I use this book as a companion to the comnprehensive text in my graduate course in Applied Business Statistics. It is a major benefit to those students who have been away from the subject for a significant period of time. Plainly written with no jargon, it introduces the basics of various statistical procedures extremely well.

        Book Description

Through her popular interactive Dharma Dialogues (dharma meaning “truth” or “the way”), Catherine Ingram has helped thousands of students in their quest for awakening by encouraging them to give up the quest and let their own “heart intelligence” guide them in life. Through her work, Ingram has found that most people are imbued with “passionate presence,” but often overlook it because they are searching for something more dramatic elsewhere. In this book, she invites readers to simply to relax into their own passionate presence and the innate awakened qualities that come with this relaxation: Silence, Tenderness, Discernment, Embodiment, Authenticity, Delight, and Wonder. With illuminating anecdotes and personal reflections, she describes the seven traits, imparting a sense of the mystery of the world through direct experience, rather than through expounding any particular belief or tradition. Passionate Presence takes us on a heart journey that is an immediate experience of seven awakened qualities, speaking directly to the inherent wisdom within each of us. Inspiring and profound, it is a sojourn into the timeless wisdom secretly known by all.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL AND PROFOUND.......2007-04-15

I bought this book because of E. Tolle's recommendation and I find it to be very inpirational and well written. It covers much of the same material as Tolle but in a different way that enriches and deepens the ideas. It is a book to read and reread.

5 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air.......2006-07-22

I am now reading Passionate Presence for the second time, savouring the language, the feeling and the freshness of the author's approach. I strongly recommend this book to all who agree in principle about living in the 'now' but for whom the experience is elusive at best. This is authentic, well crafted and a joy to read.

        5 out of 5 stars Eye-Opener.......2005-08-27

After reading Passionate Presence, I realized that living in the past & future was such a waste of energy! Catherine's straight-forward advise is something so obvious, but something most of us miss....live in the present. You can't go back and change the past and you spend needless time worrying about the future and what might or might not be instead of enjoying what is right in front of us. I do know that I will spend less time worrying and more time enjoying what this wonderful world has to offer and not take things for granted. Thank you Catherine for providing such a simple but honest eye-opener.

5 out of 5 stars Food for the soul.......2005-01-02

This lovely book shares the wisdom of a teacher of silent meditation and Dharma Dialogues on awakened awareness. It is truly food for the soul.

Catherine Ingram describes her personal experiences in seeking and finding peace in the Now. While mindfulness meditation was a major path, a spiritual teacher catalyzed major shifts in her consciousness. Ingram now teaches mindfulness, through silence, through shared lessons, and (even through the pages of this book) through her personal centeredness.

Seven topics are highlighted: Silence, Tenderness, Embodiment, Genuineness, Discernment, Delight and Wonder. Each is illustrated with lovely stories of Ingram and other seekers on the Path.

Particularly helpful for healing are suggestions for acknowledging the presence of an inner observer who is detached even in the midst of crisis and suffering; for treasuring each present moment rather than living in the past or future; and for accepting that we need not torture ourselves with guilt and remorse because each of us has a lifetime of lessons to learn - and each experience offers us opportunities to develop deeper compassion for others who have their own lessons and make mistakes that may impact negatively on us. We can fester in negative reactions to life that is past or in our anxieties about our future life - or we might just let go of the negativity and move on to the ever-present Now.

I was surprised to discover this book was immediately helpful in finding a stronger connection with my own center of quiet awareness.

There is also a pleasant current of practical advice.

I warmly recommend this book for a good read and re-read.

        5 out of 5 stars A Sigh of Relief.......2004-01-09

When I think about the teachings in Passionate Presence, the word that comes to me is RELIEF: Relief from the burdening belief that one must make a prodigious effort in order to live an awakened life; relief from the burden of ideas of what an "enlightened" person should be like; and relief from the burden of believing one's "I" stories. Once the reader understands the concept of letting go of beliefs, explained so artfully in early chapters, the qualities and experiences that are described in the rest of Passionate Presence are immediately available.
Catherine Ingram's lovely images and stories entice the reader back to the awareness of the moment. She has crafted an artful companion for one who desires to live in the mystery and beauty of an awakened life.

                    Book Description

John Elliot Cairnes (1823-1875) was an ardent disciple of John Stuart Mill, and is often regarded as 'the last of the Classical economists'. He wrote what was the definitive statement of the methodology of the classical school in The Character and Logical Method of Political Economy (1875) and defended Classical Ricardian doctrine throughout his life.

This six-volume set contains virtually all of the published work of Cairnes; it brings together, for the first time, all of his major works and almost all of his uncollected articles, pamphlets, and published letters. It is an essential resource for those studying the man himself, the tradition of Classical economy, and Irish intellectual history in the nineteenth century.

The set includes a new introduction contextualizing Cairnes's life and work and exploring the evolving reception of his ideas.

                      Book Description

Performance consulting is one of the hottest topics in the training field. Many training departments have changed their names and titles, along with mission and vision statements, to reflect consulting as their highest order of priority. Unfortunately, their definition of internal consulting is restricted to determining if training is needed, and, if not, what alternative solutions are available for solving an operational or organizational problem.

The Trainer as Internal Consultant presents a more comprehensive and realistic view of the consulting function. The basic premise is that training is a staff function and, as such, its primary mission is to serve as a consultant to its customers in all matters related to training. All of the areas in which consulting should routinely take place are thoroughly discussed, performance improvement or problem-driven issues being only one of them. Also discussed are a 3-phase consulting model and specific techniques for carrying out consulting activities in such critical areas as entry-level training, organizational development, compliance, and personal and professional development.

A simply structured but comprehensive book that challenges the reader to consider the role of a management consultant, and then provides insightful suggestions about how the role adopted will influence the choice of intervention styles. Contains several useful models and easy to remember techniques. Highly recommended.

Having no formal training in marketing, I was impressed by the straightforward way this book explains how to write a marketing plan. At times I'm tempted to go straight to the tactics-where should I advertise? What should I charge?-but this book prompted me to go back to the beginning, starting with my small business's situation, goals, and competition. This was the first time I've drafted a highly detailed, full-year marketing plan. I used the software packaged with the book as a starting point, but wound up creating a different format and order of topics for my finished plan.

Although I've been in marketing for more than a decade, I got a lot out of this book. The checklists provided invaluable pointers about what to cover when writing a marketing plan. I also bookmarked many of the web sites listed in the appendix so I can use them for further research. The author peppers every chapter with lively, in-depth examples that sparked a couple of new ideas for my business. Even the sample marketing plan in the back of the book was a helpful guide for fleshing out my own thoughts. Highly recommended!

this book is a great supplement to any intro marketing textbook or by itself -- taking you step by step through the process of writing a marketing plan. a practical book for anyone interested in learning/understanding how basic marketing concepts come together, or any new product managers out there not wanting to look like homer simpson ("DOH") when asked to write your first marketing plan. it'll help you frame your thoughts, create an outline of things to cover, and remind you of things you might otherwise forget to include. also serves as a great "cliff notes" type reference of the hefty marketing textbooks you devoured while in b-school.

                            Book Description

How do you get your students actively engaged in applying concepts while writing a marketing plan? What types of tools would you like to help guide them along in the creation process? How do you integrate the ever-changing business environment into the idea of writing marketing plans?

Never has a carefully crafted, properly implemented marketing plan been more important to business success. The text illustrates how marketing planning is actually applied in consumer and business markets, in large and small companies, in traditional and online businesses, and in nonprofit organizations. To reinforce this real-world view, key examples also demonstrate how today’s global economy and dynamic business environment can cause marketers to change their plans as the situation evolves. Through specific features, the text encourages students to formulate imaginative, yet realistic, marketing plans.

Not much more than a collection of anecdotes. Don't expect to learn much here. The section on interviewing, for instance, gives a couple of stories, then a brief guideline, with such original gems as "ask intelligent questions". Nothing on how to find the people to interview, how to connect with them, whether and what you should expect to pay, or how to actually conduct the interview.

The title should have been "How Your Articles Should Look" The book is a good read... It will get the "creative" juices flowing. Through article examples, the book shows you different methods on how your articles should look. If you're searching for a book that goes into the mechanics of article writing, this book is not it.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite sure.......2004-01-29

Maybe I just didn't "get it." More likely my expectations were different than what the author intended. I was expecting "hundreds of ideas to spark my creativity" but got the same number of examples from Harpers, New Yorker, WSJ, Time and just about every other publication known to man, or so it seems. Yes I read some good, actually great, writing examples, but it never came together nor did I get the points being made. Perhaps I'll let it sit on the shelf a while and try again another day. For now, my recommendation is to pick up "How to Write Articles for Newspapers and Magazines" - more information in half the number of pages.

4 out of 5 stars Peter Jacobi knows his stuff!.......2002-02-21

I'm halfway through this book and already have found ways to improve my writing. Copious examples that detail the text. I particulairly found the topic of story structure interesting - something which I had no previous knowledge.

                              3 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!.......2001-05-30

This book was totally the opposite of what I was expecting - namely, practical down-to-earth steps in preparing a magazine article. Instead, it was filled with samples that could be called "motivational" but not the practical tips I seeking. I found the "Writer's Digest Handbook of Magazine Article Writing" by Jean Frederette to be much more of the nuts and bolts that I was looking for. Perhaps a more experienced writer would appreciate the powerful examples in this book; however, as a novice I need to know more tecnique than theory. My book will be shoved to the back of the bookcase for now.

Kim Bayne's The Internet Marketing Plan provides a marketing plan geared toward Web commerce and covers the middle ground between marketing and Web technology. Marketers who are seeking the basics on Web site design or HTML-savvy technicians who are looking for marketing basics can use this book as an outline for their business plans.

Because Bayne's book is dense with information, it's easier to skip around rather than read it cover to cover. Activities augment some of the book's sections and you can use hands-on investigation to reinforce other concepts within the book. The Internet Marketing Plan's diskette contains documents, spreadsheets, and forms that guide the reader through marketing plan creation. Bayne also offers several worthwhile applications of Web technology that can fortify different areas of your company's business.

I am also a small business and struggle to understand the technology that we need to know to keep up! Bayne's book is right on our office reference shelf along with Margo Komenar's Electronic Marketing.Writing a book and running a small business is hard work-give us a break!

1 out of 5 stars Self centered and outdated.......1999-07-31

One could rewrite the book on half the pages- just take out the outdated references, the self-centered self-apraisals of the author plus the party-dialogues. Then- after you reduced the webpages listings to those that still exist and took out some of the too basic checklists- you might have a tool worthwhile spending $ 15 for. I was somewhat surprised that such reputable publisher would put its name behind such a book.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad if you are at the VERY begining...........1999-06-09

There are some good ideas for those at the infant level of an internet presence. If you have already started, don't bother with this one. The format is very much like a school book which make navigation easy. No need to read from front to back.

1 out of 5 stars Out of date & Barely useful!.......1999-04-15

The book needs serious updating being that it was written some time ago, and the Internet changes rapidly. However, if you would like to know what the Internet was like back in 1986, and are ready to base a marketing plan on this then the book's for you! I ordered this book hoping to find quantitative information and in depth advice on approaching the Internet from marketing stand point. It was hard to scrape the pages to come up with anything of use. A basic marketing plan outline, a beginners guide to the internet, and some common sense will bring you a lot further than this book. Some of the links in the bookmark file did not work. If you're online reading this, you basicaly have no use for the book!

This is a good reference marketing plan book for novice people who are serious about learning the right process and fundational technique. Even it was printed in 10 years ago, I was surprised about it is very useful and not out of date at all. It is good to apply to enterprise software business as well, especially in the current market, solid marketing plan is one of key to evulate the product and company success. I have this book as a reference book if you have some budget to keep a few handy marketing books near you.

If you're new to a methodical approach to planning a marketing program, this book probably will help you sort through the issues. For anyone experienced in strategy planning, the book comes across as a bit reductive and pedantic.

To be fair, the book does provide a workable structure that allows novice marketers to focus on the situational issues rather than scrambling just to identify the the required components of a plan. It also may serve as a journeyman-like reference for experienced marketers.

One more note: the book clearly predates the Internet and is very much oriented at the mass marketing of good, old-fashioned consumer products. Don't expect to shift your paradigm here!

If there is a more methodical and detailed approach to marketing planning, I haven't seen it in 20 years in the ad business. The workbook format and the authors' real world experience make this a practical and useful tool for developing a marketing communications plan. The benefit of this approach is that your plan has been viewed from every angle, built methodically and logically, tested against reality, and executed down to the most minute detail. These guys have definitely been around the block. This book is useful in the real world.

This book is an eloquent statement of how you must communicate to overcome the clutter and confusion in your reader's mind. The authors make a strong point: Pick out something unique that matches the needs of some customers and differentiates you from the competition, and keep repeating your message. Do not dilute your message or broaden your positioning. I have seen many of my clients waste hundreds of millions of dollars by failing to heed these lessons, and I was delighted when I first read this book so that I could refer my clients to it. Read this book, use its lessons, and you will vastly increase your influence. In my own work, I find that 'stalled' thinking that delays organizational progress is normally influenced by poor communications. Some of the other stalls are tradition, disbelief, bureaucracy, procrastination, unattractiveness, and misconceptions. Learn your challenge your thinking habits in these areas, and you can have twenty times as much or the same results 20 times faster.

                                  Book Description

Quality of Service (QoS) is a system of classifying data that helps guarantee that mission critical data gets through, no matter how busy a network is at any given moment. In this book expert Eric Seigel provides network administrators with practical, hands-on guidance to planning and implementing QoS solutions. He supplies guidelines for choosing the best QoS solution for a particular network and explains the application and network configuration requirements involved. Step-by-step guidance is also provided on how to build QoS solutions. Finally, currently available QoS technologies are given real-world assessments.

Was referred to this book and it is great. The first part of the book outlines techniques you would use to design a QoS Policy, and the end of the book talks about the different standards and protocols. Not only is the content good, but the writing and explanations are good too.
