A superb contribution to the study of Spengler's life and thought.......2005-09-09

John Farrenkopf's _Prophet of Decline_ fills a gaping hole on a controversial historian. Farrenkopf effectively shows the greatness and magnitude of Spengler's thought while keeping a critical eye throughout the book.

Farrenkopf's prose is crisp and fluid - certainly a complement to the rigidity and obtuseness that is typical of Spengler. Farrenkopf goes to great pains to not only dispel certain lingering myths about Spengler (specifically, that he was a Nazi sympathizer) but also to familiarize the reader with Spengler's influences (especially Ranke) and his more obscure works. As it is impossible to understand Spengler without a larger understanding of the historicism (and Goethe) that permeated his worldview at the time, this contribution is long overdue.

Farrenkopf also devotes quite a bit of time to Spengler's obscure political phase. While certainly an authoritarian conservative, Spengler was certainly no Nazi - he viewed Hitler as a man more "of the people" than a "leader of the people." While Spengler did find court with the Nazi regime during its early years, it appears that it quickly lost interest in him. In fact, Hitler made a reference to "Decline of the West" in one of his speeches - stating unequivocally that he was opposed to the book's thesis!

The book ends on a tragic note as the reader comes to terms with Spengler's "ultra-pessimistic" view of reality. There is no saving culture, Spengler says - we must all come to terms with the fact that our culture will extinguish itself, just as our own lives will eventually wither away. Coming to terms with the true implications of Spengler is not an easy task - especially when one considers that one of the few things Spengler got wrong was his glacial timeframe for predicting the demise of the West. However, foreknowledge of impending doom may lead to potential greatness: in the end of Spengler's _Man and Technics_, he implores us to heed the following words: "We are born into this time and must bravely follow the path to the destined end. There is no other way. Our duty is to hold on to the lost position, without hope, without rescue, like that Roman soldier whose bones were found in front of a door in Pompeii, who, during the eruption of Vesuvius, died at his post because they forgot to relieve him. That is greatness. That is what it means to be a thoroughbred. The honourable end is the one thing that can not be taken from a man."

In close, _Prophet of Decline_ is an excellent, timely, and long overdue contribution to the study of a man that may yet prove to be the West's greatest seer.

Quick, Simple Microsoft Windows 98.......2000-02-08

I've used this book in teaching "Introduction to Microcomputers" and "Introduction to Windows 98" in 5 week classes at Lane Community College in Cottage Grove Oregon.

It is useful for the beginner who cannot even use a mouse to people who are fairly experienced with Windows 95.

The book is well organized and indexed, with windows shown in color.

What is most useful to my students, is the 1, 2, 3 approach to doing a task, practical exercises and an easy to use reference to have on hand for later use.

During the 1980s a host of books on management proclaimed the triumph of Japanese companies' emphasis on corporate values, loyalty, lifetime employment, and consensus. In the first full-length study of Japanese direct investment in the United States, Sullivan shows that Japanese companies generally have not performed well and that part of their problem is poor management. Contrary to popular belief, management practices in Japan are rooted in the clever use of power rather than the development of loyalty or values. While the system of highly authoritarian but benevolent managers and submissive employees has transferred well to some rural manufacturing firms in the U.S., it has fared poorly in urban areas. Using the results of extensive interviews and surveys, Sullivan begins by profiling both an effective and an ineffective Japanese manager in the U.S. He describes their reactions to America's individualism, patriotism, and day to day work practices. Broadening the focus, he describes economic and strategic reasons for the rush of Japanese direct investment and summarizes the data on profitability (low), productivity (less than U.S.-owned firms), and the impact on the American economy (generally beneficial or at least harmless). Japanese management philosophy and practices are analyzed in terms of the idea of work, the nature of a company, and the function of profit. Also discussed are lifetime employment, trust-building, decision making, and communication in the organization. These practices are shown in use both in Japan and in Japanese firms in America. Several chapters describe training of Japanese managers for work in the United States and of Americans in Japanese-owned companies.

To rule their vast new American territories, the Spanish monarchs appointed viceroys in an attempt to reproduce the monarchical system of government prevailing at the time in Europe. But despite the political significance of the figure of the viceroy, little is known about the mechanisms of viceregal power and its relation to ideas of kingship. Examining this figure, The King's Living Image challenges long-held perspectives on the political nature of Spanish colonialism, recovering, at the same time, the complexity of the political discourses and practices of Spanish rule. It does so by studying the viceregal political culture that developed in New Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the mechanisms, both formal and informal, of viceregal rule. In so doing, The King's Living Image questions the very existence of a "colonial state" and contends that imperial power was constituted in ritual ceremonies. It also emphasizes the viceroys' significance in carrying out the civilizing mission of the Spanish monarchy with regard to the indigenous population. The King's Living Image will redefine the ways in which scholars have traditionally looked at the viceregal administration in colonial Mexico.

Best money I've spent on researching Internet business.......2003-02-28

Marc has a winner here. I stumbled across it in my local bookstore, and after flipping through a few pages, knew I had to buy it. The clarity of the message, the practicality of the presentation, and the true wisdom contained within make it a must read for anyone in the Internet or e-commerce field. Furthermore, any savvy business person can learn what they need to do to make better use of the Internet as a marketing, sales, customer service, and operational tool. It's NOT a book for the person who wants to read thousands of words delving into the deepest intricacies of business models, Internet user behavior, or complex financial models. It IS a book for the busy person who doesn't have time (or money) to figure out all of this stuff through trial and error, and who wants to capture the wisdom of others (Marc and the people he interviewed) in an efficient way. I wish I would have had it two years ago -- it would have saved me a lot of time figuring these things out myself.

One last note. I worked with some of the best thought-leaders while I was working with two Big-5 consulting firms, and I saw how the old Chinese proverb "To know, but not to do, is not yet to know" was truly accurate. They knew what they knew because of their experience. Because of his dead-on summary of these essentials, I didn't believe that a book of this quality could come from someone who was just a writer and has a few Internet businesses. I found through further research that Marc was formerly a partner at one of the leading web development and operation firms. I think he should include a few more lines in his too-brief bio to explain that. Even without that, the book speaks for itself.

One paper in the area of taxation is an insightful look at the influence of the earned income tax credit in which the authors collected the data from low-income individual taxpayers. The other taxation paper examines the variables that influence tax professional judgments. This volume also contains a paper examining the behavioral implications of alternative going concern reporting formats--a particularly timely issue as many countries struggle with how to make financial reporting more transparent. Another study examines how forensic experts at professional service firms assess the factors that indicate financial statement fraud. Three research studies examining performance in a managerial setting are also reported. One investigates the differences between individual and collective budgeting decisions with respect to budgetary slack creation and task performance; a second examines conditions that affect budget team performance; and a third examines whether superiors who evaluate the performance of their subordinates consider information asymmetry.
