      Book Description

"As a volume destined to be employed by researchers, practitioners and policy makers, "The Majority in the Minority" appears at the right time in our nation’s demographic history. It connects us to the triumphs an tragedies of our Latino collective pasts and leads us to a more hopeful scenario for the future." -- from the Foreword by Laura Rendón

Latinas/os are the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S. They are propelling minority communities to majority status in states as disparate as California, Florida, New Jersey, New York and Texas.

Their growth in the population at large is not reflected in higher education. In fact Latinos are the least represented population in our colleges and universities, whether as administrators, faculty or students; and as students have one of the highest levels of attrition.

Opening access to Latinas/os, assuring their persistence as students in higher education, and their increased presence in college faculty and governance, is of paramount importance if they are to make essential economic gains and fully to participate in and contribute to American society.

In this ground-breaking book, twenty-four Latina/o scholars provide an historical background; review issues of student access and achievement, and lessons learned; and present the problems of status and barriers faced by administrators and faculty. The book also includes narratives by graduate students, administrators and faculty that complement the essays and vividly bring these issues to life.

This is a book that should be read by policy makers, college administrators, student affairs personnel and faculty concerned about shaping the future of higher education--and constitutes an invaluable resource for all leaders of the Latino community.

        Book Description

Asset management is a major industry playing an increasingly important role in economic activity around the world. Traditionally, it has been primarily associated with the 'stock market' economies of the UK and the USA, but as this book shows some of the most spectacular growth in activity of
recent years has occurred in continental Europe. This has presented opportunities and challenges. New forms of financial instruments and institutions have emerged in countries that have traditionally relied on debt and non-market forms of intermediation. Competition has intensified and entry has
occurred both within and across national markets. However, this growth has been accompanied by potential problems; will investors enjoy a wider range of products and services, they face more complex instruments and transactions. Therefore, the potential for failures, such as misdealing and fraud,
may have increased. The natural response is to strengthen regulation, but there is a fine balance to be struck between in adequate and excessive regulation of asset managers. This is particularly complicated in the context of European capital markets. European countries have traditionally had very
different financial systems and asset management businesses, therefore it is no surprise to discover that they have many different approaches to regulating asset managers. How should the European Commission respond to this diversity? Should it seek to create greater uniformity via common regulatory
rules? The particular focus of this book is financial resource requirements. There is currently an active debate about the role which capital requirements should play in asset management, particularly in the European context. In order to address this issue, the authors argue that it is necessary to
understand the nature of the asset management business in different countries and the risks that it faces. They therefore discuss how the asset management business operates; how it is organized; the nature and size of risks in the business, who bears them and ho they are financed; and what the
alternative forms of investor protection are, together with their associated costs and benefits.

5 out of 5 stars Trade stats 2003.......2004-01-23

China is now America's third largest trade partner. In 2003, the US did $400 billion of trade with Canada, $240 billion with Mexico, and $180 billion with China. Japan's trade with America amounted to $170 billion, Germany under $100 billion, and Britain $75 billion. Five of America's top ten trade partners are Asian: China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia (surprise). Only three were from Europe: Germany, Britain, and France.

Trade growth between America and China is extremely fast. Within a decade, maybe even in five years' time, China will replace Mexico to become America's second largest trade partner. By 2025 - perhaps before - China will be America's number one trade partner.

5 out of 5 stars China: Trading Giant.......2004-01-17

The 2002 trade statistics are very instructive. In total (exports + imports) merchandise trade, China did $621 billion, about 6% of the world total. That might not sound like much until you consider that Japan's share is only 8%. Indeed, if the EU is counted as one unit (thus intra-EU trade is not counted), then China is the world's fourth largest trading nation, after the US, EU and Japan, in merchandise. China's 20% a year growth means the country will overtake Japan's #3 position in two to three years.

If both goods and services are counted, then China did about $702 billion of trade in 2002. That's a lot less than America's $2,382 billion. (But Japan's figure is only $922 billion.) Since there are no figures for extra-EU trade in services, China was, in both goods and services, the world's SIXTH largest trader, after the US, Germany, Japan, Britain, and France, in that order. China can beat Japan in no more than three years if it continues this phenomenal rate of growth.

So that leaves China as the world's number three trading nation, after the US and Germany, OR after the EU and the US, in a couple of years. (China's growth in services trade is a strong 13% - services trade is a lot smaller than goods trade for all countries except Luxembourg.)

Not a bad performance for a country which only 25 years ago did next to no trade with the outside world.

                Book Description

Judgments about Britain's economic performance are constantly being made, often based on inadequate evidence. In this paper, Professor Nicholas Crafts, one of Britain's leading economic historians, assembles the evidence, places recent performance in a long run context and makes informed judgments about whether Britain is suffering from absolute or relative decline. His book is a mine of information about economic trends since the 1870s, giving details of the GDP, productivity, investment, educational attainment, taxation and other statistics which are relevant if proper assessments of economic performance are to be made.

One of his conclusions is that the economic reforms which began with the Thatcher governments, and which have broadly been continued under New Labour, have made a difference, avoiding some of the 'government failures' of earlier years. How managers respond to the revolution in information and communications technology is now a key factor in determining Britain's future performance.

Most ecommerce experts agree that click-and-buy shopping cart sites are fast becoming a thing of the past. Soon, the only ebusinesses that will matter will be those which allow customers to custom design the products they buy. At Ford, the Ford-Oracle AutoXchange site transformed Ford's supply chain from one based on forecasts and building for inventory to a real-time, build-to-order model. In this practical guide to the future of ebusiness, BuildNet, Inc. Chairman Keith T. Brown clearly explains why the most successful business-to-consumer (B2C) ebusinesses, now and in the years ahead, are those built on interactive business-to-business (B2B) platforms that integrate Internet technology into all phases of business operations. And he arms readers with the knowledge and skills needed to create solid interactive business plans. Keith T. Brown (Durham, NC) is Chairman of BuildNet, Inc., the home-building industry's largest ebusiness, technology, and project management software company. A privately held company, BuildNet, Inc. manages the construction of approximately a third of all residential home construction in the U.S.

I have read the book. It give me impression that it is like a future story book, but in the near future. In my opinion, timeframe will be within 5 years in US, but 10 years in foreign countries. What will happens like the book describes will be based on the infrastructure of high-bandwith internet and online purchasing peoples up to the critical numbers. I am not an expert on these, but I believe it will come very soon. Anyway, it is worth to read. English is not my mother tongue, but I read it just like I read a novel, no reading problems. worth it.

Good resource for E-com Business Development and strategy.

This immediately took my mind back when some arrogant nerd said that there was going to be a personal computer in every home. At that time you would have to purchase another home to have adequate space for the monster. Also, it was helpful but slow compared to the paper system we had. Nevertheless, look where we are now.

The info in this book is right on target and in my opinion could come to pass in the next 5 years. Regardless, demand by the industries as a whole for just in time possessing will be upon us shortly. This book describes how and why the benefits are worth pursuing. ...

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of the potential of e-business.......2000-10-13

This little book is filled with all of the good reasons why e-commerce is here to stay. By means of simple parable/storytelling, Brown demystifies the complexities of doing business on the internet. "You don't need a weatherman to show which way the wind blow" might be his motto.

When a friend gave me the book, I thought it was a "how-to" book; it's not. But the theory presented here is compelling enough to have made this a worthy read.

                          5 out of 5 stars Powerful & punchy.......2000-10-10

Despite the fact that previous reviews for this book were obviously written by employees of the company, I think it has a lot to offer every internet start-up.

The Interactive Marketplace uncovers the stumbling blocks that plague similar dot.coms and vaporware providers. The book shows how erratic planning is not necessarily the next step toward success in the "e-commerce", "vector-this", "leverage-love" economies. A few may be surprised that interactive technology is here to stay and will -like the telephone- enable products to dynamically respond to the cyber-paced feild of "just in time" delivery, Brown has a clean, fresh and airy grasp that business communities are now, more than ever, vulnerable than before the Internet emerged. For businesses to succeed, they can't just publish a business plan with vague and quickly outdated flow charts of a technological society that is passing them by; instead they should plan to implement upgraded technology and hire professionals who exhibit skill rather than just a resume of golden parachutes; this highly targeted, personalized, value-added approach will guide otherwise graying companies out of the internet colorbook phase and into reading whole business sentences with ease. Composed in mostly in buzz-words and executive refridgerator magnets, this book will hold anyone who has as much experience in the techno-trenches and also be an invaluable bible for company leaders trying to find their place in the changing Internet economy. Please, buy this book for yourself as well as one for a co-worker.

There are over 24 quality control systems recommended for the control and improvement of quality and process; there are over 30 techniques and buzzwords suggested for implementing these systems and to assist in learning about these systems and techniques; there are well over 200 courses, seminars, programs, and conferences available. This book discusses the pros and cons of these many alternatives, suggests how an effective system can be assembled or reconstructed by selecting and combining some basic engineering methods, some non-statistical methods based on team efforts, and seven statistical tools, with computer application assistance. Different requirements of different companies mean there is no one best way to construct or modify a quality system plan. There is no plan that can "fit all sizes." This book presents-in clear and simple terms-the needs, goals, cautions, and suggested procedures you should consider when modifying or constructing an effective system for your company.

                                                Book Description

The Dynamics of Industrial Collaboration revisits and reformulates issues previously raised by inter-firm collaboration. The latest research in collaboration, processes and evaluation of cooperation, and industrial and research networks is presented by way of both empirical and theoretical studies.

The authors use several theoretical perspectives to explain inter-firm and inter-institutional collaboration: the theory of transaction costs and contracts, evolutionary theory, and the resource-based view. The book illustrates that none of these approaches are dominant.

The issue of collaboration is raised in various contexts such as the new economics, biotechnology, and the motor industry. It will be of special interest to industrial economists and scholars of evolutionary economics.

                                                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Easier than technical DM books but more informative than business books.......2007-08-15

Much data mining literature is aimed either at marketers who do not even aspire to understand what the technology does, or technical practitioners who have graduate-level knowledge of math, computer science, and statistics. Data Mining Explained manages to straddle this fence, combining the quick-and-easy readability of a business book with the practical implications of a technical tome.

Readers of this book will learn what questions data mining can answer, what analytical techniques it can entail, how data mining projects can be managed, and how data mining has been used successfully in various industries. There are no complicated equations, but high-level algorithmic concepts like the difference between top-down and bottom-up clustering are thoroughly explained. The management advice includes a general project methodology and is augmented by the illustration of a typical project plan (in which it's interesting to note that <40% is spent on model prototyping, evaluation and implementation). There is also specific advice for handling typical issues like missing or bad data, intercorrelated features, and small target populations.

By far the most useful sections are Chapters 8-10 on Data Mining Techniques (divided into "Knowledge Discovery" and "Predictive Models") and Chapters 11-13 on Data Mining Management (divided into "Avoiding Pitfalls," "Overcoming Obstacles," and "Managing Projects to Success"). (Skip the case studies at the end. They're too general to be useful.)

One small drawback: the book has several obvious annotation errors and some evidence of discontinuity from cut-and-paste reorganization. My library book had some pencil edits and index corrections made by previous readers, and I added some of my own. But this is a small nuisance within a generally positive reading experience.

3 out of 5 stars Data Mining put in context.......2001-12-27

This book contains descriptions of the most common data mining techniques and examples of how they can be applied in different industries with real case studies.

It's a good book if you want to have an overview of data mining and get some ideas about how to use it and it covers a quite a broad perspective and is very much uptodate. I would maybe have prefered a book which was more like a reference guide for practical every-day-use.
