Customer Reviews:
Research Based?.......2006-09-07
I picked up this book about a month ago, and have already gotten use out of it in the short time since. Many of the reading tests are an excellent fit for students with serious reading difficulties. However, I'm not sure if these tests came about as a result of research or not. As readers may know, if a test or intervention is not scientifically based then it's not viable under the auspices of the Response to Intervention model which means I'm not sure how much application this book will have in the future. It would be great if he'd write an update and include some new materials; although, this book contains many items which are helpful when working with lower functioning students.

Good resource but get the version with CDs of all the artwork.......2005-12-01
Good resource book for design. But, even better- you can get 4811 icons/signs you see in the book on a CD as editable vector EPS files, all royalty free. The publisher, [...] sells it for two hundred fifty usd. I haven't seen it on Amazon yet.
A "Wow". A meticulously produced, comprehensive collection........2005-11-12
Wow! What a great book. I've never before seen such a comprehensive collection of contemporary signs, symbols and labels as this. They all look to be extremely accurate and well organized. There are interesting background essays on the many categories of symbols, such as the history and development of Braille, and a complete alphabetical index of all 4,811 images. I highly recommend this meticulously produced reference for your design (or any other) library.

Book Description
In this beautifully illustrated two-volume study, Ruth Mellinkoff has assembled and analyzed an extraordinary compilation of pictorial signs (motifs, attributes, and other artistic devices) used by medieval artists to identify and denigrate those figures deemed outcasts, such as Jews, heretics, Muslims, blacks, executioners, prostitutes, lepers, gamblers, footsoldiers, entertainers, and peasants. Among the signs treated are costume elements such as patterns and colors, and physical attributes such as skin and hair color, blemishes, and gestures. Mellinkoff focuses on art from northern Europe, with examples culled principally from the thirteenth into the middle of the sixteenth century.
The author poses important questions about the attitudes of Christian society, and nearly 700 images--most in color--are gathered in Volume Two to illustrate her observations. Outcasts will engage and challenge scholars and students of the visual arts and literature, history of religion, anthropology, sociology, and psychology for years to come.

Book Description
Students in the sciences, economics, psychology, social sciences, and medicine take introductory statistics. Statistics is increasingly offered at the high school level as well. However, statistics can be notoriously difficult to teach as it is seen by many students as difficult and boring, if not irrelevant to their subject of choice. To help dispel these misconceptions, Gelman and Nolan have put together this fascinating and thought-provoking book. Based on years of teaching experience the book provides a wealth of demonstrations, examples and projects that involve active student participation. Part I of the book presents a large selection of activities for introductory statistics courses and combines chapters such as, 'First week of class', with exercises to break the ice and get students talking; then 'Descriptive statistics' , collecting and displaying data; then follows the traditional topics - linear regression, data collection, probability and inference. Part II gives tips on what does and what doesn't work in class: how to set up effective demonstrations and examples, how to encourage students to participate in class and work effectively in group projects. A sample course plan is provided. Part III presents material for more advanced courses on topics such as decision theory, Bayesian statistics and sampling.
Customer Reviews:
neat stuff for my basic social stats course.......2006-11-11
I've used eight or ten ideas from this book to good effect. Some of the material is basic, and some is well beyond the scope of the undergraduate social stats course I teach, so the book would likely be useful to a variety of stats courses. The book has a good index that let's you find tips or demonstrations relevant to the concept you are teaching.
Makes introductory statistics fun!.......2005-06-19
Introductory statistics is a course dreaded by many students, and even some teaching staff, and for good reason: many introductory statistics courses deal with examples that are distant from students' experience, and so students never care about the course material, and focus simply on surviving the course by memorizing formulas and definitions. Thus, it's all too easy for introductory statistics to reduce to a series of "Is this going to be on the exam?" type of questions, which is no fun for either the students or the teachers.
This book presents a number of activities which can be done in large lecture courses or small sections to enliven introductory statistics courses. The best of the activities engage the students directly by collecting data from them; since everyone finds themself fascinating, such activities are an automatic hook into students' interest and truly motivate the material. Once the data has been collected from the students, the students can be asked for their predictions about the data, and for different aspects of the data. The teacher can ask questions such as the following, and be almost guaranteed that the students care about the answers to them: if X is true, what do we expect a scatterplot to look like? What would the correlation be? What kind of analysis can we do to figure out whether X is true? Now, what if Y is also true?
As any practicing statistician knows, such exploratory questions cut to the heart of statistics, so these activities succeed in giving students a real understanding of what it means to be doing statistics. That said, I have found some of the activities are more fun than educational; one activity reenacts the famous Fisher tea tasting experiment using soft drinks, as a Pepsi-type challenge. I used this activity with an introductory course which did not cover the exact test. While the students really enjoyed this activity, the amount of statistics involved in it is relatively small, so the activity degenerated into a discussion about the role of marketing in people's perception of the quality of a product. It was a good discussion and everyone enjoyed it, but I don't think that the students learned any statistics from it.
Overall, this book provides an engaging approach which would be beneficial for anyone who teaches statistics. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Encyclopedias Are My Best Friends.......2002-05-21
People keep on badgering me about what do I do and how did I earn my living? Well, I am a management scientist. They respond with a blank stare.
Some time ago a curious person asked a management scientist, "What is Management Science?" The expert who was a wit answered, "Management Science is what management scientists do". But an even greater wit, C. West Churchman, overheard this and corrected the statement: "Management Science is what management scientists think they do. Today, there is an unequivocal answer: "Management Science is what is printed in the Encyclopedia of Operations Research and Management Science".
So now when a friend badgers me I show the Encyclopedia, "This is what I and my colleagues do". He weighs the tome, leaves through and typically says "You told me you help management. This is a book on math. How come?" I shrug my shoulders, "As you can see, we find that math is the most effective way to deal with some management issues.
We need to realize that publication of an encyclopedia is a defining moment in our intellectual history. When in 1745 the publisher André Le Breton approached Denis Diderot (1713-1784), French philosopher, who also wrote novels, essays, plays, and art and literary criticism with a view to bringing out a French translation of Ephraim Chambers' Cyclopedia after two other translators had withdrawn from the project. Diderot undertook the task with the distinguished mathematician Jean Le Rond d'Alembert as coeditor but soon profoundly changed the nature of the publication, broadening its scope and turning it into a vast, new 35-volume work, Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des metiers which is usually known as the Encyclopédie . He gathered around him a team of dedicated litterateurs, scientists, and even priests, including Voltaire and Montesquieu. All were fired with a common purpose: to further knowledge by a "rational dictionary" and to bring out the essential principles and applications of every art and science.
Drs. Saul I. Gass and the late Carl M. Harris followed in the footsteps of Diderot and d'Alembert, gathered an international group of the best brains and produced the monumental 917-page tome of the Encyclopedia of OR/MS, with 228 major expository articles to provide decision makers and problem solvers "comprehensive overview of the wide range of ideas, methodologies, and synergistic forces that combine to form the pre-eminent decision-aiding fields of operations research and management science".
The Single Reference for Operations Research.......2002-05-02
This work provides an excellent reference for OR/MS. It would be difficult to identify a related topic not addressed. The entries are truly encyclopedic in nature, succinctly presenting material supported by key references. Besides broad coverage of major areas of OR useful for researchers venturing into new areas, separate entries provide information on key concepts. This greatly facilitates retrieving in-depth information. For example, decision analysis is covered as a general topic, while a separate entry provides information regarding certainty equivalents.
Of interest to military OR analysts, there are entries for battle modeling, combat model and combat simulation, military operations research, and military operations other than war. Interestingly there are also entries discussing US Air Force and Navy operations research while there does not seem to be one specific to Army OR. The military roots of OR is discussed in these entries, as well as that outlining the history of the Operations Research Office.
If the book has a weakness, it must be the index. While certainly a good effort, there seem to be a number of items in the entries that, had they been included in the index, would have made the book more useful. And while the encyclopedia can't be everything to everyone, I would have included more multivariate statistical topics notwithstanding my second sentence above. The cost of the book places it out of reach for most personal libraries.

Book Description
Although hundreds of school improvement programs have been launched in the United States over the past quarter century, very few of them have been successful. The author of Quality in Education: An Implementation Handbook, an experienced quality expert who specializes in education, believes that many of these programs could have succeeded had their developers understood and applied the theories and methods of Total Quality Management (TQM). This book explains how to avoid the pitfalls that doomed previous efforts to failure, and apply TQM to build a strong foundation for success. Beginning with the basic concepts and tools, this book is your complete guide as you embark on your quality journey. The handbook explains the importance of making a commitment to change and establishing a shared vision of quality, and discusses tools and techniques for overcoming resistance and developing a quality culture. The book covers new methods you can use to manage change, and includes exercises to help you apply the ideas in your organization. Examples from successful schools demonstrate how Total Quality Management can be applied to every area of education, from classroom management to building maintenance. Quality in Education: An Implementation Handbook teaches you how to make fundamental changes to the way people in your district or school view education and themselves as educators. Using the principles and methods in this book ,you can realize the tremendous benefits of quality - continuous improvement in every educational process.

gives a relatively good overview but short on actions.......1999-10-10
This is the paperback version of the earlier hardback - without any updates/expanded ideas. It is easy to read and/or refer to, and it does give a relatively good overview of opportunity spotting concepts/ideas but does not give much detailed information regarding the process of decision-making and evaluating actions to be taken. By comparison, Edward de Bono's Opportunities book is a much better book, especially its detailed coverage on the startpoint, endpoint strategies and evaluation strategies towards opportunity spotting. Also, the latter's coverage of the In-box opportunity mapping process is a gem. Nevertheless, Opportunity Spotting is still a worthwhile book to be included in an opportunity spotter's reference library.

Customer Reviews:
Save your money and buy a gold fish.......2004-10-16
This book/CD is a waste of your time and money, mostly of your money as you can breeze through this ultra lightweight treatment in about 15 minutes. I got the impression that this was originally some kid's grade school video project because of its amateurish production values and condescendingly elementary content. It offers only the most superficial insight into body language and does not offer the depth of information you should expect (...). One segment even contains a clip of a child who looks to be all of 11, trying to convince his little friend that his Harry Potter book is really, really good...with that being about the extent of the little guy's persuasive skills, not withstanding his body language. It may be convincing if you're 11, but the whole package still has the feel of a 5th grade skit. And that kind of nonsense is passed off as some kind of professionally useful insight into body language, ostensibly produced for adult salespeople.
In the spirit of trying out their technique, I am leaning forward as I tell you that this thing is really, really bad. Photos and videos are small and grainy, making it difficult to see the postures and expressions the models are using. And making matters worse, the monotoned narrator is completely unenthusiastic and flat. I thought it was Emo Phillips at first.
This book/CD, despite its serious price, is not serious training for professional salespeople, in fact, it's insulting to view and would be embarrassing to show to others. Get the gold fish and forget this deal.
