    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Entertainingly written, but now TOTALLY OUTDATED.......2003-01-21

If this book could be updated, with CURRENT industry and student remarks, I would give it a much better review. The MBA 'payback' and education approach is now currently under turmoil with the global downturn and the corporate scandals worldwide - this book of course is now too old to consider these aspects.
Be very careful, particularly if you expect an MBA in the current climate to 'spoonfeed' you a job with Morgan Stanley, to take this book too seriously. I am currently in the final term of a top-flight MBA in the Asia-Pacific region (which included a European exchange to a highly regarded school), and have had the time of my life, so can speak with a fair bit of authority about the book.
It is very well written and honest, so that's a good thing.
Unfortunately it was written right towards the end of the Internet bubble, and way before Sep. 11 and Iraq, so the book's advice in the second part in particular is now almost like reading a quaint history book of a bygone era.
It also at times takes too much credence from some of the studnent's comments, many of whom have a very US-centric/investment banking view of the MBA (ironically the region/sector that has been affected worst by the MBA downturn)
As a book telling you about the CURRENT situation of what you get out of the MBA, it is hopeless. It badly needs to be updated.
The MBA is still the most amazing experience of my life, but my current class have learnt to become 'optimistic realists'. The book needs to reflect this.
Have a look at the latest articles on [website](uk - education section) regarding the tough situation for current MBAs to see what I mean....

2 out of 5 stars Decent information a bit Dull.......2001-10-04

Also somewhat one-dimensional in its approach

    4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2001-09-28

Next to the Vault.com MBA career website, I found the MBA Planet book to be the most critical resource for MBAs.

      Book Description

Before future-oriented information can be used as a basis for decision making in economics or business administration, it must be understood on a methodological level. This book provides decision makers with a thorough understanding of the possibilities offered by various forecasting methods as well as their limitations. If managers rely on a forecast with a long-term perspective to guide them in making short-term decisions, planning deficiencies will likely result. Likewise, if managers use short-term forecasts to inform their long-term strategic vision, failure could easily ensue. Graf provides the tools necessary to sidestep the common pitfall of using the wrong forecasting technique for the wrong purpose. This is not a detailed examination of the mathematical and statistical tools of empirical economic research. Instead, forecasting methods are explained so that they can be understood by the managers who employ them in their decision making. Graf demonstrates that understanding and--in special cases--cooperation between forecast developers and users is crucial to creating an effective forecast that results in informed management decisions. He discusses traditional, long-term, macroeconomic, and global economic forecasting; the scenario technique as a central instrument of long-term forecasting; and short-term economic and market forecasting.

                              Book Description

This collection contains essays that provide definitive and accessible accounts of recent research on some of the most important topics in the theory of decision-making and organization-design with incomplete information. Aimed primarily at nonspecialists, some of the essays indicate the limitations of accepted paradigms and suggest directions of future research. Graduate students contemplating careers in economic theory will find the volume a particularly stimulating source of research topics. It can also serve as an item on the reading list of courses on advanced microeconomic theory, information theory, game theory and organization theory.

The product was not what I expected. I found 2 typos and I did not even go through the whole presentation. Some of the grammar was odd as well.

                                  Book Description

A new line of books reveals how technology is changing how we do business...

How strategic business-wide use of Web technology can boost efficiency, sales, and profits

Authors Tim McEachern and Bob O'Keefe vividly illustrate that new Web technology must be considered and managed within the context of a company's entire business operations. With the help of success stories from industry leaders, they demonstrate the impact the Web can have on everything from product development to supplier relations, marketing and sales to personal management styles.

                                  * The first book to show how strategic use of Web technology can positively impact all aspects of organizational growth
                                  * Includes real-life examples from Johnson & Johnson, GE Price Waterhouse, United Technologies, UT Carriers, and other industry leaders
                                  * Provides a framework for integrating EDI, Intranets, logistics software, and other Web-related technologies into product design and overall business operations

TIM McEACHERN (Albany, New York) is founder and President of One World Interactive, developers of Web sites for a number of Fortune 500 companies. BOB O'KEEFE (London, England) is a professor of information services management at Brunel University in London and has been a visiting professor at the Rensselaer Polytech's Lally School of Management and Technology.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1998-10-14

I've read virtually every "Internet" book and found this to be singly the best. I'm recommending it to everyone. Great advice, great examples. All around great.

4 out of 5 stars GPA - Good Practical Advice.......1998-08-22

I found the book extremely pragmatic, sometimes to the point of overkill, but better that than no examples at all. Points are well made, found the strategy discussion excellent and timeless, and overall the authors seem to avoid technology recommendations, focusing instead on strategic matters.

Overall, well worth the money. Felt like a conversation with the authors rather than a stuffy, "this is how you do it or else" usually reserved for this category.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Misleading title.......1998-06-13

The word "management" in the subtitle threw me. This book is mainly for managers who are looking to make money, rather than manage, on the web, While Chapter 4, "The Network Inside," is on Intranets, and Chapter 6, "The Medium is the Message" (how's that for cliché?) is on newsgroups and other feedback mechanisms, the bulk of the book focuses on marketing and retailing. That's fine, but it's not centered around management/organizational issues. What's left is kind of interesting but not exactly content-rich. The "pragmatic" aspects of the book, while they should enthuse sales and marketing types, are not developed enough to give direction to the technophiles. I was hoping for something with a little more meat.
