In the twentieth century, industrialization transformed the Piedmont Carolinas from a poor, largely agricultural and backward region into one of the most vibrant and attractive areas of the nation. While many things played a part in this transformation, one indisputable factor was a reliable and economical source of electricity as provided after 1904 by what became Duke Power Company.

This book covers the history of Duke Power from its foundation up to 1997. Unlike most of the investor-owned electric utilities in the United States, which were controlled by giant holding companies or investment banks, the Duke Power company was financed largely by a local family, the Dukes of Durham, who had made their fortune in tobacco and textiles before turning to the electric-power business in the early 1900s. J.B. Duke speculated that development of hydroelectric power would draw business industries such as textiles to the rural South and reinvigorate its economy. His power company did that and more, lasting through the struggles during utilities regulation and labor organization, harnessing of nuclear power, continuing to diversify its operations into the 1990s. Robert F. Durden has chronicled Duke Power's contributions to the rich economic diversity of North and South Carolina and its effect on the people for whom it has provided power for almost 100 years.

This, then, is the story of a distinctive electric utility that early on took and held a leading place among the investor-owned utilities of the nation and its effects on the economic life of the Carolinas.

Lots of data, but perhaps too much. The book did an OK job of giving the history of the Duke Power Company, but leaned, in my opinion, a little too heavily on stats from the annual reports. It made for dry reading from time to time.

I would be interested in seeing a follow-up from 1997-2007.

For a piece of this puzzle, check out "Continental Reach: The Westcoast Energy Story" by Peter C. Newman. Duke acquired Westcoast in 2001.

I was given the opportunity to read this book as part of a class that I was taking for my master's program. The first few chapters are pretty good, but after that I found that I disagreed with the author more than anything else. I found that I was frustrated because it didn't seem practical for use in a real classroom.

      I always approach statistics and their applications with great trepidation, but this handbook really makes using and creating statistics easy.

      The book is broken up into several kinds of statistical tests and explains the criteria needed for each test, as well as what the test can be used for. As an information professional, my need for statistics is very focused, and this book on statistics for knowledge workers weeds out extraneous information, as well as tests that are far too complicated for an amateur to interpret.

      The author includes specific instructions for running statistical tests on Excel, as well as SSPS. She guides you through step by step analysis of your data, and manages to be very encouraging at the same time!

      A great resource for your library.

                      This is a new interpretation of the historical development of our understanding of the workings of the economy. Mark Perlman and Charles R. McCann's important work illuminates the foundations of economic inquiry during the past three hundred years. Writing from the standpoint of the impact of cultural pluralism on economic thinking, their purpose is to show how modern economic thinking is shaped by a small number of cultural legacies that explain both how economic questions are asked but also how they are formulated. This history of economic thought is thus distinguished by the attention that it gives to the philosophical ideas that are, as the authors say, the cultural legacies upon which the structure of economics is built.
                      What are some of these legacies? The authors consider the principal writings of British, French, German, Austrian, and American economists, mainly from the seventeenth century onwards. Underlying these writings are questions posed by Hobbes, Francis Bacon, Descartes, Bentham, Cournot, Walras, Pareto, and such Americans as Bates Clark, Wesley Mitchell, and Commons. An example of the authors' attention to philosophical issues is their discussion of the way much of early economics was written in opposition to Hobbes's belief in the primacy of force. Locke's belief in the God-man relationship seen in unalienable rights and the right of private property are only two of the answers. Other questions relate to the faith in the primacy of Cartesian logic and the need to establish a just society with some controls over the unequal division of the product.
                      This is a major contribution to the history of economic thought and an important source for all with an interest in the deep issues posed by the study and modeling of the economy.

                        The author describes a number of campaigns that he was involved in developing during the course of an interesting career at a number of advertising agencies. Some are interesting, more often then not the conclusions are not conclusive. Perhaps that is reflective of the difficulties of measuring effectiveness from an agency perspective.

                        Not a must have, but a good light read. I blew through it on a cross country US flight.

                        The case studies in Divide & Conquer are without a doubt the most in depth, no holds barred, and realistic that I have ever read. If you are in advertising or marketing and want to get ahead the game you must read this book and put some of the techniques described in your day to day practice. I really enjoyed Webber's book.

                                  This is certainly a complete theoretical book on revenue management.
                                  But for somebody like me who works on a revenue management system in a car rental company, it is not useful and can lead on the contrary to an overly complicated and impossible to implement system.
                                  In any field there is always the theory and how people adapt it to real world cases and there is often a gap between the two.
                                  There should be another book that shows the complete process (relatively simple cases should be good enough) of building a revenue management system starting from strictly real cases as related by the client, relating in particular the cost of the process and the benefit of the implementation as expressed by the client.
                                  But does the authors have the experience necessary to the writing of such a book?

                                  This is first book about Revenue Management that do no try to teach a "cake receipt" or to "adapt" RM from Airlines to Hotels. It's not a manual, it is scientific text that, above all, show the mathematics behind the RM policy. A must have to hotel managers!

                                  The area of Revenue Management (sometimes called yield management) has been developing rapidly over the past decade. All major airlines, car rental companies and hotel chains currently employ Revenue Management systems and profitability of these systems is well documented. Books describing basic concepts of Revenue Management appeared long time ago (see Cross, "Revenue Management: Hard-core Tactics for Profit-making and Market Domination"). Yet, there was no single place to look for the theory behind Revenue Management systems. This long-awaited book represents a concise and up-to-date source of academic knowledge on the theory of Revenue Management as well as implementation aspects. It is a perfect reference for graduate students in Operations Research and for others interested in learning about state of the art in this area.

                                          The volume's 800 pages and CD-ROM database offer an unparalleled source of historical, multi-national, sectoral, and organization-level data, of critical importance for comparing European unions. While the title is "Trade Unions in Western Europe since 1945" the book's historical reach is much farther, with most country profiles beginning analysis of trade union movements in the late 1800s or before. The authors are to be commended for melding together analyses of social, political, and economic factors with great historical detail. After the historical profile, each country's data is presented in some twenty tables, including: political events, organizational changes, lists of unions/confederations, major dates (particularly foundings/cessations), size distributions, membership and density figures (also by gender), and membership by status group and domain and by economic sector and branch. The book and CD-ROM provide a remarkably comprehensive source for union data.
