5 out of 5 stars Another book that deserves wider readership.......2002-11-30

Gail Griffin's book should have been published to greater fanfare. I suspect the major publishers were nervous (if indeed they saw this book at all) because, as another reviewer said, the book is difficult to categorize. A book of essays? Sounds dreary.

Yet Seasons is one of the liveliest, most insightful career books available. As a career coach, I frequently cite Gail's story of being asked to cover for a project-botching colleague. The man was paid a stipend but everyone knew he would do a bad job -- so the administration asked Gail to give up her summer research quarter (for which she was not paid) and do the job -- for no compensation of course!

As a former college professor myself, I can relate to Gail's stories of second-class treatment in academia. She triumphed and became a department head -- but the frustrations never go away completely. Male colleagues interrupt her office hours and her classes. I've had similar experiences.

Some of the best essays in the book deal with Gail's classroom experiences as she teaches literature to undergraduates. In fact, I think she would do better to put together a collection of those experiences and sell them as a book. Her discussion of The Color Purple and her analysis of a Rita Snow poem are worth the price of the book. She makes literature come alive and we see why she is such a gifted teacher.

If you can get a copy of this book, send it to anyone who's entering academia, especially women. And if you like literature and want to share Gail's exuberance, that's another reason to track down this book and buy it.

4 out of 5 stars White pages aren't blank pages.......2000-11-16

Gail's book is one of those that I would never want to place in a single category. It's a perfect blend of memoir, storytelling, commentary, and literary criticism. A good part of the work focuses on growing up white and female, and the challenges that come when someone of this background teaches literature by African Americans. She confronts many aspects of the collective history to which she belongs that are often unacknowledged or set aside. As a professor of literature, she seems to examine her own life, culture, and history as if it were one of her classroom texts - carefully, thoughtfully, and fully aware of the many opposing and contrasting views one could hold. I left the experience of reading this book feeling that I knew more about literature, my culture, and myself. There is much more within this book than a simple memoir, cultural commentary, or literary critique would offer - it's too beautiful and complex to belong in one of these categories.

If you believe that successful leadership can't be codified, Colonel Jay W. Spechler, Ph.D., would beg to differ. A management consultant and professor, the Colonel clearly describes the traits of a successful leader and then details what such a leader must do to guide a strategic planning initiative. Having pinned his model for success to a board like a butterfly, he describes how 18 organizations changed through strategic planning under strong leaders. The Colonel's organizations vary from large corporations - American Airlines, AT&T and Ritz Carlton Hotels - to nonprofit, trade and governmental organizations - a local school board, the United Services Automobile Association and the U.S. Air Force. He nails down and organizes the major elements that make a strategic initiative work. We [...] recommend this book as a refreshing change from the general run of works on theoretical strategic planning. Thanks to his focus on the human and organizational face of leadership and change, Spechler is our new favorite Colonel.

                      Book Description

This book is essential reading for electronic consumer-product manufacturers doing business in the European marketplace. Compliance with directives and procedures can be a complex and confusing process, resulting in wasted money and effort. With the help of the CE Marking Handbook, engineers and managers can more easily identify which rules apply to them and pinpoint what they need to do to comply. Dave Lohbeck was formerly the Manager for Seminars and Training at TUV Rhineland, the largest German testing and certification agency. He has worked for many years as an engineer, including nine years in the field of European safety and EMC compliance.

A once complicated topic is made clear as the author addresses the confusion surrounding CE Marking. Lohbeck offers guidance on both legal and design issues. This book includes a step-by-step design guide aimed at both novice and experienced exporters. With its help, engineers and managers can easily identify which rules apply to their products and pinpoint what they need to do to comply. The information presented here is backed up with facts and examples. Many have been misled, unfortunately, but this book presents the real meaning of CE Marking.

Shows design engineers how to comply with CE requirements for product conformity
Explains legal and technical issues concisely and logically
Presents and illuminates US and EU differences

The CE Marking Handbook offers a loving philosophical defense of the European Community's (EC's) ideas on product safety, but little in the way of practical resources needed by people who have to sell products in the EC which comply with the appropriate safety standards. After several hours of reading, I had gleaned virtually no useful information, and was ready to send the book to the circular file. The book's organization is obscure and confusing, and the prose more like a novel than a handbook; a difficult and confusing read. The book has a glaring lack of the SPECIFIC, DETAILED, product requirements for the EC (not a single safety standard, nor even a summary of a standard, is printed in the book, as far as I can tell) and a mountain of non-sense about the differences between US and EC safety values. WHO CARES?! Readers who would consider buying this book need help, not moralizing lectures on safety philosophy. Don't waste your time and money, buy something else. I am going to have to.

                              Book Description

This work explores the philosophy, actions, and policies of the Interstate Commerce Commission by focusing on the development of its railroad regulation practices, particularly since 1976. Richard Stone traces the radical change in the ICC's view of the rail industry, from the maximum control it exercised for many years through the unilateral deregulation that was begun in 1978. He considers the forces and pressures that contributed to the Commission's actions, including Congress, the president, the railroads, rail shippers, and academicians. The book begins with two chapters that survey the history of the ICC and rail regulation through the mid-1970s. Stone then turns to the events of 1976, when the seeds of deregulation were sown with the election of Jimmy Carter and the passage of the Railroad Revitalization and Regulatory Reform (4R) Act. Subsequent chapters cover the years between the 4R Act and the Staggers Act, which were characterized by the Commission's changing attitude toward rail regulation; the background and provisions of the 1980 Staggers Act and the events that followed it; and the recent events and changes in philosophy that have taken place at the ICC with regard to the rail industry. This study, the first to be published on the ICC since 1976, follows that body's transformation from a powerful independent commission to a much smaller and less influential institution. The work will be a valuable resource for students of public policy, transportation studies, and political science.

These two relatively unknown Asian authors (at least to most of North America I imagine) have written a concise and very practical guide to setting up a business, being an entrepreneur, or just being a corporate manager running a department within a larger enterprise. These guys seem to know their work, without the pretense of hyperbole packaging, and without the failings of more academic writings. The writing is not perfect, but the techniques and tips are very sound and practical, and without fluff. I love the book!

                                  Book Description

Knowledge is most productive when it is shared by all. This simple but profound insight, long accepted in the academic, scientific, and medical communities, is about to radically transform business. Our economy has become inundated with information, yet often businesses are unable to use and exploit it. How can managers organize their workplaces to effectively exchange, expand, and exploit knowledge?

Dr. Jim Botkin, one of the world's leading knowledge consultants, sees a tidal wave of information swamping the old ways of doing business. The knowledge economy, he argues, is not just for Silicon Valley startups; it touches every company, in every industry. We ignore Dr. Botkin's experience at our peril; the new breakneck speed of change demands that we all capture and capitalize on knowledge, or die. As he puts it, "You better not be in the same business five or ten years from now that you are in today."

Smart Business is the first knowledge-age book to give practical advice on how to organize and make use of knowledge -- how to turn knowledge into wisdom. Botkin argues that we must build "knowledge communities" -- groups of people with a shared passion to create, use, and share new knowledge for tangible business purposes. When we do, we will experience a transformation that powers our business and inspires new models of networked management.

Botkin draws on the experiences of dozens of companies -- and includes testimonials in an appendix from managers at such organizations as Xerox, Marriott, Saturn, and Los Alamos labs. He shows how AT&T formed six knowledge communities in order to radically transform their selling strategy. How the postal service of Sweden transformed itself from the oldest state monopoly to one of the largest successful private companies in Scandinavia. How Motorola is using knowledge to transform its legendary Motorola University from classroom curriculum to catalyst for change.

With examples like these, and practical advice on how every organization can benefit from knowledge communities, Smart Business is the knowledge book for the new millennium.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A KaosPilot must-read.......1999-07-18

At The KaosPilot University we do not believe in lists with required reading since this would deprive the students of the opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning - learning how to learn - but SMART BUSINESS by Dr. Jim Botkin is the exception which confirms that rule. The new dividing line is between the ones who know and the ones who do not know how to capture, share and leverage knowledge.

Smart Business is the pragmatic new economy manifesto we have been waiting for and a 'must-read' for anyone who want to keep making a difference when the rules of business is changing.

Thanx! -- Erik Wingren, Aggressive Learner

4 out of 5 stars This books goes beyond technology in addressing KM issues!.......1999-06-18

In today's hyper-linked, blurred world, it's not surprising that the KM field is overflowing with books and papers, each touting the "best" solution. So why should you read this book?

What Jim Botkin realizes and communicates in this excellent book is that there is no single "best" KM solution. Rather, Smart Business clearly tells the story that only a holistic approach can address the real KM issues companies face.

Instead of advocating a specific KM technology or process,he provides numerous examples of how real companies are dealing with the significant cultural, as well as the technological, issues around KM. Together, these examples paint an impressionistic picture of what it takes to be at the forefront of successful KM.

What these companies have found out, and what Jim reports back, is that KM is more about constructing a community rather than installing a piece of software or hardware. And building communities is not something that can easily be reduced to a series of steps or processes. Communities arise from shared experiences. And if telling stories is one of the best ways to share an experience, then by the time the reader has finished, they will have experienced a bit of what it's like to be inside a KM leader.

What's exciting about Smart Business is that the stories are not filtered through Jim. Instead the reader hears them "first hand" directly from the company. You read about how Xerox made the transition from the document company to a knowledge company from Priscilla Douglas of Xerox's Public Sector area. Helena Light Hadley, Director of Marriott's New Business Ventures, tells you how they use KM to assure high levels of customer service in an industry with traditionally high turn-over rates.

So if you're looking to go beyond technology and into the fundamental cultural issues in KM, Jim Botkin's Smart Business is a great story to hear!

5 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force on the knowledge revolution.......1999-06-17

Dr. Jim has done it again. The author of the best selling, Monster Under the Bed, has given us the most concise and authoritative work yet on knowlege: its management; communities; and the new knowledge business.

The book breaks new ground and also summarizes where we are in the whirlwind of knowledge as it rips through the entire global economy. It incorporates a number of insightful case studies from real companies around the world on how they are coping with this new phenomena.

The real value to readers, initiated and novice, is how organizations, through knowledge communities, can transform themselves, even in legacy companies. These are powerful ideas, stories and concepts that together create a whole new way of doing business-- SMART BUSINESS.

I loved the analogy to bees and the clever artwork. Nature itself can teach us many lessons if only we had the patience to learn. You can learn a great deal from this book. "Dell or be Delled", as the saying now goes. This book is a manifesto for the emerging fast company. Read it and move into the future. Disregard it at your own peril!

5 out of 5 stars Praise from a Knowledge Management Practitioner.......1999-06-17

If you are "doing" knowledge management and it's not working, read Jim Botkin's book. If you want to build a knowledge management system, read the book. If your CEO doesn't "get" knowledge management, have him or her read this book. It is a very cogent presentation of the business case for knowledge management, and for those who want to learn, a great KM primer. AND there's a new and valuable framework for success, which is the knowledge community. Without it or them, you're wasting your time. It is an intelligent and fun book, loaded with great examples and personal stories.

1 out of 5 stars Tedious recapitulation of the obvious.......1999-06-10

How many cliches can a consultant craft into a single disjointed book? Too many. The examples are tired; the insights are obvious, and the conclusions familiar. Save your time and money.
