" (praxis) emerge from our "nature" is not realized through rational choice or strategic intention but through action that has no subject outside the passion of acting itself. Part III ends then by outlining six such "virtues" of Leadership: euboulia, enthusiasm and euphoria, hypomonê, prolêpsis, epibolê and maieutic which all unite within katorthôma (the wise person's ultimate good way of acting).

The last Part (IV) discusses "space" and "time" in relation to Leadership through the Greek concepts "chôra" and "kairos" (the right moment).

Though a virtuosic performance, some questions remain. As a conclusion I will shortly point out two - which however (are not so much to criticize the author, but rather phenomenology and) do not in any way decrease the merits of this book. This man must be translated more!

First, the bias of the approach suppresses the separation between the two parts of a knowledge (where any kind of intentionality disappears): seeing and speaking, the visible and the articulable or the difference between light-Being and language-Being (which is not the same thing as Heidegger's "between-two" or Merleau-Ponty's "chiasmus"). This leads to a confusion between the "relation between forms" (knowledge) and the "relation between forces" (power) - as Foucault but also Deleuze and Guattari would have it: the interlacing of the visible and the articulable replaces intentionality with the Platonic model of weaving, but weaving which is a battle; a battle which could not be created if the two irreducible forms did not flow from an element that was itself not of "form": the pure relation between forces. This is the source of the encounter of the two forms (which only collect and solidify its the visual dust and sonic echo) and any experience is caught up in there (i.e. in relations of forces that have no form and are neither bodies or speaking persons): a micropolitics.

Secondly, though management is approached absolutely correctly as a genuine social interrelation and not as a daughter of "business economics", the relationship between Leadership and capitalist valorization is left untouched (and even blessed). Leadership is exemplified as a form of "relating to the presence of others" that operates on the possession of language, on the mood, modality of experience and ability to act, that is, on subjectivity. As such, Leadership functions as a "inner compulsion" indistinguishable from our will and inseparable from our subjectivity itself. Could Leadership not then be characterized as an immanent production of subjectivity, a form of power that resides on the plane of immanence? If so, are we not then dealing with a way of making our "way of existing" function in the production of surplus, and of making the production of surplus function through our "way of existing"? It is through Leadership that the production of surplus tends towards the production of social life itself.

Has your company moved from traditional work groups to a team format? Is it contemplating such a move? Over 80 percent of Fortune 500 firms already are using teams as all or part of their organizational structure. Nobody know how many less well known companies are following suit.

The Complete Idiots Guide to Team Building will teach you the tools and techniques needed to be a successful team leader. It will enable those with previous supervisory experience to become aware of the changes they must make in management style to succeed in their new roles and what they must do to implement them. It will also prepare newly appointed leaders to move rapidly into productive leadership.

Not only team leaders, but also all team members can benefit from reading this book. Why? In many teams, members assume sub-team or project leadership from time to time. In addition, more and more organizations are turning to self-directed teams -- teams that have no permanent leader. All members are expected to be ready to lead a project.

This book is not an academic treatise, but a pragmatic guide to team leadership than can be immediately applied on the job. Read it to become acquainted with the many facets of team leadership. Keep this book handy to refer to when special problems arise.

Whether you are an experienced team leader, starting your first job, or you are preparing for promotion, this book will serve as a road map to successful leadership.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but not what I was looking for..........2000-07-12

This book is honest, entertaining, and jam-packed with great ideas, helpful hints, and how-to's. There is information about everything from reasons for using teams in the workplace, to forming strong ones, to helping yours become more successful. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know anything about working in teams!

Unfortunately, although this book was loaded with so much good stuff, it still didn't have what I wanted. I work in student affairs at a college, and I was looking for a book with activities on team-building to use with student groups. If this is what you're looking for, don't buy this book!

This book has some great stuff for anyone who works with teams, but be careful not to expect any more than concepts and explanations...no activities.

The Political Economy of Property Rights investigates the transformation of property rights in post-communist countries and China. The movement to effective market economies requires the creation of more effective supporting institutions, especially systems of property rights that decentralize the control of economic resources. This process is inherently political, and thus should be studied from the perspective of political economy.

          Book Description

Here is the second edition of Transsexual Workers, updated in 2003 to reflect the latest changes in corporate practices, legal decisions, and resource materials. Like the first edition, it includes basic information about transsexualism, an explanation of the transition process, illustrative personal histories, information on relevant civil rights and disability laws, tips for managing difficult situations, and a glossary. The book is designed primarily for employers, managers, human resources personnel, implementers of employee assistance programs, and others in a position to make workplace decisions about how to handle a transsexual employee's transition from one sex to the other. It includes suggestions for dealing with coworkers' concerns, uncomfortable clients, the general public, and the media. Common workplace issues, such as pronoun usage, dress codes, restroom use, employee transfers, and health insurance, are addressed. A wider concept of transgender is also introduced as it pertains to crossdressers, transgenderists, intersex people, post-transition transsexuals, and others. A resource section lists helpful websites, national and regional organizations, books, magazines, and videos.

          4 out of 5 stars A good addition to a transition package...........2004-07-04

I am a MTF trannsexual employee and I am in the process of transitioning at work. I put together a package of information for the HR dept and my boss. All involved have taken the time to read the material, including this book and the coworker's guide. All have said that the approach I've used will help things go smoothly.

They also stated that they were really pleased I had included the books with the package. I believe that it helped ease past the restroom issue, which was taken care of in one day.

1 out of 5 stars Not for an FtM and not for a casual work transition.......2000-12-11

As an FtM transitioning in a workplace of reasonable humans beings, I bought this book looking for something to help them out when I transitioned. When I got it, my supervisor and I looked it over and decided that it, in fact, would make people too nervous, more than they would be otherwise -- bringing up anxiety about restrooms (there's a lot of talk about restrooms), giving permission for coworkers to express inappropriate behavior and ask rude questions, etc.

We decided not to use it, as the trans person then becomes some mystical beast who experiences all sorts of horrible internal conflicts, rather than a mature person who made a choice with his life and wants to be treated just like all the other workers.

I think I owe my seamless transition to the fact that I was _me_ throughout the process and not a pathologized idea of a transsexual. My coworkers and employers know me, understand transitioning as mature choice I made, and respect me as a contributor to the organization. Not as someone, as Walworth suggests, to be pitied and understood and sympathized with.

In all, I found that this book undermined both the transsexual's dignity but also underestimated the coworkers' respect good workers. It was also very MtF-centric. (Restrooms are decidedly less of a big deal to the FtM.)

5 out of 5 stars Clear, sensitive, no-nonsense, informative resource........1999-06-24

This is a book I can recommend to our counselors, job developers and employers alike to increase awareness, understanding, and more comfort around issues which may be very new to many people.

The resource guide in the back is excellent for going more indepth with various issues.

I am a transgendered employee at a large corporation. My manager found this book extremely helpful in assisting me with my transition at work. In particular it is accessible to people unfamiliar with gender issues without being dry or long-winded. Its employer perspective is especially helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Honest Promotion Techniques.......2000-10-18

I was looking for a book that talked about how to promote my web site in an attempt to raise my rankings higher. (I will not mention my site here as to lower the credibility and real intent of my review.) As someone who has recently started a part time web consulting business, I have found this book to be of a great value. Though my web design program is great about telling me how to design my page, but it didn't tell me how to promote the sites I create. That is why I purchased this book. I like the author's recommendations of honest promotion techniques and avoiding the use of "Tricks" to manipulate how the engines index my site.

4 out of 5 stars Promoting my Website.......2000-10-14

As an amateur promoting my website this book caught my eye. Using several tips from the book I was able get my website ranked higher in search engines. This has increased traffic on my page and has given me many more sales and has helped me with my business.

4 out of 5 stars My thoughts from a Promotion Aspect.......2000-08-27

The book offers many good insights about promoting a website. However, Like the other review said, not being able to find the site by searching in a search engine is natual.

As someone who has been into and doing web site promotion for almost 5 years 16 hours a day, There is much more involved with getting listed in a search engine than just submitting. There are also many other factors and media outlets that can generate more than enough traffic as well.

I am still undecided on how I like the book. Even with my 4+ years of experiance. I can get my clients listed usually in the top 10 position but I can't write a book about it simply because what I know is just the tips and tricks that work for me. I would never claim to be an expert and even the most highest paid promotion guru's to me are not experts. Search engines are not like riding a bike, Just cause you learn it once, It won't be the same the next time.

Unless the major search engines are sending you an email containing what is needed to get listed, Your going to have a rough time and no book is going to help. You have to learn it on your own like every other Url Submission Service on the web.

5 out of 5 stars very organized and easy to read.......2000-08-02

I think this is an excellent book for both the amateur and experienced person. The book is especially helpful in explaining how to organize and increase website traffic through the use of keywords. It also has helpful information on how to promote your website to search engines. If you want to read a book that will improve your website and you want your website to be found easily through search engines, then read this book!

2 out of 5 stars Get another book on this topic.......2000-07-25

The book has a website given on page 13. Try to find the website using a search engine (Altavista for example). I tried the search using every word in the books title and wasn't able to find it in the first 20 pages listed in the search. If you buy a book on search engine placement, the proof should be evident in an actual search. Must I say more.

3 out of 5 stars Excessive for reading - useful for reference.......2006-05-08

Ok, so my initial motivation for buying this book was the fact that my business school listed it as mandatory on the syllabus. After having emptied my pockets, feeling the stinging sensation of being ripped off crawling up my spine, I sat down to read this behemoth. Though undoubtedly clearly written, that is of little help when it’s also coma inducing. For the sake of trying to be unbiased, I will give the authors credit for extensively covering pretty much everything you need to know about corporate strategy. Thus, I am led to conclude that this book might serve its purpose as a reference for the strategy-interested student or manager (I am neither), rather than as a book you would sit down and read. For those majoring in strategy, it might come in handy, for all others however; stay clear! If you’re looking to get a solid grasp of strategy, I would recommend the book ‘Strategic Management’ by Saloner, Shepard and Podolny (all from Stanford), supplemented with the original writings of Porter and the Barney (the resource-based view). It’s [Strategic Management] one third the size of this book, much cheaper and a lot more interesting to read, even for someone not really into strategy (I fall into this latter category). The Saloner reading is undoubtedly more suitable for managers also, as its focus is on the implementation of strategy, and the strategy process.

To conclude, I want my $130 back!

          5 out of 5 stars katz - CIMA .......2005-08-12

I am now at the final level of CIMA. In the previous level of CIMA I used this book for one of the papers.

This is one wonderfully written book on this dynamic subject. The authors explain cleary - and above all - in plain simple english the various ways in which strategies are formulated and implemented.

The book starts by giving an example of a merger between AOL and Time Warner and then proceeds to Introduce Strategy in broadest terms. In this chapter take a note of the Johnson and Scholes Strategic Management Model. This book totally builds upon this model. Frequently turning back to this model is a useful visual tool that helps you understand where you're heading towards.

The book covers the following areas:
          1. Introduction to Strategy
          2. Environmental Analysis
          3. Corporate and Business Strategy
          4. Implementing

Also this book gets the '5 stars' for the cases that are presented at the end of text. The cases at the end are great collection to test your knowledge.

This is the one book that every student of a strategy class will have to read. Also I believe that this book will never gather dust in any students shelves.

Hey stop thinking, stop scratching your head, Go get yourself an academic introduction to the corporate strategy world. Go now.

5 out of 5 stars both a basic and sophisticated book.......2005-01-26

This book has been used by 600000 students worldwide. It is a well balanced book which both covers the basics of strategic managment and the more sophisticated areas using three lenses - which are different ways of seeing strategy. It is well structured and easy to dip into. The cases are varied and international.

I use this book as a core text book in undergraduate and Masters courses on Strategy. I have contributed to it so could be considered as biased but I do not receive any money for increased circulation.

The book is very useful for all scholars as well as professionals. This book is an excellent reference and I am happy to have it in my home library. I will be having an exam on Strategic Management on Wednesday 08/08/2001 at 17:00 PM Saudi Arabia Time. Part of the exam will be on the Pharmaceutical Industry Case Study in the book. Would you help me in this regard? Would you send me a brief about the case and how it is applicable in regard to Five Forces and Business Environment?

          Thank you very much.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Strategic Management.......2000-07-29

This is one of my favourite strategy texts. At first, I found this book fairly heavy reading. However, once I got deeper into the subject, I found it very useful (especially when I was studying for an MBA). I believe that the text provides the reader with a good grounding on strategic principles on which to build more specialist knowledge of the subject.

The text covers all the key steps of strategy development including analysis, selection and implementation. For each step, Johnson and Scholes also provides a number of techniques (including, PEST analysis, Porter's Diamond, Porter's Five Forces, Value Chain analysis, SWOT, Cultural Web, etc).

5 out of 5 stars Best study book in Strategy currently available.......2000-05-28

When being midway in my MBA Strategy course, I bought this book. I've never regretted it, and it continues to be one of my favorites. In fact, I have many times wished I had it as my study litterature, as the authors manage to get thru a number of subjects in sufficient detail to make it understandable. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject. If you're not interested in Strategy, skip this book, as they are very concentrated on making you understand and learn what they are discussing. In short, I won't trade this book for anything, it saved my hide a number of times during study and I keep getting back to it to refresh my memory or understand some finer points.

              Book Description

Exploring Corporate DNA combines two fundamental concepts-corporate pathology and a human renaissance-(1) to explain definitively why organizations and their quality initiatives thrive, age and fail and (2) to explore proven financial strategies that increase corporate productivity, profitability, longevity and market share. While past and current management consulting approaches defend mediocre outcomes (e.g., learning organizations with a 50 percent success rate, TQM with a 40 percent success rate and reengineering with a 30 percent success rate), Exploring Corporate DNA can claim greater than a 90 percent rate of effectiveness.

                            Book Description

The mid-1990s saw the rise of an important movement: a recognition that organizational knowledge, in its various forms and attributes, could be an important source of competitive advantage in the marketplace. Knowledge management has become one of the core competencies in today's competitive environment, where so much value in companies resides in their people, systems, and processes. Creating Value with Knowledge: Insights from the IBM Institute for Knowledge-based Organization examines a variety of important knowledge-related topics, some of which has been previously published in such journals as the Harvard Business Review, the California Management Review, and the Sloan Management Review, such as the use of informal networks, communities of practice, the impact of knowledge on successful alliances, social capital and trust, narrative and storytelling and the use of human intermediaries in the knowledge management process. It includes contributions from such leading thinkers as Lawrence Prusak, Dorothy Leonard, Eric Lesser, Rob Cross, and David Snowden. This book synthesizes some of the best thinking by the IBM Institute for Knowledge-Based Organizations, a think tank whose research agenda focuses on the management methods for deriving tangible business value from knowledge management and their real-world application.
