      Book Description

A Joint Publication with the Council for Exceptional Children

"The authors clearly explain the "why" of alternate assessment and support this with lots of "how-to" information throughout the book. It is hard to imagine a teacher or administrator who wouldn’t gain valuable new skills from reading this book."
      Victor Nolet, author
      Accessing the General Curriculum

A real-world guide to creating a system of inclusive education . . . measured by inclusive assessments

Students with disabilities need and deserve alternate forms of assessment. They offer greater opportunities for inclusion in general education classrooms, improve the level of education overall, and ‘raise the bar’ for individual students.

Now a distinguished group of experts in special education have combined current research and a rich variety of case studies to produce a guidebook on alternate assessment—a landmark book for general and special education administrators, teachers, parents, and professionals responsible for development, training, implementation, and continuous improvement of alternate assessments at all levels.

Alternate Assessments for Students With Disabilities will show you:

. . . offering processes and insights based on the real-world experience of states and districts across the country—concrete examples on which professionals can build a solid understanding of alternate assessment.

Thompson and her coauthors offer a "big picture" of high expectations, assessment, and accountability for students with significant disabilities, guiding readers through the process of alternate assessment from beginning to end. Several chapters include examples of worksheets and forms that have worked for some teachers, and in some settings, along with insights into how they can be used to help your students within the context of your own state policies and regulations. Additionally, Alternate Assessments for Students With Disabilities can serve as a resource for planning staff development at the state or district level, and the information can be used by collegial "learning communities" within schools as well.

Given the wide variations in settings and needs, Alternate Assessments for Students With Disabilities is specifically designed to empower you to better understand your own state or district requirements and to get the most out of whatever alternate assessment approach you choose.

All students can learn . . . and Alternate Assessments can be a key to making that a measurable reality in your school.

        Book Description

This unique book covers assessment of both relevant academic and functional skills of students with disabilities as they are embedded in the general education curriculum. This book addresses a critical challenge faced by teachers in inclusive settings: how to appropriately address the functional skill needs of students with disabilities in general education settings, while at the same time, provide adequate coverage of basic academic skills. Pedagogical elements such as learning objectives and lists of key terms make this a comprehensive, clear and useful book. For anyone interested in special education assessment.

From the author: Given the mandates of IDEA to include students with disabilities in large-scale assessments, most states have either adopted alternate standards or developed alternate assessments. In either case, it is difficult to understand the students' performance relative to the primary assessment program. And in both cases, the technical adequacy is generally assumed rather than specifically documented. In this study, we developed a series of standardized tasks that can be considered as part of the same construct as operationalized in the primary large-scale assessment program. We then analyzed student performance to ascertain reliability and initial validity. In reading and math, teachers were trained to administer the tasks and judge performance, providing a system with instructional and evaluative uses. The results support the technical adequacy of the alternate assessment.

From the author: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 (IDEA) require that all states develop and implement, by July 2000, alternate assessment methods for those students with disabilities who cannot be included within regular state and local district educational assessment and accountability measures. The focus of this article is how two states have addressed a set of seven essential questions in developing their alternate assessments; why they chose the formats, standards, and implementation systems that they did; and the intended and unintended consequences that have resulted thus for from those decisions. To further guide the efforts of others, a set of recommendations are provided for states and practitioners to consider in developing alternate assessments to meet the requirements of IDEA '97.

                          Book Description

The globalization of business and the ubiquity of available data in the information age are the driving forces behind the increasing importance of economic forecasting. In order to remain competitive, private and public organizations alike must employ forecasting techniques effectively. Hoshmand emphasizes the application and practical use of such techniques rather than their theoretical grounding. Decision makers and students who have a solid background in economics and statistics will find this book eminently useful. After discussing the role of forecasting in business decisions, the author moves on to smoothing techniques, regression models, and the advanced time series models of Box-Jenkins. Of particular help to practitioners is the concluding chapter on how to communicate forecasts to management. Forecasting professionals and researchers will benefit greatly from the information presented by Hoshmand, especially in their role as advisors to management. Few forecasters and even fewer managers will have had the luxury to remain fully informed of the new developments in this rapidly expanding field. Meanwhile, the importance of accurate forecasting to every realm of corporate strategy--production, inventory, purchasing, accounting, marketing, finance, and acquisitions decisions, to name a few--has increased exponentially due to the proliferation of data, the heating up of global competition, and the softening of many markets. No one today can afford to remain ignorant of the importance of economic forecasting for business decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Even Better Than Before.......2007-04-06

Years ago, I wrote an initial review of this book. Some of Deming's concepts are still certainly profound and abstract enough to require some type of meat to hang on the hooks before understanding and applying them, but I've expanded my understanding and application (in numerous industries) over the years, in part, because I continue to go back to this short but detailed exposition of Dr. Deming's philosophy and theory of modern leadership for renewal. Hard though it may be, what has become more apparent to me is how worthwhile the effort is and how valuable this book is in starting the transformation. Sadly, it has also become equally apparent that few companies use the theory--current efforts in lean notwithstanding--and few managers think this way even though it is even more obvious today that, as Deming originally said over 30 years ago, American business is in a crisis situation. The problem then and now is that most don't realize it. When will we learn? Still a must-read for business leaders, management consultants, and teams dedicated to continuous improvement in every industry. It is not too late to start. It is never too late. Get a copy of this book and begin today.

Deming's concepts are profound, and seemed abstract enough to require some type of meat to hang on the hooks before I could understand and apply them (especially to improving safety performance). Thanks to this concise, informative, and easy to read book, I know longer feel like I'm re-arranging the deck-chairs on the Titanic or nailing poached eggs to trees. I am now empowered to persue the Deming philosophy with renewed confidence and accuracy. A must-read for business leaders, management consultants, and teams dedicated to continuous improvement. I will be providing a copy to each member of our corporate safety team.

                                  Book Description

This book throws new light on the interlocking commercial relationships of the Atlantic trading world during the centuries ending with the American and French Revolutions. Grouped under four themes--the role of merchants and their connections; the development of trades; imperial economies; and colonial working societies--and written by an international team of economic historians, these essays increase our knowledge and understanding of the transatlantic economy. Contributions include studies of individual businessmen, labor patterns, port cities, branches of trade, and comparative studies of trading nations.

Written by one of the leading authorities on trade and finance in the early modern Atlantic world, these fourteen essays, revised and integrated for this volume, share as their common theme the development of the Atlantic economy, especially British America and the Caribbean. They first establish the strenghts and weaknesses of the sources available for understanding that economy and then exhibit by example how such materials can be used to analyze some of its key elements.

                                                Book Description

The Business of Ecommerce explains how to conduct business over the Web. Accessible and useful to both technical and nontechnical readers, the book describes the relevant business issues to technologists and technical issues to business managers. Paul May combines his experience as a consultant to both blue chip companies and Internet startups to provide a generic model for understanding ecommerce opportunities. He makes accessible all of the relevant technologies. This book empowers technical and business decision-makers to maximize the opportunities of ecommerce.

                                                5 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction.......2005-08-06

As someone who is getting into the e-conmerce world late in the game, I found this book a great introduction to the issues and problems businesses face in moving online. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs practical guidance entering the realm of e-commerce.

                                                4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-05-09

This book is an e-commerce primer. Although its material can seem dated (which happens quickly in this environment), the book is valuable for those who want a historical overview of Internet commerce and technology. Yes, e-commerce has changed so much so quickly that any analysis of Peapod, Streamline, and other e-tailers may seem naïve. But Paul May's discussion of the movement from fat to thin client architecture is interesting and relevant. (One only wishes that the WAP discussion went further!) While this book may not be for every executive or change leader, we [...] recommend it to marketing directors as a valuable bridge between business and technology. It also can benefit those who want a strong, but not dauntingly deep, technical overview.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and enjoyable read.......2000-10-02

This book is one of a series called Breakthroughs in Application Development. I found the book to be an excellent introduction to the challenges, risks and opportunities that E-commerce brings to business, as well as to our personal lives as consumers. What I particularly liked about this book was that it used both successes and failures as examples to learn from. Also, Paul May does a good job of identifying the real business drivers (not just the buzzwords) which make going "E" so important in the current age. He examines the kind of out of the box/cross-functional thinking that is needed by both business and IT to make a substantial impact on the e-commerce world.

The book also covers the applicable technology at a high level, but not before stressing the importance of a well thought out business plan before diving into incoherent forays on the web. The most startlingly obvious recommendation he made was for companies to encourage and even subsidize their employees experiences on the Internet (a la Ford Motor Company buying PC's for all their employees, allowing access to the internet from work, etc.) since that's the best way to get them e-aware, both as consumers and professionals.

I would definitely recommend this book both for business and technical people. Paul May uses humor and even sarcasm to keep the book light and engaging without skimping on content or credibility.

5 out of 5 stars Best E-Commerce Book this Year!.......2000-09-19

`The Business of E-Commerce' is a great introductory text for senior (technical and non-technical) management, university students and consultants addressing the history, strategy and business models, specific applications as well as the technology required to quickly understand what e-commerce involves.

The well-structured, lightly illustrated and referenced chapters span:

++ getting there- about virtualization, globalization, and intellectualization aspects of business change, and exploitation through origins, recent history, interactivity, connectivity and continuity.

++ a generic business model for e-commerce- local business drivers (copycat, channel development, cost reduction, and partner inclusion), new maps (physical/informational/B2C, B2B, and cross-pollination), and role types (intermediation, disintermediation, reintermediation, and transformation agents).

++ pathfinder application areas- B2C retail, auctions, and advice; and B2B procurement, inventory exchange, and real-time collaboration.

++ technology landscape- data, dynamic networks, security, payment solutions and e-commerce standards.

++ architectures for electronic commerce- logical, technical, and organizational.

++ open issues- legalities (intellectual property, responsibility and privacy, regulation and taxation), technical issues (platform risk, communication disconnect, skills), and market issues (volatility, locus, and trust).

Strengths include: the well-structured `mature' text; the useful lengthy glossary of terms; the attractive style with mostly complete and correct content often supported by useful illustrative anecdotes or supporting materials; and the author's obvious comfortability with discussing some technical aspects supporting e-commerce (1960s EDI, Java, XML, Jini etc..). Weaknesses include: gaps relating to organizational (e-business) development lifecycle necessary to leverage the technology and business models; manufacturing examples with errors (not all manufacturing processes just have discrete steps!); real-time confusion (see any control engineering text for precise & correct definitions); gap relating to object-oriented systems/ virtual organization development (briefly mentioned about 100 pages late!); better referencing and supporting material, and need for more sidebars & illustrations, and about 15% reduced text for same content.

This reviewer got the impression that detailed discussions were avoided to minimize the need for frequent updates/ revisions. Yet perhaps such tabulated comparisons of contemporary tools for applications and organizational development, details of various offerings from major consultancies, and discussion of web-enabled ERP, CRM, CRM, BI (and all those other software acronyms) would have added value for the reader to better implement e-commerce solutions.

Some alternative texts include: the weaker inspiring `Futurize Your Enterprize' by Siegel; the weaker draft `Exploring E-commerce' by Fellenstein/Wood; and Hoque's `E-enterprise' which is initially promising but ultimately unsatisfactory (too much repetition, error, and `jargonism' without support, despite some good charts and structure, to be considered worthwhile).

Overall, a useful and entertaining read- amongst the best books (read by this reviewer) in the last year.

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive introduction of E-business........2000-09-05

It's really a comprehensive book for novice who wants to learn the concept of E-business from scratch. It gives reader a wide spectrum of themes on business of e-commerce. Wade though it, and you will find yourself filled with e-business wisdom.

Tom Peters thinks that you can turn you "dept."--be it the HR "dept." or the payroll "dept."--into a professional service firm with the same level of creativity and commitment of the firms we always seem to hear about--McKinsey & Co., Chiat/Day, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. In The Professional Service Firm50, Peters spells out 50 ways to transform your "dept." into a client-centered, passionate organization. His advice ranges from "Bring in wild and woolly outsiders. E-x-p-a-n-d the box" (no. 27) and "A rabid scheduler is a must!" (no. 32) to "Become a Research & Development evangelist" (no. 35) and "Provide 'project management-leadership' opportunities" (no. 45).

The Professional Service Firm50 joins Peters's Reinventing Work series, which also includes The Projects50 and The Brand You50. Like that of all the titles in this series, this book's presentation--especially its bouncing typography--is distinctive and at times overwhelming. Nevertheless, managers looking to inject new ideas and life into their departments will find lots of high-energy advice here. --Harry C. Edwards

                                                Book Description

Transform white collar departments into "professional service firms" whose sole, powerful asset is knowledge.

Idea: You are boss of a 23-person finance department in a division of a big company.  Or, rather, you were boss of the finance department.  Now, per our suggestion-model, you are Managing Partner, Finance Inc., a full-fledged professional service firm which is a wholly owned subsidiary of your division.

Goal: Learn from the best professional service firms!  Transform your unit!  Today, even after re-engineering done well, the "department" doesn't look much like McKinsey, Andersen or Chiat Day.  (And that's an understatement!)

Aim, in short: Cool people (call them "talent") working on cool projects with cool clients.  The aim redux: A cool Finance/Purchasing, IS, HR, Sales department. Why not?

The cool professional service firm is just that: cool people/talent, a portfolio of cool projects, cool clients.  Period.  It's only asset -- literally -- is brains. It's only product is projects. It's only aim is truly memorable client service.

So step #1, then, is the organization (PSF) . . . transforming "departments" in which white collar folks work into way cool professional sercie firms adding way cool value by doing way cool "stuff".

Peters discusses making the most of presentations, working with outsiders on market analysis, how to imporve brainstorming meetings, how to develop relationships with clients and get the most out of them.

50 of Tom Peters's trademark insights on how to get the most our of your department.

I was truly annoyed by his random writing style and the book's lousy layout. Look at the cover---the inside is just as chaotic. I bailed after 15 pages or so. Too bad, as he has some good things to say, but it wasn't worth the effort. As a design advocate I'm amazed that his book designs are so ineffective and shoddy. He loves design but not graphic design?...

5 out of 5 stars Good suggestions for invigorating your department.......2003-09-10

Tom Peters sees himself as the antidote to the Dilbert mentality -- the relentless negativism caused by workplace bureaucracy that stifles creativity, stamps out individuality, and does its best to turn people into uninspired, clock-watching drones.

Peters seems to understand that many workplaces ARE uninspiring, but he urges you to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. And those of you who run departments are in a great position to turn your department or company into a nimble, energetic Professional Service Firm that empowers employees and sees clients as equal partners in a creative, exciting task. Whether you work in a law firm, an accounting office, or a purchasing department, Peters thinks you can make your work dynamic, inspiring, and challenging -- and treat your employees like valuable individuals.

This book is divided into fifty chapters, each of which offers a suggestion for ramping up into the dynamic world of the Professional Service Firm. The book reads like a management consultant who has been reading too much beat poetry (lots of ellipses, exclamation points, and all caps) but it works -- the book reads like an energetic screed that packs a punch.

If you're interested in books that empower and inspire, please read my book "The Rules of Ruthlessness," which offers a message somewhat similar to Tom Peters' books. You can buy "The Rules of Ruthlessness" on Amazon, and you can learn more about the book at ruthlessness.com.

1 out of 5 stars good information but hard to dig out.......2001-08-19

Unfortunately one of the worst books I have ever read (certainly the worst layout).

Whilst there is some valuable information contained in the text, the bizarre writing style (changing font / colur / caps / exclamations marks / cliches etc.) makes for hard work digging the nuggets of gold out.

Personally I'd recommend spending your valuable time reading a text that's easier than this one with its appaling use of language(cool! phat! wow!) and oh-so obvious observations.

                                                5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-07-10

Tom Peters takes this book's role in the "Reinventing Work Series" seriously. He urges corporate departments, such as human resources and accounting, to reinvent themselves as professional service firms, thinking of their work as projects and of their companies as clients. He believes this will result in a more energized workforce and higher-quality work. His approach is marked by his now signature "gee whiz" writing style, which is punctuated by large typefaces, exclamation points and remarks like "Amen!" and "WOW!" We [...] recommend this book for its innovative points and no "b.s." attitude, but Peters-bashers will groan at the repetition of ideas and cheerleading expressions. This is a useful, inspiring pep talk, and if it is not exactly In Search of Excellence - which seemed to be written for adults who didn't need quite so much hip-hip hoopla - that was then and this is now.

                                                5 out of 5 stars Typical Peters.......2001-06-19

The CSIS Advisory Panel on Diplomacy in the Information Age calls for a revolution in diplomatic affairs. With a focus on the information revolution, the widening participation of publics in international relations, and the concurrent revolution in global business and finance, the panel's recommendations constitute the architecture for transforming the conduct of U.S. diplomacy. The world in which diplomacy operates remains a dangerous place. If the United States is to exercise global leadership and promote its national interests, the culture of diplomacy must be overhauled to make it more open and participatory; obsolete technology must be discarded and replaced to make diplomacy more efficient and relevant; and a larger community of international and domestic actors must be embraced. Success in meeting the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century will depend on bold and sustained leadership as well as a better trained, more professional diplomatic service.

'Reinventing the Information Technology Department' is both anecdotal and informal but deals with a subject which is of vital interest to Chief Information Officers and IT Managers, addressing questions such as:

                                                      * How does the IT department keep pace with business change?
                                                      * How do we provide stable and responsive IT platforms?
                                                      * How do we add recognised value to the organisation?
                                                      * How do I reinvent my department?

It offers an alternative view of the new roles of the in-house IT function and proposes a rethink about IT services within companies, suggesting a self-help approach to redefining/reinventing in-house IT for CIOs.

The author explains that new modes of business thinking and operation are essential if a company is to succeed in the near future and in light of this covers topics such as self-organising systems, knowledge management, multi-stakeholder perspectives, and empowerment initiatives in relation to the overall business and in particular the IT function.

Each chapter contains implementation templates for the readers to take themselves through the repositioning or reengineering of the IT function and their own departments.

Puts forward action plans explaining how to reinvent the IT Department and keep pace with business change
Explains how IT managers can add recognised value to the organisation and get on the company board
